Canon celebrates World Photography Day by slashing up to £270 off its camera gear

Canon has kicked off its World Photography Day celebrations with a flash sale that could be well worth checking out if you’ve been waiting to upgrade your camera or add another lens to your kit bag.

Running from August 14 until midnight on August 23, Canon is offering savings of up to £270 across selected products, alongside some rather tempting discounts on its refurbished cameras and lenses.

The biggest saving I’ve spotted is on a rather impressive Canon EOS R8 bundle, which combines the full-frame mirrorless camera with the RF 85mm Macro IS STM and RF 24-50mm IS STM lenses. Usually £2,099.99, the complete kit has dropped to £1,829.99, saving you the full £270. Considering you’re getting a 24.2MP full-frame camera capable of shooting at up to 40fps and recording 4K/60p video, plus two lenses to get you started, there’s a lot of camera kit here for the money.

I think the sleeper deals in Canon’s World Photography Day sale could actually be hiding in its refurbished section. Selected refurbished cameras and lenses have effectively been cut by 15%, and there are some excellent examples available. A refurbished Canon EOS R, for instance, is now £764.15 instead of £899, saving £134.85 and putting a 30.3MP full-frame RF-mount body comfortably below the £800 mark.

The lens deals are arguably even more interesting. A refurbished Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM has dropped from £1,159 to £985.15, saving £173.85, while the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II USM is £900.15 instead of £1,059.

There are cheaper bargains too, including the wonderfully useful EF 50mm f/1.8 STM for just £84.14, down from £98.99. If you’re still shooting with an EOS DSLR, or adapting EF glass onto an EOS R body, there could be some particularly good value here.

World Photography Day is as good an excuse as any to get out and take some pictures, but I’d say getting money knocked off the gear you’re going to take them with makes it even better.

The £270 saving on the EOS R8 bundle is the headline attraction for me, but don’t overlook Canon’s refurbished section – especially if you’re comfortable buying previous-generation bodies or EF lenses.

The sale ends at midnight on August 23 and Canon states that these offers cannot be combined with another promotion, so there’s a relatively short window to take advantage.
