Nikon ZR named one of TIME’s best inventions of 2026 for bridging the gap between social-media content creation and high-end video
Time Magazine has named the Nikon ZR one of the best inventions of 2026
The Nikon ZR has been named by Time Magazine as one of the best inventions of 2026, praising the mirrorless camera for attempting to bridge the gap between social-media video creators and high-end video production.
It noted the camera’s integrated RED color science and arguably the Nikon ZR’s most high-profile creator, Jason Momoa. Just last week, the Aquaman actor was given a pair of custom all-brass Nikon ZR cameras for use in his On the Roam documentary series.
A growing list of accolades
Recognition from Time Magazine is the latest in a growing list of industry awards for the Nikon ZR, which took gold at the EISA Awards in the Photo/Video Camera category, while it also triumphed in the TIPA World Awards in the Best Advanced Compact Cinema Camera category, as well as earning product design accolades at the Red Dot Awards and iF Design Awards.
One-of-a-kind cinema camera
It’s not surprising that the Nikon ZR has proven a critical darling. Digital Camera World labelled the camera “a brilliant ‘baby’ RED cinema camera at a barely believable price.” Beyond the camera’s celebrated Z-mount lineage, it stands out among many of its peers for its fanless design, in-camera 32-bit float audio, 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization, and gorgeous 4-inch rear LCD screen.
The shallow grip and rectangular, viewfinderless form factor is highly riggable, and despite lacking a chunky onboard fan, its passive cooling system manages to keep internals cool by allowing heat to pass through the camera’s magnesium-alloy body. As for core video specs, the headline is that coveted internal R3D NE recording, with video footage maxing out at 6K / 60p and 4K / 120p (cropped).
If you’re a run-and-gun videographer looking for an affordable and portable cinema camera that breaks the mould slightly, then the Nikon ZR comes highly recommended.
