"Quality, color and reliability" – How this Scandinavian company has shaped the future of photography
Capture One CEO Rafael Orta explains how Denmark’s history of color reproduction, precision engineering and imaging expertise helped create a company whose influence reaches far beyond its size
When people think of the world's most influential photography companies, the conversation often turns to Japan, Germany or the United States.
But Scandinavia has quietly built a remarkable legacy in imaging – from camera systems and lighting technology to professional software and color science.
For Capture One CEO, Rafael Orta, this connection is not accidental. He believes the region's influence comes from decades of expertise in precision, quality and the ability to reproduce images with exceptional accuracy.
"It's truly fascinating to see how some of the names that stand for quality in terms of the image and colors, but also the stability and the reliability and quality in engineering, have come from the Scandinavian region," says Orta.
The Scandinavian color connection
Capture One's roots are closely tied to Denmark, a country with a long history of expertise in visual reproduction.
Orta explains that the foundations can be traced back to the region’s printing industries, where accuracy and consistency in color were essential.
"You can trace this all the way back to many decades ago, the emergence of incredibly high-quality print industries, especially in Denmark," he says.

That knowledge of representing colors accurately did not disappear as photography moved from analog to digital. Instead, it evolved into new approaches to scanning, processing and managing digital images.
"Then that eventually evolved into how to scan and how to represent colors digitally," Orta explains.
This transition helped create an environment where companies focused on imaging technology could develop highly specialized expertise.
From print to digital photography
Capture One is part of a wider Scandinavian imaging tradition that includes companies such as Hasselblad and Profoto, which have become recognized globally for professional photography tools.
For Orta, the common thread is not just technology but a shared approach to quality.
"There are these incredibly specialized companies in photography and in imaging more broadly across Scandinavian countries," he says.
Those companies have built reputations around reliability, engineering and a deep understanding of how photographers use their tools.
Capture One's own focus has been on giving photographers control over their images, particularly in demanding professional environments where color consistency matters.
Whether it is commercial photography, fashion, advertising or increasingly photojournalism, Orta says the company’s role is to support the creative process.
"We're at the service of photographers," he says. "We're at the service of the craft."
A small region with global influence
Denmark-based Capture One has become one of the photography industry's most influential software companies. Headquartered in Frederiksberg (part of Copenhagen), the company has a team of around 122 employees, with additional offices in Greece, England and the United States.
"It's never lost on us that we're this very, very specialized, very focused company from Denmark," says Orta.
"But it's never lost on us that the impact that we have on global photography – especially the more commercially and culturally influential photography – vastly outsize the fact that we're this specialized company based in Denmark."
From advertising campaigns and fashion editorials to photojournalism and commercial productions, Capture One's software plays a role in images seen around the world.
"We're incredibly proud of the scale of the impact that we have on the industry, and in general on society and culture and commerce," Orta says.
As photography continues to evolve through new technologies, artificial intelligence and changing creative workflows, Capture One's Scandinavian roots remain grounded in the principles that have shaped the company from the beginning: precision, color accuracy and reliability.
For Orta, those values – "quality, color and reliability" – remain as relevant today as they were decades ago, and continue to guide how Capture One develops tools for professional photographers.
