It doesn’t matter whether you’re a busy professional photographer or a keen amateur; the best backdrops for photography are absolutely essential if you want to capture top-quality photos. This is because whatever is behind your subject can have a huge impact on how your shots look, whether you’re shooting portraits, products, or still lifes.

As a working professional photographer, I rely on different backdrops depending on who, what, or where I’m shooting, be it in my home studio, a family’s lounge, or a client’s office for headshots. There are myriad colors, sizes, and designs, paper rolls and fabric materials, or collapsible backdrops that are quick to pop up, even in small spaces, to add color or complement the people and products I’m photographing.

A good backdrop will enable you to quickly create a clean or artistic background to shoot your subject against for better results than a plain wall or a distracting interior or exterior scene.

Best all-around seamless backdrop

Colorama Paper Background 1.35m x 11m

The classic paper roll is a popular choice and creates a seamless, high-quality backdrop

Specifications

Sizes: 2.72m and 1.35m width x 11m length
Colors: Too many choices to list!
Material: Paper

Reasons to buy

+
If this backdrop gets dirty, just chop the end off!
+
Non-reflective matte surface
+
Different widths to suit your needs
+
Loads of color options
+
Seamless infinity curves

Reasons to avoid

-
Beginners may find rolls tricky to put up and down without help
-
Easy to damage with water or dirty feet
-
More colors available in 2.72m size

Colorama paper backdrops are popular with photographers for good reason. They’re affordable, lightweight, easy to roll out and store in a corner, and you can quickly create a clean, plain color background and – with one or two studio lights – instantly capture professional-looking photos.

Colorama paper has a non‑reflective matte finish for consistent results under studio lighting. And if it gets dirty, ripped, or damaged after a shoot, you simply cut that bit off (in a straight line with a sharp blade or a big pair of scissors) and unroll a new clean piece for your next photos.

When rolled up, paper backdrops are very portable and easy to store at home (Image credit: Peter Travers)

Here, I’m using Arctic white (a plain white backdrop is popular with clients and a great choice for amateurs starting out), but I also regularly use gray, black, vibrant blue, and softer green, depending on what I’m shooting and my lighting. Colorama makes loads of colors to choose from.

Standard full-size Colorama backdrops are 2.72 meters wide, which is ideal for large studio spaces and if you have, say, a family of four to photograph. However, I favor these smaller 1.35-meter-wide backdrops as they are more practical and portable. Both width paper rolls are 11m long, so there's plenty of paper to last for dozens of shoots.

Paper backdrops are simply rolled around large cardboard tubes (Image credit: Peter Travers)

This 1.35m size is my go-to for headshots, as it’s wide enough to take a half-length portrait (in horizontal format), 3/4-length portraits, or even full-length shots of people on a stool (in vertical format).

Plus, crucially, in smaller indoor spaces, it leaves space to set up two lights with softboxes on either side of the backdrop. It’s also small enough to fit in the trunk or back seat of a car.

With the paper roll hung on the pole, you pull down smoothly to create your backdrop (Image credit: Peter Travers)

Paper backdrops are easy to set up and roll back after use. There’s a knack to hanging backdrop rolls and unrolling the paper without creasing it for a smooth finish, which you’ll learn as you go.

What paper backdrops offer that material or collapsible backdrops can’t is the essential ‘infinity curve’: a seamless backdrop from floor to ceiling for a continuous appearance behind subjects.

Remember to clamp the backdrop roll to the pole to keep it secure (Image credit: Peter Travers)

I regularly use white, gray, and black backdrops in my desktop studio setup when photographing products for clients, with an infinity curve from the desktop to behind the product for a clean and even backdrop.

You’ll need to buy a pair of stands and an extendable pole to hang the backdrop, along with a couple of clamps to lock the paper roll to the pole, to ensure it doesn’t unravel in a big heap! Also, remember to store paper rolls upright; otherwise, backdrops can get squashed if kept on their sides, resulting in kinks in the paper.

