One of the biggest advantages of signing up to Amazon Prime is the most obvious: you get free next-day delivery on thousands of items, whether it's filters or photography props, and if you need anything for a shoot last-minute it's definitely the quickest place to go.

Amazon Prime's premium delivery has saved me countless times, and I love that you can select to only view items that have Prime delivery. If you order early enough in the day, and depending on where you live, you can even get same-day delivery on some items – which makes Prime a godsend!

2. Discounts on Prime Day

You read that right, if you're an Amazon Prime member, you can get great discounts on a whole range of Amazon products during the two-day sale – but you will only be able to see and take advantage of these deals if you have signed up to Prime.

That's why I recommend taking out an Amazon Prime 30-day trial for free. This means that you won't be charged (make sure you cancel before 30 days!) but can take full advantage of the massive savings to be had this Prime Day.

3. Amazon Photos

All Amazon Prime members get unlimited photo storage and up to 5GB of video storage with Amazon Photos. I didn’t even know about Amazon Photos until recently, and I have no idea why Amazon doesn’t shout about it more. Unlike Google Drive, where you’re limited to 15GB, you can upload all your precious memories to Amazon Photos and never run out of space.

This is the perfect solution for photographers who want to back up their work on cloud storage without having to pay anything extra for Dropbox or the best cloud storage for photos.

4. Prime Video

As well as free next-day delivery, being an Amazon Prime member also gives you access to Prime Video – which includes hundreds of films, series, and Amazon Originals to keep you entertained. Considering that Netflix starts at $9.99 / £6.99 a month for the most basic plan, where you can only watch things in 480p, Prime Video is pretty good value for the money.

There are some huge titles available to watch for free, such as Lady Gaga's House of Gucci, the critically acclaimed Bong-Joon Ho film Parasite and the photography documentary Finding Vivian Maier among many more.

Amazon Prime Video can be a brilliant place to find inspiration for shoots and, if you're a videographer, ideas on color grading styles, camera shots, and film angles.

5. Prime Music

If you don’t want to pay for multiple services such as Spotify and Netflix, an Amazon Prime membership also includes music streaming with Prime Music. It’s a little different from Amazon Music, in that there are only 2 million songs to choose from rather than the much larger 100 million, and you won't be able to listen to full albums by your favorite artists. But if that doesn't bother you, there is still a lot going for it.

(If you want the full thing, Prime users can sign up for Amazon Music Unlimited for less money than non-members.)

Many professional photographers cite listening to music as one of their inspirations – particularly when it comes to getting in the zone for the editing phase of their work – so why not dig in and find yourself the right playlist to process your photos to?

6. Free Deliveroo Plus for a year (UK Only)

Amazon has teamed up with Deliveroo to give all new Amazon Prime members a free year of Deliveroo Plus, which means that delivery is free when you spend over £25.

You have to sign up for the deal via the Deliveroo website, rather than through Amazon, but it’s well worth doing, considering some restaurants can now charge as much as £4.99 for delivery!

When you need to power through a particularly heavy editing session or find yourself shooting on the road, this could be a great perk to have.

7. Prime Reading

Every month, you can read a different selection of books on your Kindle or smartphone for absolutely nothing, with Prime Reading. While you don’t get quite the same satisfaction as reading an actual book, it's perfect for traveling when baggage restrictions mean you can't carry the extra weight of books.

Amazon has officially confirmed the return of its Big Spring Sale for 2026, and this time the focus shifts firmly to the US, where the seven-day event is set to run from March 25 through March 31.

Positioned as one of the first major retail moments of the year, the sale brings together a broad mix of seasonal essentials, everyday staples, and technology deals, offering shoppers an early opportunity to refresh their photography gear as the new season begins.

What makes the Big Spring Sale particularly relevant for photographers is its timing. As the light improves and outdoor shooting conditions become more appealing, there’s a natural pull to refresh gear, whether that’s investing in a new camera body, picking up an extra lens, or simply replacing well-used accessories. Amazon leans into this seasonal shift with a broad mix of deals spanning imaging gear alongside wider tech and lifestyle categories.

With the Holiday Season upon us, you'll no doubt be in a mild panic deliberating just what on earth to get for your nearest and dearest. Well, I'm a photographer, and this is what's on my wish list! I reckon you can't go too far wrong with something similar for the hard-to-please photographer in your life.

I'm being realistic here. I'm not listing top-of-the-line pro cameras or expensive lenses; those are for me to scrimp and save for! No, these are affordable pressies, and while I've earmarked the specific gifts that I want, I've linked to the wider buying guides they appear in so you can select the perfect option for whoever you're buying for to unwrap on December 25…

Everyone wants a compact camera right now, and this is one of the smartest recommendations on the market: the Panasonic Lumix ZS99, which is called the TZ99 in the United Kingdom.

The camera has been discounted in both regions, with a $55 saving in the US and a smaller but still welcome £20 reduction in the UK.

I've no idea how long this Cyber Monday camera deal will hang around, so if it's of interest I recommend adding it to your cart ASAP…

Panasonic puts point-and-shoot power in the palm of your hand or your pocket, with the Lumix ZS99 / TZ99 (review) – an update of the company's trusty ZS100 / TZ100 compact camera from a few years ago.

While its small 1/2.3-inch sensor does limit the scope of its image quality, this camera nonetheless delivers very solid 20.3MP photographs (with the option for RAW capture) and 4K 30p or FullHD 60p video. It also offers high-speed video up to 240p, if you ratchet down to 640x480.

The headline feature of the ZS99 / TZ99 is the mammoth 24-720mm equivalent zoom lens, optically engineered by Leica. This gives you a truly ridiculous amount of reach, covering wide-angle landscape vistas all the way to telephoto reach for capturing faraway subjects.

It's backed by a powerful five-axis optical image stabilization system, which compensates for camera shake to keep your photos and video nice and steady – which is utterly essential, when shooting all the way out at 720mm!

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are supposed to be single-day shopping events – but Fujifilm is keeping some Black-Friday-level pricing going through January 14.

With trends making some Fujifilm gear hard to find in stock, the discounts are surprisingly decent, though they exclude the trendiest models like the Fujifilm X100VI.

According to Fujifilm's UK webstore, the deals on X Series and GFX last through January 14, 2026. Instax deals don't list an end date.

Some deals, like £200 off the Fujifilm X Half, were too good to last and have now expired. Others aren't quite as steep as on Black Friday, but many of the discounts on X series and GFX series are expected to last into the New Year.

Sale prices on lenses seem to have ended, but Fujifilm's £85 cashback offer on X series lenses is still good through January 14.

As is the norm, the pricier the list price, the bigger the discounts, as pricier telephoto lenses and medium format gear see the steepest drops, including up to £500 cashback on medium format gear.

Is it worth waiting until Black Friday instead?

Not necessarily. While Black Friday sometimes offers deeper discounts, Prime Day, and those deals that follow it are far more focused - and for camera gear, it often matches or even beats Black Friday prices.

