Canon PowerShot SX740 HS: New model offers 40x optical zoom and 4K video

Superzoom compact to arrive next month

Canon has refreshed its PowerShot compact line with a new superzoom camera, the PowerShot SX740 HS.

The PowerShot SX740 HS is billed as one of the most compact travel zoom cameras to offer a 40x optical zoom. This stretches across a focal range equivalent to 24-960mm in 35mm terms, with a maximum aperture of f/3.3-6.9.

Driven by a DIGIC 8 processing engine, the camera has a 20.3MP back-illuminated sensor at its heart and can fire images at a maximum rate of 10fps. With continuous focus enabled, this rate drops to a still-respectable 7.4fps, though, slightly disappointingly, the camera's sensitivity range only stretches between ISO 100 and 3200, and Raw shooting is not possible.

On the back, a 3in LCD screen with a 922k-dot resolution flips up through a 180-degree angle to face the front, with a Self Portrait mode on hand to help users capture selfies.

The model also becomes the latest recipient of 4K UHD video recording, and this is supported by 5-axis image stabilisation to help keep footage stable. Time-lapse footage can also be captured at a 4K resolution and, as is now often the case on 4K-enabled cameras, 8MP stills can also be extracted from 4K recordings.

To further its appeal towards tech-conscious users, Canon has furnished the PowerShot SX740 HS with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and these technologies work with the Canon Camera Connect app that's available for both iOS and Android devices.

Canon PowerShot SX740 HS: price and release date

The PowerShot SX740 HS will be available in black and silver finishes, and will go on sale next month. Canon UK has priced the camera at £349.99, while a price of $399.99 has been set in the US.
