Canon has released free webcam software, EOS Webcam Utility Beta, to turn many EOS and PowerShot cameras into high-quality USB webcams without the need to purchase any additional hardware.

While EOS Webcam Utility Beta is still in beta, and is limited to Windows operating systems, it offers a solution for anyone working from home and struggling to take part in video meetings with their smartphone or laptop camera. It's also a great option for those wondering how to set up a virtual hangout on Zoom or other apps with better quality video.

The software is a good alternative to buying one of the dedicated best webcams for your computer. However, if you want to make use of your camera's clean HDMI out (or if you want to use a non-Canon camera as a webcam), you can also check out our guide on how to use your DSLR, GoPro or mirrorless camera as a 4K webcam

Once you've downloaded EOS Webcam Utility Beta, simply connect your camera to a Windows computer with a USB cable. Then just configure the camera with your video conferencing software of choice and you're ready to go! The full list of compatible cameras is as follows:

“In unprecedented times, it’s imperative for Canon to provide our customers with useful, simple and accessible solutions to assist them in whatever imaging needs they have,” said Tatsuro Kano, executive VP of Canon USA's Imaging Technologies & Communications Group.

“Our goal is that the EOS Webcam Utility Beta software can help reduce some of the remote workday stress for employees who are tasked with video conferencing and virtual meetings.”
