OM System has released a firmware update for three of its telephoto lenses, expanding their high-speed shooting capabilities and making it easier for photographers to capture fast-moving subjects at a distance.

Firmware version 1.1 for the M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/4.0 PRO, M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS II and M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 IS adds support for shooting at up to 50 frames per second (fps) in Sequential Shooting SH2 and Pro Capture SH2 modes.

The new functionality works in these lenses when paired with the OM System OM-1, OM-1 Mark II or OM-3 camera bodies.

It’s a good idea to hold off downloading the latest firmware for a few weeks. This should give enough time for any new issues to arise in community chatter and for OM System to address them. Keep an eye on Digital Camera World, and we’ll let you know about any problems.

A previous firmware update already brought 50fps shooting in both Sequential Shooting SH2 and Pro Capture SH2 modes to other M.Zuiko lenses – such as the Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO.

Version 1.1 widens this feature to other models within OM System’s Micro Four Thirds lens lineup, bringing greater versatility for wildlife photographers in particular. Bird photographers, who often need to capture fleeting moments, will especially appreciate 50fps while using Pro Capture SH2 mode.

This mode continuously buffers images following a half-press of the shutter button, enabling you to save frames captured before fully pressing it. Sequential Shooting SH2, on the other hand, captures a rapid burst of images while the shutter button is fully depressed.

Rather than introducing new optical capabilities, firmware version 1.1 gives more opportunities to make use of high-speed continuous shooting with your existing OM System telephoto equipment, ideally helping you capture fast action without needing to change lenses.