Best backdrop for chroma key

Neewer Polyester Backdrop

The best polyester background for chroma key green/blue screen shooting can be folded down as small as a bed sheet

Specifications

Sizes: 1.8x2.8m, 3x3.6m, 3x6m
Colors: White, green, blue, gray, black
Material: 100% pure polyester

Reasons to buy

+
Add scenes digitally with green and blue chroma key
+
Machine washable
+
Highly portable when folded down

Reasons to avoid

-
Takes time to steam or iron out creases before use
-
Can flap about with slightest breeze
-
Requires multiple clamps

When it comes to portable backgrounds, those made of fabric like Neewer’s polyester backdrops are very lightweight and fold flat like a duvet cover. They are made from 100% pure polyester, yet feel soft to the touch, like a muslin fabric on the front.

It is available in three sizes: 1.8 x 2.8m, 3 x 3.6m, 3 x 6m. I’ve tested the 1.8 x 2.8m size as it’s best suited to small studio space and is the most portable. It’s also big enough for shots of two people standing. This size folds flat to 38 x 28 cm to slip inside the plastic zip-lock bag it comes in.

The Neewer backdrops come in five colors: white, green, blue, gray, and black. I’ve used the blue chroma key here. All backdrops provide a non-reflective surface for even lighting.

The big benefit of ‘chroma key’ (aka 'green screen' or 'blue screen') is that it enables you to add in any scene digitally you choose afterwards. This makes Neewer’s polyester backdrops suitable for adding special effects at home or in the studio, as well as for video production.

This is what the polyester backdrop looks like out of the bag - lots of creases to deal with first! (Image credit: Peter Travers)

The downside of using fabric backdrops is that they arrive full of creases and wrinkles as they’ve been folded. This means you need to allow time to prepare them; ideally, you need to hang backdrops for 24 hours before first use to reduce wrinkles. I also sprayed the front with hot water, then ironed the back side to get the creases out. Neewer suggests you use a steam iron, not a dry iron, below 105ºF / 40ºC.

Neewer polyester muslin backdrops blue green white

For a crease-free backdrop, first you need to spray it with warm water (Image credit: Peter Travers)

The creases came out pretty easily once sprayed and ironed, but it's a faff and time-consuming (I rarely even iron my clothes!), but once done, it’s all good. Unless you have to fold it up and store the backdrop, as you’ll need to iron it again...

Neewer polyester muslin backdrops blue green white

Then get the iron and ironing board out and get to work! (Image credit: Peter Travers)

The polyester backdrop has a pole pocket along the top edge, so you can hang the backdrop on a standard pole supported by stands; you’ll also need 4-6 clamps to get the material taut and free from creases (pole, stands, and clamps not supplied). Alternatively, you could hang it from a curtain rail at home.

Even when fixed in place on a pole and with clamps, the lightweight material can blow around – even just walking past can make it move. This isn't a huge issue, unless your subjects are energetic when posing.

Once set up properly, the Neewer Polyester backdrops are very effective and provide a professional-looking and smooth background behind portrait subjects.

Kate Backdrop Collapsible Backdrop

Double-sided collapsible backdrop panel for instant pop-up backdrops on location

Specifications

Size: 1.5x1.2m
Colors: Dual-color textures
Materials: Alloy frame / 'magic' material composite

Reasons to buy

+
Quick to set up and light to carry when collapsed
+
Microfiber material known for its wrinkle-resistant properties
+
Double-sided with two different colors for two different looks

Reasons to avoid

-
Only big enough for 3/4 length shots, and better suited to headshots.
-
Color choices and patterns might not be to everyone's taste

These collapsible backdrops are one of my favorites for portraits, as they instantly pop up into a smooth, colorful backdrop that adds impact to your shots.

When collapsed, the Kate Abstract Texture Collapsible Backdrop for Photography 1.5 x 2m size fits neatly into the supplied 70cm diameter circular bag. A high-quality spring-loaded alloy frame ensures the ‘special memory material’ is taut and wrinkle-free once you’ve unfolded and popped up the backdrop.

Brilliantly quick and simple, you have an instant textured backdrop for more professional or gritty portraits, still life, or product shots.

