You see, Nikon’s big announcement yesterday was the development of a range of nine Z Cinema lenses, but it’s a firmware development announcement that’s really got me champing at the bit. Nikon has said that it’s developing firmware 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, and beyond that it’s developing several requested features, including open-gate recording and a de-squeeze display for anamorphic lenses. Nikon is aiming to roll these out at some point next year.
This is huge news for both existing and prospective Nikon ZR owners. Due to the ZR’s fanless design, I had assumed a lack of open gate was the compromise since it produces more heat, but clearly Nikon has found a workaround.
