I’ve been into photography since I was a small child, learning from my dad, who was a professional photographer. I didn’t get into studio flash until many years later – nearly 20 years ago, in fact. I did a lot of research before buying my first kit, a set of Elinchrom D-Lite heads, and have never looked back. I’ve tested and reviewed several Elinchrom flash kits since then, ranging from entry-level sets to top-end pro offerings, and have been impressed every time around. The Swiss company has a lot of history, being founded back in 1962, and has always had a reputation for innovation and the highest levels of performance.

A constant theme, as far as I’m concerned, is that Elinchrom gear is always simple and intuitive to use, delivers consistent results of the highest quality, and is absolutely reliable and dependable. Ultimately, I can give my full attention to the creative process of shooting, rather than wrestling with needlessly complicated lighting setups. And the same goes for this transmitter and receiver set. Some of the later D-Lite ‘RX’ and other Elinchrom flash kits have the receiver electronics built into the actual flash heads, and even come complete with the trigger.

The EL-Skyport wireless radio remote system was actually launched back in 2005, and the Universal set that I’m reviewing here aims to be one of the best flash triggers for your camera, whichever camera system you happen to use.

I know plenty of professional photographers who rely on Elinchrom lighting and accessories and wouldn’t use anything else. The Elinchrom EL-Skyport Universal Plus Transmitter & Receiver Set is relatively straightforward, rather than having an overblown feature list and dedicated functions for individual camera systems. However, it’s made to work reliably and to be robust with pro-grade build quality, which makes the asking price of $140 / £142 / AU$260 very reasonable, as far as I’m concerned.

Elinchrom EL-Skyport Universal Plus: Design & Handling

I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again: Elinchrom ‘RX’ flash heads have the receiver electronics of this kit built into them, so you only need to use the transmitter, which is often supplied as part of a complete kit anyway. However, the universal nature of this kit extends to use with pretty much any camera system, any flash head, and any flashgun or ‘speedlight’.

Let’s start with the transmitter. The whole set is of a certain age, so there’s no new-fangled touchscreen interface. In fact, there isn’t even a mono LCD panel. Guess what – I don’t care. The top panel of the transmitter gives me everything I need, with simple pushbuttons for setting up to four groups of lights in 16 channels. That said, eight channels are for normal sync and eight are for ‘speed’ mode, enabling high-speed sync with leaf shutter cameras. You should also be aware that only three of the channels are compatible with older EL-Skyport systems.

The full range of pushbuttons gives access to groups, mode, channels, power-up and power-down, as well as a test flash button. Altering the power of the flash is only available with Elinchrom heads that feature the EL-Skyport system, so if you’re using a flashgun or a different studio flash head, you’ll need to adjust the power manually.

Moving to the right-hand side of the transmitter, you’ll find a simple on/off switch and a 2.5mm sync socket. The sync socket extends the range of compatibility to include cameras that don’t feature a regular hotshoe. As such, you could either buy a hotshoe adapter or use the supplied sync cable to connect the transmitter to a camera’s PC sync socket.

Up front, there’s a status lamp, as also featured on the receiver unit. This flashes in green when the transmitter and receiver are in normal mode, and in red when they’re in ‘speed’ mode. Pressing the mode button on both units to make the change also results in the other status panels for groups and channels swapping between green and red accordingly. The front status lamps also flash when you press any of the buttons or release the camera’s shutter, for visual confirmation.

One of the things that really impresses me about this kit is its wireless range of up to 200m / 656ft. To help the radio frequency communication really go the distance, the transmitter has a 90-degree upright pivot facility, so you can alter the orientation for optimum connectivity. However, in speed mode, the maximum range is halved to around 100m / 328ft. That should still prove more than enough for most situations, as well as giving enough power to cut through obstacles or work around corners, unlike with infrared wireless communication. The image above shows the trigger and receiver in horizontal orientation, while below, both are upright.

Let’s move onto the receiver module. Again, this has a hotshoe mounting base, or rather a ‘cold-shoe’ as there’s no triggering pin underneath. That’s only natural, as the triggering is received by RF wireless transmission, which is the whole point of the kit. The foot has a standard threaded quarter-inch socket for attaching to a tripod or similar support, as well as mounting into a cold-shoe, complete with locking clamp.

The top of the receiver actually does have a hotshoe. Remove the protective rubber pad and you’ll notice that, as with the trigger, there’s only a single electronic connection pin. That’s because the kit is universal rather than coming in different dedicated versions for specific camera systems. The net result is that there’s no TTL flash metering nor high-speed sync on tap. The plus side is that you can slot a regular flashgun into the hotshoe of the receiver and trigger it remotely, while using manual flash power adjustments.

As with the transmitter, compatibility is stretched to the max by the receiver featuring a 2.5mm sync socket. You can use the supplied cable for triggering any flash head that features a standard 2.5mm jack socket for synchronization. That said, quite a few flash heads have a 1/4-inch jack socket instead, but no worries, the kit includes a 2.5mm to 1/4-inch adapter. The receiver’s sync socket is towards the rear of the right-hand side, which also features the on/off switch, plus the pushbutton and status display for the group settings, the latter with four options.

The left-hand side of the receiver has another pair of pushbuttons. The one towards the rear enables you to cycle through the various channels on offer, with a status display showing the current or new setting. Towards the front, there’s a Mode button for selecting standard or speed modes, which need to be matched to the setting on the transmitter. At the rear of the left-hand panel is a Micro-USB socket, which you can use to apply firmware updates as and when needed.

Elinchrom EL-Skyport Universal Plus: Performance

In terms of performance, the Elinchrom EL-Skyport Universal Plus Transmitter & Receiver Set only really has one goal. That’s to deliver 2.4GHz radio frequency wireless transmission between the transmitter and receiver, effectively and reliably. I need the peace of mind that comes from knowing that when I press the shutter release on my camera for that all-important, time-critical shot, the camera is going to fire the transmitter, the transmitter is going to communicate with the receiver, and the receiver is going to trigger the studio flash or flashgun.

Using the Elinchrom with studio flash as well as with flashguns, I’m happy to report that it gave me a 100 per cent success rate, which I certainly can’t say about some flash triggers that I’ve used. As advertised, it worked over large distances, through obstacles and around corners, both indoors and outdoors. It’s useful being to increase or decrease the power of Elinchrom flash heads that have built-in EL-Skyport connectivity but, for me, needing to manually change the power settings of flash heads and flashguns when this is unavailable certainly isn’t a deal-breaker.

Another aspect of performance is battery life. You need to be able to count on your batteries not going flat during a shoot and the system has plenty of stamina. I like that the transmitter and receiver each take a pair of standard alkaline or Ni-MH AA batteries, which are long-lasting, universally available and easy to replace, unlike small coin batteries.

