Camp Snap cameras are first known for the screen-free design – but the wide variety of color options may be a close second. Now, the screen-free brand’s first video shooter is getting its first set of custom colors. The Camp Snap CS-8 is getting three new color options.

The Camp Snap CS-8 is a digital video camera inspired by retro Super 8 cameras, down to the trigger-style shooting and oversized shape. The original launch mixed a classic black wrap with silver accents.

Now, the popular screen-free camera will gain three new color options in addition to the original black: Espresso (brown), Champagne (off-white), and Rose (pink). The new colorways also change up the accent color. Rose goes pink on even the shiny accent pieces, while Champagne goes for a gold hue instead of silver, and Espresso opts for white accents.

The launch brings a more custom look to the popular retro video camera while maintaining the same 2.7K resolution and five customizable video filters as the original.

But perhaps even more interesting is that Camp Snap is also dropping a major hint as to just how popular the CS-8 has been. The camera has sold $20M (about £15M / AU$28 / CA$28M) over an 11-month period, according to Camp Snap, which feels quite impressive for a camera that retails for $199 / £147 / AU$302.

The retro camcorder has also been spotted in the hands of several celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Alix Earle, Selena Gomez, Joe Jonas, and the US Men’s Hockey team.

Screen-free cameras have been rising in popularity, and now several brands have launched versions of cameras built for unplugging. The $20 million in sales hints that the screen-free trend is a pretty significant one.

When I shot with the CS-8, I loved how the footage felt immediately like an old memory. The small sensor isn’t built for modern videos – though the aspect ratio dial is – and the video footage feels just as retro as the camera looks.

The downside of that Super 8-inspired design is that packing one on a trip does take up quite a bit of room, but the retro dials are a charming trade-off.

The new Camp Snap CS-8 colors will be available alongside the original black from the Camp Snap store.
