iPhone 11 announcement today! What to expect from the 3 new models

The iPhone 11 will be announced today – well, actually three iPhone 11s will be announced on today, along with a slew of other Apple products. 

Thanks to the cascade of leaks leading up to its launch, there won't be too many surprises when Apple CEO Tim Cook takes the stage, but there are still enough questions about the different models to warrant a bit of explanation. 

With two new Pro variants, the photography oriented iPhone 11 looks certain to be Apple's best camera phone yet, and not just the best iphone for photography. Here's the lowdown on the three different models and what they do…

iPhone 11 Pro Max

Previously speculated to be called the iPhone 11S Max, since it succeeds the iPhone XS Max, the iPhone 11 Pro Max will be one of two models bearing the new 'Pro' designation (a la the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro product lines). 

Both Pro models will possess the all-new triple-camera array, a first for Apple, which you can see in the images of the dummy phones by both Nood Cases (hat tip to Toms Guide) and Olixar (thanks, T3). 

Rumors (and common sense) suggest that the third camera will be an ultra wide-angle, to complement the existing wide-angle and telephoto lenses. We don't yet know what, if any, kind of megapixel bump the rear cameras will receive, but the front-facing selfie camera could receive a boost from 7MP to 12MP.

iPhone 11 Pro

Sometimes referred to previously as the iPhone 11S (being the sequel to the XS), this model will be identical to the iPhone 11 Pro Max other than the screen size. Dimensions for the iPhone 11 versions aren't yet available, but the screens were 5.8 inches and 6.5-inches respectively for the XS and XS Max. 

Like its Max big brother, the iPhone 11 Pro will bear a triple-camera array with what is expected to be an ultra wide-angle camera. 

It has been reported that the two Pro models will feature a battery that's up to 25% larger than before, and will also possess wireless two-way-charging (taking after the Wireless PowerShare function on the Samsung Galaxy S10).

iPhone 11

Suggested to be called the iPhone 11R, given that it follows the iPhone XR, the far more keyboard-friendly iPhone 11 will be the base unit of the family. Unlike its older siblings it will feature a dual-camera array. It will still, however, feature the same raised Tile design, which does look fairly ugly. 

Thankfully this is the last year that Sir Jony Ive will have his fingerprints on the iPhone design, so next year could see something a bit more daring in terms of looks (along with things such as 5G and even 3D, which are rumored to be part of the iPhone 12 roadmap).

As you might expect, the iPhone 11 will run the latest operating system straight out of the box – so expect plenty of fun on your first few days as you update all your apps to work with iOS 13…
