UPDATE: We've heard rumors about Sigma producing lenses for the Canon RF system or the Nikon Z system for a while, but now the Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki has confirmed that these rumors could be made official. In an article published (opens in new tab) in the ICAN Management Review, Kazuto Yamaki says, "Less cameras sold also means less potential customers interested in buying a lens, which is why our short-term strategy indeed involves a possibility of introducing lenses with new mounts – to photography systems such as Nikon Z or Canon EOS R.

"So far, however, the number of orders for our lenses is still above our manufacturing capacities, and especially the capacities of our R&D department."

This will come as heartening news to Nikon Z and Canon RF users who have been looking forward to seeing what Sigma will have to offer these new mounts. However, it doesn't seem that we'll be seeing any specific products this year…

ORIGINAL STORY: Canon has produced some incredible lenses for its RF mount system, such as the RF 50mm f/1.2 and the brilliant RF 28-70mm f/2. However, it can't be denied that these native Canon lenses can be a little expensive. Fortunately, Sigma might be able to start producing Art series lenses for Canon RF mount cameras.

Sigma is an extremely popular lens manufacturer for a number of reasons. They produce exceptionally good glass without the exceptionally high price points. For the last couple years, it seems Sigma has been focusing on its L mount alliance and Sony E mount mirrorless cameras. Fortunately for Canon RF users, this is seemingly about to change.

Canon News has recently reported (opens in new tab) that Sigma may start producing lenses for the RF mount. It hasn't yet been confirmed whether these lenses are going to be designed specifically for the RF mount, or whether they'll simply be adaptations of current DSLR lenses. When Sigma first started to produce mirrorless lenses, it adapted existing DSLR lenses instead of producing new designs to make use of the new mounts.

Canon currently has an adapter available that enables users to shoot EF mount lenses on RF mount cameras. However, the issue with this method is that it negates one of the most valuable benefits of moving over to mirrorless cameras – the shorter flange distance.

Essentially, the shorter flange distance allows for more effective optical designs, which is why we're seeing f/2 zoom lenses and tiny 85mm f/1.4 lenses for mirrorless cameras.

If Sigma does start to produce lenses designed for the RF mount, this could prove to be extremely popular. Canon is the most prolific camera brand in the world and many photographers love the great quality and affordable pricing of Sigma lenses, making this a match in photographic heaven.
