Looking to score a bargain on a new camera for the new year? You're in luck: now's a great time to pick up one of the best cameras Canon's made to date.
The EOS R5 is the current flagship model in Canon's prosumer full-frame mirrorless range and it's only a smidge over five grand on Amazon Australia right now. There's also AU$250 cashback available via redemption from Canon, bringing the final price down to just over AU$4,800. At AU$1,699 off the RRP, that's the cheapest we've seen for the EOS R5 and an absolute steal for this mirrorless marvel.
What do you get for that kinda cash? Well, there's a fantastic 45MP sensor that produces amazing results with incredible detail that can be captured at up to 20fps and class-leading autofocus (inherited from the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III sports DSLR) for starters. That AF system has a staggering 5,940 user-defined points for stills and 4,500 for videography. And if the latter is what you're really into, then you can record uncropped 8K raw footage internally at up to 29.97fps in 4:2:2 12-bit colour. Despite the limitations on recording times, there's some serious cinema-quality specs here.
Not everyone needs a high-res sensor or 8K video capabilities. If you're on a tighter budget and a lower pixel count will suffice, we can't recommend the Canon EOS R6 highly enough.
It makes it into our best full-frame camera round-up for being just as fast as its more expensive sibling, but with a 20.1MP sensor and 4K video capabilities only. You still get absolutely pinpoint-perfect autofocus – with over 6,000 AF points to choose from – and the same remarkable image stabilisation as the EOS R5. It was made for low-light photography and you can save a sizeable AU$900 on the list price at Amazon right now, where it's down to AU$3,395. Moreoever, there's also AU$200 cashback available via redemption to increase your total saving.
So, which one should you buy? If you have the cash to spare, the EOS R5 is the ultimate purchase for photographers and videographers alike.
Needless to say that 45MP resolution and 8K video might be overkill for some users, and that's where the EOS R6 comes in. It's a more sensible option for most photographers, but can compete with the EOS-1D X Mark III in the sports arena just as easily as it shares several of the DSLR's features. Its low pixel count makes it perfect for low light situations and its dual card slots support the cheaper and more commonly available SD format.
Whichever Canon camera you choose, there's now a pretty decent number of native RF lenses to choose from too, including some relatively affordable options that were announced over the course of 2021. So snap up these cameras for less as these prices are better than the Black Friday discounts we saw in November.
