How many Nikon DSLRs can you get aboard the International Space Station? Apparently it’s at least 10, as NASA astronaut Donald Pettit found out. He has an impressive collection of Nikons. Can anyone work out which models he has?

If you’re wondering how good his photography is, it’s pretty good as these pictures (which we think are probably the most impressive star trail photographs we’ve ever seen) demonstrate.

When Captain Alan Poindexter piloted the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2012, he made the most of every photo opportunity he could with the Nikon D3s.

After Nikon approached NASA with prototypes of the D3s, the decision was made that it would be the camera of choice for NASA as its performance in low light conditions was excellent. Poindexter says, “Never before (at least without several strobes or a lot of noise) were we able to photograph well exposed interior shots.”

You can view his images from the Discovery at The Luminous Landscape, along with fascinating insights into taking photographs in space.
