When London, England-based documentary and street photographer Chris Mozyro was walking through Westminster, one scene immediately caught his attention: a group of young submariners connecting just hours after taking part in a solemn remembrance ceremony.
The contrast between duty and friendship inspired Mozyro's From Salute to Cheers, a photograph that has won First Place in the Black and White category at the Pure Street Photography Awards 2026.
The latest accolade marks the image's fourth major international award, following First Place, Black & White Photo of the Year at the MonoVisions Awards, First Place at the ND Awards, and a Silver Prize in the Street Photography category at the Exposure One Awards.
This time the image stood out among 1,582 entries, with judges praising its authentic storytelling, natural composition and emotional depth.
Known for his unobtrusive documentary style, Mozyro captures genuine moments of human connection, an approach that has earned him an impressive collection of international photography awards.
First Place: 'From Salute to Cheers'
"Seeing the young submariners together in such a relaxed, unguarded moment drew me in," Mozyro explains.
"It was as though the weight of their morning obligations had been lifted, replaced by the simple joy of friendship and shared experience.
"This image captures something deeply human – the need for connection after moments of reflection and duty.
"Just hours earlier, these young submariners had marched with solemnity and precision, paying tribute to those who had gone before them.
"The shift from ceremony to celebration was palpable. The removal of formalities gave way to authentic, unguarded moments of laughter, storytelling and shared reflection.
"The clinking of pints, the warmth of friendship and the glow of pride in service filled the air."
Jury's comment
"This is a great example what street photography should be, in spite of so many ways to obtain a street photograph," says Rui Palha, internationally acclaimed street shooter.
"Not posed, at all, the location of the subjects is perfect, the black and white is excellent, as well as the lighting measurement.
"My sincere congratulations. Long live street photography."