You can expect fresh batteries in the transmitter to last for around 30,000 flashes, and the batteries in the receiver to last for about 30 hours of use. I use some of the best rechargeable AA batteries and, if I’m in any doubt, top up the charge before an important shoot. Both modules feature a power-saving standby mode, which activates after 30 minutes in the transmitter and after four hours in the receiver.

Elinchrom EL-Skyport Universal Plus: Verdict

If you’re after a ‘dedicated’ wireless trigger set to match your camera system, that enables TTL flash metering, high-speed sync and remote control of flashgun power adjustments, then the Elinchrom EL-Skyport Universal Plus Transmitter & Receiver Set isn’t for you. However, if you want a trigger with rock-solid dependability that works flawlessly even over long distances, both indoors and out, this is a great universal trigger set that you can use with all sorts of cameras, flashguns and studio flash setups.

Sure, you only get one receiver in the kit, but you can buy more separately if you need to. I find that triggering one flash with the kit and using other flashes in slave mode, when I’m using multi-flash configurations, usually works fine anyway. And if you’re using Elinchrom ‘RX’ flash heads with built-in RF receivers, the trigger also gives you the ability to increase or decrease power remotely. All in all, it’s a smart kit that combines excellent performance with really solid build quality.

Throughout my career as a photographer, I have used several different lighting brands each with their own merits. However, I recently spent the day using a handful of different lights from Elinchrom, and now I can't imagine using any other.

The key to lighting is understanding how light behaves and from there you can control light to create the look you want, and more often than not, it's not the lights that make the image but the knowledge of the person using them.

Take Albert Watson's masterclass as an example, he beautifully lit a portrait with just a single lightbulb. Looking at the final photograph you would have expected a bunch of lighting rigs and a team of techs operating them.

This is all to say, a lot of the photography lighting on the market can be manipulated or modified to produce similar light, but it's the ease of use and extra features that make all the difference, and for me, Elinchrom takes the cake.

A couple of weeks ago I spent the day at a portfolio-building event organized by Creativity Hub, sponsored by Elinchrom, Fujifilm, and London Camera Exchange. Throughout the day I had access to a whole host of Elinchrom lights, and I can safely say, it was the easiest experience using off-camera lighting I have ever experienced.

Throughout the day I used a combination of the Elinchrom THREE, Elinchrom ONE, Elinchrom ELB 500, and Elinchrom ELC 500. The lights worked seamlessly and the connection between them and my camera via the trigger was instantaneous and never missfired. All I had to do was attach the trigger, make sure the lights were set to the corresponding group and away I went.

In addition to producing fantastic quality light via the Elinchrom modifiers, the lights were extremely portable, invaluable in this instance as we had access to an entire manor house grounds, interior and exterior, along with 4 models. Carrying the lights from one scene to the next was effortless, and despite the various setups, the communication between them never failed.

The Elinchrom ONE and THREE were especially versatile. Having reviewed the Elinchrom THREE previously, I already knew its qualities, but it still stood out to me along with the ONE. In addition to being extremely compact and portable, they included features such as the touch screen making changing settings a breeze, HSS, and bright modeling lamps.

Due to shooting in such a large house, areas were dimly lit, meaning I had to rely on the modeling lamps to ensure my camera caught focus. They provided a bright light enabling me to nail focus in the dark, and gave me an understanding of where my light would hit when fired – very useful!

I recommend the THREE to anyone asking me for a portable off-camera light for location shoots, either to work with natural light or overpower the sun.

The lights enabled me to capture pin-sharp images, even when shooting dynamic scenes, but they also enabled me to shoot in my own style, which is a little slowed down and less clinical.

I don't shoot much like many other photographers I know, and despite shooting at an event called Flora in the middle of summer surrounded by flowers and greenery, other than getting shots for content, I shot in black and white. I also don't mind missing focus or sacrificing image quality for the feeling of the shot. The lights adjusted to my workflow with ease and will be my go-to for the foreseeable.

I can't say enough good things about the Elinchrom lights and would recommend them to both professionals and beginners, as they are ready to go straight out of the box.

The Elinchrom THREE is an off-camera flash aimed at photographers who work in various locations and are often on the move. Located somewhere between the best flashguns and the best photography lighting kits, the Elinchrom THREE offers the best of both worlds, with studio power and quality in a compact and lightweight body that can be easily transported. 

When it comes to studio lighting and light shaping modifiers, Elinchrom is among the best in the business, and the release of the battery-powered Elinchrom ONE, THREE, and FIVE has enabled photographers to take the power of the studio anywhere. The THREE is the middle sibling of the range in both cost, power output, and size, but all of which offer the same great design, light quality, and user experience.

The Elinchrom THREE was released in October 2023 and has been marketed towards photographers on the move, with a special focus on wedding photography. This makes sense as the THREE offers a little extra than a Speedlight, and its tiny form factor makes it easy to carry around. The battery is integrated into the unit which allows for the smaller size, but this also means that it can work with external power banks via USB-C, enabling shooting from morning to first dance.

Although weddings may be a slice of the target market, it is certainly not the only scenario in which the THREE can be utilized. As you can see further on in the review, I used it on location for an environmental portrait, and in a studio making it extremely versatile. I also have no reason to believe that this wouldn't be a fantastic option for fashion shoots on location, with the powerful HSS and fast recycle times. 

This review came at the perfect time for me as I am in the market for a new portable off-camera flash that could be easily taken with me as an option if the location lacked enough light. Of late I have been working on assignments capturing environmental portraits and detail shots, often in environments that offer less than optimal natural light - so I was eager to test it out to see if it would become a new staple in my everyday workflow.

The Elinchrom THREE kit is on the market for $999.99 / £979.00 which includes the light, diffusion dome, tilt-head, carry bag, and Elinchrom bayonet adapter. I feel that this is a great price for a light of this caliber. It sits in between the Elinchrom ONE and FIVE in both price and power output, and out of the three I feel is the best value for money. Its nearest competitor is most likely the Profoto B10X which offers more power but is more than double the price. 

The Elinchrom THREE was released in October 2023. The light feels modern and future-proofed for HSS and TTL, and will have no issue keeping up with the faster shooting speeds on offer from the best mirrorless cameras.  

Elinchrom THREE: Design & Handling

The Elinchrom THREE is sleek and stylish and offers great design in build quality and performance output. The first thing I noticed was its compact size, measuring just 25.3 x 16.5 x 10.5 cm, around the same size as a 70-200mm telephoto lens. It was incredibly lightweight and could easily fit into my camera bag, or in the carry bag that comes with the light kit. 

The light is the first that I have used with an integrated Li-Ion battery, making it even easier to transport. The battery is charged via the USB-C port located on the underside of the light body which enables charging whilst in use, and compatibility with external power banks, for extra shooting capacity. A full battery charge enables 525 flashes at full power, and up to 11,250 flashes at minimum power. 

