It’s been a while since we’ve had a good tangible Nikon camera rumor to set pulses racing – but that’s exactly what we’ve got this week, thanks to a supposed Apple oversight on a list of compatible ProRes RAW products.
The report from New Camera claims that beneath the Nikon section, the listing was as follows: Z6 III, Z70, Z8, Z9, ZR. Wait a minute… Z70? There’s no such thing as a Nikon Z70. Or is there?
The error has since been removed, leaving Nikon fans to ponder two possibilities: either it was a completely innocent typo or an unreleased device.
What makes the news even more tantalizing is the timing. Nikon’s had an exceedingly quiet 2026 thus far. We’ve only got two lens releases in the Nikon Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 and Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II, and one lens development announcement in the Nikon Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S.
And with Nikon’s latest financial results laid bare, the time seems ripe for a big camera launch.
Spiritual successor to the Nikon D500?
Still, the Nikon Z70 wasn’t on my bingo card. Most of the Nikon rumors have centered around a fixed-lens full-frame compact camera and a Nikon Z9 II. And indeed, in my own mind, I’ve been patiently waiting for a Nikon Zfc II.
But there’s a possibility that a Nikon Z70 could turn out to be exactly what I’ve wanted all along: a mirrorless successor to the Nikon D500.
This is pure conjecture, of course, but thus far, any Nikon Z Camera with a ‘0’ has been an APS-C camera: namely the Z30, Z50 and Z50 II. And in a world where the already very capable Nikon Z50 II exists, you’d have to assume it’s either going to be a more entry-level or premium offering.
Add to that Nikon’s clear targeting of the enthusiast-to-pro market in recent years, alongside rumors of a high-end crop-sensor offering, and it seems most likely that if a Nikon Z70 were in the works, it’d be a flagship APS-C camera, à la Nikon D500.
New Camera also makes the important point that if there’s stock in the Apple post, it would suggest the ability to capture internal ProRes RAW, which is a high-end video feature.
The outlet then goes so far as to list the rumored specs of a surmised Nikon flagship APS-C mirrorless, including a 26MP sensor, IBIS, dual card slots, and high-end Nikon AF and burst speeds.
If Nikon were to release such a camera, I would also hope that it would follow in the footsteps of the Nikon D500 in delivering extensive weather sealing.
