The Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 builds on the success of its 17-28mm forebear, becoming available for Nikon Z instead of just for Sony E-mount cameras

The Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is literally a small wonder. It’s much more compact and lightweight than most regular ‘trinity’ wide-angle zooms yet Tamron has shoehorned some seriously high-end performance into this diminutive lens. It combines fast and consistently accurate autofocus with super-sharp and highly impressive image quality at all zoom settings, at a very reasonable price. It’s a great buy, so long as you have either a Nikon Z or Sony Alpha mirrorless camera, as they’re the only two mount options available.

I’ve long had a bit of a love/hate relationship with ‘trinity’ wide-angle zoom lenses. I love the ultra-wide viewing angles they can deliver, and the versatility of a generous zoom range that picks up the baton from a standard zoom lens. I also love their relatively fast and constant f/2.8 aperture rating, great for freezing action under dull lighting conditions and more besides. However, I hate that trinity wide-angle zooms are typically big, heavy and very expensive, and that they also often lack a front filter attachment thread.

Back in 2019, the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD was a revelation to me. Made exclusively for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, this ‘alternative trinity’ wide-angle zoom was relatively compact, lightweight and affordable. I was so impressed that I gave it a 5-star review rating, and Nikon liked it so much that they adopted the lens as one of their own, badging it as the Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 in 2022.

Tamron has since updated its other two compact, alternative trinity zooms to ‘Generation 2’ editions, while also making them available in Nikon Z mount instead of just being for Sony E mount cameras. The updated lenses in question are the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD G2 standard zoom and the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 telephoto zoom. It’s worth noting that Nikon copied the original versions of these two Tamron lenses as well, although the Tamron G2 versions represent significant upgrades.

Rather than revamping the original 17-28mm lens, Tamron released the all-new 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 in July 2025, beating the original lens’s zoom range at both ends of its travel and bringing other upgrades like a faster autofocus system. Long story short, the Tamron 16-30mm aims to be one of the best wide-angle lenses for Nikon and Sony mirrorless cameras, one of the best lenses for landscapes thanks to a feature I’ll come to in a moment, and one of the best lenses for astrophotography, courtesy of its relatively fast and constant f/2.8 aperture.

Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: Price

Despite being launched six years down the line, during which time most things have significantly risen in price, the Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 has a very similar launch RRP to the previous Tamron 17-28mm, set at $929 / £849 / AU$1,799. The pricing is also quite similar to that of the competing Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens for Sony E and L-mount lenses (but not for Nikon Z) at $989 / £799 / AU$1,700.

The equivalent lens Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8, which was based on the original Tamron, is rather pricier at $1,299 / £1,129 / AU$2,199, while the own-brand Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master II is much more expensive at $2,598 / £2,299 / AU$2,999. All things considered, the Tamron 16-30mm potentially looks quite a bargain.

Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: Design & Handling

In terms of design and handling, I’ll start with something that the Tamron isn’t. It’s not one of the most ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses on the market, lacking a minimum focal length that shrinks to as little as 14mm or even 12mm. Even so, I generally find that 16mm is sufficiently ‘ultra-wide’ for almost any shooting scenario, and there’s a significant upside. Most lenses that give an even wider perspective tend to have a bulbous front element that requires an integral, fixed hood for protection.

The integral hood typically equates to the lack of a front filter attachment thread, making it difficult or impossible to fit the kind of filter that I often like using for landscape photography, like one of the best ND Grads or the best high-density ND filters. You might also like using circular polarizer filters but they don’t tend to play well with ultra-wide-angle lenses, as the polarizing effect becomes uneven across the image frame. Anyway, the point is that the more modest minimum focal length of the Tamron enables a fairly flat front element and the provision of a modestly dimensioned 67mm filter attachment thread. That’s worth its weight in gold as far as I’m concerned.

The lens retains its compact dimensions throughout its entire zoom range. Whether or not is has an ‘internal zoom’ mechanism is debatable, as it does have an inner barrel that extends as you sweep from the longest setting of 30mm down to the minimum of 16mm. However, the inner barrel remains entirely within boundary of the outer barrel at all zoom settings, merely coming closer towards the front at its shortest focal length, as shown in the image below.

