Yongnuo YN33mm f/1.4 DA DSM WL Pro review: not just an autofocus lens, it’s got built-in RF wireless too

The clever APS-C format Yongnuo YN33mm F1.4 DA DSM WL Pro is a not-so-standard prime, adding wireless communication for optional remote control

Digital Camera World Verdict

I feel like the Yongnuo YN33mm F1.4 DA DSM WL Pro is the polar opposite of a ‘dumb lens’. It doesn’t just have autofocus and full electronic communication with the host camera body but goes further with lots of handling extras and even RF wireless communication for pairing with Yongnuo’s optional BR-L1 remote controller. And it all comes at a very affordable price.

Pros

  • +

Customizable control ring and Fn buttons

  • +

RF Wireless for optional remote control

  • +

    Good performance and build quality

Cons

The Yongnuo YN33mm F1.4 DA DSM WL Pro is a tempting proposition. Like most photographers, I’ve always loved the natural perspective and fast aperture of a ‘nifty fifty’, at least on full-frame cameras. This APS-C format lens gives the same viewing angle with an ‘effective’ 50mm focal length, and a fast f/1.4 aperture rating that leaves ‘trinity’ f/2.8 zooms for dead.

Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN | C

The Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN | C (Contemporary) is available in Canon EF-M, Nikon Z (DX) Sony E and Micro Four Thirds mount options. It’s pricier than the Yongnuo but still pretty good value for money. The Sigma gives an ‘effective’ focal length of 45mm, close to the 50mm standard.

Viltrox AF 33mm F1.4

The Viltrox AF 33mm F1.4 is one of a trilogy of APS-C format Viltrox lenses that have a pretty much identical size and weight, giving classic ‘effective’ focal lengths of about 35mm, 50mm and 85mm, all with fast f/1.4 apertures. They’re standout value for money and are available in Canon EF-M, Nikon Z (DX), Sony E and Fujifilm X mount options.
