Wireless mics drastically improve audio for video and content creation – but they don’t always hide well. But SmallRig’s latest plug-and-play wireless mic has just an 8.8mm – or .35 inch – logo-free clip. And, the new mic even has eight different color sleeves to better blend with different outfits.

The SmallRig S70 is a budget-friendly, beginner-friendly wireless mic. The mic looks poised to compete with other similar wireless mics designed to be discrete and simple, like the similarly compact Hollyland Lark M2S and the DJI Mic Mini.

The mic mixes a simple plug-and-play design designed for audio newbies with a handful of fine-tuning features. The mic comes with nine EQ presets –tuned by four-time Grammy winner Luca Bignardi – that allow new users to quickly adjust the settings based on the scenario. For example, those presets include settings for male and female speakers, singing, guitars, and recording environmental sound effects.

Along with those presets, the mic has three recording modes with mono, stereo, and a safety track (which records a lower volume backup when connected to a camera).

SmallRig says the S70 is designed to blend in. The clip portion of the mic that’s visible outside of clothing has no logo and is just 8.8mm or .35 inches wide. SmallRig will also offer eight different color covers for that clip so users can help the black mic better blend with different colors of clothing.

While the S70 is targeted towards beginners and content creators on a budget, the S70’s spec sheet includes 48kHz 24-bit audio, a 300m or 984 foot range, and eight hours of continuous recording without recharging. Settings on the mic can be adjusted inside the SmallGoGO App as well as some settings available from the receiver.

The S70 bundles two wireless mics along with two receivers – one USB-C for phones and one for cameras – along with a charging case and windscreen. The charging case can hold up to 40 hours of use time for recharging on the go. The camera receiver has a five-level adjustable gain, while the phone receiver has a three-level gain.

SmallRig unveiled the S70 during CES – the accessory brand’s first time attending the large Las Vegas tech show.

The SmallRig S70 is expected to start shipping in the US on January 12 and in other regions on January 15. The wireless mic kit retails for $89.99 / £81.90 / AU$141.90.

SmallRig has just launched the Camera 28mm External Optical Viewfinder, which fits compatible Sony, Leica, Ricoh, Fujifilm , Nikon, and Canon cameras. It’s built to replicate the optical viewing experience of classic film cameras, and will no doubt appeal to users of retro cameras such as the Fujifilm X100VI, Nikon Z fc, and Leica Q3, all of which are compatible (see full list of compatibility below).

I can see this little OVF coming into its own when paired with a camera such as the Ricoh GR III, Fujifilm X-M5, or Nikon Z30, all cameras that rely entirely on rear LCD screens and don’t otherwise have a viewfinder.

This little external OVF provides a 35mm equivalent 28mm field of view, for a wide-angle perspective that SmallRig says is “optimized for street photography”. It has a built-in 4:3 rectangular viewfinder and is said to use “premium” optics, within its five-lens optical construction, delivering high-light transmission (98%) and “exceptional clarity with minimal distortion”.

This little device is built from aluminium alloy, weighs roughly around 23g and measures 29.0x25.9x21.0mm / 1.1x1.0x0.8in. Inside the box you get the viewfinder itself and a cleaning cloth.

Something’s always bugged me about SmallRig’s Night Eagle camera cages: they don’t feature a big metal eagle’s head. Well, the Shenzhen-based outlet has finally righted that wrong by releasing a grip with – you guessed it – a molded eagle’s head on the end of it. Badass, SmallRig – badass!

The release could be considered a little over the top, but – as somebody who watched Top Gun-alike, Iron Eagle, at the weekend, has an Apple Music playlist dedicated to hair metal, and is writing this very article wearing a Hard Rock Cafe t-shirt – I’d argue it’s the epitome of good taste.

But if you just can’t see yourself shooting a wedding with a bird's head perched atop your rig (everyone to their own…), don’t worry. SmallRig’s also released a pair of, shall we say, less ostentatious grips for the more unassuming photographer.

The trio of grips are all part of the ImageGrip Rotating Handle Series, which includes the Eagle Handle, Wooden Handle and Liquid Handle. The first two are both primarily wooden grips, with aluminum alloy components, while the latter is made entirely from aluminum alloy.

They all feature 360° stepless rotation and a quick-release design, but each carry their own hallmarks. The Liquid Handle is available with a Nato Clamp or Arri Rosette and is said to deliver an “ultra-lightweight design”.

The modern, liquid-like look is designed to conform to the hand and the Nato-rail-compatible grip slides into the included Nato rail for quick attachment / detachment.

The rather classy-looking Wooden Handle is built to be ergonomic and looks to feature a textured patch that sits beneath the palm to provide better purchase.

Unlike the Liquid Handle’s standard Nato rail, it features SmallRig’s HawkLock H22 Nato Rail – said to provide an “instant secure attachment” (not to mention having a totally rad name). It’s also available with an Arri Rosette.

And finally, the Eagle Handle itself – the coolest-looking camera accessory (in product photos at least) that I’ve ever seen. This one only appears to be available in standard Nato form and, according to SmallRig, “Finger placement grooves lock your grip like an eagle’s talon”.

It even suggests displaying it when not in use, and since I display my camera kit anyway, maybe that’s not such a bad idea!

The SmallRig SR-RG2 has a list price of $69.99 / £67.90 / AU$112.90, which isn't bad value on the face of it, considering the multifunctional nature of the product, saving you from purchasing a tabletop tripod, selfie stick, grip and camera remote seperately. However, the proof of the pudding is in how well it performs each of these functions, as I will explore below.

SmallRig SR-RG2: Design & Handling

The SR-RG2 is about six inches long, with a set of simple camera controls on the top, while the underside is contoured and has a rubberized surface for comfortable holding. One end features a standard tripod screw for attaching to your camera's tripod mount socket, atop a head that can be tilted and panned by pressing a lock-release switches.

In grip mode, it offers a comfortable way to hold and operate your camera single-handedly, with the basic functions of stills shooting and video recording sitting under the thumb, as well as a lens zoom and customizable button. This control module is magnetically attached to the base unit and can be detached and used as a remote, with a 10m (33ft) range.

The end of the grip pulls out for a modest extension that increases the length of the grip to approximately double its stowed size. It's not the longest selfie stick in the world, but it does offer a view that's a little wider than would otherwise be possible. There are also a pair of flip-out legs on the underside of the device to form a mini-tripod.

SmallRig SR-RG2: Performance

To use the controller with your camera, you will first have to pair it via Bluetooth, and it thus only supports certain models. It is compatible with an extensive range of Sony cameras, a fair range of Canon models, but only lists one Nikon camera, the Z50 II. However, I found it also worked out-of-the-box with the Nikon Z5 II, which I had for testing at the same time prior to the camera's release.

Pairing the controller involves delving into the host camera's network settings and pressing a couple of buttons on the remote, and is straightforward enough. It can be recharged via a USB-C socket.

The controls are fairly basic, but are still more flexible than many standalone remote shutter releases. At the top is a thumb-operated wide/telephoto rocker switch for zooming with compatible motorized zoom lenses. There's a two-stage shutter release button, so a half-press is used to focus the image and a full-press takes the shot. There's a separate rec button for recording video (or set to another function in stills mode if your camera allows), and a further 'Custom' button, which mirrors the host camera's Fn1 setting, so to customize what this button does, you will have to change the corresponding function on the camera.

The selfie stick offers a small but potentially useful extension of around a foot (30cm) for squeezing more people into group shots, but dedicated selfie sticks will go much further.

Flipping down two small legs on the underside of the grip transforms it into a mini-tripod. It's a bit of a lop-sided affair, with the distance between the splayed legs not nearly as wide as between the legs and the base of the unit. Cameras need to be positioned with care, with the lens pointing over the main unit to keep it balanced. The tilt-head needs to be adjusted to provide a level base for the camera, and the height cannot be extended with the pull-out stick as it comes out at around a 45º angle, which would send the whole thing toppling over. As a result, you're limited to the relatively low shooting height of about four inches (100cm) when it's used as a tripod.

SmallRig SR-RG2: Verdict

The SmallRig SR-RG2 offers several ways to support your camera in one handy device, but it doesn't excel in any of them. The selfie stick length is limited, only adding around a foot of extension. The tripod height is also quite low and cannot be adjusted, as it cannot be used in conjunction with the selfie stick extension to raise the shooting height. It also feels a bit flimsy in tripod mode, and I wouldn't go much heavier than a mirrorless camera with a lightweight kit lens.

I found the Bluetooth control to be very good, though. It's easy to set up and responsive, and while it only offers a limited set of functionality, it's more versatile than many dedicated remote shutter releases, which serve only to fire the shutter. The two-stage shutter is a nice touch, and the addition of a zoom control, Rec button and custom control enables it to be configured to suit the way you shoot. I can see vloggers, in particular, finding this a really handy all-in-one solution for straight-to-camera presentations.

In a nutshell, then, it won't replace a dedicated selfie stick or mini tripod, but does offer the basics of both in one handy package.

