Fujifilm’s cinema camera just got both a dedicated viewfinder and support for controlling and monitoring the camera with an oversized iPad screen. On Tuesday, September 09, Fujifilm announced two key updates to the GFX Eterna 55: an upcoming viewfinder as well as a new mobile app for both iOS and iPadOS.
The two updates create additional workflow options for working with Fujifilm’s first dedicated cinema camera, the GFX Eterna 55. The launches bring both a distraction-free viewfinder option and the ability to control focus and zoom and monitor what the camera sees using a mobile app.
Eterna ProRemote brings monitoring and remote controls to iPhone and iPad
The app, Eterna ProRemote, is set to launch first, with an arrival slated for mid September 2026. While the cinema camera comes with a detachable 5-inch monitor that can be rigged to the camera’s box-style design from multiple attachment points, the app offers filmmakers another option for monitoring and control, even when the camera’s controls may be inaccessible, such as in certain crane and rigged setups.
The Externa ProRemote can connect in three different ways, depending on what the filmmaker needs to control. A simple Bluetooth connection allows for a quick connection and access to controls to start and stop the recording, control zoom, and save or copy settings, but doesn’t offer live view.
An advanced single-camera Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection mode adds live view without requiring an access code, while an advanced Wi-Fi or Wired LAN connection requires an access code but supports live view for up to four cameras, as well as remote recording.
Fujifilm says that the app can also adjust the camera’s focus, iris, and zoom parameters. But the app also supports multiple advanced monitoring tools, including waveform, vectorscope, and histogram.
The app will also allow creators to save and load custom camera settings.
The Fujifilm VF-GFXC2 is a new viewfinder built for the Eterna 55
While the new app is expected to arrive by the end of the month, the Eterna 55’s new viewfinder, the VF-GFXC2, is expected to debut sometime before the end of 2026. The electronic viewfinder offers a 2048x1536 resolution in a native 4:3 aspect ratio, built for the cinema camera’s open-gate shooting.
Adding the viewfinder to the cinema camera supports enhanced visibility in bright scenes, where reflections may make the camera’s screen more challenging to read. An eyecup helps block light, while the viewfinder itself is designed with a cylindrical shape for gripping and the same machined aluminum exterior as the camera body itself.
Along with a diopter, the viewfinder also has several function buttons built in, giving filmmakers quick access to shortcuts like a 1.0x magnification mode to check focus.
Fujifilm has not yet announced a price or shipping date for the VF-GFXC2.
The simultaneous launch of both a dedicated viewfinder and a mobile app shows Fujifilm is continuing to expand on the GFX Eterna 55, the brand’s first dedicated cinema camera that boasts a 102MP medium format sensor.
