Xiaomi has officially launched its first folding camera phone, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold. This folding phone features a full roster of exciting features, including the first liquid lens seen on a camera phone. This lens technology is designed to incorporate the ability to use multiple focal lengths in one singular lens.
This means that users will be able to go from a wide angle to a telephoto using a single camera. This liquid lens technology uses the principle of human eye bionics, featuring a lens-like structure with a transparent fluid wrapped in film.

According to a blog post by Xiaomi, "The radius of curvature of the spherical surface can be accurately changed thanks to a high-precision motor based on Xiaomi’s self-developed technology, which allows for 3X optical zoom, up to 30X telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of 3cm. One lens virtually covers functions of two lenses. You can shoot micro-details up close, and gaze at magnificent rivers and mountains from a distance."
In addition to the liquid lens camera, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold will also feature a 108MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide camera. The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold will also debut the Surge C1 processor, which is a professional image processing chip developed by Xiaomi itself. This chip is designed to provide high performance while occupying low CPU and storage space.

However, the innovative camera additions aren't the only interesting aspect of the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold. This handset also features a large 8.01" WQHD+ resolution flexible internal display and a 6.52" external display. This means that the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold features the largest foldable display on any camera phone to date.
According to Xiaomi, the Mi Mix Fold's U-shaped hinge design underwent 200,000 bends in reliability testing and up to 1 million bends in extreme reliability testing. Apparently, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold's hinge is also 27% lighter compared with other folding phones.
Other exciting specs for the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold include a 5,020mAh battery that can charge to 100% in 37 minutes with the 67W fast charging, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset and a butterfly-type cooling system to dissipate heat.
Pricing for the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold will begin at 9,999 yuan (around $1,520 / £1,100 / AU$2,000). Pre-orders for the phone opened on 30 March, with shipping beginning from 16 April. At the moment, there has been no official word on whether the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold will be sold outside of China.
