From phones to glasses to keychains, it seems like there’s nothing the consumer tech industry won’t stick on the end of a camera. And now, Dyson, the English tech company famed for its household appliances, has launched a toothbrush with a built-in camera. The Dyson CameraJet uses what it calls Gap Optical Targeting to shoot jets of liquid between hard-to-reach gaps in teeth.
It does this by using a 100,000-pixel camera with a tiny macro lens to capture and analyze 28 images per second. Combining this with AI algorithms that are said to detect, track and predict gaps, as well as a 257Hz stroboscopic light to illuminate the mouth, allows it to precisely target jets of liquid and ‘floss’ the user’s teeth.
According to Dyson, the camera’s ability to target gaps is what sets the CameraJet apart from the competition. It took six years of research and development to come to fruition and is priced at an eye-watering $499.99 / £419.99 / AU$799.

It’s not the first time a company has attempted to merge toothbrushes with cameras. Onvi announced the Prophix Video Toothbrush back in 2016, which was intended to stream footage from inside the mouth to the user’s phone so they could make sure they were reaching the right spots, but it never actually hit shelves.
It’ll be interesting to see how Dyson’s camera-infused toothbrush fares on the market. Premium toothbrushes are nothing new and Oral-B’s range-topping iO brushes aren’t priced too dissimilarly to the CameraJet. So there you have it, what’s next? A camera with a built-in toothbrush?