The menu system is incredibly easy to use, with an intuitive touch screen to adjust settings with ease. Elinchrom has stripped settings back to the very basics, which makes navigating and changing settings so much easier.

I am not usually a fan of touchscreen controls and have it turned off on my camera, but using it on the THREE sped up my workflow. It enabled the changing of settings very quickly with just the drag of a finger, which is often needed when working in a fast-paced shooting environment. There are also physical buttons that are positioned at the rear of the light which are just as intuitive, although I found the speed of the touch screen worked better for me. 

The bulb itself is designed around an unconcealed flash tube for optimal light spread, the Elinchrom THREE ensures you experience beautiful light quality even with light shapers/modifiers from other brands. The THREE comes with a diffused dome which softens the light further whilst still offering great light spread. 

For my shoots, I also used the Elinchrom Rotalux Deep Octabox 70cm which is easily attached to the provided adapter and offers a beautifully soft light quality for portraiture. A 7-8 mm umbrella mount is included in the removable metal tilt head, making the THREE even easier to pack.  

I was extremely impressed with the build quality of both the light and the accessories, and I felt completely comfortable that they could be used in all shooting environments. Not having to worry about the kit was a substantial weight off of my shoulders, enabling the focus to be on the photography. 

Elinchrom THREE: Photo Performance

As soon as I found out I was to test and review the Elinchrom THREE, I knew I wanted to put it through its paces with a real-world test as though working with a paying client. Elinchrom has a stellar reputation for off-camera flashes and I was excited to push it to the limits, but it turned out to not have any. Being lightweight and compact I knew I wanted to shoot in multiple environments, both in the studio and on location - it handled both with ease, instantly highlighting its versatility as a major asset. 

Set up was instantaneous with the flash unit and the transmitter connecting in a matter of seconds. From there it was a matter of positioning the light to best compliment the subject and scene. This is a major factor to love about the THREE, as it allowed me to focus on what I was shooting, rather than worrying about the light connection. The ease of use further enhanced this, and changing settings via either the transmitter or the unit's touch screen was intuitive and easy.  

Shooting using off-camera flash often results in misfires and therefore missed shots, with the THREE I had zero during any of my shoots. I could rely on the flash to go when I pressed the shutter and recycle in time for my next shot, what else can you ask for? 

Another noticeable highlight for me was the bright bi-color LED modeling lamp, pictured in use below. My location shoot was in a dimly lit workshop, with no natural light. The modeling light was a lifesaver, providing bright light on my subject to enable my Fujifilm GFX 50S II to catch focus, resulting in sharp images. 

The quality of light that the THREE produced was very pleasing and complimented my subjects well. The use of the Elinchrom Rotalux Deep Octabox 70cm enhanced this further, by creating a soft diffused light. 

The one thing that I haven't touched on is the transmitter. I used both the Elinchrom Transmitter Plus and the Elinchrom Transmitter Pro, both of which worked flawlessly with the THREE. However, an important note to consider is that HSS is only compatible with the Elinchrom Transmitter Pro, so you might need to check you have the right transmitter for your needs. 

Elinchrom THREE: Sample Images

These images were taken in my makeshift home studio against a painted canvas backdrop. With the help of my daughter, we captured some one-light studio shots with the THREE placed to the camera's right, on top of a C stand angled at about 45 degrees. 

I used the THREE to feather a soft light onto the subject's face using the shadows to create mood. The THREE produced the dramatic lighting I was after and showcased further its versatility. 

Elinchrom THREE: Verdict

I shoot a lot with flash, but this may be the best and most versatile portable off-camera flash I have ever used, and that says something. I put this light through shooting in several different scenarios and it handled each one with ease, providing me with confidence that it was going to perform as expected. It produced an amazing quality of light resulting in perfectly exposed images, and the ability to use additional Elinchrom Light Shapers with the adapter enabled further versatility. 

I see this light being perfect for anyone who wants to take their first steps with an off-camera flash and take a step up from the traditional speedlight. I plan to incorporate one or two in my location camera kit, for portraiture, fashion, and documentary work in the future due to the quality it produces and the reliance on it doing what I need it to.

Overall this is a fantastic tool to enhance both studio and location photography!

The Elinchrom THREE is designed to be easily portable weighing only 1.6kg, yet still packing a punch by providing 261Ws of power, and powered by its integrated Li-Ion battery, it enables up to 525 full-power flashes from a single charge. This makes it ideal for full-day shoots on the go, such as weddings and on-location fashion. 

With fashion photography in mind, the THREE offers a very fast recycle time of just 1.2 seconds at full power, guaranteeing you don't miss that next killer pose during a high-paced shoot! 

However, if the need for more power does come, perhaps from a particularly extensive shoot, the THREE can connect to a USB-C power source to continue shooting regardless of the battery’s power level. The THREE has a mount that can support Elinchrom OCF, Profoto bayonet, and traditional Elinchrom light shapers, enabling beautiful light quality whatever the occasion.

In my experience in teaching lighting workshops, the main turn-off for beginners navigating settings. Elinchrom has removed this worry with a touchscreen interface and quick menu, which it hopes will guarantee 'an opportunity to capture the moment is never missed'.

Performance

Setting the light up, connecting it to the transmitter and operating the menu system are all really easy with the Elinchrom Five. It takes just a minute to sync the light to the remote trigger on your camera (either the Skyport or the Skyport plus) and basic operations can be controlled from there. 

Whether you're shooting fashion or action, the Elinchrom Five keeps up incredibly well - not once did the flash not fire when it should and out of 50 similar photos, not a single one looked different. It's incredibly reliable and when shooting on a lower flash power the recycle time is even faster than 1.6 seconds. 

When it comes to brightness there is no denying this light is plenty bright enough - in fact in some scenarios, it was almost too bright even shooting at the lowest power setting of 0.1. I used it with a silver, 110cm umbrella which made the light look high-key and very contrasty however if you shot with a large softbox, it would spread the light a lot better and cast much softer shadows. 

Unlike some flash heads, the Elinchrom Five is extremely easy to navigate. The simple menu system can be controlled using the arrow keys and dial on the back of the light and in the menu you can set things such as group, channel, whether it beeps and you can assign a different colour to each group (useful when you're working with multiple lights with different power settings). 

Build and handling

The first things that stands out about the Elinchrom Five is how well made it feels - the casing is made from a solid plastic and it comes in a padded carry case that can fit in the umbrella reflector, spare battery, charger and trigger. 

At 3kg it isn't the lightest Elinchrom lightest but it's a fairly average weight for a light of this flash power. In terms of dimensions, it certainly has weight to it but this helps it keep stable when shooting although if shooting on location I recommend getting sandbags for extra weight as you don't want it getting caught in the wind especially if you're using a large umbrella. The stem for mounting the light is also quite close to the front rather than central so the light is slightly off-balance but it's not a massive issue especially when shooting indoors. 

