A video of the original Doom running on a Hasselblad X2D 100C has appeared on Reddit by rrRadium and has been published on YouTube by Andrea Pizzini. I guess all Doom players aspire to go medium-format eventually.

Having reviewed the Hasselblad footage, I was initially suspicious due to a visible cable connection, not to mention Hasselblad's locked operating system. However, rrRadium has published a link to a variety of assets on GitHub strongly indicating that this is a legitimate project. Pretty neat!

As always, though, it's important to remember that any unofficial firmware update or any attempt to change the architecture of your camera's operating system could brick the camera and potentially void any existing warranty.

Remarkably, this isn’t the first time somebody has come up with the idea of porting the classic 1993 PC game to a camera. Earlier this year, I reported on footage of the game purportedly running on a Nikon Zf, but there was some doubt as to whether or not it was possible to run the game on Nikon’s locked software, presenting the possibility that the video could be camera trickery.

Later in the year, Digital Camera World reported on the very real possibility of playing the legendary first-person shooter on a Canon EOS 550D, via custom firmware called Magic Lantern.

But why do this in the first place, and why Doom? Well, the code for Doom is open source; it’s ancient in software terms, so it can run on almost anything with a computer in it, and it’s one of the most famous video games of all time. As such, there’s a bit of an internet subculture of getting Doom to run on anything and everything. And I mean anything: from calculators to pregnancy tests.
