The Samsung Galaxy S22 likely won't be appearing until early 2022, but that doesn't stop the rumor mill from chugging along. Interestingly, two separate rumors regarding this upcoming family of camera phones claim that two of the four handsets will be smaller than the previous Samsung Galaxy S21 generation.
One rumor suggests that the base Samsung Galaxy S22 model will feature a 6.06" display, compared with the Samsung Galaxy S21's 6.2" screen. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus will have a 6.55" display, as opposed to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus' 6.7" screen.

As reported by GSMArena, a second rumor seemingly backs up the first (opens in new tab), stating that the Galaxy S22 will have a 6.1" screen, while the Galaxy S22 Plus will have a 6.5-6.6" screen. While the specific numbers might be slightly different, this definitely suggests that there's some truth to the idea that two of the Galaxy S22 handsets will be shrinking down.
Meanwhile, the size of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will seemingly remain untouched, maintaining its 6.81" display. However, both rumors also suggest that the S22 Ultra will be the only handset out of the S22 family to offer an LTPO OLED screen.
An LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) display enables camera phone manufacturers to have a high refresh rate and a high resolution in their displays without having to deal with the high amount of energy that this usually demands from the phone's battery. As explained by (opens in new tab) Tom's Guide, this screen technology allows for a display to change its refresh rate without needing any additional hardware components to sit between a device’s graphics processing unit and the display controller.
It's not clear why Samsung has seemingly decided to reduce the size of two of the Galaxy S22 handsets. However, we're sure that we'll see more leaks and rumors appear over the rest of 2021 as we near the Galaxy S22 family's release date.