If you see a good deal on something you’ve been eyeing, don’t wait until November - my recommendation is to buy it now and avoid possible disappointment later!

Looking at hobbies is a great way to brainstorm gift ideas – and photography is no exception. The problem is that photographers can often be a picky bunch, and if you’re going to buy anything from a lens to filters, you’ll need to know specifics like the lens mount and filter thread size. And that’s not to mention the fact that cameras and lenses are hardly affordable gift ideas.

That’s why I think the SmallRig RF 10 C LED Photography Flashlight makes the perfect affordable gift for photographers, as well as videographers and content creators. I’m not going to pretend that because I want the SmallRig photography flashlight, every photographer wants one. But the flashlight has a few different features that allow the light to cross into several genres. A key feature is that the flashlight is a constant light source and not a flash. First, makes it easier to use for beginners. I have some flash gobos, but they’re hard to get them lined up just right. A constant light source is easier to use.

But because the light is a flashlight and not a strobe, the flashlight can be used for both photos and video. That means the light makes a great gift for not just photographers, but videographers and content creators as well.

The other reason that the SmallRig Photography Flashlight makes an ideal gift is that you don’t have to know what’s in the recipient's camera bag in order to choose one. You don’t have to worry about compatibility with lens mount, favorite brands, or filter thread sizes.

While this flashlight is a highly flexible tool that doesn’t need to conform to the same brand or mounts, constant lights aren’t as powerful as flashes. If the photographer on your list is always working in bright sunlight or waxes poetically about the advantages of strobe lights, then you should probably keep searching for the perfect gift idea.

The compact camera trend has driven up demand in a big way – and prices with it. Finding a discount on a compact camera is becoming exceedingly hard to do. But the start of Amazon Prime Big Deal Days has brought a significant price drop on a popular Sony budget compact camera: The Sony ZV-1F.

The Sony ZV-1F is a compact camera geared for vlogging with its 4K video and flip-out screen. But the larger one-inch sensor, bright f/2 lens, and quick autofocus that makes the camera excellent for vlogging is handy for still photography too. There are better compact cameras, but few offer a larger one-inch sensor at this price point like the Sony ZV-1F.

The Sony ZV-1F typically sells for $599 / £499 / CA$650, but the price has temporarily dropped in the US, the UK, and Canada.

The larger sensor and bright lens make the Sony ZV-1F a fantastic camera for the price point – enough so that it made the list of the best Sony cameras. The biggest disappointment on the ZV-1F is that it only has digital stabilization, and it isn’t that great for taking video while moving around. The built-in lens has some edge softness, and still photographers may also miss the lack of a viewfinder.

The Sony ZV-1F isn’t perfect, but competing cameras that also have a one-inch or similar sensor like the Canon PowerShot V1 or the Sony RX100 VII sit at significantly higher price points. If I wanted a compact camera that could handle both videos and photos, but couldn’t spend more than $500 / £450 / $550 CAD, the Sony ZV-1F would be at the top of my list.

3. Amazon Photos

All Amazon Prime members get unlimited photo storage and up to 5GB of video storage with Amazon Photos. I didn’t even know about Amazon Photos until recently, and I have no idea why Amazon doesn’t shout about it more. Unlike Google Drive, where you’re limited to 15GB, you can upload all your precious memories to Amazon Photos and never run out of space.

This is the perfect solution for photographers who want to back up their work on cloud storage without having to pay anything extra for Dropbox or the best cloud storage for photos.

4. Prime Video

As well as free next-day delivery, being an Amazon Prime member also gives you access to Prime Video – which includes hundreds of films, series, and Amazon Originals to keep you entertained. Considering that Netflix starts at $9.99 / £6.99 a month for the most basic plan, where you can only watch things in 480p, Prime Video is pretty good value for the money.

There are some huge titles available to watch for free, such as Lady Gaga's House of Gucci, the critically acclaimed Bong-Joon Ho film Parasite and the photography documentary Finding Vivian Maier among many more.

Amazon Prime Video can be a brilliant place to find inspiration for shoots and, if you're a videographer, ideas on color grading styles, camera shots, and film angles.

5. Prime Music

If you don’t want to pay for multiple services such as Spotify and Netflix, an Amazon Prime membership also includes music streaming with Prime Music. It’s a little different from Amazon Music, in that there are only 2 million songs to choose from rather than the much larger 100 million, and you won't be able to listen to full albums by your favorite artists. But if that doesn't bother you, there is still a lot going for it.

Many professional photographers cite listening to music as one of their inspirations – particularly when it comes to getting in the zone for the editing phase of their work – so why not dig in and find yourself the right playlist to process your photos to?

6. Free Deliveroo Plus for a year (UK Only)

Amazon has teamed up with Deliveroo to give all new Amazon Prime members a free year of Deliveroo Plus, which means that delivery is free when you spend over £25.

You have to sign up for the deal via the Deliveroo website, rather than through Amazon, but it’s well worth doing, considering some restaurants can now charge as much as £4.99 for delivery!

When you need to power through a particularly heavy editing session or find yourself shooting on the road, this could be a great perk to have.

Regardless of how you feel about supporting Amazon as a photographer, there’s no denying that Prime membership offers solid value for money. Of course, it’s hard to ignore the criticism Amazon faces around how it treats its workforce - a shame for a company of its size. That said, the perks, especially for creatives, are hard to ignore. I’ve focused on the benefits most useful for photographers, though I have to give Deliveroo a shoutout - free food delivery is always worth a mention.

I originally signed up for Prime during lockdown while setting up a small business. I was ordering everything from polymer clay and gold leaf to resin and super glue. Since then, it’s come to the rescue more than once - whether it’s last-minute gear for a shoot or something I’ve forgotten before a festival, it’s saved me a dash to the shops more times than I can count.

Back then, I had no idea just how many benefits came with Prime - and I’ve since found out I’m not the only one.

1. Free next day delivery

One of the biggest perks of Amazon Prime is also the most obvious: free next-day delivery on thousands of items. Whether it’s filters, props, or a last-minute bit of kit for a shoot, it’s hands-down the fastest way to get what you need in a hurry.

Prime’s premium delivery has saved me more times than I can count. I also really rate the option to filter results to show only Prime-eligible items - it cuts the faff. And if you order early enough, depending on your location, you can even get same-day delivery on some things… which still amazes me.

2. Prime Video

On top of the delivery perks, a Prime membership also gets you access to Prime Video - packed with films, series, and Amazon originals. When you compare it to something like Netflix, which starts at £8.99/$8.99 a month for standard-def viewing, Prime offers really solid value for money.

There’s a surprising amount of big-name content included too, as a photographer or videographer, it can be a great place to soak up visual inspiration, whether it’s for shoot concepts, lighting ideas, or creative camera work.