The zoom ring works with a smooth action but no hint of zoom creep, as expected from the ‘mostly’ internal zoom mechanism. The doesn’t feature a zoom lock switch as there’s absolutely no need for one. The zoom ring itself is marked at 16mm, 20mm, 24mm and 30mm focal lengths for easy reference.

Unlike the mechanically coupled zoom ring at the rear, the manual focus ring at the front is coupled electronically, as required by the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) autofocus motor. Going a step ahead of the autofocus system fitted in the previous 17-28mm lens, the new one is really rapid and virtually silent. It also enables super-smooth autofocus transitions when shooting video, as well as ensuring fast and accurate subject tracking when shooting stills.

Teaming up with the autofocus system, there’s a customizable function button positioned on the side of the lens barrel, which acts as an AF-Hold button by default. It’s a useful handling extra that falls neatly under the thumb when shooting in landscape orientation mode, although there’s no secondary button up top that would have been similarly ergonomic when shooting in portrait (upright) orientation.

As I’ve mentioned, the separate bayonet-fit hood is a bonus, compared with the integral hoods of many ultra-wide-angle lenses. As usual, it can be reversed for compact stowage and enables the inclusion of a front filter attachment thread.

When fitted in its forward-facing business orientation, the hood doesn’t add greatly to the overall length of the lens, as shown in the following picture. However, it does help to reduce the risk of ghosting and flare, as well as offering physical protection against knocks and scrapes to the front glass element.

The lens also comes with a pinch-action front cap, which makes for easy fitment or removal even if the hood is fitted in its front-facing orientation, as shown below.

Time rarely stands still in the design of camera bodies and lenses, so I’m pleased that a degree of future-proofing is added in the shape of a USB-C port. This enables the use of the Tamron Lens Utility app with the lens, for customization, fine-tuning and applying firmware updates if and when needed. Alternatively, you can use the optional Tamron-Link Bluetooth adapter (sold separately) with Tamron’s mobile app.

Finishing at the back end, the lens has a sturdy metal mounting plate with gold-plated electronic contacts. The plate also features a weather-seal gasket, and further weather-seals are fitted along the entire length of the lens around critical joints, to ensure a splash-proof construction.

Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2: Performance

Eye up a potential car purchase and one of the naughtier questions that might come to mind is ‘how fast does it go’? Well, f/2.8 is about as fast as wide-angle zoom lenses go, and the other question that needs answering is ‘how wide does it go’? The 16mm minimum focal length gives a satisfyingly expansive angle of view on full-frame cameras, as demonstrated in the image below. It should see you right for anything from sweeping landscape vistas to cityscapes and architectural interiors.

Naturally, one of the main advantages of a zoom lens over a prime is that you get a spread of focal lengths. Some zoom lenses zoom further than others but I feel that the Tamron’s 16-30mm is pretty generous. Not only does the short end of 16mm give a properly expansive view, but the long end of 30mm delivers plenty of overlap with my 24-70mm standard zoom lens. The net result is that the Tamron is very versatile, and I don’t need to keep swapping between wide-angle and standard zooms when taking walkabout, travel and general shots.

One thing for which ultra-wide-angle lenses are somewhat notorious is that they often fail to deliver good edge-to-edge sharpness across the entire image frame. I’ve used plenty of top-dollar ultra-wide zooms from some of the world’s best camera companies and come away disappointed in this respect. The ‘legendary’ Nikon AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED for DSLRs is a prime (or rather zoom) example. By contrast, the Tamron has real star quality in delivering excellent sharpness from the center of the frame right out to the extreme edges and corners, throughout its entire zoom range. That’s no mean feat for an ‘alternative’ wide-angle zoom with a compact and lightweight build, and a relatively affordable price tag. Resistance to ghosting and flare is similarly impressive.

