If you've ever shot an important event, you'll understand the irrational fear of your memory cards being lost, broken or spontaneously corrupted in the time between the shoot itself and your first opportunity to back up your cards. Luckily, if you have one of a select list of Canon cameras, you now have a solution to this nail-biting issue.
There's now a new integration with Google Photos that allows for automatic image backups over Wi-Fi. Google and Canon have worked together to integrate Google Photos into the image.canon app that's currently available on both Android and iOS.

Google says, "If you own a DSLR or point-and-shoot camera, you know that getting your photos backed up can be a process. You often need cables or adapters to take them off of your camera or SD card and save them, and it might take a number of steps to get it all done.
"We've worked with Canon so you can easily upload the moments captured on your Canon devices directly to Google Photos over Wi-Fi – no plugging in your camera or taking our your SD card."
While not all Canon cameras are compatible with this new function, all of the recent models do seem to be. You can find the full list here, but compatible cameras include the Canon EOS R5, Canon EOS R6, Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EOS M6 Mark II and Canon EOS 6D Mark II.
To take advantage of this new feature, all you need to do is set up automatic transfers in the image.canon app. You will need a Google One subscription in order to use this cloud storage benefit, but Google is currently offering Canon users a free month of Google One to try out the service.