3. Prime Music

If you’re trying to cut down on subscription costs, Prime also throws in music streaming via Prime Music. It’s not quite the full Amazon Music experience - you get access to around 2 million tracks instead of the 90 million on the premium tier, and you won’t be able to stream full albums from every artist. But if you’re not too picky, there’s still plenty to enjoy.

One of the most underrated perks of Prime is Amazon Photos - all members get unlimited photo storage and 5GB for video, completely free. I only discovered it recently, and honestly can’t understand why Amazon doesn’t make more noise about it.

Unlike Google Drive, which caps you at 15GB, Amazon Photos lets you upload as many images as you like without eating into your storage. It’s a brilliant option for photographers who want a simple, secure cloud backup without paying extra for Dropbox or a separate photo storage plan.

5. Free Deliveroo Plus for a year

Amazon Prime members also get a free year of Deliveroo Plus — meaning no delivery fees on orders over £25. You’ll need to activate it through the Deliveroo website (not Amazon), but it’s definitely worth it, especially with some places now charging up to £4.99 just to deliver.

If you’re in the middle of a long editing session or out shooting and need food fast, this is one of those perks that can really come in handy.

6. Prime Reading

With Prime Reading, you get access to a rotating selection of books each month that you can read for free on your Kindle or phone. It might not beat the feel of a real book in your hands, but it’s ideal for travel - especially when you’re trying to pack light and can’t justify the extra weight.

I try to support independent shops, buy music on vinyl, and live as ethically as I can — but I’ll admit, Amazon’s convenience can be hard to resist. And with extras like this, it’s even more tempting.

Amazon's Prime Day has become one of the biggest sales in the retail calendar- and this year it will be longer than ever.  In recent years it has lasted two days in most places… but this year it will last for four days. The dates for Prime Day 2025 have just been announced will be July 8-11.

When will Amazon Prime Day 2025 deals go live?

The Amazon Prime Day 2025 event to last for 96 hours, finishing on Tuesday at midnight - Pacific Time if you are in the US, and BST in the UK . In Australia, where they have had a longer Prime Day sale, the event will now run for seven days - from July 8-14).

The July sales event will be held in 20 different countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the U.S., and the UK. Prime members in Brazil, Egypt, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates can shop Prime Day deals later this summer.

However, not all of the deals go live at the same time, with some only going live a few hours before Prime Day ends. Some deals started going live earlier, so we'll be constantly checking the best offers and will bring you them as soon as we spot them.

How to make the most of Amazon Prime Day

I've spent the past week knee-deep in searches and promo pages to round up the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday camera deals. As a result, there have been far too many Amazon tabs open in my browser for far too long.

Well, Amazon noticed. And it was obviously very confused. You know how Amazon recommends you more stuff, based on the stuff you've been looking at? Well, I've been looking at such a bizarre and non-sequitur range of camera gear that clearly Amazon thinks I will buy any old crap.

DVDs and instruction manuals for decade-old DSLRs. Editing software on a Windows 98 CD-ROM. A lime green American Idol camera.

I thought I'd seen some junk on the depths of Amazon before, but this took the back alley bric-a-brac to all new levels. Here are the "highlights" of the crap that Amazon recommended to me while I was trying to be a good person and find deals to save you money…

American Idol Digital Camera ($7)

If you've ever wanted a lime green digital camera on a keychain with a tiny American Idol logo on it, this is the camera for you. There's no indication of its specs, though it promises to be able to take stills and video, as well as act as a webcam.

The highlight here is ostensibly the included software that enables you to "put yourself onto the American Idol stage"… but you'll need a Windows XP computer to run said software – or to download your images, as there's no memory card on this camera. Which means, there's no other way to get your files off it.

The description suggests that you "throw it in your pocket and go". I suggest that you throw it in the trash and forget this ever happened.

Nikon School DVD: Fast, Fun & Easy Great Digital Pictures ($6.96)

How quaint, Amazon is recommending me a DVD! And I say that as someone who still buys physical media (so maybe I brought this recommendation on myself). However, perhaps the only thing quainter than Amazon recommending a DVD in 2024 is that it's recommending a DVD designed for the Nikon D40 / D40X, which was launched in 2006.

So, what can I expect from this digital versatile disc for a camera that's approaching two decades old? Well, I'll get 35 minutes of knowledge bombs from National Geographic Traveler photographer Bob Krist (in 16x9 widescreen, no less).

"Bob will lead you through a fun day of shooting while explaining the advantages of the various Digital Vari-Program Modes," threatens the description. Who knew that insomnia could be cured in 35 minutes.

ArcSoft Camera Suite 1.3 ($5.98)

At last, I can say goodbye to my Adobe subscription! Gone are the days of paying through the nose for Creative Cloud – for just six bucks, I can get ArcSoft PhotoImpression and ArcSoft VideoImpression on one handy CD-ROM.

There's a catch, though. Remember how you needed Windows XP to run the software for that American Idol camera? Well, that's positively futuristic compared to this – because ArcSoft Camera Suite 1.3 requires Windows 98SE / Me / 2000. Or Macintosh 9 / X if you're one of those strange people who owns an Apple Macintosh computer.

No time to worry about that, though – Amazon warns me in bold letters that there's "Only 1 left in stock – order soon"…

Nikon D700 User's Manual ($22.99)

Who even knew that Amazon sold camera manuals? Is this why the last camera I bought had the manual missing from the box? Come to think of it, who even knew that camera manuals were worth so much… I should dig all of mine out and make a nice chunk of change!

Still, I've never owned a Nikon D700 (a rather fine full-frame professional DSLR camera that came out in 2008), so maybe I should pick up the manual to see what I was missing out on.

The question is, do I pay $23 bucks for this paper manual, or download the PDF from Nikon for free? Hmm. Well, I did say that I still collect physical media…

Kenko Digital Mini Camera 9300 ($20.95)

Far and away the most intriguing thing Amazon tried to get me to buy was this James Bond-looking watch camera – which I would no doubt have gone bananas over as a kid, though I'm not quite as enamored with its 0.3MP resolution and 320 x 240 video today.

In true 007 fashion, it looks like there's a quick release mechanism to deploy the camera from the wrist strap, take a couple of covert shots and then put it back before you're noticed by SPECTRE or Smirnoff or whoever your arch nemesis is.

Unlike the wretched American Idol camera, this one comes with a USB cable – so you may well be able to transfer your files without having to install ancient software that requires a decades-old operating system. The only thing I can't figure out is that it somehow requires three AAA batteries. How big is this thing?

Olympus Silca-5S Silica Gel ($13.56)

You know sometimes when you buy an expensive piece of electronic equipment, it comes with a little cloth or paper packet of silica gel? Most people dump those straight in the trash. Other people apparently pay 13 bucks to buy them from Olympus / OM System.

It looks like this is intended for owners of underwater camera housings or waterproof cameras – and since I was looking at deals on the latter, I guess this is how the Amazon algorithm decided that I need a bag of silica sachets.