Alternatives

Creating your own rig is a right of passage for videographers and now all those lucky Nikon Z5 II owners can do just that – and in style, too – thanks to the release of the SmallRig “Night Eagle” Cage for the newly-announced Nikon Z5 II. In fact, this stylish-looking cage is compatible with a wealth of Z cameras, the original Nikon Z5, the Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7, Nikon Z6 II, and Nikon Z7 II.

And just like the existing Night Eagle cages for the Nikon Z8 and Nikon Z6 III, this new model looks the business. The “Night Eagle” Cage itself features silicone padding on its interior for a little extra cushioning, an Arca-Swiss quick-release plate, H21 “HawkLock” Quick Release NATO Rail, three-point locking system (so the cage fits securely to the camera), two strap-mounting options via a strap slot and QD (quick detach) socket. Plus, a wealth of mounting holes, with 1/4-inch-20 threaded and locating holes, ARRI 3/8-inch-16 locating holes, and 3/8-inch-16 threaded holes.

If you opt for the kit with a handle, you’ll find what SmallRig calls “Eagle-Wings”. This is because silicon grips pop out either side of the handle – like a pair of wings – to reveal provision for a single 1/4-inch-20 and 3/8-inch-16 screw, and two M2.5 screws.

And if the “Night Eagle” doesn’t quite fit your budget or you want a more utilitarian-looking alternative, SmallRig also offers the standard Cage for Nikon Z5II, which retails for $69.99 / £67.90 / AU$113.90. The cages are available to pre-order now, with an expected shipping date of May 15.

The lens shapes light as it comes into the camera – but lenses can also shape light as it comes out of a light source. Lately, I’ve noticed several photographers using not just interchangeable lens cameras, but interchangeable lens lights used to create dramatic shaped lighting. These lenses can be used to create spotlight effects and even alter the shape of the light to mimic window blinds, geometric shapes, and more.

One of the latest examples of this concept is the SmallRig SP-mini Spotlight, which introduces several different effects to the company’s existing RC series video lights.

Using a lens to shape light isn’t a new concept – after all, if you’ve ever taken apart a flashlight, you’ll find a cone-shaped silver reflector and a lens to project that light into the classic flashlight beam. But I’ve noticed a number of studio lighting kits that seem to be taking this long-standing concept up a notch and using it to give photographers and videographers more control over the shape of their light, creating a more modern version of the photography snoot.

The newly-announced SmallRig Mini Spotlight, for example, is a lens that mounts on the RC60 or RC100 video lights. The lens uses optics to increase the light transmission by more than four times, resulting in a brighter light. But the lens can also be used with gobos, or discs with a pattern cut into them, that change the shape of the light. That allows the SmallRig setup to create a spotlight effect that can take on a number of different shapes, from a crescent moon to a triangle.

The SmallRig Mini Spotlight is just one recent example of using lenses to shape light. SmallRig also has a flashlight with a light-shaping feature, which, like the new option, is a constant video light. There are several similar light-shaping tools geared towards more powerful but photo-only strobe lights. The Wescott Optical Spot by Lindsay Adler uses a 150mm f/3.5 to add shape and effects to a studio strobe. Flashpoint has a competing optical spot modifier, while Godox uses the term flash projection modifier instead.

These, of course, are a modern take on the snoot, a cone-shaped lighting modifier that narrows the spread of a light into a spotlight, which can also be used with gobos. A snoot is a cone-shape lighting modifier, while an optical snoot uses an actual lens to produce more crisp lines on that spotlight effect, rather than to softer edges of a traditional snoot.

While the idea of shaping light with a lens certainly isn’t new, I’m starting to see more of these light-shaping tools pop-up, which also means that I’m seeing more affordable choices hit the market – and that’s a great thing. Learning how to manipulate light opens up endless opportunities for photographers – and shaping that light is part of that equation.

The new SmallRig Mini Spotlight sits towards the more affordable end compared to existing options, with the new modifier retailing for $149 / £144 / AU$238. Using the new Mini Spotlight, requires having the RC60 or RC100 video lights, which start at $179 / £182 / AU$298 for creatives that don’t already own the light.

SmallRig has announced a new camera cage that snuggly houses a Canon EOS R5 Mark II with the optional CF-R20EP cooling grip attached. It's the latest in a line from a company that already makes some of the best camera rigs and cages for a wide range of camera bodies (with and without various attachments).

The SmallRig Cage for Canon EOS R5 Mark II with Cooling Fan CF-R20EP (product code 5092 for short) is designed to protect the camera while offering a range of versatile expansion options. It is secured to the camera with one 1/4"-20 tripod-mount screw at the bottom and two M3 screws on either side, while integrated silicone pads prevent scratches. The cage allows unobstructed access to buttons, card slots, and battery compartments.

The cage is equipped with multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded holes, as well as ARRI locating holes, to accommodate a whole host of SmallRig accessories, including top handles for smooth camera movements, side handles, monitor mounts, and magic arms. Three cold shoe mounts allow the attachment of devices such as microphones and LED panels.

An integrated Arca-Swiss quick-release plate facilitates swift transitions between handheld, stabilizer, and tripod setups. A front 1/4"-20 locating hole is compatible with a clamp that allows for the attachment of a single 15mm rod and supports accessories like follow focus. Additionally, it features a strap slot for wrist straps and a QD socket for shoulder straps. SmallRig has replaced its SR-RG1 multifunction wireless shooting grip with an updated model that is now compatible with the Nikon Z50 II – and imaginatively named the successor the SmallRig SR-RG2. While the previous grip worked with a range of Canon and Sony cameras, it was incompatible with Nikons. The new grip addresses the problem, albeit to a very limited degree, as the Z50 II appears to be the only Nikon currently supported by the updated model.

The SmallRig SR-RG2 combines a camera grip, selfie stick, and desktop mini-tripod into one, and is aimed at vloggers, live streamers, and filmmakers. It is equipped with a removable magnetic wireless control that allows remote camera operations including shutter release, recording, focus, zoom, and custom settings from up to 10m (33ft) away. The remote control houses a built-in battery, and features a USB-C charging port, allowing for a full charge in 2.5 hours, which provides up to 40 hours of use.

The grip attaches to the camera using a standard 1/4”-20 tripod mount screw and has rubber pads to prevent scratching the host camera. It can be transformed into a mini-tripod, supporting cameras on a table or similar stable surface during live streaming or filming. It can also be extended to a 14.6cm (5.7in) selfie stick for wider framing and has a 360° pan and 180° tilt (90° forward and backward) mechanism.

The SmallRig SR-RG2 can support a load of 1.5kg (3.3lb) as a tripod and 0.8kg (1.76lb) when extended. It is compact and lightweight, measuring 174.8 x 46 x 39.4mm when unextended and weighing 210 grams. It easily fits into camera bags, and an included wrist strap offers convenient portability. It is set to retail for $69.99 / £67.90 / AU$112.90.

If there’s one thing for certain, it's that SmallRig can transform almost any camera into a professional video rig with its bespoke expansion and control options. In 2025, the brand already launched a dedicated video cage and filter system for the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, and now it’s pushing forward with a brand-new Rotating Side Handle with Trigger Rec kit for Sony, Canon and Blackmagic cameras.

SmallRig is constantly developing products that make our jobs as photographers and videographers easier, and its new Carbon Fiber Tripod Kit (FT-S303) takes professional videography outdoors.

Historically, the best tripods for video were typically large and cumbersome in order to support the weight of heavy cinema cameras. However, advancements in tripod technology and design have changed this. SmallRig's new carbon fiber tripod exemplifies this evolution featuring ease-of-use components in a lightweight and compact frame.

Designed for travel and professional outdoor video capture, the new carbon fiber tripod weighs just 6.4 pounds / 2.9 kg and measures 25.2-inches / 64cm (with the head removed) when stored. This makes it a great travel companion as it can fit into a standard 28-inch suitcase.

The carbon fiber legs have a diameter of just 3cm, balancing stability and strength with lightweight portability. Atop the legs is a 65mm bowl base for the tripod head and a built-in bubble level for quick and easy levelling. Leveling outdoors can be tricky at the best of times and self-adjusting ball-jointed feet are included to help further.

SmallRig has just announced the SmallRig RC 220 Pro series COB light. Based on its extremely popular SmallRig RC 220, the updated model improves performance, versatility, and style – not to mention it's 24% smaller!

SmallRig is constantly pushing the boundaries of photography and video peripherals, and its latest announcement seems to have completely reinvented the professional outdoor video tripod.

With powerful video shooting features (such as the ability to shoot in LOG color), the latest iPhone models are very useful tools for moviemakers. Built-in features such as optical image stabilization (combined with software stabilization solutions such as Action Mode) mean that you can shoot gimbal smooth footage with a handheld iPhone.

By using the kit’s side or top-mounted handles you can hold the iPhone in a more comfortable way and capture tripod-steady static shots or perform smoother pans, tilts, cranes, and tracking shots.

