Low-fi keychain cameras have become a viral trend – and Yashica has just introduced four more versions of its collectible tiny camera. The Yashica Funtastic keychain camera, a 1MP keychain camera with a flip screen, just gained four new designs for the collectible camera that Yashica wants to customize to your mood and personality.
The new Yashica Funtastic designs contain the same guts as the keychain camera announced earlier this year. The 1/4 inch sensor and 1MP images are designed for early digicam nostalgia rather than image quality, while the different designs and a $28 / £21 price point hint at a collectible series.
Those designs now number eight, as Yashica has launched four new designs in addition to the originals. While the original launch had a model with the Yashica Boy mascot from the 1960s, that mascot is now joined by the Sailor Boy Edition, mixing that retro mascot with a design that looks inspired by historic Japanese artwork.
The new looks also include a basketball-themed Snoopy and two Helly Kitty designs – one with polka dots and another with cherries.
The new designs come in the same 22g, keychain-ready camera that measures 6.3 × 2.2 × 2.5 cm. Despite the size, Yashica managed to fit in a screen that flips 180 degrees for selfies and an LED light.
Yashica also launched what it calls Funtastic World, which divides up the keychain camera series into four different personalities and moods, sorting the different designs into those built for Wanderers, Dreamers, Sparks, and Blush.
“The things we choose to carry often say something about us,” Yashica wrote. “From the bags we wear to the accessories we attach to them, everyday objects can become reflections of our interests, style, memories, and personality. With Funtastic, Yashica extends that idea to photography, creating cameras that people can connect with not only for what they do, but also for what they represent.”
Driven by the success of the Kodak Charmera, keychain cameras have become a viral sensation, going even smaller than the compact camera trend while also touching on the low-fi trend. Yashica’s take includes a flip screen, though it lacks the tiny viewfinder of Kodak’s branded keychain.
Like the Kodak Charmera, Yashica’s keychain cameras are made by licensees and not the original company behind the historic cameras.
Yashica has opened pre-orders for the new Funtastic designs directly from the company’s website. The keychain camera retails for about $29 / £21 / AU$40 / CA$40.
