There have been plenty of exciting rumors regarding the Canon EOS R3 since its recent development announcement. However, one of the key questions many photographers have had is whether this new Canon mirrorless camera is set to be the flagship mirrorless for the imaging giant, or whether that camera has yet to be announced.

Well, now it seems we finally have an answer to this question! PhotoWebExpo recently interviewed Andrey Tishchenko, the Head of Product and Consumer Expertise at Canon Russia – and there are some interesting tidbits of information revealed.

PhotoWebExpo's interview (Google Translated from Russian by Canon Rumors) discusses what type of market the Canon EOS R3 will be aimed at. Tishchenko says, "Canon is aiming this camera at professionals and advanced amateurs. The Canon EOS R3 is not intended to replace the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. The camera will be intended for wildlife, sports, racing, and photojournalism. The camera will be smaller than the EOS-1D X Mark III as well."

Tishchenko continues, "Canon says this camera is a new line for the EOS R system. It will be slotted between the EOS R5 and a future flagship camera, the EOS R3 is not the EOS R flagship."

This confirmation that the Canon EOS R3 won't be considered Canon's mirrorless flagship is certainly interesting. This implies that we could be seeing a Canon EOS R1 at some point in the future – although there's no indication of when this could be as of yet.

In the meantime, it seems that professional sports and news photographers will continue to use the tried-and-tested Canon EOS-1D X series.