In case you're curious, these packets of dessicant are drying agents used to prevent moisture – so they're obviously ideal for kit that's designed to be used in water. However, as someone who always keeps his packets of silica gel, this is 13 bucks that Amazon won't be getting from me.

Minolta Background Priority Card ($12.95)

In fairness, this thing is actually pretty fascinating. Back in 1988, Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000i – an innovative film SLR that introduced the concept of Creative Expansion Cards, which could be inserted into the camera to power special shooting functions.

Some of these were quite clever, such as the Exposure Bracketing and Intervalometer cards, along with truly creative cards like Fantasy that shifted focus during exposure to combine a misty soft focus effect with zoom-like effect.

This Background Priority card is a little less interesting, enabling the camera to maintain background sharpness if the focal length or distance changes. However, this Expansion Card feature is pretty ingenious for a camera from 1988 – and makes me miss the glory days of Minolta.

With such a whirlwind of discounts since Black Friday season started, I'm really interested to see what people are actually buying as the Cyber Monday camera deals hit full swing.

I'm looking at the Amazon mirrorless sales chart, but it should be noted that the Kodak FZ45 and Kodak FZ55 are both way ahead of everything else in terms of sales – people really can't get enough of these mediocre compacts, for whatever reason.

That aside, the key takeaway here is that Sony is absolutely dominating, with four of the top five sellers. And what's really interesting to me is that the top to cameras are the Sony ZV-E10 and ZV-1 – two of the best cameras for vlogging.

Is this because both cameras are relatively affordable, or because people are getting into content creation at an even faster rate than we thought?

Anyway, here's the full top five:

It's times like this that it really hits home just how much of the market Nikon has lost to everyone else; Nikon doesn't even crack the top 30 (the Nikon Z30 comes in at 31), while both Fujifilm (at 23 with the X-M5) and Panasonic (with the Lumix S5 II at 30) managed to make it.

Speaking to the EOS R100, Canon clearly knows what customers want – even if it's a product that pundits thumb their nose at. I can't tell you the number of "experts" who've dumped on this camera (which is one I've always championed), but it's exactly what a certain segment of the market wants, needs, and is clearly buying in huge quantities.

Remember, kids: just because someone on the internet says a camera is terrible and that Canon doesn't know what it's doing, doesn't make it so. Chances are that Canon knows the market pretty well.

There are fewer phrases that can strike fear into the hearts of mortals than “I’m thinking of starting a podcast”.

If you’ve been affected by any of the issues raised in this sentence, I promise it’s going to be OK. Why? Because you’re going to be the person who saves their friend or loved one from sounding like their podcast was recorded on a phone in a bathroom.

Earlier this year I got to play with a pair of Hollyland Lark M2 wireless mics. They’re the answer to the question “What if decent quality lapel mics were as easy to use as AirPods?” and they’re perfect for recording in-person. You get two mics in the box, each the size of a pound coin.

As a gift-giving experience, they’re wonderful. The package comes with two mics and the wireless receiver (which simply plugs your phone’s bum) all in a cool charging case, which lights up to tell you how much battery it’s got, and recharges itself – and the bits inside – via USB-C.

But as they start playing with the set during the nether-period between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, your friend will love it – and you – even more. That’s because the manufacturer has thought of everything.

If your friend is recording video too, they can cover up the Hollyland logo with an emoji sticker, or a solid black one, so the mic just blends into the background.

The mics attach to clothing via magnet, necklace, or standard lapel fastening. I use the magnet regularly, feeding the backing up through my jumper and popping the mic over it. (Think of it like a broach, except with magnets rather than pins). I even recorded a TikTok video in the bath using the necklace… but the less said about that, the better.

There’s all sorts of other fancy stuff like noise cancellation and an app that saves settings back to the mics. But they’re completely plug-and-play, and so fun to use.

You know the phrase about the best camera being the one you have with you? Well, if your friend isn’t ready to make the leap to buying a camera and a set of lenses, you can pick up this simple webcam-style mount for their iPhone(amazon link). It attaches magnetically and clamps softly to a monitor. And if space is an issue, these low-profile lights can sit ontop of the monitor and light up their face… just like it will when they see what an amazing friend they have in you.

Friends don’t let their friends send bad audio out into the world. Give them the gift of high-quality sound at an affordable price, and the only problem you’ll have is figuring out how to top it next year.

I've seen so many Cyber Monday camera deals this week that I'm starting to get a bit numb to it all. Still, with savings seemingly on just about everything, I'm curious about what people have actually been buying.

Well, a glimpse at Amazon's sales chart tells me a few things. Firstly, Canon and Sony are doing great. Secondly, more fool the camera companies who abandoned the entry-level category, because the Canon EOS R100 and R50 – two of the best cameras for beginners – are selling like gangbusters.

Thirdly, in something that shouldn't come as a huge surprise, the top-selling cameras are all bundles that come with kit lenses. Who'd have thunk it, people want to buy a camera that comes with a lens in the box.

Finally, it's interesting to note that all but one of the top five cameras are APS-C bodies – although there are three more full frame bodies when you look to the top ten, with the Canon EOS R6 Mark II in sixth, EOS R8 in seventh, and the Sony A7 IV in tenth.

It's times like this that it really hits home just how much market share Nikon has surrendered to Sony; Nikon barely scraped into the top 30, with the Z8 literally at number 30.

For context, two Panasonic cameras, a cinema camera, a Kodak camera and one of those generic off-brand crappy cameras all appeared before Nikon in the top 30. Sort of surprising not to see a Fujifilm camera, too, given how popular the internet would have you believe those cameras are.

I'll be very curious to see if the sales list looks the same at Christmas. Are these cameras popular because they're cheap, or because they're what people actually want?

Amazon's Black Friday pricing doesn't only change by the day, but can vary from hour to hour, or seemingly by the minute. It's a nightmare for me – trying to keep track of the best Black Friday camera deals to provide the best buying advice. And it's a nightmare for you too – if you see a cracking deal on Amazon, should you jump in and buy it or wait to see if the price drops further? The trouble is, there's just as much chance that the price will go higher instead…

No doubt there's some AI-powered dynamic pricing robot adjusting the cost behind the scenes depending on supply and demand – but for the consumer (and deals writer!) it's really not very helpful. Sometimes the price shifts by a few dollars or pounds either way, so it' s no big deal, but other times it's in the tens or even hundreds, in which case you'll feel rightly peeved if your bargain proves not to be quite the cracking deal you first thought it was.

But here's how you can beat ’em at their own game. For most products bought during the Black Friday weekend and beyond, Amazon is offering free returns until 31 January, 2025 (IMPORTANT: check this is the case before you click!). So my advice is: if you see a brilliant deal on Amazon, go ahead and buy it. And if you see the price has dropped further later, buy it again (obviously, if it goes up, don't!). And if it subsequently drops even lower, buy it again.

