The winners of the 2012 National Geographic Photography Contest have been named. Take a look at their spectacular entries.

National Geographic must have had a difficult decision on their hands as their 2012 Photography Contest saw 22,000 entries to the competition from over 150 countries, with all levels of photographic experience applying. But finally the winners have been named.

The three categories of the competition were: People, Places, and Nature, which awarded a winner for each category. In addition, there was a Grand Prize winner and a collection of Viewer’s Choice Winners.

The subject’s name is Busaba, a well cared for Indochinese Tigress whose home is at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Thailand. I had taken many portraits of Busaba previously and it was becoming more and more difficult to come up with an image that appeared any different to the others. Which is why I took to observing her more carefully during my visits in the hope of capturing something of a behavioural shot. The opportunity finally presented itself while watching Busaba enjoying her private pool then shaking herself dry. In all humility I have to say that Mother Nature smiled favourably on me that day! – Ashley Vincent

Everyday in mara starts with something new and different and day ends with memorable experiences with spectacular photographs . I was very lucky of sighting and photographing Malaika the name of female Cheetah and her cub . she is well known for its habit to jump on vehicles. She learned that from her mother Kike, and Kike from her mother Amber.Like her mother she is teaching lessons to her cub . Teaching lessons means addition of another moment for tourist . This is one of the tender moment between Malaika and her cub . I was very lucky to capture that moment. – Sanjeev Bhor

Kenya’s Dandora Municipal Dump Site is the only dumping location for waste in Nairobi, East Africa’s most populous city. Located just 8 km from the central business district, the 30-acre Dandora site literally spills into the households of nearly 1 million people living in nearby slums. Behind the statistics of children with respiratory ailments, toxic blood lead levels, skin disorders, and fatal diseases directly attributed to the waste are stories of communities that have grown to depend on the dump–from street children who live off the money they make selling food and other items they find in its piles to residents who are paid pennies a day by private cartels to sort and recycle waste. The country’s leadership has long shown alarming indifference to Dandora – ignoring environmental laws, UN-commissioned health studies, and calls for closure from human rights groups. – Micah Albert

To celebrate the launch of Digital Camera’s special Portrait Photography: The Ultimate Guide to Better People Photos, we ran a competition on our Facebook page asking people to submit their best portrait photography to our wall.

Entries were of a high standard and made it very difficult to choose our five winners! We’ve listed five commended entries along with the winning shots, and included an explanation by Deputy Editor Paul Grogan as to just what it is we like about these photographs. The winning photographers will each receive a copy of Portrait Photography: The Ultimate Guide to Better People Photos.

Winning entries

By Jim Mortram

Documentary reportage at its finest – it’s as if the camera isn’t even there. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

By Sevgi Ky

This is an intriguing and highly original portrait, and the processing suits the subject perfectly. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

By Paul McMahon

The background is slightly distracting in this shot, but it gives it an on-the-fly feel, and the intensity of the girl’s gaze, and the superb processing, more than make up for it. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

By Daniel Reichert

Composition is the key to this stunning image, with the cello and its strings dividing the frame into quarters and framing the musician quite brilliantly. I also like the really tight crop of the subject’s face and head. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

By Finn Dudaniec

A costume drama in every sense of the word. I particularly like the slightly off-kilter composition, and the carefully placed joker in the hat. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

The five winning entries will each receive a copy of Digital Camera’s Portrait Photography: The Ultimate Guide to Better People Photos.

Commended entries

By Sevgi Ky

Quirky, original and brilliantly posed. The backlighting gives this shot a wonderfully atmospheric feel, and positioning the subject dead centre just goes to show that rules are there to be broken. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

S, by Bart Hoga

I love the make-up in this stylised shot, and the porcelain skin of the model, which is made all the more striking by the deep colour of her dress. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

Isobel, by Karen Oliver

A priceless expression, perfectly captured, and the processing hits the spot to, with its nostalgic, ’70s feel. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

Mimi in the City, by Ray Liu

It’s the beautifully balanced composition – and the way the background follows the curve of the model’s shoulder – that makes this shot. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

By Daniel Reichert

Getting an expression this natural, and this unguarded, is harder than it looks. A classic head and shoulders shot that really captures the sitter’s personality. – Paul Grogan, Deputy Editor

We're running a photography competition to win a Lowepro rucksack worth £150. All you have to do to enter is capture a striking architectural photo.