SmallRig x Brandon Li: Specifications

SmallRig x Brandon Li: Key Features

There are many similar cages and cases available for smartphones but the Brandon Li Mobile Video Kit brings some stylish variations to the traditional cage set-up for iPhone 15 Pro Max users. 

When shooting landscape (horizontal) clips you hold the handles at either side of the cage (like you do with other cage setups). However, if you need to shoot in portrait (vertical) orientation the cleverly designed quick-release clips enable you to remove the handles from the sides and clip them to the top and bottom of the cage in seconds. 

With other smartphone cages such as the SmallRig All-In-One Kit for Smartphones, you need to spend much more time unscrewing and remounting the handles (which could result in you missing a shot!). 

Another key feature is the remote shutter button that is mounted on the right-handle cold shoe mount. This enables you to start and stop shooting with the press of your thumb while you hold the handle securely (rather than having to tap the iPhone Camera app’s onscreen button which can cause your shot to wobble). 

The kit also ships with a VNDR (variable neutral density) filter so you can capture more detail in a landscape’s bright sky (or force your iPhone’s Camera app to use a slower shutter speed.)

SmallRig x Brandon Li: Design & Handling

The cage is a thing of beauty, with its sleek aluminum frame graduating from a subtle dark green to black. The side handles also bear the same graduated colours plus the cage is branded with film-maker Brandon Li’s signature and the SmallRig logo to illustrate the collaboration between creator and manufacturer. 

Our iPhone 15 Pro Max slipped smoothly into the cage (while being secured and protected by silicone pads). It was clipped safely in place by a one-click locking system. All the iPhone’s buttons were accessible behind the cage’s silicone protective buttons.

After unboxing the kit we needed to spend a few minutes setting up the handles’ quick clip release system. Supplied Allen keys could be accessed by flipping open the bottom of each handle. Once the quick-release connectors had been attached to each handle there was no need to use the Allen keys again. By simply pressing a spring-loaded button we could unclip a handle and re-clip it to mounts on the top or side of the cage. 

This innovative quick-release system enables you to shoot in a vertical or horizontal orientation using two side or top handles, or you can mount one handle on the top for low-angle action sequences. There are also cold shoe slots on the edges of the cage, so you can attach third-party accessories such as LED lights or mini shotgun mics (such as the Joby Wavo PRO).

SmallRig x Brandon Li: Performance

To test the SmallRig Brandon Li Mobile Video Kit I filmed a walk in the countryside with friends and family. While walking, the tactile silicone surface on the handles made it easy for me to carry the iPhone 15 Pro Max, even when the rig was covered in rainwater. I was also able to deploy the iPhone in landscape mode to film interesting events without worrying about it slipping from my grip. 

A gimbal might have struggled on a wet and windy shoot like this (especially if rain got into its motors) - but the SmallRig cage and iPhone 15 Pro Max weren’t as vulnerable to water and I was able to capture gimbal-smooth camera moves with ease thanks to the firm and comfortable hold offered by the kit’s handles (see our supporting video). 

The 5-stop VND (variable neutral density) filter that clips onto the front of the cage was useful in two ways. It enabled me to adjust the amount of light entering the iPhone’s lenses by simply rotating the filter, so I could capture more detail in the sky. The filter could also be detached and re-attached magnetically so it was useful for keeping raindrops off my iPhone’s lenses. This saved me the hassle of having to constantly wipe the lenses. 

On the downside, the edge of the VND filter was visible in the top left corner of the frame when I shot using the .5x (13 mm) Ultra Wide lens. This wasn’t a huge problem as I was shooting in 4K and could easily crop the edge of the frame to lose the filter - see our supporting video. I could also quickly remove the VND filter when shooting at Ultra Wide thanks to its magnetic properties. The VND filter didn’t obscure the shot when I was using any of the other lenses and it was very effective at capturing bright sky detail in my high-contrast landscape location.

SmallRig x Brandon Li: Verdict

The SmallRig Brandon Li Mobile Video Kit should be an attractive accessory for filmmakers who have invested in an iPhone 15 Pro Max. It enables you to maneuver your iPhone with ease and comfort, capturing gimbal-smooth moves even in adverse weather conditions. 

I especially appreciated the removable Bluetooth shutter button so we could trigger video recordings (or capture stills) from 10 meters away - perfect for vloggers who want to film themselves on location. You can also mount the cage on a tripod (in social-media-friendly portrait or widescreen TV landscape orientations) thanks to ten 1/4-inch threaded holes around its edges. The quick-release handles are a very welcome feature and you can store them and the cage in a supplied soft carry bag after a shoot. 

The branded cage itself looks so sleek and striking that you may be tempted to leave your iPhone in it when your shoot is over.

Alternatives

The branded Brandon Li video cage is only available for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but if you have an iPhone 15 Pro there is a non-branded SmallRig version that includes similar accessories such as the removable Bluetooth shutter and the handy quick-release handles. SmallRig also sells a SmallRig Creator Kit which consists of a larger and chunkier cage that boasts a universal mount to suit any smartphone model. This Creator Kit also ships with a handy LED that you can slip into one of its cold shoe mounts (plus a mini shotgun mic to improve your production’s sound.)

As video makers and photographers, we have a wide choice when it comes to choosing LED lights to illuminate our subjects. Unlike traditional flashguns, LED lights such as SmallRig’s RC 60B  provide a constant light source, so there’s no need to sync a burst of flash with the camera’s shutter. 

LED lights vary in power and design. Light wand LEDs, such as the Zhiyun Fiveray F100, look like light sabers and can emit a range of gel-like colors as well as provide animated light patterns such as Lightning and Flickering TV sets.

The SmallRig RC 60B is a COB (chip-on-board light) that looks and behaves more like a typical studio light. As a 60W bi-color light you can adjust its colour temperature to complement daylight or indoor light sources. You can also adjust the intensity of the light's output to avoid over-exposing your subject.

However, the RC 60B also shares properties with wand lights in that it is much more portable than typical studio lights such as the much more expensive and heavy SmallRig RC 350D. This makes the RC 60B a useful tool for photographers and video makers who need to get out of the studio and light their subjects on the go in a variety of differently lit scenarios. 

The SmallRig RC 60B, being a bi-color LED, you can change the color temperature of its output between a range of 2700K-6500K (degrees Kelvin). Typical daylight is measured in 5600K, so the RC 60B can emulate a wide range of light sources, from an indoor tungsten bulb at 2500K to bright daylight at 6500K. 

You can also control the intensity of the LED’s output to add a strong key light from a distance or gently fill in some shadows on a model’s face. The light ships in a padded carry case that includes a hyperreflector. When you clip this reflector to the lamp its output is a striking 11,200 Lux. 

SmallRig RC 60B: Design & Handling

The RC 60B was much smaller than I expected - I could hold it in the palm of my hand. The supplied handle that you attach to its base has a rubberized textured grip so the RC 60B can be carried easily and secularly in one hand. Once you clip the hyper-reflector it looks just like a mini studio right, but you can take it anywhere. 

At only 650g you can hold it in one hand while shooting with the other. The kit includes a handle that you can screw into the base of the lamp which makes it comfortable to carry. There’s also a tilt-able light stand mount that enables you to operate the light hands-free.

Two rubber and textured knobs enable you to adjust various properties of the lamp with ease (even if you have sweaty fingers). The knobs also act as buttons, so you can adjust color temperature or intensity. You can also use the knobs and buttons to access the 9 lighting effects and adjust properties such as the frequency of lightning flashes or the color temperature of a paparazzi flashgun.  All the settings are displayed on a handy 1.3-inch LED screen.

The lamp is constructed from a flame-retardant plastic body. As well as the two main control buttons it features three smaller buttons and switches to turn the lamp on or change its mode. Quality-wise these little buttons are reminiscent of buttons you’d find on a plastic alarm clock, so they look like they could be damaged if you dropped the LED. However, at around $200 the RC 60B is a budget light compared with the more expensive SmallRig RC 350D COB LED which retails at over $800. As they say - "you get what you pay for".

SmallRig RC 60B: Performance

To test the RC 60B I booked a TV studio, since the lamp looked like a studio light from its picture. On opening the carry case I was surprised at how small and light it was. Once I attached the handle and reflector to the LED I had all the light sources I needed to film a series of clips at different locations in the building.

I used the RC 60B as a key light when in dark corridors or as a fill light when daylight streamed through a window. At the twist of a knob, I was able to make the color temperature of the lamp complement existing light sources, from cold daylight to warm indoor light. I was able to shoot holding my iPhone in a SmallRig cage in one hand while carrying the RC 60B comfortably in my other hand. Occasionally I press ganged a pal to hold the RC 60B like a portable light stand so I could change its angle pin my subject.

I was impressed at how wide an area the light could illuminate and I rarely needed to to shine at 100% as this was too strong a light source for my subject.  The built-in fan kept the RC 60B cool enough to operate without interfering with my audio (as you’ll hear from this review’s supporting video).