Then, when the Black Friday/Cyber Monday frenzy has died down, simply return any surplus purchases for a full refund. I further advise that you keep the boxes unopened and a careful eye on which product arrived in each shipment, so you don't end up inadvertently returning the one you got for the best price!

Also be aware of the trick Amazon is applying to some deals where you have to click an easy-to-miss tick box to make the advertised saving!

I'm pulling my hair out and I might even not buy a new lens when I stand to save over £200. Why? Because of Cashback deals, which I find a bit odd.

What is wrong with a good old discount? It was one price, now it is another? Simple and straightforward. Bish, bosh.

Even as a writer who is sharing a lot of deals over the Black Friday period it's easier because I can do the old price, with a line through, and the new price.

Sony, however, seem keen to frustrate me by offering something called Cashback. Which means I need to claim my reward after the purchase. A month later, in fact. And, honestly, I don't like that (and I'm very uncertain how to write about it).

Having briefly held the new (and very definitely out of budget) Sony A1 II and, more significantly, the Sony 28-80MM F/2 GM lens that launched alongside I started to pine for a 'proper' lens, rather than the kit lens I've been making do with on my A7 III. Sure, it's fine for what I actually need day to day, but what if I actually wanted to take some really nice pictures?

The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II seems the obvious upgrade as a carrying-around lens with a suitably wide aperture. But because all the reviews talk about the original, and because money is a factor, I start thinking about the cheaper original, which leads me to a 'Cashback' deal at Wex...

Now the problem for me is that I don't love the idea of having to do admin to get my discout. But, on the other hand, Wex's deals here are clealy better than the Amazon ones that I've linked as alternatives!

Luckily for me, I did have an additional route that I could call on for advice – the rest of the Digital Camera World team who, collectively, have experienced Sony's cashback offers before and know that the company can be trusted to pay up – though they do make you wait a month after purchase. Perhaps they're hoping you forget, or perhaps they're just hoping you won't take the lens back?

Why Sony don't offer cashback to customers who buy from Amazon we can't say for sure, but the fact that they do go with a number of trusted camera retailers is probably a good thing.

I won't sniff at a free 128GB memory card either. Now I'll just decide if I really should do it. (That version II is looking mighty tempting right now!)

Right now you can save over $100 or £100 on the camera that Taylor Swift uses, as it's been massively discounted in the US and UK. If you're interested, my advice is not to wait – because this camera often fluctuates in price!

Say what you want about Taylor Swift, but she knows her cameras – she was even a spokesperson for Sony back in the 2010s! The point is, there's a reason she's picked the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV (review) as her camera of choice.

Firstly it's one of the smallest cameras out there. Thanks to its small-but-mighty Micro Four Thirds sensor (which way bigger and better quality than the one in your phone) it's both very tiny and very light – and, importantly, so are the lenses for it! It boasts 20.3MP resolution for your photos, making them super-detailed for social media as well as big enough to print out and put on your wall. There's a 180° flip-out screen for taking selfies, or for filming yourself in crisp 4K video. It even boasts 4.5 stops of image stabilization, so you don't need to worry about shaky hands!

If you're passionate about photography, few brands carry as much prestige as Leica. With a legacy spanning over 150 years, Leica has been instrumental in shaping the industry and remains a favorite among photographers worldwide, including myself who know owns two.

I've been looking for the best deals on drones all week because I've been feeding a live blog on the best drone deals for black friday 2024, but at the same time I'm a responsible writer who cares about drones and people having a good experience with them.

The result? Well, I've not been able to fire off as much content as perhaps the algorithms that power the world these days would expect of a Live page because, if we're being absolutely honest, the deals thus far have been limited in scope. There are a few stand-outs, for sure, but a few factors seem to have made it hard to find good deals.

One is that supplies (in America especially) have been constricted, so there is less incentive to discount. The other is the DJI Neo – a drone so new, different and good that it actually manages to be cheaper than a lot of drones – and offer more – without needing to be discounted! That's impressive, but it does mean it's harder to talk about discounts!

There is a cheaper choice that's better for photographers and has been significantly discounted – the DJI Mini 4K. (Check my Mini 4K v Neo comparison) This is more 'old school' (in that the folding ultralight drone concept has been around for about 5 years now, so not exactly historic!!) but if the creativity is more important to you the much longer battery life and more stable video (plus RAW photos) are winners. At 20% off this is also a proper 'deal', I'd say given it is a current generation product, and a good one at that:

Will it get even harder to get cheap drones in America?

Probably, yes. Good ones, certainly. Even if you ignore the talk of more tariffs in the new year, there are already plans to increase the taxes on drones from China and all the good drones are made in whole or in part in China. Even Skydio, the big American drone company where the boss Adam Bray gets its parts from China, which is probably why – straight after speaking against China – the company found its supplies drying up.

The lesson? Buy good drones while you still can, and probably the best for most higher-end prosumers/photographers/creators at the moment is the DJI Air 3 or (if you can get it into America) the updated Air 3S. Because of the recent update, it's the Air 3 which is usually cheaper:

On-the-day Black Friday UPDATE: Ok, this one is just for the USA at the moment, that's so good that, even if you don't click through, I want you to see it:

Right. Now to reiterate my first point, I'm also a big fan of the HoverAir X1, but it has to be said that the DJI Neo (see above) is a bit cheaper even without a discount. So, while I'll still be checking the deals, perhaps it's best to just look at the guides to the best camera drone, best beginner's drone, best FPV drone or best kids drone and choose what you'd prefer.

If you're shopping the Black Friday camera deals, be careful out there! Amazon has increasingly been using a new device on product listings that could potentially cost you hundreds of dollars.

The new mechanism (which, I'm told, is also being used by a few other retailers) at best makes it easy for you to overlook a discount, and at worst is intentionally designed to trick you into thinking you've got the best deal by obfuscating a further saving.

You might already have bought something via the Amazon website or app without noticing that a discount was being offered.

The company has been adding a very small, very discreet tickbox beneath the price on certain product listings, marked "Coupon" in the US and "Voucher" in the UK. I first noticed this a couple of months ago, and savings that are available only via these tiny checkboxes have ranged from £2 off a USB splitter to $600 off a portable generator.

Here's an example of a listing that I saw during the recent Prime Big Deal Days event:

The voucher checkbox is small and surrounded by colorful text, star ratings and visual elements, and is dwarfed by the giant-font product description – and, crucially, it is positioned away from the purchasing sidebar containing the normal buying options (such as quantity and add to cart).

In this case, a $600 saving could easily be missed by anyone who wasn't sufficiently observant or was simply browsing in a rush. The checkbox is even easier to scroll past on the mobile app, too.

Why not just place the checkbox in the same purchasing sidebar, made obvious in the same way that the other buying options are? More's the point, given that this was in the middle of Amazon's Big Deal Days event, why wasn't this saving automatically applied – you know, on the off chance that someone shopping during a sales event might want to actually save money?