One of the few issues I had with the Elinchrom Five was the size of the umbrella hole. I have a Calumet own brand shoot through umbrella but the stem of it is a hexagon shape rather than rounded so it wouldn't fit in the hole. Replacing an umbrella isn't too expensive but it's worth checking whether your current light shapers will fit.

Elinchrom Five: Verdict

There is no denying there Elinchrom Five is a powerful, versatile monolight that suits both shooting in the studio and on location. I never used it above the 1.5 power setting as it was so bright but I was never able to test them in the midday sun for example as we haven't had much recently. 

It's an extremely consistent light, out of over 200 photos the flash only didn't fire twice (and that could well have been down to the fact I was using the Sony app on my phone to take the self-portraits). Color is also consistent which is very important, especially when shooting for e-commerce. 

It feels well built, there are hundreds of light shaping tools to use with it thanks to its S mount fitting, they are easy to click into place and there is a locking mechanism so you can be sure they won't come off mid-shoot. It's not cheap but it's definitely worth the money - my one gripe is the positioning of the stem that attached it to a light stand but it's not something that would put me off buying it.

Elinchrom has officially launched its brand new battery powered monolight, the Elinchrom Five. Designed for photographers who prefer to work without wires, it’s perfect for shooting on location or in a studio thanks to its consistent, high-quality illumination. 

The Elinchrom Five – which follows the launch of the fantastic Elinchrom One last year – is a 500-watt monolight capable of 450 full-power flashes on a single charge, but when shooting at a much lower power setting it’s capable of firing thousands of flashes. It can be plugged into a USB-C power source so you can continue shooting even when the battery is low, which is perfect for when using in a studio environment.

Unlike some studio lights, the Elinchrom Five benefits from a really simple menu layout that can be controlled with buttons on the back of the flash head or from the Elinchrom Skyport Plus trigger. With a lightning-fast recycle time of just 1.6s, photographers are able to shoot almost constantly even on full power – and the lower the power setting, the faster the recycle time. 

It features a 26W bi-color LED modeling lamp with an adjustable color temperature from 2,700K to 6,500K, an output of 4,000 lumens, and a CRI rating of 95, making it ideal for static video interviews or shooting in dark environments. Photographers can use the Elinchrom Five with a range of S-type light shapers, such as the Elinchrom Rotalux softboxes or an umbrella, and the unconcealed flash tube ensures that light spread is optimum.

A flashgun gives far better results than the comparatively weak pop-up flash found on some cameras, with a more powerful burst of light, and often the ability to bounce light from walls or ceilings. But, for even more creative control, a flash trigger enables you to position the flashgun exactly where you want it, completely separately from the camera.

It is a top choice for photographers already invested in the Godox flash ecosystem, and is available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and OM/Panasonic camera systems.

The standout feature of the X3 is its user-friendly, high-clarity OLED touchscreen interface, which makes it a doddle to navigate menus and view settings. The trigger supports a full range of advanced features, including reliable 2.4GHz wireless transmission up to 100m, TTL (Through-The-Lens) automatic exposure, Manual and Multi-Flash modes, as well as High-Speed Sync (HSS) up to 1/8000 sec. I found performance to be reliable and consistent, keeping all flashes perfectly in sync.

The Godox XPro TTL/HSS flash trigger is a long-standing, robust, and versatile wireless trigger that offers exceptional value for money. Available in dedicated versions for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Micro Four Thirds, and Pentax cameras (be sure to buy the correct one), it is built on the reliable 2.4GHz Godox X wireless system, providing a powerful and consistent triggering range of up to 100m.

The trigger excels in functionality, supporting a wealth of flash modes, including TTL (Through-The-Lens) metering, HSS (High-Speed Sync) up to 1/8000 sec, and Multi-Flash (strobe) mode. A unique feature is the TCM (TTL Convert Manual) mode, which uses an initial TTL reading to set a manual power level, providing a solid starting point for precise adjustments. It can control up to 16 flash groups across 32 channels.

The design features a large, backlit, mono LCD screen and a conventional set of buttons and dials, which some users prefer over the newer touchscreen interfaces. The build quality is solid, but the interface is somewhat dated. It is powered by a pair of AA batteries, although I found the battery gauge to be inaccurate for lower-voltage rechargeable NiMH cells. How to choose a wireless flash trigger

A decent radio-frequency flash trigger should provide up to 100 meters of range and the ability to separate your flashes into groups that fire at different power settings. This allows you to replicate a studio flash head setup for a lower cost, with separate key, fill, and accent lights. It does mean you’ll often require an extra receiver for every additional flashgun you want to incorporate; however, some more recent flashguns come with built-in receivers, so check before buying any extra equipment you might not need.

Different triggers will have different features. Some will have Through The Lens (TTL) metering functionality, which automatically reads the lighting conditions and adjusts power output accordingly, while others are manual-only. Some will also be able to use High-Speed Sync (HSS), which enables the use of flash in tandem with fast shutter speeds, allowing you to freeze fast action. Depending on the kind of images you shoot, this may or may not be necessary.

Wireless flash triggers are usually designed to work with a single camera brand, with variations specifically for Canon, Nikon, Sony, or other camera systems, so double-check you've got the right version before you click 'Buy'. Universal triggers that are more broadly compatible forgo exotic features like TTL or HSS.

Here are five things to keep in mind when shopping for and using wireless flash triggers:

1. Stand back
The kits I've featured use radio frequency triggering, which, unlike cheaper infrared systems, usually work at a range of up to 100m without needing a direct line of sight.

2. Channel hopping
With radio frequency triggering comes possible interference from other RF devices. A system with multiple channel options or channel coding will lock out uninvited airwaves.

3. TTL triggering
A triggering system that wirelessly transmits TTL metering signals is a must if you rely on the fire-and-forget simplicity of a TTL flashgun, but these triggers inevitably carry a premium.

4. Stay put
Don’t fancy wasting time running between multiple flashguns to set their power? More advanced triggers enable you to remotely control flashgun settings from the transmitter.

5. Sync speed
Typically, a flash trigger will enable a shutter speed up to 1/250 sec, but top-end systems boast high-speed sync with compatible flashguns, enabling up to 1/8000 sec shutter speeds.

The best on and off camera flash for photography

The Godox V100 is not a complete kit – it's a single flash head that could be used as a building block in a custom kit, if you prefer to work that way. This head builds on the strong foundation of the V1 by adding some appealing new features, though it does come with a higher price tag. Whether this added cost is justified depends on your shooting style. The new USB-C battery charging is a tempting upgrade for those who already own V1 units, and the new touchscreen interface is leagues ahead of the older model.

