The Nikon Z8 has just received a new firmware update. Something I really appreciate about Nikon is its dedication to supporting cameras long after their release, and over the years the ‘Big N’ has rolled out big updates, including mammoth upgrades for the Z8 itself. But not every firmware update can be ground-shaking. Firmware Version 3.11, as reported on by Nikon Rumors, is a quality-of-life upgrade; it fixes a few problems, but doesn’t introduce anything new.
As always, unless any of the fixes are vital to your workflow, I recommend letting new firmware updates sit for a week or two before installing them yourself, just to ensure no teething problems are reported. If it’s been a while since you last updated your Nikon Z8’s firmware, installing this latest update will automatically install all prior updates, such as the big Firmware Version 3.00.
Nikon Z8 Firmware Version 3.11 fixes:
- Unsupported features would sometimes become selectable when wirelessly connected to NX Tether.
- The [High-frequency flicker reduction] setting would sometimes change when [High-frequency flicker reduction] and another role, such as [Protect], were assigned to the same custom control.
- The camera would sometimes stop responding during shooting if certain operations were performed after settings were made in [Manage Picture Control].
You must also ensure that you know how to update your Nikon camera’s firmware and that you maintain good practice. Nikon makes it clear that you should only update the firmware of your Z Series camera with a Z-mount Nikkor lens or Nikon FTZ adapter attached. Updating firmware with a third-party lens attached has been known to cause a camera malfunction.