The way the checkbox is obfuscated by page elements during Black Friday feels even more insidious:

Here it feels like the listing is deliberately suggesting to the buyer that they have already got the best offer. "Black Friday Deal" is emblazoned in a red box, with a percentage saving highlighted in big red letters – so at a glance, you would think "Great, I've got my Black Friday saving!"

However, if your eyes creep a little further down, there's the option for a further significant saving – but only if you check the box.

Again, why isn't the discount automatically applied – especially during a huge sales event, when it can be fairly assumed that browsers are consenting to saving as much money as they can? What motive can Amazon have for adding extra steps to the process, other than hoping that the customer will miss the opportunity to save money?

It feels pretty unfair to me. Yes, we should all look very carefully at everything we click on the internet – it is, after all, our own responsibility to read everything on the page. But to me, this seems like caveat emptor in the most miserable, mercenary spirit possible. Sorry you screwed yourself out of getting the best deal. Happy Thanksgiving!

The biggest retail event of the year is nearly upon us and the Black Friday camera deals have already started to roll in. But while it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of finding and jumping on the best mirrorless camera deal, navigating Black Friday isn’t only about perusing the web or stores for great offers.

If you’re willing to put a little work in, you can land yourself an even better deal by taking advantage of price match promises. You’d be surprised how many retailers are willing to match prices, and while you might think: "What’s the point of contacting a retailer just so they match the price of something I can get elsewhere?" Well, there are plenty of reasons...

Some retailers will beat the price of a comparable retailer. Meaning you get an even better deal. And if you price match with a retailer who offers cheaper delivery, you could end up saving money that way, too. Similarly, price matching may enable you to buy multiple items from the same store, mitigating multiple delivery fees. If you have a favorite retailer – who you know offers great customer service and prompt delivery – you may prefer to buy from them. And finally, you may opt to go with the retailer who offers the best warranty.

Where applicable, I’ve listed links to retailers' T&Cs, so make sure you read them carefully. Expect those who offer price-matching services to only match like-for-like items, products that are in stock and immediately available, as well as excluding some discounts and promotional offers, such as voucher codes and cashback.

While they’re unlikely to price match, don’t forget to visit manufacturers’ online stores directly. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, OM System, DJI, Apple and more, all have official online stores. Head straight to the source, and you never know, you might spot an exceptional, exclusive deal.

John Lewis

John Lewis's price promise is well known. What makes it so good is that you can jump on a deal and request the price promise after the fact, since you have seven days from the moment of purchase to make the request and, if successful, John Lewis will refund the difference.

The historic department store is very specific as to which retailers it will price match. There’s a list of 25 stores – which doesn’t include any specialist camera retailers – but it will price match against Apple, Argos and Currys.

Currys

The giant electrical retailer boasts one of the most comprehensive price-match services of all. Currys says it will "price match against any other UK retailer, online or in-store." And like John Lewis, you have seven days in which to make your claim. Do read its T&Cs to note any exclusions.

Currys is also famed for its Black Friday Price Match Guarantee, and this year is no exception. It states: "If we lower the price of our eligible Black Friday deals before 2nd December, you can claim a refund for the price difference." You must claim by December 9 and, as always, some exclusions apply.

Argos

The decades-old high-street staple – and now Sainsbury’s staple – is running a Black Friday price promise campaign. But it only applies to specific online and in-store products indicated via a ‘Price Promise’ badge. The policy isn’t as clear as other retailers. Rather than including a price-match element, it appears to be a declaration from Argos that the prices of ‘Price Promise’ products are fixed and, "will not fall below the purchase price before 23:59 on 25 December 2024."

Jessops

Jessops is arguably the UK’s most well-known photography store, having opened its doors way back in 1935 and being a common high-street fixture. Not only does it offer price matching, but it’s launched a Black Friday price promise. So, if you pick something up now and it’s discounted further during the big event, Jessops will refund you the difference.

When it comes to price matching, Jessops will match a variety of UK "authorized retailers" including Wex Photo Video, Park Cameras and Currys. Unsurprisingly, marketplace or auction sites are not matched and neither are gray imports. Visit the Jessops website for more details on its price-matching policy and Black Friday price promise, including a link to the full T&Cs.

Park Cameras

Park Cameras operates from its brick-and-mortar stores in Burgess Hill and London, and has an extensive online offering, too. The camera specialist's FAQ page says it will "attempt" to match the prices of UK retailers. And as is the norm, it will not price match against gray import dealers. You’ll need to call 01444 237070 – during opening hours – and have the quote you intend to price match at the ready.

Wex Photo Video

Wex Photo Video is one of the largest camera specialist UK retailers, boasting the UK’s largest selection of photographic equipment via both online and brick-and-mortar offerings. I cannot find anything in Wex Photo Video’s T&Cs to suggest it will price match purchases. But its part-exchange service does state: "We promise a fair price and a price match or beat any like-for-like UK quote."

UK retailers do tend to run similar promotions, so if you find a deal elsewhere, there’s a good chance Wex will have already matched it. The photographic retailer is also offering customers the chance to register their interest for its Black Friday offers, so they’ll receive up-to-the-minute email notifications of the best deals during the big event.

MPB

The used camera specialist was founded in 2011. It offers a very slick service for selling photographic equipment and provides buyers with some great deals on second-hand cameras, lenses, accessories and more.

MPB does not appear to offer price matching. However, it does have a price promise, where it states it, "provides the right price for every piece of gear based on make, model, cosmetic condition, and market". You can also get a free instant quote by filling out a simple online form and providing your email.

Amazon UK

The world's largest online retailer doesn't offer a price-matching service but is known for constantly amending its prices to match or beat other retailers. You can be confident that Amazon's Black Friday deals are extremely competitive. Still, it never hurts to shop around, just in case...

London Camera Exchange

London Camera Exchange is the most populous camera retailer on the high street, with 27 stores in the UK. I cannot find any mention of a price-match policy on the retailer’s website, but a Black Friday deals page is already live. You can subscribe to the LCE newsletter, too, which might be a good idea if you anticipate buying from the outfit during the big Black Friday melee.

Although Amazon has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the discounts, we anticipate some fantastic deals, given that this marks the inaugural six-day Big Spring Sale – and Amazon is sure to pull out all the stops. 

Here at DCW, my colleagues and I are gearing up to provide comprehensive coverage of the entire six-day event, so be sure to stay tuned for our expert insights and top recommendations on the hottest deals.

Did the annual Black Friday rush in November capsize camera shipments in October?

CIPA (the Camera & Imaging Products Association) has released its latest report, providing an overview of digital camera sales and shipments over the past year in comparison with the previous two. Shipments of both interchangeable and lens-integrated cameras were plotted on a graph showing how the market reacted in 2023. 