The Godox V100 is an incredibly versatile and useful on- and off-camera flash. It is currently the best flash that can be used both atop a camera via a hotshoe or wirelessly triggered. Its consistency and power are more than sufficient for portrait, event, and wedding photography. It is also available for pretty much every camera system currently on the market.

The clip-on fill light, one of the standout additions, looks very cool, but felt more like a gimmick in practice. It didn’t suit my photography style, giving my images a look reminiscent of a disposable camera’s built-in flash, but this might be more useful to others. Another highlight – the ability to shoot 100 continuous shots at full power – is impressive but not something I would use often. However, if you shoot a lot of high-volume images, you may find it beneficial.

Best for design

If you're looking for the best studio flash, this portable off-camera model is a standout option – and it's available in a two-head kit. I’ve used many flashes, but this one is by far the most versatile. After testing it across various scenarios, I can confidently say it performed flawlessly every time. The light quality it produces is exceptional, leading to perfectly exposed images with minimal effort. What makes it even more versatile is its compatibility with Elinchrom Light Shapers, using an adapter for even more control over your lighting setup.

Best for quick on-location setup

The Gofox AD200Pro II is an exceptional light source. Once again, this is a single light rather than a kit, so you'll need to factor in the cost of more than one – however, the good new is that Godox has made this head ridiculously affordable.

Godox has integrated numerous features into this small, lightweight, and affordable off-camera flash, making it a must-have in every photographer's toolkit. The performance and usability of this new model have significantly improved, but the standout feature is undoubtedly that aforementioned price – it's truly a fantastic deal!

Similar to its predecessor, the AD200Pro II serves as the ideal entry-level light for those venturing into off-camera flash photography, and this version makes it even simpler. Its power output is more than sufficient to act as a key light, even in settings with minimal ambient light. Additionally, the enhanced modeling lamp significantly aids in achieving focus in low-light conditions.

I primarily use it as a fill light, and in combination with my Godox AD600 Pro II, I can easily create a professional two-light setup that delivers maximum quality with minimal effort.

The best LED panel for photography

This powerful, hugely versatile yet lightweight portable LED lighting panel is a radical redesign compared with the original AEOS. It gives you 16.7 million colors of light to play with, instead of just various degrees of white. And that goes for both constant lighting and flash, the latter with a high-speed sync option. The interface is also completely overhauled, with the addition of a color touchscreen that makes it quick and easy to access a huge range of lighting options, digital filters and special effects. The original AEOS was very good; the AEOS 2 is absolutely brilliant.

The AEOS 2 certainly isn’t cheap to buy, especially when you opt for the two-head kit. However, it’s a joy to use and a top performer, making it worth the money.

Best continuous lighting for photography

The Molus G200 LED light is a powerful COB light that’s perfect for studio shoots, particularly for illuminating talking-head interviews or enhancing performances like dance when paired with its music mode. Its quiet fan is a great feature, keeping noise concerns at bay for sound recordists, and the Max mode provides an additional 100W of power when you need that extra boost. However, the absence of preset animated light effects does knock it down a notch.

Some might actually find the Molus G200 to be a bit too bright for their needs. But if you’re looking at light subjects from a distance, it’s worth considering, especially since it can push its 200W default output up to a maximum of 300W. It’s better suited for professional corporate and studio filmmakers, while social media content creators may find the smaller and more affordable Molus X100 a better fit.

Overall, while it’s a fantastic light with some great features, its brightness and price point make it more appropriate for professional setups. Also, be aware that it's not sold as part of a kit, so you may need to factor in the cost of more than one.

How to choose the best photography lighting

The best photography lighting kit for you depends on what you're planning to shoot. Are you expecting to stay in the studio, or do you anticipate loading the kit up and taking it out on location? There are lighting kits that are great for both purposes. You also want to consider whether you'll mostly be using flash for stills, and how bothered you are about having a continuous light for video.

Then there's also the question of budget. There are lighting kits and panels across the price spectrum, so it's worth considering the best you can afford. This guide includes various types of lighting, from plug-in studio lights to battery-powered lighting kits for use on location, as well as continuous LED lighting panels.

If you want something simpler and more portable, it's worth checking out our buying guide to the best flashguns. Flashguns are handy and fast in a pinch, but they do have their limits in terms of how much control you can exert over the light.

How we test photography lighting

When we test photography lighting kits, we're looking for optimal performance and consistent results. We start by assessing the kit's components, checking things like bulb wattage, reflector condition, and power output. We'll let up the lights in a controlled environment and use a light meter to measure the illumination levels at different distances and angles. We'll then experiment with various lighting setups and modifiers like softboxes or umbrellas to see how they affect the quality and direction of the light. We pay attention to color temperature, shadows and overall coverage.

We caught up with The Flash Centre on stand F406 at The Photography Show at the NEC in Birmingham, UK, to get hands-on with some of their new products newly launched at the show.

The Flash Centre, which also distributes brands such as Tether Tools, Phottix, Frio, Benq, Spekular, and Hahnemule amongst others, showed us new products launched for the first time yesterday at TPS from Elinchrom, Stella Pro and Calibrite at this year's The Photography Show.

Elinchrom FIVE: battery-powered flash head

This is our expert guide to the best photography lighting kits, and you're bound to find some Elinchrom kit in there.

Elinchrom has revealed the new battery-powered Elinchrom FIVE at The Photography Show. Head over to The Flash Centre’s stand F406 to get a first look at the high-powered 522 W/s monolight flash head. It runs off battery that can last for 82 watt-hours, or alternatively can be plugged into the mains if used indoors. It's claimed to fully charge via USB-C in an hour and a half and last for 450 full power flashes from a single charge, though we are yet to fully test it out.

It’s said to be color accurate within +50 or -50 Kelvins for super accurate colors and weighs 3Kg in total when the battery is attached. It features the Elinchrom mount to attach modifiers and accessories and is capable of TTL and HSS with a transmitter attached. A bi-color 27W LED modeling lamp is also built-in allowing users to get an idea of where the light is falling when shooting both stills and video making it an even more versatile light.

The Elinchrom Five is available to see exclusively at The Photography Show in the UK with a worldwide launch commencing next month, when it will retail for £1,619.

New Stella Pro Reflex and CLx10 lights

Stella Pro revealed two new lights at The Photography Show, the Reflex and the more powerful CLx10. The Reflex is a small handheld light capable of delivering up to 6,000 lumens in Continuous Mode and 12,000 lumens in Burst Mode with the battery handle. It's capable of instantly switching between digital and burst lighting and has an ultra-portable and rugged design weighing less than 2lbs so is ideal for weddings, action, sports and portraiture photography, and videography. It has a show discount of £87, so you can pick one up for £925 on stand F406.