I still have some old Lastolite (now Manfrotto) collapsible backdrops in my studio with fake faded wooden doors, but the backdrop styles and colors seem muted and outdated compared to the new vibrant and modern choices available from Kate Backdrops.

Be careful when unfolding the collapsible backdrops are they're spring loaded and will snap back into shape with some force! (Image credit: Peter Travers)

Kate Backdrop offers a wide choice of great colors. Many have a natural vignette, so they are a bit lighter in color in the center and behind subjects, fading to darker around the edges to complement your portraits.

They’re also double-sided, so you get two different colored backdrops for the price of one.

Kate Basckdrop's Texture Microfiber Collapsible Backdrops are easy to pop up to their full 5x6.5ft (1.5x2m) size, and their lightweight design makes them easy to put in position for photos (Image credit: Peter Travers)

Being able to pop up these backdrops anywhere in a matter of seconds is the big bonus. As long as you have a wall (or a couple of chairs, or whatever) to lean it against, you’re good to go, whether indoors or outdoors.

Built-in hoops also enable you to hang these collapsible backdrops from a pole on backdrop stands, or attach them to a Kate Backdrop Display Stand (available separately) for added stability.

Putting them away requires a certain technique and a bit of strength, but if you’ve ever folded away a large reflector, it’s the same method, so not so difficult when you’ve got the knack. Once you have it, there's a certain satisfaction in being able to fold these framed collapsible backdrops.

Building a decorative set for family photos at Christmas, anniversaries, or other special times can be costly and time-consuming, which is where these Kate Backdrops offer a fast solution at a great price.

These high-quality microfiber backdrops have ornate indoor and outdoor scenes printed on them to provide you with an instant Christmas, Fall, and other seasonal favourites to add color and charm to your family portraits.

BEST BACKDROP FOR INSTANT SEASONAL SCENES FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS

Kate Backdrops are super portable as they fold into small plastic carry bags (Image credit: Peter Travers)

Although they’re supplied folded into a small 38 x 28cm zip-lock plastic bag, the soft fabric doesn’t suffer as much from wrinkles and creases as some polyester sheet backdrops. This meant I could hang it up for a couple of hours to deal with most of the wrinkles. I only needed to spray a few bigger creases with warm water, then lightly use a cool iron while the backdrop was hanging in place to get it ready.

BEST BACKDROP FOR INSTANT SEASONAL SCENES FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS

You can hang these backdrops on your own pole and backdrop stands, or buy the Kate Backdrop Display Stand as pictured here (Image credit: Peter Travers)

I tested the more portable 6.5 x 6.5ft (2 x 2m), which is ideal for children, headshots, and pets, and it fitted neatly into my home studio space. Multiple other sizes are available, including up to a huge 12 x 8ft (3.6 x 2.4m) backdrop, which is better if you are looking to photograph larger family groups and standing adults, as long as you have the space to set up.

Kate Telescopic Photography Backdrop Frame – Adjustable Display Stand

You can buy these Kate Backdrops with the Kate Telescopic Photography Backdrop Frame – Adjustable Display Stand (Image credit: Peter Travers)

A pocket along the top edge (and bottom edge on bigger backdrops) is used to slide in a pole to hang from backdrop stands (not supplied). But Kate’s microfiber scenic backdrops are best paired with the Kate Telescopic Equipment Adjustable Photography Backdrop Display Stand, which I used and found very effective, as it's designed to hang backdrops of different sizes, while its feet take up less floor space than my usual backdrop stands.

You’ll also need to use backdrop clamps or clips (sold separately) on a Kate Backdrop so the material is tight and wrinkle-free, to help the scene look seamless and more realistic.

BEST BACKDROP FOR INSTANT SEASONAL SCENES FOR FAMILY PORTRAITS

With the Kate Backdrop hung up on a stand, you'll need between 4-6 clamps to get the material tight and to reduce any wrinkles that may otherwise highlight that it's a fake scene (Image credit: Peter Travers)

You'll need to employ some photographic techniques and a few tricks to get the best results, but once you get it right, the backdrops are surprisingly effective and realistic.