Unlike larger studio lights such as the SmallRig RC 350D COB, the SmallRig RC 60B has an internal battery that you can charge via its USB-C port. This gives you a wireless solution to lighting a subject in any location (without worrying about access to a mains supply). 

Our test kit shipped with a SmallRig power bank adaptor that clips on the back of the light. This mount contains a clamp that can hold a typical power bank which you can connect to the RC 60B to extend its operating time.  The RC 60B’s internal battery should give you around 45 minutes of illumination at maximum power, or 75 minutes in ECO mode. We must point out that the RC 60B can only achieve its maximum output if you connect an external 65W-100 PD power bank to it.

I was initially confused by the Eco button which is designed to extend the shooting time of the lamp. After charging the RC 60B I was able to produce a strong light source but nothing seemed to change when the Eco button was pressed. I realized after some research that you only get the maximum output from the lamp when a power bank is attached to the supplied clip-on mount (after which you can toggle between Eco mode and full power!)

The RC 60B also provides a collection of 9 animated lighting effects that emulate the flashbulbs of the Paparazzi or add flashes of lightning to your drama productions.  You can change the color temperature of these lighting effects but you can’t add colored gel-like effects (such as the blues and reds of a police car for example). 

SmallRig RC 60B: Final Verdict

The SmallRig RC 60B COB LED is an attractive purchase because it combines portability with power. You can light a subject in any location without worrying about access to cable power supplies. Even when powered solely by the interior battery we found the light source was too bright on full power, so you should be able to comfortably enjoy an hour-long shoot (or much more if you clamp a power bank to its clip).  Being able to adjust color temperature is a valuable feature too. 

The 9 animated light presets could be useful for drama creators (using effects such as Fireworks or Flame). However unlike other LEDS (see alternatives section) the lack of vibrant gel-like colors such as blues, greens, and reds means that the animated effects are limited to the Kelvin scale of warm to cool variations. So you can’t use the RC 60B to emulate the blue and red flashes of an emergency services vehicle or produce a more colorful firework display for example. 

For its price, this light does provide value for money and thanks to its carry kit you’ll enjoy transporting it to a shoot and adding a range of lighting effects to your subject. 

Alternatives

The Hobolite Micro Creator Kit is another palm-sized LED light, though it only packs 20W of power compared to the SmallRig RC 60B’s 60W. However, it does a great job of illuminating portraits in any location thanks to its built-in battery. The Hobolite Micro also produces animated lighting effects to enhance your video productions. Like the SmallRig RC 60B the Hobolite Micro is a bi-color light, so you can only change its color temperature. 

However, it ships with a collection of 6 magnetic color gels that enable you to change the mood of your clips and stills by adding blues, greens, etc - something you can’t do with the RC 60B. The Hobolite Micro is also cheaper than the SmallRig RC 60B (which reflects its lower 20W power output).

SmallRig has provided another reason to add your name to Apple's waiting list, by teaming up with filmmaker Brandon Li to produce a video kit for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Lighting can make or break an image. Sometimes there’s not enough light, leading to high ISO-induced noisy stills and clips. At other times the available light source may be in the wrong place, which limits our compositional choices. We don’t always have the time or the patience to lug a bulky professional lighting kit around with us which is why the SmallRig RM120 RGB Video Light could be the solution to many photographers and videographer's lighting requirements, especially when it comes to portrait photography.

SmallRig RM120: Key Features

Unlike COB (Chip on Board) LEDs, the RM120 has CCT mode which enables you to dial in a wide range of color temperatures in degrees Kelvin. This enables you to get the light emitted by the RM120 to match other light sources so there’s no colour clash. 

For example, the average color temperature of sunlight at midday is around 5600K. If the sun is used as the dominant key light you can set the RM120’s mode to CCT and dial in a matching color temperature of 5600K. You can then place the LED close to your subject’s face and use a second dial to adjust its output so that it fills in some of the harsher shadows caused by the key light (the sun).  If you’re shooting under artificial light (such as tungsten) it’s a quick and easy operation to dial the RM120 to emit a complementary color temperature of 3200K.

COB LED lights such as the SmallRig RM01 force you to produce more creative color outputs by adding a range of gels to the light. The RM120 has an HSI (Hue, Saturation, and Intensity) mode that you can toggle to at the tap of a button. This enables you to dial in a wide range of colors from any part of the spectrum.  You can also change colors with precision by dialing in separate RGBW (red, green, blue, and white) values. 

If you’re a video maker then the FX mode gives you access to creative animated specials effects such as a flickering candle or the obligatory emergency services flashing lamps - though the RM120 has a wider range of vehicle effects to summon - such as Police Car (alternating red and blue) to Ambulance (flashing blue) to Fire Truck (flashing red).

SmallRig RM120: Build & Handling

At first glance, the SmallRig RM120 looks like many other mini LED panels, but there’s more to its build than meets the eye. Once you peel off its white rubber diffuser (which is designed to make it emit a softer light) then you encounter a dark metal body (rather than the usual plastic build that you’d expect). This makes the RM120 more robust than many of its peers. I did drop the light onto a hard floor which caused my pulse to race, but I was relieved to discover that it was still fully functional. 

The business end of the light (where the LEDs are inserted) is made of plastic. On the rear of the metal body is a small color LCD screen. This is really handy at enabling you to see what mode you’ve selected, plus you can dial in various color temperatures or RGB colors with precision by referring to the values on the screen. 

On the right-hand side is a Mode button to change from CCT to HSI to RGBW to FX modes in a few taps, plus a couple of dials. One of the dials adjusts brightness while the other changes a host of values for various color hues or temperatures.  There’s also a dedicated on/off switch which is handy.

At the base of the RM120 is a thread so you can attach it to a stand or tripod if you want to go hands-free. A supplied dual-head cold shoe adapter enables you to attach the LED to a DSLR to act as a key light, or you can slot the RM120 into a smartphone rig such as the versatile SmallRig All-In-One Video Kit. 

SmallRig RM120: Performance

To test the RM120 I popped it in my kit bag on a photography walk through London.  I was walking with friends so there was always someone on hand to hold the LED and position it near another friend’s face. In bright sunlight, the RM120 wasn’t required, but when we encountered graffiti-covered tunnels it became the perfect accessory for a spontaneous portrait shoot. Due to its small size, we could get the RM120 nice and close to the subject. To keep the light out of the shot we got the camera close too which enabled a more intimate portrait shoot. 

The ability to dial in a range of colors encouraged us to experiment with more creative mood lighting, such as a 'green man' look. Because we could position the light by hand it encouraged me to go for a low-angle lighting position, adding upward shadows that created a sinister film-noir-style portrait.

I’ve also enjoyed using the RM120 as a light source for product and toy photography. When I want to change the color of the LED for a creative look I enjoy the fact that I can dial it in rather than having to rely on a more limited collection of physical coloured gels. I also used the RM120 when reviewing the PhotoSport X backpack. I needed some product shots of the bag but the gloomy forest I was in lacked any strong key light. By placing the RM120 just out of shot I was able to get cleaner and clearer pictures of the backpack, plus the key light helped bring out the shape of the bag via a contrasting mix of light and shade. 

SmallRig RM120: Verdict

The RM120 is something I’ll keep in my kit bag. It’s small enough to carry around yet emits a strong enough light source to add a key or fill light when required (though you do need to get it fairly close to your subject). The ability of the light to emit any color provides a springboard to a more creative photo shoot - as was evident when I gave the light to photographer friends on my test shoot. 

If you’re a videographer then you’ll find creative inspiration from its collection of animated FX. When it’s not in my kit bag the RM120 sits on my desk so I can have a quick and easy lighting set-up for my toy or product photography. If I didn’t already have this marvelous light I’d buy it. You won’t regret doing the same.

One popular topic for channels on YouTube is unboxing videos. Here people enjoy showing off a shiny new product by removing it from its box and then forensically exploring all of its features in minute detail. If you use available light in an unboxing video then your products can look washed out and flat (and therefore unprofessional). 

To achieve this, you'll need the best lights for YouTube. Key Features

Each of the three LEDs in the RM01 kit are COB (Chip on board) lights. Their closely packed LED chips create a bright and constant light source which is perfect for illuminating subjects in your video shoots.  The lights have a high CRI (Colour Rendering Index) of 95+, which enables them to reproduce accurate colors. They also have a high Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI) of 96, so you shouldn’t need to do any post-production color correction. 

Because COB lights can’t change their color output like standard SMD (Surface Mounted Divide) LEDs, SmallRig includes a collection of colored gels in the RM01 kit. Simply pop a red or green gel into a mount and then clip it onto the front of the lamp to create a colored light source.

The clip-on mount also contains four mini-magnets which enable you to attach other supplied accessories to a light, such as Barn Doors. You can adjust the Barn Doors to create a wider to narrower beam of light.

