Why pro photographers love the Rotolight AEOS

One of Rotolight’s most popular LED lighting creations is the AEOS. Blending power and versatility, it's the ideal tool for on-location portrait lighting and a whole lot more.

Put simply, the Rotolight AEOS is a bi-colour, location LED light with an ultra-thin design – weighing just 1.4kg and measuring just 1in thick, it’s one of the most portable lights on the market. This makes it perfect for location shooting and working on the go, whether you’re working in stills, video or both.

Entirely British-made, the Rotolight AEOS combines power with efficiency. It delivers a light output of 5,750 lux at three feet, but is also able to run at maximum power for up to two hours on a single 95W battery, thanks to its low power consumption of 42W. This is more than double the industry standard.

The first location light to include integrated aluminium handles, the Rotolight AEOS allows the user to “work the light” at unique and unconventional angles and positions. Instead of a traditional yoke, the AEOS uses a professional level ball head, which allows for complete 360-degree rotation and 200 degrees of tilt when the AEOS is mounted to a light stand. Whether you’re shooting portraits, product images, videos or anything else, this is the kind of flexibility that promises to make your shoot so much easier.

Award-winning photographer and Sony Artisan of Imagery Jason Lanier has already spent some time using the Rotolight AEOS on a portrait shoot. His impressions?

“The Rotolight AEOS really is the ultimate light for location and portrait photographers who want something powerful, yet portable and easy to carry, with a beautiful soft light output. AEOS will simply enable you to get shots no one else can,” he says.

You can see Jason in action with the AEOS in the shoot video here, and we’ve also managed to get a sneak peek at some of the images he produced. All were shot using the AEOS, a 7ft parabolic umbrella with a diffusion panel and scrim jim. Let’s take a closer look…

The AEOS is positioned above the model, who is crouching on the floor using the scrim jim to reflect light as a fill. Jason is shooting from above, positioned slightly up the slope from her – even though the AEOS is able to deliver 5750 lux at three feet, Jason only had the light at 45% for all of these shots and was able to light the model’s entire body  with its 50-degree beam angle.

For these two images, Jason uses just the AEOS at 45% and umbrella without the scrim jim, lighting the model from above. The soft light of the AEOS meant that no harsh shadows were cast on the wall by the model or ladder.

Model positioned partway up a ladder with the AEOS positioned slightly above her but pointed down at her face. This time Jason removed the diffusion panel from the umbrella and took away the scrim jim, using just the AEOS on 45% inside of the umbrella. The soft output of the AEOS was able to provide flattering results even without a diffusion panel, and creates a natural-looking round catchlight in the model’s eyes.

Want to shoot images like these on location? The AEOS makes it simple and straightforward. With dual controls for brightness and a highly accurate colour temperature display, the AEOS gives you the kind of feedback and responsiveness necessary for getting your shots in a timely, efficient manner.

Other features packed into the AEOS include AccuColour™ LED phosphor technology that delivers accurate colour rendering (CRI:96+), with a Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI) score of 91. There’s also True Aperture Dimming™ to automatically calculate aperture setting for a subject at a given distance, and also on board is High Speed Sync (HSS) flash that is colour temperature-adjustable, providing 250% of the maximum continuous light output that works out to an extra stop of power. If you’re a hybrid photo and video shooter, you’ll find the Rotolight AEOS is the tool you’ll use across disciplines.

Whether you’re a working professional photographer or a passionate amateur, we’re positive the Rotolight AEOS will find a place in your kit bag. If you'd like a chance to try it out for yourself, Jason Lanier will be holding a lighting masterclass on May 8th at Pinewood Studios. Sign up here, but don't delay as spaces are limited!