You need to match your light source to illuminate subjects from the same direction as in the image on the backdrop, such as a side light with your studio flash or sunlight from the same angle as an outdoor scene. Underexpose the backdrop so that it's not too dominant or obviously fake.

Position subjects about two to three meters in front of backdrops and use a long focal length and a wide aperture for shallow depth of field to blur the background. It's also worthwhile adding props in the foreground, such as Christmas presents, to add depth.

To ensure that you can’t see the join between the backdrop and the real floor, which would give the game away, sit on the floor and shoot from a low position to crop out most of the legs for tighter and cleaner compositions. For full-length shots, you can pair the backdrop with a Kate Rustic Wood Plank Floor Backdrop sheet for a matching fake floor. Or choose a Kate Backdrop with similar wooden flooring as in a room in your home.

Best collapsible backdrop for product photography

Neewer Photo Studio Light Cube

This pop-up portable lighting tent is ideal for photographing small objects on a table

Specifications

Size: 60 x 60cm / 24 x 24in
Color: White, with blue, red, and black inserts
Material: Translucent nylon

Reasons to buy

+
Creates soft, wraparound lighting for product shots
+
Very compact and portable
+
Quick to pop into shape and easy to set up and shoot
+
Works surprisingly well with daylight, but best with studio lights

Reasons to avoid

-
Nylon material is prone to wrinkles on initial setup
-
Supplied 'backdrop' sheets are a bit cheap and cheerful
-
Suited mostly to square images of larger products and objects
-
Tricky to fold and collapse back into the carrying bag

If you’re after a collapsible solution for better product or still-life photos to reduce harsh light and shadows, look no further than the Neewer Photo Studio Light Tent, which acts as a softbox cube to encase smaller items for soft, even lighting, and comes complete with a bunch of colored backdrops.

The softbox cube is supplied neatly inside a 31cm diameter carry bag. Unfold it slowly, as the elastic steel wire support is quick to snap into its full-size cube of 60 x 60cm / 24 x 24in.

Good luck folding it back down into a circular shape to fit back into its little bag, though – I consider myself expert level when it comes to collapsing wire-framed, spring-loaded backdrops and reflectors, and I struggled to do it!

Neewer Photo Studio Light Cube Diffusion Soft Box Kit 60x60cm

This collapsible softbox cube comes in a portable carrying bag, plus a selection of colored backdrop sheets (Image credit: Peter Travers)

It’s made of translucent nylon that creates a soft light with minimal shadows and can also help reduce reflections. The translucent material is more see-through and not as effective as the material on higher-quality softboxes.

However, as basic as it is, the Neewer cube tent works perfectly well with only daylight or artificial room light, although product photos can look very flat and one-dimensional.

I found it worked best when using a couple of studio lights. I used two softboxes on either side for even lighting, although you could use flashguns without softboxes, or even a pair of cheap Anglepoise lamps would do, as the Neewer tent acts as a big softbox itself.

Neewer Photo Studio Light Cube Diffusion Soft Box Kit 60x60cm

As well as a standard white 'backdrop sheet', the cube tent softbox kit comes with blue, red, and black sheets, for different colored backgrounds (Image credit: Peter Travers)

The cube is supplied with small white, red, blue, and black ‘backdrop’ sheets to complement your product and still life photos. These small nylon sheets fix to the top of the rear of the cube, then drape down to create an infinity curve of sorts. But it’s hard to create a smooth curve, as our sheets were too small to attach to Velcro at the front. The sheets were still fairly effective when hanging down the back and lying flat on the floor of the cube.

The thin nylon material is prone to small creases in the sides of the cube (it's suggested you pop up the tent and leave it for a while before use to reduce creases), and the folds were very noticeable in the nylon ‘backdrop’ sheets. When using the white backdrop with studio lights illuminating the cube and exposing for the objects I was photographing, the creases weren’t noticeable in the images, as the surrounds were nearly pure white.

Neewer Photo Studio Light Cube Diffusion Soft Box Kit 60x60cm

The cube translucent tent has a large removable front opening to allow for easy access to put in products for studio quality images in your home or office (Image credit: Peter Travers)

It has a removable sheet you can attach to the front of the cube with Velcro fasteners, with an opening to poke your lens through to really minimize reflections on shiny objects.

