Godox has just extended its tentacles even further into the wider realm of photographic accessories, challenging the best portable printers from Canon, Instax, Polaroid and Kodak.
The Godox P100 Portable Color Photo Printer offers portable, even pocketable, credit card-sized printing. However, unlike many affordable pocket printers that use underwhelming Zink technology, the P100 employs high-end dye-sublimation printing.
The dye-sub process delivers rich colors and deep blacks that are near-photographic print quality, with a laminated top layer to protect the image from handling.
It produces 86 x 53mm prints (on 97 x 53mm paper) at 300dpi, with 1,256 printhead heating elements able to render 16.7 million colors. These specs put it in competition with the likes of the Canon Selphy QX20 and Polaroid Hi-Print 2x3, both of which are actually slightly lower in resolution.
However, Godox doesn't state how fast the P100 prints – only that it delivers "quick printing, fast results" – so it will be interesting to see how it compares to the Selphy's 40-second prints and the Hi-Print's 60-second offerings.
The P100 pairs with the Godox app, available for iOS and Android, which offers features like ID photos, filters, frames, stickers and collages. The device also works via Bluetooth and even supports NFC for quick connection.
At just 142.5 x 86.8 z 26.8mm and 320g, it's the perfect size for throwing in a shoulder bag or leaving on the table at parties and events. And I personally think it's a much prettier little printer than its rivals.
Much as I love my Selphy, it's a pretty generic-looking box, while the Polaroid and Kodak options are downright unsightly. But the P100 has a soft, soapbar-like shape more along the lines of the Mini Links than its angular, garish competitors.
The Godox P100 doesn't appear to be widely available outside China yet, where it launched at ¥699 (approximately $104 / £76 / AU$144), but is already listed at Amazon US priced $119 with a 10-sheet paper / ink cartridge or for $138 with an extra 20-sheet cartridge. Additional Godox CP220 20-sheet cartridges sell for $19.