Other accessories in the kit include cone-shaped snoots (or blasters) that magnetically attach the front of the LEDs and create a narrower spotlight effect. There are also honeycomb accessories for each lamp that create a more focused and softer light source. You can also pop a white silicone diffuser over each LED to create a softer light source with less harsh shadows.

You can also modify the intensity of the light produced by each LED by tapping a button. There are four levels of intensity. Each light also comes with a mini tripod that can be extended to a height of 17cm. 

Build & Handling

At approximately $100 for three lights and a bundle of accessories, this is a budget lighting kit, so you’d expect it the lights to be made of plastic (as indeed they are). Each LED in the SmallRig kit is a similar size to the JOBY Beamo, but that lamp costs considerably more due to the metal components in its body. As LED lights don’t get as hot as conventional lamps the SmallRig RM01’s rugged matte plastic build doesn’t affect its performance. The RM01 lights can also be purchased individually.

The majority of the accessories in the kit are plastic too, but this makes them light enough to mount magnetically on the front of each lamp. In fact, you can mount both a honeycomb fame and bar doors to a light at the same time.  As the battery is built into each LED you can plug in a USB cable and leave it to charge (with no fiddly battery replacement required.)

Performance

The three mini-tripods that ship with the RM01 kit enable you to position the lights around your product to produce professional three-point lighting that ‘models’ the subject.  You can just the height of each tripod (between a range of 7.5 cm and 13 cm.) The tripods have adjustable ball heads so you can change the angle of each LED in the your point lighting set-up.  With the four-leaf barn doors attached to each stand-mounted LED your desktop will look like a mini Hollywood studio. 

We lit some sci-fi action figures with a range of coloured gels using a classic key, fill and backlight set-up and were impressed with the modelling and atmosphere that our three-point lighting set-up produced.  Check out this review’s supporting video to see our creative lighting set-up in action.

We also found the RM01 lights were also very useful when talking via our PC’s webcam. Normally that light from our computer’s screen creates a bland and flat-looking face with washed-out colors. By placing the RM01 LEDs strategically around our desktop we were able to create a brighter and more three-dimensional-looking face. The lights also look interesting when they are visible in the frame so they can ‘star’ in your Zoom call as well as produce a more flattering appearance.  

Each LED in the RM01 kit has a cold shoe head adaptor so you can take them out of the office to illuminate your location footage. You can use the cold shoe head to attach the LED to your camera or mount it on a taller tripod. This portability enables you to cast more light in a host of subjects.

Verdict

One of my hobbies is toy photography (check out @scifitoyphoto), so I’ve been using a wide range of LED lights to illuminate my plastic subjects. What I love about the RM01 LED kit is the fact that I can use it as a mini three-point lighting set-up and illuminate my toys as I would with real actors. Thanks to the magnetic accessories I can quickly change gels to change the mood of my shots or add a diffuser to reduce the presence of harsh shadows. When it comes to my home studio I think the RM01 kit is going to be a permanent addition to my desk (plus it also helps me look better via webcam!).

Tripods come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and weights. At one end of the spectrum, you have petite, portable smartphone tripods such as the Manfrotto PIXI Mini which will comfortably fit inside a typical camera bag. Then you have midrange tripods like the aluminum Benro TSL08A which are still portable and lightweight but can extend to head height to enable DSLR users to shoot locked-off long exposures or capture sharp shots in low-light locations. 

At the other end of the spectrum, you have heavy-duty tripods that are designed to meet the needs of videographers. These video tripods need to support heavier and bulkier camcorders and should also enable the operator to pan and tilt smoothly to capture a wide range of professional camera moves. 

SmallRig’s recently launched FreeBlazer Heavy-Duty Carbon Fiber AD-100 3989 Tripod is a heavy-duty fluid head tripod is an ungraded version of their SmallRig AD-100 3751 tripod released in 2022.

Key Features

The AD-100 3989 comes with the industry standard 75mm diameter bowl base that enables an attached camera to tilt and pan smoothly. As with all fluid-head tripods the resistance of the panning and tilting movement can be adjusted to enable faster or slower pans. 

The video head load of the tripod is 10kg, so the tripod can support a hefty camera and lens combination. An adjustable center spreader array enables you to get a compromise between a wider and more stable gap between the tripod’s legs or a narrower and taller deployment.  The center spreader’s three arms have units of measurement on them so you can ensure that the legs are spread evenly and with precision. These units of measurement are small but welcome attention to detail that’s evident in other areas of the AD-100 3989 (as we’ll explain later).

Build & Handling

Despite its heavy-duty status, the AD-100 is surprisingly light thanks to its 3K twill carbon-fiber leg sections. At 4kg you’ll be able to comfortably carry the tripod in its supplied bag (which also has a shoulder strap that you can attach which provides an alternative to the carrying handles). I found it easy to carry both the camera and tripod on my one-man test shoot (see this review’s supporting video).  

To make the tripod easier to store the pan and tilt handle is initially short and stumpy. Fortunately, you can lose the metal lathed clamp and telescope the handle to a more useful length for performing professional camera moves. The handle is a silicon grip so it’s easier to pan and tilt with it even if you have a sweaty hand! 

With many heavy-duty tripods, you need to attach the supplied tripod plate to the camcorder and then slide the plate through a groove on the tripod head. This can be a fiddly and time-consuming operation, especially if you’re eager to get on with filming rather than fiddling.

The AD-100 has a handy quick-release tripod plate that enables you to detach the camera from the tripod instantly with the press of a button. You can also lower the plate quickly onto the tripod head and the camcorder will attach with a satisfying click. You can then secure the attached camcorder by tightening a knob next to the quick-release plate.  The tripod head has been designed to be compatible with Manfrotto and DJI RS quick-release plates so you can move your camera from the AD-100 to a gimbal (or vice versa) quickly and easily.

I’ve been on shoots where I’ve had to rummage through my pockets to find a coin or keys to screw the tripod plate to my camera. Occasionally the camera will start to slip from its mounting and spoil a shot. Fortunately, the AD-100 has a little slot below the quick-release plate that accommodates a supplied Allen key. This key is designed to make sure that the tripod plate’s screws are firmly tightened. This welcome attention to detail is another example of SmallRig’s understanding of the needs of videographers.

Another nice touch is the three silicon grips that adorn the top of each leg. These give you a more comfortable and secure grip if you have to move the tripod with a heavy camera attached to it. You can also unscrew the telescopic arm and attach it to the left-hand side if you’re a left-handed camera operator.

Performance

One thing that I’ve always found tedious in relation to tripods is the multiple clasps or rings you need to loosen and then tighten to extend their legs to the desired height. A typical tripod (such as my Benro TSL08A) will have three rings per leg that enable you to extend the tripod’s height in installments.  It takes a while to rotate each ring to loosen it, extend the associated leg section and then tighten the ring with multiple rotations.  This means I have to loosen and then tighten 9 rings to get the Benro tripod set up!

The AD-100 on the other hand has one chunky golden clasp per leg! After unclipping the three clasps it’s a simple matter to lift the tripod to extend the legs to get the tripod to the desired height and then clip each clasp closed in a click!  Check out the video to see this time-saving mechanism in action.  The three gold plastic clasps do look a bit cheap and clunky but they do an effective job of locking the legs at the desired height. 

During my test shoot, I placed the AD-100 on a smooth wooden decking so I could film horses in an adjacent field from an elevated position. I was initially concerned that the feet at the base of the tripod’s legs would slip as I panned the camera, especially as the tripod is relatively light due to its carbon-fiber construction.  Fortunately, the textured rubber grips at the base of the tripod retained a firm hold on the smooth wooden flooring and it remained firmly in position throughout the shoot.  A quick-release button on each leg enables the removal of the rubber feet to reveal two spikes that give the tripod extra purchase on more rugged terrain.

A dampening dial (or ring) enabled me to adjust the resistance of the panning movement to change the speeds of my pans. Rotating it left (clockwise) towards a + icon increased the resistance of the fluid head which was perfect for capturing smooth slow pans. By rotating the ring counter-clockwise I could reduce the resistance and capture faster smooth pans. I was able to adjust the tension of the tilt too, enabling me to capture more complex moves such as a simultaneous pan, tilt, and zoom from a close tree to a distant horse (see supporting video). If your tripod is set up on uneven ground then an adjustable ball can be loosened and rotated until a spirit level indicates that your camera is level.

Verdict

The AD-100 is a useful asset for videographers who need to perform complex camera moves using a classic fluid-head tripod. Thanks to its carbon-fiber legs it is comfortable to carry and despite its relatively lightweight status, it’s capable of carrying out heavy-duty maneuvers with larger cameras and camcorders. Little touches to detail such as a built-in allen key compartment are very welcome and the ability quickly deploy the tripod to the desired height with the minimum of clamp-fiddling gives it an extra star!