This sounds like a good idea, but in reality, as your camera is so close and the lens is inside the cube, it is only effective if you’re photographing smaller items (around 15-20cm in width and height), as you'll need to zoom in to around 50-70mm to keep the cube edges out of the frame; otherwise, shooting so close with a wider focal length of 24-35mm, say, means items will appear distorted.

Neewer Photo Studio Light Cube Diffusion Soft Box Kit 60x60cm

Made from translucent, light-diffusing white nylon fabric, there's a detachable front door cover with a slit for your camera lens to poke through (Image credit: Peter Travers)

It’s a good choice for product photography, or if you want to make items you’re selling on Etsy or eBay look more attractive to buyers.

I used the Neewer Photo Studio Light Cube Diffusion Soft Box on my desktop studio setup, which is at a comfortable working height, but you can also put it on the floor, face the opening upwards, and shoot directly from above for flat-lay shots.

As the tent is a cube, it’s best suited to square images of larger objects, which isn’t often a problem for me, as most of my clients want square product shots for their websites and Instagram. The same goes for square images of items you’re posting on selling sites.

Features

★★★★☆

The 60x60cm cube is collapsable and can be folded completely in the included 31cm diameter carrying bag for easy transportation and storage.

Design

★★★★☆

The cube softbox can diffuse light sources, soften shadows and reduce glare. It provides a controlled lighting environment around the object and is most ideal for shooting small objects.

Performance

★★★★☆

It’s brilliant for shooting small products where you want a pure white background, and ideal for making clean cutouts of product images.

Value

★★★★☆

At this price, it's very good value and will appeal to enthusiasts with an Etsy/eBay obsession, and pros shooting products for clients.

Best collapsible backdrop for professionals

Manfrotto Plain Collapsible Reversible Backdrop 1.8x2.1m Black/White

Manfrotto Plain Collapsible Reversible Backdrop

High-quality, heavy-duty collapsible backdrop from Manfrotto made for professional photographers and serious amateurs

Specifications

Size: 1.8x2.1m
Colors: Black and white
Material: Polyester

Reasons to buy

+
Manfrotto’s reassuring build quality
+
Big enough for group portraits
+
Dual fabric layers for black or white backdrops
+
Works great on Magnetic Background Support (supplied separately)

Reasons to avoid

-
Big and heavy to move around
-
Comparatively expensive
-
Might be too tall for some ceilings indoors when used in vertical format

Manfrotto is a top brand that makes good, reliable, and high-quality photo gear for beginners to professionals. This is evident in this black/white collapsible backdrop, which is aimed more at the latter.

The 2.1 x 1.8 m black/white backdrop comes in a zipped 90cm diameter carry bag, making it portable and easy to carry from location to location. It's black on one side and white on the other, providing the two most popular color backdrops in a matter of seconds.

The backdrop is made from a thick double-sided polyester fabric, with separate sheets of white and black material on either side (rather than a single piece of material that’s simply colored white on one side, black on the other). This helps it absorb studio lights to create a smooth, even backdrop with no chance of unwanted light coming through from behind.

Once unfolded, it springs into action, and thanks to the thick metal frame, the backdrop material is crease-free straight out of the bag.

Manfrotto Plain Collapsible Reversible Backdrop 1.8x2.1m Black/White

Double layers of thick fabric provide a high-quality white or black backdrop for better portrait photos (Image credit: Peter Travers)

At 2.1 x 1.8 m (7 x 6ft) and made from thick, double-sided material, it weighs in at 4.3kg, so it is a big and pretty weighty backdrop. I’m six foot (182cm) tall and reasonably strong, and had my work cut out trying to move it around and handle it when at full size.

So lifting, hanging, or switching sides with this backdrop could be tricky if you’re shooting solo and you’re vertically challenged, especially when using it in portrait format, as you have the 2.1m height to contend with. This isn't a deal breaker at all (you can always ask whoever you’re photographing to help, if needed!), but it's something to be aware of.