The health of the digital camera market had been recovering for most of the year, after being decimated during the pandemic. However, CIPA's results show that a major dip in October / November has significantly skewed what would have been an improved and steady year. Could this be an effect of the ever-increasing popularity of Black Friday, and people holding out for better deals? Or were camera manufacturers under so much demand that shipments stalled? 

In April and May 2023, shipments of interchangeable lens cameras were greatly increased over the same period in previous years, before steadying to corresponding levels from June to October. October / November, however, saw a significant decrease. 

This may be a result of Black Friday, a commercial promotion at the end of November aimed at providing the best deals before the holiday season. The dip in shipments could be due to people holding off buying cameras in October and waiting for the perfect Black Friday deal at the end of November. It will be interesting to see the data for December, to see if there was an influx of shipments over the extended Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

On the other hand, another possibility for the decline is the lack of new releases towards the end of the year. The last major launch was the Fujifilm GFX 100 II in September, and that isn't exactly your everyday consumer camera!

The data shows that fixed (integrated) lens camera shipments appear to have been a lot lower in 2023 than in 2022 and 2021, although they were consistent throughout the year. Fixed-lens models, particularly some of the best compact cameras, have been growing in popularity in recent years, so much so that they have exceeded expectations – and cameras like the Fujifilm X100V are still hard to get. I expect this data to increase over 2024, as fixed lens cameras such as the successors to the X100V and Ricoh GR III are rumored.

Among interchangeable lens cameras, the 86,575 DSLRs shipped were vastly overshadowed by the 415,342 mirrorless cameras. The figures show that DSLR shipments are down a whopping 50%, seeing the fastest growth for mirrorless cameras so far, as the drawn-out death of the DSLR continues.

It is useful to get an insight into how the camera market is behaving, as it provides a gauge of the health of the medium – and to show recovery during a global cost of living crisis is encouraging. With many camera manufacturers rumored to be releasing new models in 2024, I can envision market growth, especially with many of these rumored releases being new flagship models. However, an increase in sales may also mean an increase in shipping times!

Okay, I'm a photographer and I'll be the first to admit – buying a Christmas gift for a photographer is hard work! It's a famously complicated hobby, for starters, and a famously expensive one, too.

It may not be "Secret Santa cheap", but it's very cheap for a camera lens – so if you have a couple of hundred quid in your budget, you can give somebody a really unique and creative camera lens that they're guaranteed to go out and use!

Lensbaby lenses are an acquired taste, and a lot of photographers simply don't give them the time of day because they have a reputation of being gimmicky. However, the Lensbaby Spark 2.0 is one of my very favorite lenses – and everybody I know who has used mine has had an absolute blast with it! 

There's a phrase in the videogames industry when a game is so compulsive, so engrossing, so moreish, that players simply can't put the controller down: these games are called "sticky". And this is the stickiest lens I've ever used! Like all manual focus lenses it's a thoroughly engaging, enjoyable and inspiring experience to shoot with it, free from all the automation and assists of modern optics. 

On top of that, it's a special effect lens that requires you to squeeze and pivot and play with the spring-loaded lens in order to focus and position the effect in your frame. Ever wanted your own, personal camera operator to film you while you're shooting video? That's exactly what the Pivo Max is! I've always been intrigued by these automated panning devices, but I've always been a little skeptical about them. However, when my colleague Rod awarded it 4½ stars in his review, I needed to check it out myself.

I'm really, really glad that I did! As someone who films a lot of content both for YouTube and sites like Digital Camera World, I've always wanted to add a little dynamism to my videos. With the Pivo Max, even when I'm shooting solo with my camera locked down on sticks, I'm no longer limited to static shots – this little thing will track and follow me as I move around the scene. 

Simply plonk this little pod on a flat surface or, even better, mount it to a tripod (the official Pivo Tripod works a treat if you don't already have one) and insert your phone into the clamp. Set things up with the easy-to-use app and, hey presto! As well as recording on your phone, you can attach a dedicated camera and lens (up to 2kg) and mount the phone on the hot shoe for tracking purposes. 

This little motorized marvel will keep you in frame through a full 360°, which is fantastic if you're shooting content on location at an epic landmark or beautiful landscape, or indoors at a cool venue, and want to show viewers the whole scene around you. My partner is a yoga teacher, and this would be perfect for someone like her who teaches physical classes where you might need to get up and move around to demonstrate. With Christmas fast approaching it’s getting to that time of year when people start asking what you want – a question I always find impossible to answer. But even when I’m void of ideas there is always something I beg people not to get me; camera or photography-related presents! Without meaning to sound ungrateful, the last thing I want is a mug shaped like a lens or a rubbish air blower.

As a photographer, the items on my wishlist are usually pretty expensive. That means that unless someone is feeling insanely generous it’s unlikely I’m going to get the photography lighting kit of my dreams (two Profoto B10 X Plus studio heads with all the light shaping accessories) or the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM lens I have wanted forever. 

Just to clarify, I would never ask for these items either, I have never been one for excessive spending at Christmas, so to expect it back would be absurd, but in the past I have received DSLR holsters I’ll never use, or packs of scratchy lens clothes that remain in a junk drawer.

That’s not to say there aren’t some really good, affordable presents out there for photographers. I just think the person you’re buying for needs to specify that they want them, or you need to know the recipient so well you could handpick a coffee table book or print they will love. I have previously received an Instax Mini, a 35mm film camera, a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens and a prism but all of these have been on a wishlist so the person buying them knew they’d be put to good use. 

I love Christmas. I love the decorations, the excuse to eat and drink excessively, the coming together of friends and family and of course watching Christmas films on repeat, but what I cannot stand is present giving for giving sake. I have a soft spot for handmade or unique presents – perhaps a photo book, personalized photo calendar or a digital photo frame already loaded with photos. 

But I cannot stress enough how much I do not want to be on the receiving end of photography-themed Christmas tat. Christmas isn’t about how much stuff you get or how much someone spends but if you are going to be giving presents this year, try and make sure they will not go to waste!

If you fancy getting into the world of social media influencing, you'll need a bit more than just a camera phone if you want to make really professional-looking content – and with so many Black Friday camera deals to be had, now is a good time to invest!

Whether you want to be an influencer in the world of beauty, cooking, fitness, lifestyle or something entirely different, a decent basic set-up would require a ring light, a mini tripod or selfie stick with tripod feet, a microphone, a smartphone gimbal and if you can stretch to it, a camera for vlogging specifically designed with content creation in mind.

1: Camera

Can't quite stretch to a camera yet? Don't worry you can still start your content creation journey even on a budget so long as you can create videos that are well-lit!

Ring lights are perfect for social media influencers - not only are they much cheaper than some other video lights but they also create beautiful circular-shaped catch lights in your eyes which work especially well with beauty influencers. 

2: Lights

With your lightning sorted, it's time to think about a tripod to hold your camera (or smartphone as most come with a phone adapter). A tabletop tripod should be sufficient depending on what type of stuff you want to shoot – but this flexible tripod from Joby will allow you to shoot in loads of different places. Secure it by wrapping the legs around around a bar, or bend the legs to make sure it's really sturdy. 