The best camera rigs can be used to turn your normal camera into a video powerhouse, as they give you extra mounting points for accessories and a better grip, while some also offer stabilization. They should also allow better handheld use, and protect your camera from knocks and bumps.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage features

SmallRig's Retro Handheld Cage Kit can help you to reach low shooting and filming angles with the Fujifilm X-T5, thanks to its ergonomic leather handle that gives you a better grip from above. The kit itself includes the main cage – made from metal – with a top handle and an HDMI & USB-C cable clamp, as well as a hot shoe cover and a shutter button adapter. I'll come onto design and handling later, but the overall style is very much steampunk.

It features several accessory mounting points, including a 1/4"-20 threaded hole, 3/8"-16 threaded hole, ARRI 3/8"-16 locating hole, cold shoe mount and NATO rail.  The camera cage can also be mounted onto Arca-Swiss tripods using the Arca-Swiss quick-release plate at the bottom.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage Build & handling

The SmallRig Retro Cage for the Fujifilm X-T5 isn't a typical all-black photography rig designed to blend into the camera and shooting environment. Instead, it makes a statement and leans into the classic vibe of the camera it was designed for. The cage itself is made from metal and has a cowhide leather grip (sorry vegans), it's heavily styled, and by that, I don't mean that it weighs a lot – simply that it's got a look that some will love and others might not. 

Its retro design is inspired by vintage fashion, and the black titanium cage features bronze edges and gold rivets. The metal itself feels well-made and durable, while it has the intentional appearance of rust in places – thanks to a "distressed" finish that means each cage is unique.

On the cage itself, there's a well-positioned shutter button, a hot shoe cover with a small bubble level, and then several accessory mounting points for video lights, microphones and more. The handle is screwed on to give a comfortable handholding experience, and crucially, it doesn't cover the hot shot mount and gives you enough clearance so that you can access other areas of the camera.

The screw-on USB-C and HDMI cable clamp is used to give you access to the camera interface without having to remove the rig. The balance of the handle is satisfying, too, so the camera doesn't feel top-heavy during use. This rig comes in several separate parts and requires minimal assembly to set it up for use. You get an Allen wrench in the box for this purpose, so you don't need any extra tools to get started.

Personally, I think the design of the SmallRig Retro Cage is pretty cool and different enough from its other cages (like this Canon EOS R5 version, on Amazon) to stand out and suit the X-T5. But it's something to bear in mind if the style of your gear is important – and this doesn't fit it.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage performance

The SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage is built to make handheld shooting with the Fujifilm X-T5 easier and smoother. It does both of these things effectively and is easy to put together and take apart again when you want to remove it from the camera. However, it is also quite easy to lose small parts of the cage kit like the shutter button adapter, so it's a good idea to keep them in a zipped part of your camera bag when you're not using them. A bag would have been nice for storing the rig, but maybe this is added weight that you don't really need.

The shutter button adapter does a perfectly good job of pressing the shutter down – although personally, I preferred to go without it – and the HDMI cable clamp makes a reliable connection when the camera is linked up to an external monitor to prevent cable pull-out or damage to the HDMI connection port in the event of an accident.

Unlike many plastic rigs on the market, this SmallRig cage is made from sturdy metal, which helps to secure the camera in place and stop it from rocking. Its strength also means that you can support accessories very comfortably and still perform smooth movements for a video like pans, tilts and cranes.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage verdict

The SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage Kit for the Fujifilm X-T5 is slick, secure and lightweight. It fits snugly around the camera and keeps close to the body’s form factor, which means that there's no rattling around while shooting.

The style of the cage won't suit everyone, but I like the striking design and feel it matches the retro aesthetic of the X-T5 well. There are enough mounting options for adding common accessories while you're shooting stills and videos, and the rig can handle them all. It's more expensive than a standard black rig, so you are paying more for build quality, but if you want a stylish rig to match your X-T5, it won't let you down.

As a video professional since the early 90s, I’ve used classic lighting kits such as Arri ‘Redheads’ to provide classic three-point lighting setups for interviews. These lights used conventional bulbs (or lamps) that would occasionally blow and spoil a take (which is why they featured a protective mesh to stop shards of glass spraying the set). Modern LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights such as the SmallRig RC 350D COB LED Video Light don’t need to have bulbs replaced, making them safer and more reliable than traditional video lighting kits.

I’ve tested and reviewed several LED lights for Digital Camera World, from the tiny JOBY Beamo that’s a perfect lighting accessory for smartphone content creators on the go to the more expensive ZHIYUN Fiveray F100 light stick that boasts a range of useful special effect presets. The SmallRig RC 350D COB LED Video Light blows all of these LEDs out of the water in relation to its power, performance, and budget-blowing price tag.

This LED is aimed squarely at professional video makers who need to have a powerful key light to illuminate interviewees or add special lighting effects to complement the performance of actors. The RC 350D that we tested is part of a new wave of SmallRig COB video lights – the RC 450B, RC 450D, and the RC 350B (more on this comparable model later).

SmallRig RC 350D features

The SmallRig RC 350D is designed to give professional video makers optimum performance thanks to double-sided, six-layer coated front glass that has a transmittance of more than 97% in the visible wavelength range, ensuring lossless light flux. The 350D boasts a maximum illuminance of an eye-searing 149,000 Lux (far exceeding the output of portable battery-powered lights, such as the ZHIYUN F100’s 20,708 Lux output.)

Indeed during my test shoot in a TV studio, I didn’t need to increase the light’s output beyond 43% as this caused my subject’s highlights to become over-exposed (see our supporting video). This powerful performance puts the 350D in the heavyweight category compared to the featherweight output of other LEDs that I’ve reviewed previously on this site. 

Another key feature that shows the light is aimed at professionals is its ability to faithfully reproduce accurate colors from illuminated subjects thanks to high scores of  +97 on the TV Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI ) and +96 on the Color Rendering Index (CRI) (though to be fair the far cheaper ZHIYUN F100 also boasts these color rendition scores!).  

On the downside, the 350D has a fixed daylight color temperature of 5600 degrees Kelvin. You’ll need an alternative (but more expensive) model such as the bi-color RC 450B if you need to adjust color temperature between a range of 2700K - 6500K.

When recording drama or interviews the professional filmmaker needs complete silence on the set. The 350D boasts quiet cooling fans with an intelligent temperature control algorithm that improves heat dissipation and produces a mere 28dB sound within 1 meter of the light, so there’s no danger of whirring fans spoiling a take.  Another key feature is the 9 special effect lighting presets that you can trigger with a press of the FX button. SmallRig RC 350D build & handling

The RC 350D COB LED Video Light has an eye-catching futuristic look thanks to the streamlined aerodynamic shape of its black and grey curves. It’s constructed on a mix of metal and non-inflammable material.  It ships with a useful carry case that contains all the components you’ll need including an attachable reflector that channels the LED’s output into a beam of light wide enough to illuminate a typical ‘talking head’ subject. 

The fully laden case weighs in at a manageable 7.9 KG (though I did appreciate being able to park close to the studio where I tested the LED as I also had to carry a sturdy lighting stand and a camera bag). To save storage space in the carry case the adjustable head that attaches the lamp to the lighting stand is detachable (rather than being a permanent part of the light body). 

This head has a hinge that enables you to adjust the angle of the light (though 220 degrees). The head’s hinge feels very stiff and you really have to push hard to make the light tilt.  This secure damping system is a deliberate feature as the resistance of the hinge is designed to make the light stay in place. This will re-assure lighting professionals who may have suffered loss or damage in the past due to a light tilting or flopping on its stand during a shoot. There is also a locking mechanism on the hinge to make sure the light stays angled correctly which is the type of belt and braces approach to kit safety that a professional will welcome. 

SmallRig RC 350D performance

The light is controlled by a simple LCD panel on the rear. There are two key buttons to tinker with. INT controls the intensity of the light’s output and FRQ controls the frequency of special effects (such as the burst speed of Paparazzi flash guns or the pulsing glow of the Breath preset effect). An FX button lets you toggle through the 9 preset special lighting effects. 

Presets such as TV bathe the actor in the flickering light from an offscreen dial and there’s the obligatory lighting FX preset that you’ll also find on the ZHIYUN F100 and the Nanlite PavoTube T8-7X. Unlike the two cheaper LEDs I’ve just mentioned the SmallRig RC 350D COB LED can’t change the colors that it emits, so that does limit the effectiveness of its effects. 

We also tested the SmallRig COB LED Video Light Control Panel which is an accessory that you need to purchase separately. This contains an identical LCD control panel to the one on the rear of the 350D and with INT and FRQ buttons. It also costs an extra CCT button which enables you to tweak color temperature on compatible SmallRig LEDS such as the RC 450B. The 350D that we tested has a fixed daylight color temperature of 5600K which made the CCT button redundant.  The Control Panel ships with a clamp that you can attach to the lighting stand. 

The clamp has an adjustable magnetic head so you can attach and angle the control panel to suit your needs. The panel also has a 3-meter cable so you can operate the 350D from a distance if desired. In theory, you can also control the 350D via the SmallGoGo app but we failed to get our smartphone to connect to the lamp despite multiple attempts (and by using different smartphones).