We’re running a photography competition to win a Lowepro rucksack worth £150. All you have to do to enter is capture a striking architectural photo.

Whether you shoot the entire building or just part of it, we’re looking for images that reveal the character of a building, rather than simply document its form. There’s more to architectural photography than shooting facades face-on – you could shoot across buildings, from above or below, or through other object in the nearby environment, such as parts of other buildings, trees or sculptures.

We’re looking for something original and inspired that truly stands out from the crowd.

The prize: Lowepro Flipside 400 AW

Each month we’re giving away an excellent Lowepro camera backpack worth up to £150 to the lucky winner of our Your Mission photo competition.

The Flipside 400 AW is a high-performance backpack with a unique rear-access compartment and padded waist belt, specifically designed for the wearer to be able to access gear while still wearing the bag. It also includes the patented All WeatherTM cover, adjustable dividers, and Hideaway Tripod MountTM system.

Enter

For your chance to win, simply upload your photo to our gallery in ‘This Month’s Issue – Issue 122′ category, and upload your images by 7 March 2012. The best three shots will be printed in Issue 124, which will go on sale 30 March 2012.

Here are some tips to give you a head start:

Your vantage point is everything. Most buildings are shot from ground level in front of the building. Get up high if you can or go in close and shoot upwards. Explore the other sides of the building, as well as within if it’s a complex structure.

Reflections on rivers and lakes can be effective, especially in night shots.

Look for repeating patterns in details, or strong contrasts both in light and shade, or in form.

Keep an eye on the sky behind the building, and ensure it doesn’t over-expose.

The votes are in, and the World Press Photo of the Year 2011 award goes to Samuel Aranda from Spain.

Aranda, who was on assignment for The New York Times in Yemen, shot his image of a woman holding a wounded relative in her arms during clashes in Sanaa, Yemen, on 15 October 2011. The woman was inside a mosque being used as a field hospital by demonstrators who were clashing against the rule of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Some 5,247 photographers from 124 countries entered the World Press Photo 2011 competition, now in its 55th year, submitting a staggering 101,254 pictures by the mid-January deadline.

The World Press Photo 2011 jury gave prizes in nine themed categories to 57 photographers of 24 nationalities, hailing from Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the USA.

Jury member Koyo Kouoh said of Aranda’s picture: “It is a photo that speaks for the entire region. It stands for Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, for all that happened in the Arab Spring. But it shows a private, intimate side of what went on. And it shows the role that women played, not only as care-givers, but as active people in the movement.”

Fellow World Press Photo 2011 jury member Aidan Sullivan added: “The winning photo shows a poignant, compassionate moment, the human consequence of an enormous event, an event that is still going on. We might never know who this woman is, cradling an injured relative, but together they become a living image of the courage of ordinary people that helped create an important chapter in the history of the Middle East.”

The judging is conducted at the World Press Photo office, where all entries are presented anonymously to the jury, who discuss and debates their merits over a period of two weeks. The jury operates independently of the World Press Photo organisation.

The World Press Photo contest is open to professional press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers.

Billed by organisers as the “global photographic event of the year,” the Sony World Photography Awards 2012 competition has recorded more than 112,000 entries from 171 countries, with the shortlisted images depicting a range of stories of extraordinary lives from around the world.

In the Professional competition, many of the images depict the major global events of 2011, such as the war in Libya, the European economic crisis and the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, while the Open competition covered an even wider gamut of subjects and genres.

Returning photographers from previous years, include 2010 Professional Landscape winner, Peter Franck (Germany); who this year is a finalist in three categories; 2011 Professional Contemporary Issues and Current Affairs winner, Javier Arcenillas (Spain); and Chan Kwok Hung (Hong Kong) whose stunningly dramatic image ‘Buffalo Race’ won the Overall Open Competition in 2011.

As shortlisted photographers in the Sony World Photography Awards, each will have their work exhibited at an exhibition at London’s Somerset House to coincide with the award ceremony in April 2012.

The annual Sony World Photography Awards ceremony and gala dinner will take place on 26 April at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane. The awards celebration will once again take place alongside World Photo, London, a month-long event full of guest speakers, workshops and other photographic events for photographers of all abilities.

The opening weekend of World Photo London will be held at Somerset House from 27 – 30 April with selected events including portfolio reviews, workshops, symposiums and the Sony World Photography Awards winners’ exhibitions, which continue through to 20 May 2012.
