Although a number of Nikon DSLRs have video recording capabilities, we understand that many of you would rather shoot still images rather than moving pictures. However, as we’ve often stumbled across some absolutely beautiful short films shot using Nikon DSLRs, we decided to put together a post featuring five of the best Nikon films.

WHY is an official video from Nikon was shot to demonstrate what the Nikon D4 is capable of. Turns out it’s capable of very beautiful things indeed! You can watch the making of WHY here.

Title: WHY
Camera: D4
By: Corey Rich

Joy Ride is the official Nikon D800 video. You can watch the making of here.

Antarctica: Tales of Ice, is a compilation of scenes from Antarctica, featuring a rather bizarre soundtrack! The film was shot on a D3100, and although it is no where near as high spec as the D4 or the D800, the beautiful imagery here clearly demonstrates that its full HD video capture is certainly nothing to be scoffed at.

IGLU Bauanleitung records a group of backpackers building an igloo. Shot on a Nikon D300s and Canon EOS 550D, the film demonstrates the very high standard of the cameras’ video capture ability. Also one to watch if you want to know how to build an igloo!

Video sharing website Vimeo has unveiled its new redesign, the centrepiece of which is a new 2x larger full-width player.

The company says it has also developed new ‘smart browsing’ capabilities, which include a pull-down video discovery bar on the video page that enables users to explore their feed, recently viewed videos, watch later queue and Vimeo’s new ‘Related Videos,’ which suggests videos based on similar videos that other people have ‘liked’.

New search filters allow users to narrow results by length, credits, copyright, relevancy and more, as well as search for videos with Creative Commons licenses.

New privacy options include the ability to keep your video stats and ‘your activity’ feed private, as well as block other users.

Visit the Vimeo website for a full list of the new features.

Use Photoshop to turn an average shot into a winning image by removing unwanted background objects and making your subject stand out.

All too often, a good shot would look great if it wasn’t for a distracting element in the background. When shooting spontaneous action, such as a toddler’s first steps, you can’t afford to fiddle around composing the shot to avoid background clutter – take your eye off the action and you’ll miss the decisive moment. Luckily, Photoshop offers all the tools you’ll need to clean up the scene long after the special event has been captured on camera.

In this walkthrough, we’ll show you how to select the child in our source image and remove the supporting parent in the background so that your subject is the main point of focus. You’ll need to replace the areas occupied by the adult with appropriate pixels from the rest of the shot, for which we’ll use the Clone Stamp tool. You’ll also learn how to protect fine details, like the child’s hair, from being cloned out with the rest of the adult.

Give your portraits a modern makeover using Photoshop

In recent years, a distinct style of commercial family portrait has increased in popularity – shot against a pure white backdrop and processed in striking high-contrast mono. Here, we’ll demonstrate that there’s no need to pay through the nose for commercial photography. With Photoshop Elements, you can recreate the effect with a little judicious image editing.

We’ll start with a typical family portrait shot, desaturate the colour, and then perform a little Levels magic to generate the super-high-contrast tonality. By using Levels, you can compress the tonal range of your desaturated image and shift the distribution of the highlights, midtones and shadows.

Of course, as with any really effective graphic image, you’ll need to do a little bit extra, tweaking the final image with some manual dodging and burning. The Dodge and Burn tools enable you to selectively lighten and darken particular tonal ranges – in effect you’re able to paint with light. The Exposure setting controls how much the tools lighten or darken your chosen range of tones. You’ll get brilliant results, and save a fortune too!