3: Tripod

The final thing to think about is sound quality - it makes such a big difference to the overall quality of your video, so investing in a decent microphone is very important. There are lots of different types – but to start with, a shotgun mic you can place in front of you or attach to the camera's hotshoe will be perfect. It will help minimize the sound of the wind when you shoot outdoors, and make your voice crisp and clear. 

4: Microphone

With these amazing Black Friday deals, so long as you already have a decent camera or smartphone, you can get started for less than £100 - we think that's something worth shouting about!

Every year Black Friday comes along and sometimes I feel almost guilty for not snapping up a big piece of gear like a discounted drone but, as it happens, I'm happy with the gear I have. What I need to get the best of it are a few peripherals which can make all the difference. So, for this Black Friday, these are the deals I'm snapping up.

For what it's worth, it's also the way I think most of us can do the best out of the day – until last Friday, when the deals really started, prices on things like memory cards and SSD drives haven't been too good. Now there are some bargains out there and they might be gone by the end of the day – almost certainly by the end of 'Cyber Monday.'

So, without further ado, here are my list of four essentials that I plan to own by the end of the day:

1: A fast memory card

Over the years I've learned it's probably best to have a few memory cards ready in my bag. They seem to last forever but they can stop working and it'd be a shame to be grounded for lack of a few dollars. Similarly, the old eggs vs. basket argument suggests it's better to stick to 512GB or 256GB and get a few than splurging on a single massive 1TB card.

2: External SSD

Like many folk, I'd like to edit video on a laptop that doesn't have as generous a storage capacity as perhaps I need (yes, it's a MacBook, so there's no changing it now!). They best solution is definitely an external drive and by my math the most cost-efficient option this Black Friday (on the day itself anyway) is the SanDisk 2TB.

3: Landing mat

Every drone pilot should have a drone landing pad, especially now drones are so short from the ground.

4: Filters

Sadly you don't get ND filters with all the Fly More deals any more, but on the plus side you can track down discounted deals this time of year which effectively offer you two savings against the own-brand alternative.

There are so many exciting products and incredible discounts in the Black Friday camera deals. But here's my number one tip: don't get distracted by bargain bodies and exotic lenses – buy some spare camera batteries!!!

You probably don't need a new lens. You probably need a new camera even less. But I'm pretty sure that what you do need is a spare battery or two – and you may as well get them while they're cheap! 

It's not sexy, but it's smart – and future you will thank you for it.

When will the Black Friday camera deals start?

This year, the official Black Friday date will take place from Friday 24 November through to Monday 27 November 2023 (Cyber Monday), and some of the best camera deals won't be available after that date – and other deals may run out (as we know that some Fujifilm items are in short supply globally). We will however continue to bring you the news of the best Black Friday camera deals for as long as they keep running (and some will undoubtedly be available through to Christmas.

Camera cashback schemes remain ever popular with manufacturers because it enables them to offer special short-term discounts without driving down the long-term recommended retail price. 

They’re typically seasonal too; so you’ll often see winter, spring and summer promotions – meaning some photo enthusiasts can actively wait to make a purchase during those months in anticipation of saving a few £s. And right now there are some great cashback offers from Sony, Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus and Panasonic running to take into account when looking for the best Black Friday camera deals.

Typically, cashback offers can range from £25 upon purchase of a flashgun or lens to over £500 for a professional camera or a top-grade lens. Generally the higher priced the item to start with, the higher the cashback value to tempt you into a purchase. 

As a consumer, receiving cashback means you have to jump through a couple of hoops to get your saving – usually involving the registering of the equipment you’ve bought online, the completion of a redemption form and the inclusion of proof of purchase (i.e your receipt) – but we’d advise that overall it’s a win-win for you, the retailer, and the manufacturer of the camera, lens or photo accessories in question.

Since Canon not only makes cameras but a host of accessories and peripherals too, including photo printers, it offers pretty much everything you could want for your photo set-up darkroom.

How camera cashback works

When you buy a camera or a lens or any other camera kit with a cashback deal, you still initially pay the price quoted without the cashback discount. 

To get the cashback, you then have to fill in a form to claim it back from the manufacturer in question. All it means is that you don’t get your saving straight away – and you do need to remember to claim it! Claims are typically required within a month of the current cashback scheme ending. 

The application for cashback is usually online, and is obviously well worth the small amount of administrative effort that it takes.

So when you see a deal that includes a cashback offer, remember that you have to claim this back from the photo manufacturer and you don’t get this discount at the checkout. 

The other thing to remember is that cashback offers get rolled out across all authorised dealers. If one of them has a cashback offer from Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm or any other maker, you can bet they all have it! Do note however that Amazon UK is very often left out of the list of participating retailers – thankfully the dealers will make it pretty clear if they are in the scheme.

• IMPORTANT: Do be aware that some retailers will quote prices with the cashback already applied, as if you’ve already claimed it, so check the small print (and the price you actually pay).
• Other retailers will quote the price you pay at the checkout and put the discounted price with cashback applied in smaller print underneath.

People ask me the same question every year during Black Friday season: should I look for the best deal on the latest camera, or the best deal even if it's an old one?

It's a good question. Obviously the best Black Friday camera deals are found on bodies that are a couple of years old – so you'll be saving less money on a new camera and saving more money on an older camera. 

Is it false economy, though, to buy an older camera even if it's cheaper? 

There are two ways to approach this question. If you are looking for a specific camera for a specific reason, then clearly you want the best possible saving on it – regardless of what other bargains are on offer.

An example might be the Canon EOS R5, which you might want because you specifically want to shoot 8K. Which means it doesn't matter how much money Amazon slashes off the Panasonic S5 II or how cheap Walmart sells the Nikon Z5, because neither of them shoot 8K. 

So if you absolutely need a particular camera then, yes, you should stick to finding the best deal on it. (For reference, there's $500 off the R5 in the US and an incredible £1,000 off the R5 in the UK right now). 

However, if you just want a new camera, you can potentially save so much more money by keeping your options open.

Let's take the Sony A7R V as an example. It's new and it's amazing, but do you really need it? It's got a 61MP sensor and clever AF, but the Sony A7R IV has basically the same thing with its 60.2MP sensor and almost-as-clever AF – the only difference is, it came out in 2019 so it's far more affordable. 

We tend to think that "newer" equals "better", but that isn't always the case. My colleague Adam recently lamented this very point, noting that the GoPro Hero 12 is actually a downgrade on the Hero 11. I'd actually recommend buying the older model not just because it's cheaper, but because it's functionally better. 

So there you have it. Newer is always more expensive, but newer doesn't always mean better. And older may be cheaper, but older and cheaper don't always mean inferior. 

We all want the shiny new thing. But don't be swayed by what you want; shop for what you need. Because at the end of the day, the only false economy is saving money on something that isn't right for you.
