Popular Sony FX5 cinema camera, originally expected in July, may not arrive until November after multiple delays – and one video hints why

The twice-delayed popular Sony FX5 cinema camera may not begin shipping until November after two delays.

The Sony FX5 had only been around for a day before Sony announced that an unusually high number of pre-orders meant the cinema camera would be delayed. But then in August, the camera was delayed again, this time “due to production issues” with an unknown ship date.

Sony Japan updated that delay announcement again in September, changing the estimated shipping date from “unknown” to “late October or later” (translated by Google).

Now, Sony UK is listing a November 16 ship date for pre-orders. Sony’s US website isn’t currently taking pre-orders and doesn’t list a ship date, though pre-orders are open at a few retailers. In the US, Adorama lists the expected availability as October 15.

The first delay announcement was due to an unexpected number of pre-orders, suggesting that the FX5’s 5K open date and internal RAW made the cinema camera more popular than Sony first anticipated.

The second delay, however, was announced for “production issues,” but Sony didn’t specify what those issues were.

While Sony hasn’t specified what the production issues are, one Sony user based in Mexico City shared a video on Reddit suggesting that the production issue could lie in the LCD screen. In the video, the LCD screen appears to be coming loose from its housing, exposing some of the camera’s electronics inside the housing for the flip screen.

The post shared on Reddit claims that the videographer received three Sony FX5 bodies from initial pre-orders and that all three cameras are sharing the same screen issue. Another Reddit user posted a video in the comments showing a slight separation of the screen, while many Redditors are theorizing that the LCD screen could be the reason behind the delay.

While a production issue is rarely a good thing, original rumors worried that the AI-fueled memory shortage could be having an impact. Sony Rumors is hoping the LCD issue is something that's easier to correct than a global chip shortage.

Sony’s warranty against manufacturer defects varies by country, but the company has a one-year warranty on the FX5 in the US and two years in the UK.