The CLx10 is a bigger light with a built-in battery that can last up to 245 minutes and has an IP65 weatherproof rating making it great for rugged terrain and adventures in all weathers. The built-in RF receiver allows wireless control of any number of CLx10 lights from the wireless remote and has a high Output COB 'Chip on Board' LED. It has a special TPS price of £1,075, a saving of £237 so head over to stand F406 to check it out.

Calibrite Color Checker Passport Duo

Calibrite showed us a new product the Color Checker Passport Duo which combines the best parts of the Classic Nano and Classic Mini Color Checkers for photo and video and will be a great all-in-one accessory for hybrid professionals that need the versatility and color accuracy for both still images and video footage, and works seamlessly with the Calibrite calibration apps like CC Profiler, CC Studio and the soon to be launched Calibrite Profiler software (more below). The Color Checker Passport Duo retails for £202.

Also on show was a demo of the new Calibrate Profiler software, an upgraded piece of software that combines the previous CC Profiler and CC Studio apps for a more streamlined workflow. It will run on the same Xrite engine and be a free upgrade for users of the Color Checker screen calibrators, though there will be a paid upgrade path for users of other Xrite screen calibration devices such as the Colormunki. More details on the Calibrite Profiler to be announced next month.

The Elinchrom One is a portable, powerful, high performance monolight that's about the size of a 70-200mm lens. Offering everything from high speed sync to fast charging and recycle times to the ability to use USB laptop power banks to keep on shooting, this is a flash that promises to move seamlessly from studio to location. 

For flash aficionados, the Elinchrom One will be compared to the Profoto B10 – and while its rival is a more powerful option (on paper, at least), it also costs almost twice as much. It also features a budget challenger in the form of the Godox AD300. 

So the question is, is Elinchrom's portable powerhouse "the one", and can it challenge the best lighting kits on the market right now?

Elinchrom One: Key features

The Elinchrom one is compatible with with Profoto modifiers straight out of the box, and with Elinchrom modifiers via an included adapter, so you can use it with a variety of light shapers to suit the work you're doing. 

In terms of power, at minimum it delivers 7Ws and a recycle time of just 0.06 sec, and at maximum output it gives you 131Ws and takes 0.9 sec to recycle. Elinchrom states that you can achieve 725 full power flashes per charge of the integrated battery, which takes 100 minutes to recharge. 

And you can keep on shooting when the battery is dry, by plugging in a USB source – either via mains power or a USB power bank, which is an absolute godsend when working on location (and isn't possible on the Profoto or Godox).

The One offers high speed sync, with a duration of 1/7,000 sec at minimum power and 1/625 at full output. It also boasts a 20W modeling light with adjustable color temperature, which is actually sufficient to provide a kiss of light for some videography purposes. 

It has a beautiful and intuitive touch menu system, enabling you to quickly and easily adjust everything from color temperature to modeling light power to even the color of the illuminated Elinchrom logo on the side – which not only lights up to indicate charge levels, but can also be used to differentiate multiple heads on a shoot (so one can be green, one can be red and so on for ease of reference). 

Elinchrom One: Performance

The first thing worth mentioning about the One, specifically in comparison with the B10, is the power performance. While the Profoto is, on paper, more powerful at 250Ws, anecdotally we found that its output was only marginally brighter.

This is likely due to the design of the respective models. While the Profoto features a flat head, the Elinchrom has a bulbous bulb that projects from the front of the body, meaning that you get a much bigger spill of light – and this actually fills modifiers better than the narrower beam projected by the B10, delivering less hotspots and far more 'effective' power than the 131Ws rating would suggest.

Indeed, Elinchrom claims that the engineering of the One is so efficient that it delivers an output comparable with 200Ws lights. While only anecdotal rather than empirical, our experience does bear this out. 

The flash also exceeds its specs in terms of battery performance. We got almost 1,000 shots before needing to plug in a USB power source, and again – you can keep shooting with the One while using one of the best laptop power banks (Elinchrom sells its own 20,000mAh bank that adds an additional 1,100 full power discharges). 

Something worth noting, however, is that the official Elinchrom mains charger actually 'blew up' while charging one of our test units; while there was no smoke or fire, there was a loud bang and an unpleasant smell. These things can and do happen with all kinds of electronics, but we would be remiss not to point it out here. 

While the One can be used seamlessly with Elinchrom and Profoto modifiers alike, the included diffusion dome is a surprisingly good performer for many situations – especially if you use tried and true tricks like bouncing it off walls, reflectors or V-flats – meaning you can get maximum results with minimal kit.

In addition, because the unit is small and light enough to hold, it can easily be used handheld either with your off hand or by an assistant to manually direct the light (the mounting foot can even be removed to make it easier to hold). 

It proved more than capable of overpowering the sun for outdoor shooting, and performed spectacularly as a studio light – and the fact that it really does have the footprint of a 70-200mm lens means that it takes up minimal space in either setting.

Elinchrom One: Verdict

The Elinchrom One is a fantastic flash unit for freezing motion, overpowering the sun with high speed sync, shooting products and portraits in studio or events and lifestyle on location. 

Its tiny form factor means that it takes up minimal room in your kitbag, and makes it easy to handhold when assistants or stands aren't an option. Its USB-C battery has enough life to see you through demanding shoots, and once it's empty you can either plug it into the mains or a power bank to keep on firing frames. 

The Profoto B10 packs more power on paper, but in practical terms we're not sure that it justifies the significantly higher price tag. For our money, the Elinchrom One – fully compatible with Profoto as well as Elinchrom modifiers – is the one we'd reach for whether in studio or on the road.

Elinchrom has launched its new Elinchrom ONE portable off-camera flash. The ONE is intended to be a true go-anywhere light source, weighing just 1.5kg / 3.3lb, measuring a similar size to a 70-200mm lens, and featuring extensive weather protection.

A major part of the incredible compactness and low weight is the ONE's internal Li-ion rechargeable battery. This has the capacity for 725 full-power flashes on a single charge and can be recharged from any USB-C power source, eliminating the need for spare batteries or chargers. What's more, with Elinchrom's Active Charging feature, the battery can be charged while the flash head is in use, regardless of the battery's charge level.

The ONE's flash tube is unconcealed to boost light output and enhance beam spread, and can be fitted with Elinchrom's newly-developed OCF modifier mount, enabling the use of most Profoto OCF light sharpers like spill-kills, barn doors and brollies.

Although max light output is quoted at a relatively low 131 Ws, watt seconds is a measure of power capacity rather than light output. Elinchrom states that actual measured light output from the ONE is equivalent to the illumination from most 200+ Ws flashes. At 1 meter (3.3ft) and 100 ISO, the ONE is rated to achieve f/11.9. With the Diffusion Dome attached, and combined with the HP Reflector, Elinchrom claims the achievable f-stop increases to f/45.2.