SmallRig RC 350D verdict

The beautifully designed SmallRig RC 350D LED kicks out more light than anything we’ve reviewed before and yet still operates quietly thanks to its dual fan cooling system. The high price aims it squarely at the video professional who needs accurate colour reproduction, though its fixed daylight colour temperature of 5600K might lead one to look at the 450B instead (though that will cost you $300/£250 more).  

Subtle features such as a locking mechanism on the power plug and the detachable cushioning stand adaptor give the 350D an attention to detail (and safety) that professionals will welcome. Its special effect presets will be useful for daring content producers, though they lack the colour changes produced by far cheaper LEDs.

The best mini tripods aim to give you the stability of a full-size tripod, while being lighter, more compact, and easier to carry. Typically, they weigh just a few hundred grams, and you can easily slip them into a pocket or inside a camera bag. They also cost much less than full-sized tripods. But, of course, their stunted size does mean that they don't offer the shooting height of a taller tripod – hence why they are often used on a table, wall, or other sturdy raised surface. They can open up all sorts of possibilities, including long exposures, group selfies, and more. Some are multi-functional and can be converted to a handgrip or selfie stick, offering extra functionality and flexibility when you're out and about with your camera.

It's important to note that mini tripods are also only suitable for lighter camera kit – think a mirrorless with a kit lens, compact camera, or an action cam, rather than a pro-level DSLR with a monster zoom attached. But they are not just for cameras, and are also supremely useful for supporting accessories like off-camera flashguns, light panels, or microphones. Below you'll find my pick of the best mini tripods available today, and precisely which is best for you will depend on how and what you shoot. Some have bendable legs that can cling to protruding objects or sit on uneven surfaces, others have extendable legs or an adjustable central column for extra height, and several come with a ball head for precise angles and positioning. Best mini tripod for portability

Given Manfrotto's sterling reputation in the tripod market, it makes sense that the firm's mini support would also be impressive – and the Manfrotto PIXI is just that. It's a fairly standard mini tripod in many ways; small enough to slip into a jacket pocket or small bag and capable of holding up to 1kg of kit. It also adds a handy ball head into the mix with 360° of rotation and a simple push-button secure-and-release mechanism. However, it doesn't tilt up by more than 35°, making astrophotography impracticable.

I was impressed most of all by the build quality of the Manfrotto PIXI – its aluminum legs are smoothly curved in a way that just feels premium. What's more, when they close, they form a single rounded column that transforms the PIXI into a pretty serviceable camera grip, which is extra useful for video.

Most flexible mini tripod

The Freewell Vlogpod is a tabletop mini-tripod with flexible legs, designed to be wrapped around various objects, such as posts and branches, as well as used on flat surfaces. The secret to its flexibility is a seven-strand aluminum core inside each leg, encased in durable ABS plastic and polyamide glass fiber. This construction allows the legs to be bent into your desired shape while maintaining the rigidity needed to support a payload of up to 3kg, which is plenty for a DSLR or mirrorless with a standard or wide-angle lens.

But it's not just for cameras. Underneath the sturdy camera mount is a spring-loaded cradle that holds your phone securely. This clever convertible mount sits atop a removable ball head that offers 360-degree panning and has a cutout for vertical shooting.

I was particularly impressed with the Vlogpod's ability to hold its shape firmly, even with heavier loads. The ball head is smooth to operate and secure once locked. While the tripod lacks a center column for height extension, this is compensated for by its ability to attach to elevated objects in the environment. It's a bit too bulky to carry in a pocket, but this is a necessary trade-off for its strength and versatility, and its 456g weight and overall strength make it a good and comfortable-to-hold solution for a flexible tripod.

Best value 2-in-1 mini tripod

The K&F Concept 62-inch 2-in-1 Selfie Stick Tripod offers a surprising amount of functionality for its low price point, acting as both an ultra-tall selfie stick and a lightweight tripod. Constructed from a blend of aluminum and plastic, it features a sleek 'carbon fiber-look' aesthetic, and the build quality is surprisingly impressive for an inexpensive accessory. Its standout physical feature is a seven-section telescopic center column that reaches an impressive maximum height of 62.1 inches (157cm). The downside is that, when folded, it measures 13.9 inches (352mm), which is rather long, but still manageable for backpacks.

At its lowest height, it is sturdy enough to support a small mirrorless camera (up to its 4.4lb/2kg limit). However, raising the telescopic column introduces significant wobble, making it less ideal for heavy equipment or windy outdoor conditions. If you're looking for a versatile tabletop tripod that isn't just confined to a tabletop, look no further than the Benro Tablepod Flex. Including a set of flexible legs inside the solid legs is ingenious, as it means you can attach it to any surface when you’re out and about. You can also configure the legs to form a monopod/selfie stick if you should need some extra reach and it comes with a mobile phone adapter so it can be used with either a smartphone, compact camera, or small mirrorless.

If you often use accessories such as a light or a mic, you'll be pleased to hear it comes with two accessory arms so you can attach different devices easily. It's a little on the expensive side for a tabletop tripod. But considering all the well-thought-out features, it's worth spending a bit more.

The KraftGeek Variety Tripod is a highly adaptable accessory designed specifically for content creators, including vloggers, influencers, and TikTokers. Best mini tripod with remote

The SmallRig SR-RG2 Multifunctional Wireless Shooting Grip is a handheld grip, selfie stick, and tabletop tripod that features a detachable Bluetooth remote control that not only fires your camera's shutter but can zoom in and out with compatible lenses and activate other programmable camera functions too.

While the center column is extendable for use as a selfie stick, it does not extend particularly far and cannot be extended when used in tripod mode, so the shooting height is not adjustable in this case.

The SmallRig SR-RG2 is a convenient, multifunctional support for photographers and videographers, and I was particularly impressed with its wireless remote's functionality, which offers far more control and flexibility than many dedicated remote shutter releases.

Best mini tripod for taking selfies

The Neewer TP38 is a two-in-one desktop mini-tripod and selfie stick that is designed to support both cameras and smartphones. It features a clever and versatile camera plate and phone cradle, which eliminates the need for separate attachments and makes it suitable for photographers frequently switching between using a phone and a dedicated camera.

The robust build quality feels more durable compared to some other tabletop tripod/selfie stick combinations, and the head is well-engineered, supporting a decent load rating. However, the device only offers a limited degree of extension via its non-locking telescopic center column.

I was impressed with the Neewer TP38's compact design and its usefulness in various shooting situations, including vlogging, live streaming, and general photography. Best mini tripod for heavy payloads

Able to hold as much as 10kg in weight, the Leofoto Ranger LS-223C can hold its own alongside many larger tripods. That's more than enough to hold a mirrorless setup or mid-sized DSLR, giving you real versatility from a tripod that slips easily into the bottom of a backpack.

It's pleasingly sturdy, with three leg sections, and has plenty of scope for precise angle adjustments. Its maximum height is about 12in (30cm), which is pretty good for a tabletop tripod, and is usually sold with a 360º ballhead. In my tests, I found it a great option for low-level shots of landscapes – and loved that it was much lighter than my usual travel tripod when stashed in my backpack.

However, in comparison to other tabletop models, the main drawback is its weight. It's significantly heavier than other tripods on this list, and arguably heavier than a tabletop tripod should be. However, if you want a sturdy mini tripod that can take a heavy camera set-up, this is a great option.

Best mini tripod for on-the-go content creators

If you're an on-the-go content creator, travel blogger or even a fitness coach, I can see the advantages of the KoalaPod: what you can wrap its flexible legs around is pretty much limitless. You can, of course, use it as a standard tabletop tripod, or as a small selfie stick for those moments when you want just a little more background than you can achieve with your arm's length.

Despite its bendy legs, it feels more secure than you might imagine. However, I wouldn't trust it to take the weight of my Sony A7 III with a lens attached, even though it's rated as able to take such a weight. But for smaller-bodied cameras with lightweight lenses, it's perfect.

Best tripod alternative

The Platypod Delta is a mini-tripod alternative for situations where traditional tripods are not practical or permitted. It is essentially a flat, triangular sheet of aluminum alloy with retractable legs, offering a stable base for low-level photography.

At just 6mm thin, it is supremely portable, and easily slips into a pocket or can hang off a camera bag with its supplied carabiner. It only takes seconds to flip out its legs and can support a beefy 10kg load rating. A supplied strap enables it to be attached to posts or trees, and there's even a bottle opener stamped in. However, you will need to use it with a ball head, which does take away from the 'packs flat' aesthetic somewhat, and you can't adjust the shooting height.

The Platypod Delta isn't a replacement for a traditional tripod, but is invaluable for photographers facing situations where traditional tripods are not feasible, offering a practical solution for low-angle shots.

This professional video light from SmallRig is intended for videographers and filmmakers, optimized for on-location shooting at official sets in a dark studio environment. However, I am the furthest thing from being a professional filmmaker, and a complete novice when it comes to videography and video editing.

