Could the Nikon Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S be launched this month? Rumors heat up following leaked images
It’s all been quiet since Nikon’s development announcement for its upcoming super-fast, pro-grade zoom, but lately it’s been seen in the wild
Images of the yet-to-be-released Nikon Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S have surfaced online, giving a tantalizing glimpse of the much-anticipated optic in action. The imagery, shared by Nikon Rumors, was captured at the weekend’s F1 Singapore Grand Prix and appears to show the super-telephoto zoom lens being used by two different photographers. In both cases, the optic is attached to the flagship Nikon Z9.
According to the rumor website, we could see an official release at the end of the month. As to where we stand right now, Nikon acknowledged its existence back in May, via a development announcement, and has set up a product page. But official details are thin on the ground.
What we do know is that the professional-grade S-line optic will have a built-in 1.4x teleconverter, pushing the telephoto end to 420mm f/4. On paper, this should be a fine lens for wildlife and sports photographers who want to keep their shutter speed high and their ISO low, thanks to that fast aperture. Nikon already offers built-in 1.4x teleconverters on its Z 400mm f/2.8 and Z 600mm f/4 prime lenses.
The lens will be the spiritual successor to the Nikon AF-S 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR, which was the very last DSLR lens Nikon announced, back in 2019 alongside the Nikon D6. That lens has since been discontinued, but it was priced at around $9,500 / £9,500 at launch, so I’d expect a similarly range-topping price point for the new Z lens.