Manfrotto Plain Collapsible Reversible Backdrop 1.8x2.1m Black/White

You can buy the Manfrotto Magnetic Background Support on its own, or with a stand if you don’t have one (Image credit: Peter Travers)

My backdrop was supplied with a Magnetic Background Support and stand (sold separately). This metal bar with magnetic ends attaches to the top of a stand, and the magnets are very effective and reassuringly strong, keeping the backdrop held firmly in place. Alternatively, there are straps to tie it to a pole on backdrop stands.

I’d say it’s definitely worth buying this Magnetic Background Support alongside the backdrop. As well as keeping the backdrop in place and level, it means you can hang it clear of the floor, and it's useful if you have tall subjects, like basketball players!

It’s worth taking a minute (I used a tape measure) to ensure this big backdrop hangs centrally on the magnetic support on the stand so the backdrop is level and not leaning to one side.

Manfrotto Plain Collapsible Reversible Backdrop 1.8x2.1m Black/White

Big is better, and this 2.1x1.8m backdrop fitted my home studio space perfectly! Although it can appear unwieldy to move around if you’re not the tallest (Image credit: Peter Travers)

While it’s tall enough for full-length portraits at 2.1m, as it rests on the floor and doesn’t extend along the floor like a paper backdrop, it’s best for 3/4 length portraits, cropping people off below the knees in your shots.

Alternatively, you can use it in landscape format, positioning the longer 2.1m side horizontally for group shots of several people, cropping off legs when framing within its 1.8m height.

Although it’s a big backdrop, it’s easy to collapse down and put back into its carry bag, adding to its portability. But at over $260 / £200, it’s not cheap, coming in at four or five times more expensive than some other brands’ equivalent (if smaller and not as good quality) black/white collapsible backdrops.

Manfrotto Plain Collapsible Reversible Backdrop 1.8x2.1m Black/White

As this larger backdrop is 2.1 x 1.8m, you can use it in landscape format and utilize the 2.1m as the width for group shots or if you need more space around subjects in a shot (Image credit: Peter Travers)

How to choose the best photography backdrop

There are many types of backdrops designed for different types of photographers and photography, whether you prefer to work in the studio or head out on location. There are options for white or plain solid colors, subtle textures, full-on fake scenes and patterns, and chroma key to add scenes digitally in post.

Some backdrops are freestanding, like the collapsible/pop-up options, meaning you can prop them up anywhere there's a reasonably flat surface. Others will require a dedicated stand, usually made of metal, which is sometimes included in the kit and sometimes not, so it's always worth double-checking before you buy.

Other backdrops are a little more versatile and can be hung on a standard curtain rail, which allows you to transform a room in your home into a DIY studio. This is useful when starting out if you don't yet have the budget for your own studio space.

Kate's Backdrops product shot

Pop-up collapsible or foldable material backdrops are a quick way to create more interesting backgrounds for portraits – even when shooting in a stark, white studio (Image credit: Kate's Backdrops)

Backdrops come in various materials, each with its own pros and cons. Fabric backgrounds, made from microfiber or polyester, are popular because they can be reused and transported from location to location. However, care must be taken to ensure they don't wrinkle or crease. More premium fabric backgrounds tend to be wrinkle-resistant.

Alternatively, you may want to consider a classic paper backdrop. There are tons of color options, and they are very adaptable, depending on how you direct your studio lights. Sometimes a simple plain backdrop is all you need!

These come in rolls, and generally you'll pull out the amount you need for each shoot, throwing away any dirty or torn sections when you're done. These tend to be cheap and convenient, with the downside that you'll need to buy another roll once you run out. Bear in mind that if you get a paper backdrop wrinkled, you won't be able to rescue it by ironing, as you can with a cloth backdrop.

How we test photography backdrops

Photography accessories, such as backdrops, are tested by professional portrait photographers. Our reviewers have a great deal of experience using similar products and know exactly what to look for, and what any weak points might be. We evalutate products not just individually, but in the wider context of the market, looking at how they compare to their key competitors.
