Nikon has announced two new Z-mount teleconverters that are designed to expand the reach of compatible Nikkor Z lenses. The first is the Z Teleconverter TC-1.4x, which will give users 40% more reach. The second is the Z Teleconverter TC-2.0x, which will enable users to double their reach. This means a 200mm focal length will become 400mm, enabling the capture of incredible super-telephoto shots.
Nikon promises that the advanced optical design of these teleconverters will ensure sharp, high-resolution images – and the minimum focus distance of the lens itself will remain unchanged.

Announced alongside the new Nikon Z5, both of the new Z Teleconverters are weather sealed to keep dust and moisture out. They're also constructed from tough, textured anodized aluminum and treated with Nikon's fluorine coat, which is designed to repel dust and dirt.
However, while these two teleconverters certainly sound impressive, they're currently only compatible with one lens – the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, which was originally due to arrive in 2019, before being delayed to 14 February 2020, and then delayed indefinitely. Unfortunately there is is still no official word on when it will arrive – although in an ideal world Nikon will want to time the release with the teleconverters.
It seems that the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 suffered delays in production due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, on a brighter note, Nikon has confirmed that as the Nikkor Z lens line-up expands, more lenses will appear that are compatible with these Z Teleconverters – with the upcoming 100-400mm and 200-600mm optics on the Nikon Z lens road map being the next candidates, as and when they arrive.
Robert Harmon, Senior Commercial Planning Manager for Nikon UK says, "Nikon's new teleconverters bring a new dimension of flexibility to the Nikon Z mirrorless system. As the Nikkor Z line-up expands, your options for using the Z Teleconverters will grow. Whether you shoot action, wildlife, or nature, you'll be able to get closer to the details without switching lenses."
