The Japanese market research firm BCN+R has released its monthly roundup of the top 10 best-selling interchangeable-lens cameras for September, and this month’s ranking features an unlikely Micro Four Thirds (MFT) shooter: the Olympus PEN E-P7.

The 20MP, lightweight, entry-level MFT model placed fifth for last month – albeit as part of a double-zoom lens kit including a 14-42mm EZ and 40-150mm lens – climbing three spots from eighth position in August. (The E-P7 only launched in Europe and Japan and is not available in the US.)

BCN+R tracks point-of-sale data from over 2,300 brick-and-mortar and online electronics and appliance retailers across Japan.

The top 10 best-selling camera models are typically determined from around 120 different camera bodies and respective lens bundle combinations, of which only an estimated 15% are MFT cameras.

And in a world dominated by super-spec full-frame mirrorless and legacy DSLR cameras, the E-P7 has held the fort down for the MFT system in this ranking.

Since being released in 2021 – the first Olympus model produced by OM System after it acquired the imaging division of Olympus – the E-P7 has featured in BCN+R’s monthly top-10 roundup at least once in each of the last three years, as well as in its release year.

But the E-P7 is no longer the newest PEN series camera around. Last month, OM System unveiled the new PEN, which carries a retro compact design but has weather-sealing and in-body stabilization. It doesn't start shipping in Japan until the end of October, but it will be interesting to see if the E-P7 is swapped out for the new PEN in future rankings.

The E-P7, however, sits among a list that's heavily dominated by crop sensor cameras.

The remainder of this month’s ranking was mostly a showdown between Sony and Canon, with a sprinkling of Fujifilm. The Sony ZV-E10 II took the top spot, followed by the Canon EOS R10 and two lens-combination variations of the EOS R50.

The latter half of the rankings was made up of the Sony A7 V, Fujifilm X-M5, Sony A6700 and A6400, as well as the Sony ZV-E10. Aside from the A7 V, all the other camera models came as part of a lens bundle.

The list from BCN+R tends to include more budget-model cameras, as the rankings take data from several retailers, including Amazon, while rankings from Kitamura and Yodobashi are specialty photo retailers.
