Internet sleuth tips Nikon for a big September camera announcement (report)

It’s been a little will they won’t they when it comes to Nikon lately. Just last week I wrote about a rumor claiming big delays across the board, and now Nikon Rumors is back with a more positive tale from the grapevine, surmising some kind of Nikon release in September.

Apparently, a reader has looked into the schedules of various Nikon Ambassadors and found that many of them are free during the week of September 12, but scheduled for Nikon events on September 26. This has resulted in the theory that Nikon could be launching something in mid-September and showing it off later in the month.

The argument is supposedly bolstered by Nikon ambassador Kristi Odom, whose schedule is apparently free in both instances. Kristi is an award-winning wildlife photographer, which has caused the same camera sleuth to surmise that she’d be the perfect pro to test a rumored flagship APS-C camera (Nikon Z70) and the Nikon Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S (which has already had a development announcement).

While something could indeed be released in September, I’ve been burned by the rumor mill so many times lately, I’m not sure picking apart evidence like the imaging equivalent of Hercule Poirot is particularly helpful. After all, only a couple of weeks ago, everything was supposedly delayed…

And yet, if Nikon is intent on releasing something this year, we are definitely heading into the period where that could happen. You don’t have to be Jessica Fletcher to work out that Nikon has a habit of announcing cameras at this time of year. The Nikon Z6 II, Nikon Z7 II, Nikon Z9, Nikon Zf, Nikon Z50 II, and Nikon Zf Silver were all announced in September, October, or November. Anything later is a bit too close to Christmas, and then that’s the year over with.

As to what Nikon could announce, that’s beyond me. Lately we’ve had rumors regarding a Nikon Z70, fixed-lens full-frame Nikon, and of course, a Nikon Z9 II. I, for one, am still keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed for a Nikon Zfc II. So, take your pick. I’ll keep my ear and magnifying glass to the ground and let you know if more Nikon camera rumors surface.
