Designed for those who want to slim down their collection of gadgets and cables, the Sony MRW-S3 is a new UHS-II SD/microSD card reader and USB Hub.
Whether you’re handling high-resolution RAW files or UHD 4K video, the Sony MRW-S3 is equipped with the speed to handle it. It supports USB 3.1 Gen 2, which allows for data transfer speeds of up to 1000MB/s, and it can also receive up to 100W USB Power Delivery, ensuring a stable connection with USB devices. There are also USB power level indicators at each port which show whether the ports are ready to be connected at maximum power supply levels.
The MRW-S3 also has an HDMI output with 4K 30fps capabilities, allowing it to be easily and directly hooked up to an external monitor. It is also constructed of solid aluminium, and features a grip for better handling. Despite this, it weighs an impressively slender 95g, making it easy to take on your travels. This, combined with the potential the MRW-S3 has to slim down the number of cables and readers you need, makes it a potentially compelling addition to any photo or video kit bag.
As well as the MRW-S3, Sony also launched some additions to its TOUGH SD card range in the form of the TOUGH SF-M series. These new cards provide data transfer speeds of up to 277MB/s read speed and 150MB/s write speed, and are available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities. Sony says the new cards will pair well with the MRW-S3 for fast backups and image/video transfers, though of course, they would say that.
The Sony MRW-S3 and the TOUGH SF-3 cards are all expected to be available in Autumn 2019, with exact pricing yet to be confirmed.
