Sony has officially announced the Sony FX6, a full-frame camcorder with 15 stops of dynamic range that captures 4K video up to 120p, FullHD video at up to 240p, and is a low light beast with sensitivity that can be cranked up to ISO409,000.

As neatly summed up by YouTuber Gerald Undone, the Sony FX6 is essentially a Sony A7S III in a shrunken-down Sony FX9 body – though it features some new tricks, such as the ability to record in DCI 4K and make cinema-level adjustments such as changes to shutter angle.

The FX6 appears to feature the same 10.2MP back-illuminated Exmor R sensor as the A7S III, along with the same Bionz XR processor, along with the same effective dual native ISO with a base of ISO800 and an enhanced sensitivity of ISO12800.

It captures 10-bit 4:2:2 All-I in DCI 4K up to 60p, in QFHD 4K up to 120p, and in FullHD (1080p) up to 240p. It also offers Long GOP XAVC recording in 4:2:0 8-bit QFHD 4K up to 120pvi or 10-bit 4:2:2 FullHD up to 240p.

The Sony FX6 employs the manufacturer's S-Cinetone color science featured in the Venice cameras, with S-Log3, S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine for post-production flexibility and seamless integration with senior cinema cameras.

Taken directly from the Alpha cameras is Sony's rock-solid Fast Hybrid phase detection autofocus system, with 627 focus points along with advanced face detection and real-time eye AF.

Again like the A7S III, the FX6 features twin CFexpress Type A card slots that also double as UHS-II SD card slots. However, in accommodating the built-in electronic variable ND filter system (which unlike optical NDs can be linearly controlled from 1/4ND to 1/128ND) it has had to forego the A7S III's stabilization system – though it still records gyroscopic data that can be decoded in Catalyst Browse for 'post IBIS'.

The magnesium alloy body weighs 890g and measures 116 x 153 x 114mm, and features a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen that can be mounted on multiple locations to accommodate different shooting scenarios.

The Sony FX6 will be available in December for $5,998 / £5,994 (approximately AU$8,254).
