GoPro's most powerful action camera ever

Type: Action camera | Sensor: 1/2.3in | Megapixels: 12MP | Screen: 2in, touch screen LCD | Viewfinder: None | Max burst speed: 6fps | Max video resolution: 4K at 60fps | Weight: 117g | User level: Beginner/Enthusiast

Slick 4K video at 60fps
Superb image stabilisation
Expensive
Some fiddly controls

Think of action cameras and the GoPro brand immediately pops into your head. The discretely tiny and robust HERO6 Black is waterproof to a depth of 10m, or 60m with an optional housing, and it follows on from the previous year’s GoPro HERO5 Black

Outwardly there's little to tell them apart, but inside it's a different matter. The GoPro HERO6 Black can capture super-slow motion video at a high resolution, and can output a stabilised still image in 4K, and transfers everything to a smartphone at swifter speeds too.

The biggest change with the GoPro HERO6 Black, however, is the arrival of a custom processor, dubbed GP1. This enables 4K video at a smooth 60fps, as opposed to its predecessor’s maximum 30fps. Image stabilisation has also been improved, and it can now be activated when shooting 4K video, although only to 30fps.

There’s also the ability to capture 12MP stills, in either single, burst or time-lapse modes, while a new addition is an HDR mode that can be used to retain more detail across different areas of high-contrast scenes.

The entire design of the GoPro HERO6 Black is tightly compact, meaning that the microSD card fits snugly up against the user swappable battery (which is the same one as that found in the HERO5 Black). There is, however, room for a 2in touchscreen on the back for reviewing videos and photos, and making settings tweaks – using simple swipes and taps – with what feels like possibly the world’s smallest touch-sensitive interface.

GoPro HERO6 Black: more voice control

The HERO6 Black also has another trick up its sleeve: voice control. This isn’t a default setting, but it can be easily activated via the camera’s menus. There are 12 simple voice commands governing just about anything you’d want to do with the camera, and while this feature was present on the HERO5 Black, the HERO6 Black adds a new ‘Wake On Voice’ function, which turns the camera on after you’ve first put it into a lower-power listening mode.

To our eyes, the new processor also delivers better image quality and improved dynamic range, whether you're shooting indoors or out. In short, the GoPro HERO6 is pretty much the best action camera you can buy at the time of writing.
