Panasonic Lumix's innovative approach helped push the entire camera market forward – now, the brand is celebrating its 25th birthday.
In 2001, Lumix entered the camera market with compact cameras. While many think Sony was the first to modernize traditional DSLR technology, it was actually Panasonic Lumix that led the way. In 2018, the brand released the iconic G1, the first-ever mirrorless camera...
...and there's much more to discover about this manufacturer, which just recently made headlines with a breakthrough record share of Europe's full-frame market.
Panasonic Lumix first camera: DMC-LC5
In 2001, Panasonic Lumix launched the DMC-LC5 and DMC-F7 – stepping into the ten-booming compact camera market.
Five years later, Lumix addressed a key gap photographers had been asking for: a long zoom lens in a compact body.
The result was the TZ (Tavel Zoom) series, the world's first compact cameras to combine long zoom with optical image stabilization. The breakthrough model, DMC-TZ1, pioneered with a 10x Leica zoom (35-350mm equivalent)!
Today, the TZ series remains a staple for travel and hybrid photography. The TZ99/ ZS99, for example, is a popular choice, boosting a huge 30x optical zoom range (24-720mm equivalent) with a Leica 4.3-129mm zoom – available for only $679.99 / £519.

Panasonic Lumix G1: The world's first mirrorless
In 2008, Panasonic shook up the market with the Lumix G1, the first-ever mirrorless camera using a Micro Four Thirds sensor. Suddenly, photographers no longer needed mirrors to capture images.
This camera set the pace... The innovation eventually led Panasonic into the full-frame mirrorless arena in 2019, with the S1 and S1R, as part of the L-mount alliance.
The Lumix G1 is just one of Panasonic's world-first releases. To explore more industry-changing cameras, dive into the article 13 world-first cameras from Panasonic, from the first ever mirrorless camera to the world's fastest autofocus.
What's next for Panasonic Lumix?
Panasonic Lumix has just unveiled the latest addition to its popular TZ series, the TZ300/ ZS300 – featuring a Leica 15x zoom lens (24-260mm equivalent), and 20.1MP 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor.
But what else is coming in 2026? Panasonic USA's Sean Robinson shared insights in an interview with Lumix creator and 4x3films founder Matthew Dangyou.
While nothing is confirmed, the interview hints at a possible successor to the S1H cine camera, a potential refresh of the LX100 II premium compact camera, and even the chance of a GM5-style compact Micro Four Thirds camera...
