July has finally come calling and, if rumours are to be believed, then Canon could be on the verge of officially revealing its newest full-frame mirrorless flagship. Reports suggest the EOS R5 and the much-talked-about EOS R6 will be announced in 'early July', so it's a good time to get your hands on an RF-mount lens.

And a good place to start is with a standard zoom. Canon's RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is admittedly an expensive investment for what's been labelled a kit lens – carrying a price tag of AU$1,699 on the manufacturer's online storefront and at major camera retailers – but it's a solid performer.

Canon has done well with its RF-mount lenses and this 24-105mm f/4L is one of the best standard zooms money can buy despite its 'kit lens' status. With great sharpness across the board, brilliant autofocus and up to five stops of image stabilisation, it makes a great pairing with the EOS R and EOS RP. And if you've been holding out for the EOS R5 or R6, then get this is now and you'll be well prepared.