Ultra-wide lenses are definitely not the obvious choice when bokeh is on the agenda but nevertheless, the Tamron’s close-focusing abilities and its relatively fast f/2.8 aperture enable a reasonably tight depth of field and an opportunity to isolate subjects within a scene by blurring the background, as shown in the image below.

I’ve tested and reviewed many compact and lightweight lenses designed for mirrorless cameras. One thing that almost always holds true, especially for wide-angle lenses, is that there’s a really heavy reliance on automatic in-camera correction for distortion, which can’t be disabled in camera menus. I was surprise therefore to see that auto correction for distortion along with corrections for other aberrations wasn’t ‘forced on’ when using the Tamron, and that the optical performance of the lens is again impressive in these respects without being propped up by in-camera corrections. Again, that holds true throughout the entire zoom range, the extremities of which are shown in the pair of images below.

The following gallery of sample shots was taken at the East Somerset Railway in the South West of England. It’s a delightful historic railway that’s run as a charity by a friendly bunch of volunteers, and is well worth a visit. Weather conditions were pretty dreadful during my outing with the Tamron, being rainy and overcast with very flat lighting, and thus presenting a proper challenge to the lens. Shots include those taken out in the rain (also testing the weather-seals of the lens) plus the interiors of station buildings and the nearby engine shed and workshop.

We run a range of lab tests under controlled conditions, using the Imatest Master testing suite. Photos of test charts are taken across the range of apertures and zooms (where available), then analyzed for sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberrations.

We use Imatest SFR (spatial frequency response) charts and analysis software to plot lens resolution at the center of the image frame, corners and mid-point distances, across the range of aperture settings and, with zoom lenses, at four different focal lengths. The tests also measure distortion and color fringing (chromatic aberration).

For such a wide-angle lens, center-to-mid sharpness is very good when shooting wide-open at f/2.8, and gets even better when narrowing the aperture by a single f/stop. Extreme edge/corner-sharpness looks relatively unimpressive but that’s pretty common for ultra-wide-angle lenses, when shooting test charts at necessarily very close range. In ‘real-world’ shooting, the Tamron proved very sharp right out to the edges of the frame.

Fringing:

Color fringing is very negligible, not just in the central region of the frame but right out at the edges and corners. Performance is excellent in this respect, throughout the entire zoom range and at all aperture settings.

Distortion:

I’d expect noticeable distortions from this type of lens but barrel distortion is actually quite minimal at the most wide-angle setting of 16mm. Pincushion distortion can be more noticeable in the 24-30mm sector of the zoom range but there’s relatively little reliance on automatic in-camera correction, which can actually be disabled in camera menus.

I feel that the Tamron 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is a worthy upgrade over the preceding 17-28mm lens. Let’s not forget that Nikon liked the original Tamron 17-28mm so much that it licensed the lens and badged it as its own. The new 16-30mm goes wider and longer, boosting the zoom range in both directions, while also featuring an upgraded voice-coil motor autofocus system, enhanced handling and terrific all-round performance.

The Tamron doesn’t go quite as wide as most ‘trinity’ ultra-wide-angle zooms but it comes pretty close, while matching the fairly fast and constant f/2.8 aperture. And it does this in a relatively compact and lightweight yet weather-sealed construction that makes the lens very easy to live with. The cherry on the cake is that you can easily fit landscape-friendly filters via a modestly sized 67mm front attachment thread. All in all, it’s a cracking lens at a very reasonable price.

Alternatives

Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary

The Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary is a direct competitor to the Sony E-mount version of the Tamron lens and is also available in an L-mount edition, but there’s no Nikon Z-mount version. It’s another ‘alternative trinity’ wide-angle zoom with impressive performance and a relatively lightweight build and price tag, selling for around $989 / £799 / AU$1,700.

Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8

Obviously only available in Nikon Z-mount, the equivalent Nikon Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is based on the original Tamron zoom. In fact, it’s basically the same lens as the older Tamron but with Nikon styling and a Nikon badge on it. With that in mind, it’s relatively pricey at around $1,299 / £1,129 / AU$2,199, and somewhat outclassed by the newer Tamron 16-30mm lens.
