Canon, Nikon and Sony are the big winners in this year’s TIPA World Awards which have just been announced by the Technical Image Press Association. Canon heads the list of awardees with wins in five categories, with Nikon and Sony following closely with four each, while Sigma and Fujifilm have each won three categories.
In all, awards have been presented in 40 categories of imaging products, recognizing excellence in the areas of design, technical innovation, capabilities and performance.
The annual TIPA World Awards are judged by the Association’s member magazines which currently number 26 titles from around the globe, including Future's very own Australian Camera.
Judges usually meet at a predesignated location to discuss the awards. However, as magazine representatives were unable to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in the Awards’ 29-year history, judging was conducted online. Consequently, TIPA’s Technical Committee – which includes Australian Camera’s editor, Paul Burrows – was tasked with drawing up a shortlist of potential candidates for members to consider.
Canon achieved wins with the EOS-1D X Mark III (Best Professional DSLR Camera), EOS 90D (Best Advanced DSLR Camera), RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (Best Mirrorless Telephoto Zoom Lens), RF 85mm f/1.2 USM DS (Best Professional Portrait Lens) and the PowerShot G7 X Mark III (Best Vlogging Camera).
Nikon’s winners are the D780 (Best Expert DSLR Camera), Z 50 (Best Advanced APS-C Camera), Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct (Best Mirrorless Standard Prime Lens) and AF-S Nikkor 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR (Best DSLR Professional Lens).
Other notable winners in the 2020 TIPA World Awards are the Sigma fp (Best Expert Full Frame Camera), Sony A7R IV (Best Professional Full Frame Camera) and Fujifilm X-Pro3 (Best Professional APS-C Camera).
Perhaps not surprisingly, Fujifilm’s GFX 100 was judged Best Medium Format Camera and the X100V won the award for Best Premium Compact Camera, while Sony’s Real-Time AF Tracking technology has been judged the Best Photo Innovation.
