Fed up carrying heavy camera gear? This AI exoskeleton wants to do the hard work

Outdoor photography is not always the relaxed, leisurely pursuit it might appear. Camera bodies might be getting lighter, but once you add a couple of lenses, a tripod, filters, batteries, food, water, and perhaps a drone, you’re dragging around half a studio on your back. But Hypershell might have a solution: what if you could make the photographer stronger?

Unveiled at IFA 2026, the new Hypershell Halo is a full-leg consumer exoskeleton designed to assist movement across difficult terrain. For photographers who regularly hike with heavy gear, this could seriously help mobility.

Rather than simply providing power at the hips like previous models, the Halo uses four powered joints covering both the hips and knees, coordinating them as a single system to provide propulsion, weight-bearing support, descent control, and cushioning when landing or moving over uneven ground.

The Halo's HyperDrive Pro system produces up to 1,490W of peak output and can assist users at speeds of up to 17km/h. Hypershell also claims the system can reduce knee-muscle fatigue by as much as 40% during squats, while helping lift the wearer during climbs and absorbing some of the impact on descents. A swappable 370g battery promises up to 20km of range.

Despite strapping four motors to your legs, Halo itself weighs 2.6kg. Its carbon-fiber and titanium construction folds down to less than eight liters. It is also IP54 rated against dust and splashing water, which should make it better suited to the sort of environments landscape and wildlife photographers tend to find themselves in.

It's 2026, so of course there is plenty of AI involved too. More than 30 sensors monitor movement while Hypershell's HyperIntuition 2.0 system attempts to predict what the wearer intends to do around 200 milliseconds in advance, adjusting assistance up to 2,500 times per second. Over time, it can also adapt to an individual's gait and movement habits.

Whether photographers are really ready to strap on an exoskeleton to go out shooting is another question. The Hypershell Halo costs $2,299, which is an investment, but is less than the cost of a lot of the other gear in a kit bag.

But if the choice is between leaving gear at home or getting robotic assistance up the mountain, I can certainly see the appeal.
