Canon applies for patent for a new Canon RF macro lens – perfect for macro photographers!

As the photography industry gears up for the release of the game-changer Canon EOS R5, it's clear that Canon are still busy beavering away behind the scenes to provide a cohesive RF mount experience. The fact is, it doesn't matter how incredible a camera might be – if the system doesn't have the lens you need, then it's just not going to work out.

At the moment, the only Canon RF macro lens in the RF line-up is the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM, a fairly entry-level piece of glass that won't quite cut the mustard for many macro photographers.

Traditionally, most macro lenses hover somewhere around the 100mm focal length mark, as this telephoto focal length both helps you get closer to your subject and provides a beautiful isolating effect. Luckily, this is exactly where Canon seems to have aimed their efforts for a brand new Canon RF macro lens.

Rumor website Canon News has uncovered (opens in new tab) a Japan Patent Application (opens in new tab) for a Canon RF macro lens with a series of embodiments all around the 100mm focal length. These include a: Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 Macro, Canon RF 110mm f/2.8 Macro, Canon RF 90mm f/2.8 Macro and a Canon RF 120mm f/2.8 Macro.

It's not clear which of these embodiments will actually make it to market, but it's definitely heartening to know that Canon are working on filling the conspicuous macro lens-sized gap in their RF lens line-up.
