New Nikon firmware “unfreezes” the Coolpix P1000 bridge camera and bolsters the Nikon Z5 II's practicality
Firmware version 1.9 for the Coolpix P1000 sorts a nasty bug causing the camera to freeze, while firmware version 1.20 brings a host of practical tweaks
Nikon has released a pair of firmware updates: one for the Nikon Coolpix P1000 bridge camera and another for the Nikon Z5 II entry-level mirrorless camera.
Firmware version 1.9 for the P1000 sorts a rare yet serious issue that would cause the camera to temporarily freeze when adjusting the zoom while in burst mode.
Firmware version 1.20 brings a host of updates to the Z5 II, including more versatile aperture control when recording video and a host of changes to the settings menus.

It’s a good idea to hold off downloading the latest firmware for a few weeks. This should give enough time for any new issues to arise in community chatter, and for Nikon to address them. Keep an eye on Digital Camera World and we'll let you know about any problems.
Nikon hasn’t given any technical explanation as to why the Coolpix would freeze while zooming in burst mode. However, it’s thought that processor-heavy burst sequences could overwhelm the camera buffer, causing the device to stop responding.

Arguably, the two most practical updates to the Z5 II are the ability to save focus position to user settings and an extension of the ISO auto shutter-speed threshold.
The former enables your saved custom shooting modes (U1 / U2) to remember your preset focus distance, which is especially useful for tripod or fixed studio setups. The latter offers finer control over when the camera steps up ISO versus dropping the shutter speed, helping avoid unwanted motion blur when shooting handheld.
There’s also a new “auto-switch” option under the Setup menu, giving you more control over toggling between the rear LCD screen and viewfinder. And a new FTP inactivity timeout automatically manages idle connections to preserve battery life.
So, a major update for the Coolpix P1000, which will hopefully solve what was a serious issue for a small number of users. Whereas the Z5II gets a suite of tweaks which, together, could bolster workflows meaningfully.