So for these reasons, I decided to review the SmallRig RC 220B Bi-color video light in the context of photographic use, with the intention to approach this review in the assessment of its practicality as a tool for photographers and still work, rather than its intended use as a videography and studio companion. Photographers need top-quality studio professional lighting rigs too, right?

SmallRig currently offers this video light at a price of $369 (around £336.90 / AU$531), which is considerably more affordable than similar products available from competitors such as Rotolight and Godox. Other COB LED lighting equipment and accessories from SmallRig's extensive catalog are also reasonably priced for both the professional videographer as well as for those first entering the field. 

Most recently I had the opportunity to put the SmallRig RC 220B to the test during a last minute newborn baby shoot with my three week old nephew. The nature of this shoot meant that I needed a light source that was powerful enough, yet not too blinding for the baby. 

It needed to be able to deliver results quietly and subtly without being obtrusive, which this light was brilliantly suited for, having been designed and intended for use on movie sets where silent shooting is an essential feature. 

You can read all about the experience of my first newborn baby shoot and how it didn't exactly go to plan - but this was of no fault to the SmallRig RC 220B. For now, we'll focus on how the point-source video light performed during its debut test shoot with the subjects of a goldendoodle and a plastic bonsai tree.

SmallRig RC 220B: Key Features

The RC 220B offers color temperature adjustment and 9 built-in light effects that include: Paparazzi, Firework, Lightning, Fault Bulb, TV, Breath, Flash, Party, and Flame. These can be changed using the back display screen on the light, as well as via bluetooth remote control with the smartphone SmallGoGo App, available on both iOS and Android Google Play app stores.

It has a built-in ultra-quiet active cooling fan system that automatically triggers when the temperature rises above 60°C or exceeds 140°F. A very faint noise can be heard from the light (even when using a softbox) when the fan is active, but this may be because I was sat on the floor directly in front of the light and in very close proximity to it, whereas in a studio or larger space I imagine this would be virtually silent.  

The RC 220B boasts stepless dimming controlled via two adjustable knobs at the back of the light alongside the integrated display screen, to ensure that you achieve the precise meter of light needed for the brief. 

The video light is extremely easy to use and operate, boasting the latest in COB light technology, and the high CRI rating and color fidelity make it perfect for professional use as well as confidence and certainty in still work and photography that your colors are accurate and subject well lit. 

Included with the light is a high-reflectance circular hyper reflector, and at a distance of 1 meter (3.3ft.) away, the center illuminance and beam from the reflector reaches an output of  84,500 lux at 5600K!  This power alone is a key feature of the light and improvement upon its predecessor, the slightly less powerful SmallRig RC 120B, and the variable color output is ideal for use in mixed light situations. 

SmallRig also included the RA V1 V-Mount Battery Plate which is super handy and conveniently attached to my light stand in seconds to allow for convenient battery-powered supply to the light, instead of having to use the included power supply adapter. This arrived in a neat box with inner filling to protect the plate, and with the required power cable included. 

SmallRig RC 220B: Build and handling

The rig part of the light has a convenient built-in umbrella hole, as well as a sturdy and robust integrated handle for a more secure grip and easier directing of the light source. The SmallRig RC 220B is designed and fitted with an industry standard Bowens mount that is compatible with most light-control accessories including reflectors and softboxes from a multitude of brands.

Included with the SmallRig RC 220B was an extremely luxurious high-quality portable storage bag with compartments to safely house each element of the video light. A gray carrying case was also supplied with the RA-R6090 Rectangular Softbox (sold seperately) that I used with the light, making each piece of equipment travel friendly and easily portable due to the ideal storage SmallRig provided with the products. 

The softbox was fairly easy to assemble, having to lift each strain of the light upwards until it clicked into place, and then attaching both parts of the white velcro material into the softbox, the smaller sheet followed by the larger. The difficult part was de-assembling the softbox which I found nearly impossible until my partner stepped in to help. The mechanism requires you to lift up the inner poles even higher past the locking point for it to then release slowly folding into itself. 

The back of the light features a high quality display, with two clickable and rotatable knobs for adjusting frequency, output and color temperature, with a dimmer control, and effects. Operating the light couldn't have been more simple, especially for a photographer like myself with only basic knowledge and limited transferable videography skills. 

Turning the light on is controlled by a simple flip switch on the back of the unit, and in addition I spotted what looks like  a small reset button. The instruction manual provided with the light unfortunately had very limited language options, and the app was also in Chinese! So this meant I had to do a fair bit of research online to discover what each button and function of the video light was intended for. 

The overall feel and build quality of this video light felt robust and extremely sturdy, though it did give me some doubts that my own Fudesy stand (purchased on Amazon as part of a backdrop bundle) would be strong enough to support the weight of the light, and thankfully it was! SmallRig do not supply a stand with the light which may be important to note. 

Having never owned a professional studio/video light this was a little surprising to me that a crucial accessory wasn't part of the package, although I guess professional videographers or studio owners would be expected to have a few stands lying around, I guess the same way that a tripod wouldn't be included when you purchase a camera. 

SmallRig RC 220B: Performance

The overall performance of this light exceeded my expectations, it was astoundingly bright when I first powered it up, and even when lowering the frequency and dimming the light it still felt too powerful to be used without a softbox, let alone with a directional hyper-reflective beam. 

The power of this light is truly unmatched by anything I've used or tested before and lit up the space beautifully once I had the settings narrowed down to a fine art. 

Again, in a much larger and open space than my conservatory, in professional film and studio environments, I imagine this video light would truly have its time to shine (pun intended) and demonstrate its full-blown potential. 

That being said, I still really enjoyed using the light and it will no doubt make an exceptional addition to my kit and really up my portrait game next time I have an indoor studio photography session booked.

As previously mentioned, the light can be controlled via an app, and while mine for some strange reason defaulted to Chinese on my Samsung S21 Ultra, it still worked seamlessly and required virtually no setup as Bluetooth was already active on the RC 220B, so I simply had to input an email address and verification code, and then it was all set up and good to go. 

The app made things much easier when operating light adjustments when not standing directly behind the light or facing the display screen, meaning I was free to move around accordingly without needing to work the light from one stuck position. The app even allowed me to update the light's firmware through Bluetooth and was super quick and easy.

For the very first initial test shoot, I had the light facing downwards towards the floor where my Goldendoodle pup Tilly was sitting patiently. Treats were necessary to keep her still as I shot using my Canon EOS 5DS. I experimented using a higher and lower frequency and intensity, and gradually adjusted the light temperature to be a little warmer and found this worked best for my subject. 

For the second test, I set up just a few meters away in the kitchen where my subject became a plastic bonsai tree. This allowed me the opportunity to really test out the light's modes and functions without scaring away my dog from flashing rhythmic lights. 

The light during this test lit up the kitchen when I purposefully left the artificial lights off, and reflected behind the subject bouncing off the window behind the tree and lit it perfectly. I again used the softbox for this test as I found the beam light to be a little too overpowering for what I needed. 

The third test involved a newborn baby shoot with my nephew, where the SmallRig RC 220B performed excellently. It was also my first time transporting this light out of the house and the second time around I found it much easier to assemble and set up faster, and the app was super helpful at letting me shoot while essentially controlling the light hands-free.

This light was intended for video use after all, so here's a clip I captured demo-ing the different color temperatures and light affects that this SmallRig powerhouse can offer. If filming a scene based on a stormy night, this light meets the brief flawlessly. 

SmallRig RC 220B: Verdict

Following the release of its predecessor, the SmallRig RC 120B COB Light, this beefier RC 220B video light packs more power, with a higher Lux output, greater power consumption, and being a little on the heavier side. Other specifications such as the TLCI, CRI, Radio Frequency, and app capabilities however are all exactly the same.

So what makes the RC 220B worth the upgrade for those that have the very slightly older model (released just six months ago)? Firstly, it's powerful enough to be used as a key light, and when paired with the hyper reflector, it creates a strong intense central beam with softer edges, that beautifully lights the subject from a distance. 

Being the first generation point-source LED light of SmallRig's, this video light has virtually no faults found from my time testing it and truly exceeded my expectations. The RC 220B (bi-color) was launched with its sister, the SmallRig RC 220D (daylight) with no CT adjustment features. The SmallRig RC 220B costs $369.00 (around £336.90 / AU$531), whereas the RC 220D sells for a $329 (around £283.50 / AU$485).

While this light is undoubtedly excellent, if you're a photographer looking to purchase a light for your regular setup - the extra equipment needed such as a stand, additional softboxes if the reflector isn't your style, and V-mount battery if you want to avoid long hanging cables - makes the price of this COB light much less budget-friendly for an entry-level videographer or stills shooter new to the field. 

If you don't need the variable color temperature feature, then it might be worth considering the daylight version RC 220D instead to save a few dollars, otherwise, this light is superb overall with no faults to be found and would make a great asset to your kit collection, the ideal companion for portraiture and creative videography.