Other noteworthy features include an easy to read touch-screen rear panel and newly-designed menu interface to simplify settings adjustment, while a bi-color LED modelling lamp can output 3000 lumens, with color temperature adjustable between 2700k and 6500k at a CRI of 95.

High speed sync of up to 1/8000s is also available to help freeze motion or overpower ambient light, and the ONE incorporates intelligent Pro-Active cooling that learns your shooting style and adapts cooling for maximum effect at minimal noise levels. Even the tilt head is removable, making the ONE more suited to hand-held use.

Elinchrom has built a strong reputation in studio and location flash systems, for robust build quality, top-drawer performance, reliability and ease of use. Mains-powered D-Lite monobloc heads and kits have long been a favorite of discerning photographers, thanks to their compact portability, simplicity and superb lighting quality, especially when combined with Elinchrom’s excellent range of softboxes and other light modifiers. However, based on conventional rather than IGBT (Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor) technology, D-Lite heads lack advanced modes like TTL flash metering and an ‘Action’ option, which fires a short-duration flash for freezing action. The new Elinchrom ELC 125 and ELC 500 heads add these as well as many other upgrades. 

Key features

IGBT technology enables the versatility of advanced shooting modes, but it comes with a catch. There’s a real technical challenge in maintaining the consistency of colour temperature throughout the power range, especially at low-power settings. Consistent colour quality has always been a particularly strong point of Elinchrom flash heads and, thankfully, it’s been passed down to the new IGBT heads.

The 125 and 500 heads have power ratings of 131Ws and 522Ws respectively, the latter being somewhat larger and heavier at 2.5kg compared with the smaller unit’s 2kg. Unlike the older, more conventional D-Lite heads, there’s a much larger overall power range, both heads enabling a minimum output of just 7Ws. The lower end of the scale is particularly useful if you want to use wide apertures to enable a shallow depth of field, or you don’t want to overpower low-level ambient lighting. With D-Lite kits, you’d have to resort to using an RX One head for subtle output, coupled with RX 2 or RX 4 heads for when you need more power.

On their own, or with a basic trigger, both heads offer a wide range of features. The streamlined interface combines a full-color OLED screen with a simple rotary dial and pushbutton controls. For example, left and right arrow buttons enable you to alter the flash intensity in full f/stop increments, whereas the rotary dial allows for 1/10th or 1/3rd f/stop fine adjustments. There’s a menu button at the bottom left of the back panel which can be easily navigated by turning the rotary knob and pressing it to select and change settings. The menu itself includes many customization options, including the facility to optically slave the head from a flashgun, ignoring any pre-flash pulses. Opposite at the bottom right of the back panel is a modeling lamp button, above which there’s a ‘favourite’ button, which you can assign to your preferred function for quick and easy access.

The modeling lamp itself is a powerful 20W LED, equivalent to a 120W halogen bulb, and it has a high-quality CRI 92 (Color Rendering Index) rating. Options include on, off, proportional and variable free control. Output power is sufficient for constant lighting in video and stills, with a measured power in our tests of EV 9.1 at one metre, equating to 1/60th of a second at f/2.8 with a sensitivity of ISO 100.

The menu system also gives easy access to alternative standard and ‘Action’ flash modes, the latter delivering ultra-short flash durations of as little as 1/7750 and 1/9430 seconds with the 125 and 500 heads respectively. Action mode is available from the lowest power setting right through to the maximum, with no loss of output intensity. The only compromise is that the short flash duration comes slightly less colour accuracy. The menu also gives easy access to ‘fast’ or ‘eco’ recycle speeds, both of which are very quick.

Add an Elinchrom Skyport Pro trigger, which is available in no less than seven different options to cover a wide range of camera makes, and you can stretch the versatility even further. The wireless trigger works seamlessly with RF transceivers built into the flash head. For quick and easy flash exposures on the fly, many will find the TTL flash metering option a big bonus. For those who like to stay in control and adjust the individual strengths of multiple heads for best effect, auto TTL can provide a good starting point, as you can easily switch to manual and the auto settings are retained for reference. 

The Skyport Pro trigger also adds the availability of high-speed sync, so you can use the flash up to and including the fastest shutter speed your camera has to offer, typically 1/4000th or 1/8000th of a second. You’ll need to use high-speed sync with the normal rather than Action flash mode, but it enables you to freeze motion even when combining flash with bright ambient lighting by selecting a fast shutter speed. You can also overcome bright ambient lighting and even direct sunlight, to darken the surroundings.

Build and handling

The tough metal chassis, heavy-duty handle and all aspects of the mount and other components feel of fully pro-grade quality. The rotary dial and pushbutton switches have a pleasant, tactile feel and even the locking arm for the tilt adjustment operates with particularly smooth effectiveness.

When using a remote trigger, you can take advantage of the ‘auto-on’ feature which enables the flash to be activated from standby mode on demand. A clever design flourish is that the four different groups to which each head can be assigned are made easily recognisable. That’s thanks to an illuminated logo on the side of each head which changes colour from blue to orange to red to green, as you cycle through the four groups. Low and high intensities are available (or you can turn it off) and the colour coding is also replicated on the head’s rear OLED screen. Similarly, five different volume levels are available for the ready and error beeps, and you can also turn these off altogether.

Nobody likes noisy cooling fans but some forced air throughput can be necessary to ensure cool running, especially as the heads have a duty cycle of 3,000 or more portraits per day. Thankfully, not only are the fans fairly quiet, but they’re also driven by a ‘smart pro-active cooling’ system that can learn your typical shooting methods and adapt the cooling cycle for optimum efficiency and minimum fuss and bother. Suffice it to say that the fans are only switched on when necessary, and don’t spin any faster than needed.

Naturally, the new heads are designed to be fully compatible with Elinchrom’s legendary range of softboxes and other modifiers. An additional bonus is that, while most Elinchrom heads are limited to a proprietary 7mm brolly shaft, the ELC 125 and 500 can accept both this size and the more industry-standard 8mm shaft as well.

Lab results

Performance is every bit as good as you could hope for. The intensity of flash output is entirely reliable and consistent on a shot-to-shot basis, and color temperature remains highly accurate throughout the entire power range. TTL metering works with similarly impressive reliability and consistency, and even the LED modeling lamps make for an excellent constant light source.

Recycle speeds are very quick, even in ‘eco’ mode, and the cooling system enables excellent stamina. Maximum power output is as expected from 125Ws and 500Ws heads, with absolutely no drop-off in Action mode. Maximum output power does take a bit of a hit in high-speed sync mode, but this is entirely normal.

Power performance

The tables below show the progressive power output through the range, measured as a Gn (Guide number) in metres at ISO 100. Actual intensities will alter depending on the fitment of different reflectors and other light shapers.

Recycling performance

The table below shows the recycling speeds at different power settings on the two heads, measured in seconds. Recycling speeds are virtually instantaneous through most of the power range. The figures for Eco and Fast modes were measured with a mains supply voltage of 230V. Speeds are nearly halved when using a 120V supply.

Verdict

The ELC 125 and ELC 500 heads are available on their own, complete with a standard 16cm reflector and mains cable, or as twin head kits with the same power rating or one of each. Compared with D-Lite RX One and RX 4 heads and kits, the new models are about twice the price. 

You’ll also need to buy a separate Elinchrom Skyport Pro trigger to make full use of the available features, via the built-in Skyport transceivers. However, once you factor in the enhanced build quality and performance of the new ELC heads, along with their extra versatility with Action, HSS and TTL modes, they’re still great value for money. Ultimately, this new system from Elinchrom is simply superb, and worth every penny.

Elinchrom Quadra ELB 400 review

An indication of just how far the development of battery-powered studio flash packs has come is to compare Elinchrom’s original Ranger portable models with the latest version of its Quadra compacts. The size difference is very significant, as is the weight – even compared to the first incarnation of the Quadra, shaving off in the order of a kilogram – yet the Quadra ELB 400 still delivers up to 424 joules of flash power.

This represents a pretty appealing combination of portability and flash power, not to mention the various enhanced capabilities that Elinchrom has given the ELB 400 and which are designed to increase its versatility when shooting, particularly in outdoor locations. As per the original Ranger philosophy, the ELB 400 has a ruggedized design, including very substantial rubberized bumpers along all exposed edges, a membrane-covered control panel, and stoppers for the flash head outlets, sync cable connection and microUSB port. With the battery pack fitted, the unit’s total weight is still a very manageable two kilograms, while the Quadra heads weigh in at a mere 280 grams. A two-head kit is available with its own custom hardcase (soft bag options are available) and the pleasant surprise is just how easy this is to carry around even over quite long distances… no need to go into training beforehand.

The battery itself is a 14.4 volts lithium-ion pack (thankfully gel cels are being consigned to history) with an improved capacity which now gives up to 350 flashes at full power. If you’re using a lower output this number now climbs into the thousands. Lithium-ion also allows for faster recharging… now just 90 minutes for a full tank. The battery unit clips quickly and easily to the base of the flash pack so if you are on a long shoot, the interruption while changing packs is minimal. The two-head kit includes a spare battery.

Power play

The ELB 400 has two flash head outlets with 2:1 asymmetrical power distribution. The flash power can be wound down all the way from 424 joules down to just 21 joules across the two outlets – or 14 from Outlet A and just seven at Outlet B. 

When the Quadra Action head is used, the shortest flash duration is 1/2800 second at maximum power using Outlet A, but 1/4000 second when using two heads. It’s even shorter – at 1/5700 second – when using just Outlet B’s max power (i.e. 140 joules). Recycle times can be as short as 0.17 seconds. Exposure and colour balance stability are excellent across the full power range.

Clearly Elinchrom has Profoto’s B2 in its sights here, giving the ELB 400 similar sporting credentials for shooting fast-moving subjects. Auto dumping means lower power settings are re-adjusted virtually instantaneously. There’s a new, contrastier OLED-type display panel which includes a six-stage level indicator for battery power, but conveniently the batteries also have their own LED-type capacity indicators so this can still be checked when they’re off the pack. Despite the increased capacity, obviously battery power is still precious so there are a number of management options for setting stand-by and auto switch-off delays, the modelling lamps in the heads and the recycling time. A handy ‘Statistics’ display option shows the flash count (for monitoring tube life) and pack’s total running time.

Operations are performed entirely via push-buttons with easier-to-navigate menus, and the ELB 400 also gets a new set of flash modes – strobo (from one to ten flashes per second for up to five seconds), sequence (up to 20 units) and delay (i.e. for second curtain sync). The standard cable and photocell sync options are provided (the latter adjustable for preflashing), but additionally Elinchrom’s EL-Skyport radio frequency receiver is built-in and provides up to 20 channels in four groups. The ELB 400 is supplied with an EL-Skyport Speed RF transmitter, which also allows for the remote control of power settings.

Importantly, the built-in receiver is compatible with the next-gen EL-Skyport Transmitter Plus which has an extended range of 200 metres, much-improved controllability, a tilt/swivel head and uses standard AA-size batteries (this transmitter is supplied in some of the kit options offered by distributor Kayell Australia).

Heads up

As noted earlier, the Quadra flash heads are remarkable for their lightness of weight, and this is partially achieved by replacing the conventional halogen modelling lamp with an LED source. Rated at 20 watts, this is the equivalent of a 50 watts halogen lamp and its running time can be preset from the pack for durations of one to 60 seconds (the default is 15 seconds) or, more conveniently in some situations, left on continuously.

Flash tubes are user-replaceable and here there’s the choice of a standard Quadra Pro head or the Action head, which has a fully-circular tube for shorter flash durations up to 1/2800 second at full power. The Action head is not just for high-speed applications, it works with the latest leaf-shutter lenses in digital medium camera systems which allow for flash sync at speeds of up to 1/1600 (Phase One) or 1/2000 second (Hasselblad). 

The Quadra heads have a shallow bayonet-fit reflector dish which, in turn, can be fitted with a clip-on diffuser (that also doubles as a protective cover). Alternatively, an adaptor ring – which also incorporates a reflector – can be fitted to provide compatibility with Elinchrom’s standard range of light-shaping accessories.

Verdict

While the ELB 400 is smaller, lighter and faster than its predecessors, it’s still more of a dual-purpose unit than, say, the Profoto B2. While the latter offers the distinct advantage of TTL exposure control, it’s primarily designed for the great outdoors and, more specifically, shooting action with very short flash durations. Thanks to its higher power (and hence wider output range) and increased battery capacity, the Elinchrom pack works equally as well on location or in the studio. The capacity to fit standard accessories also helps in the latter situation while, in addition to the sheer portability, the availability of extension cables (up to ten metres in length) further increases its potential versatility in the former. The pricing is also competitive.

Profoto is currently the big deal in this sector because of the sheer convenience of having TTL exposure control, but the Elinchrom ELB 400 still represents a viable alternative to both the B1 and B2. It’s much more powerful than the B2 and more flexible in a multi-light set-up than a pair of monobloc-style B1s. It’s also very easy to use with a realistic battery life, fast flash durations at useful power levels, and convenience features like being able to run the modelling lamps for as long as they’re needed. As a highly capable all-rounder in portable professional lighting, the Elinchrom ELB 400 is hard to beat.

Studio flash experts Elinchrom have teamed up with the LED masters at Light & Motion to produce the Elinchrom ELM8: a portable yet highly powerful continuous location light.

Continuous lighting is great for shooting video, but is also a useful alternative to a flash when shooting stills, as it effectively gives you a live preview of the lighting characteristics you're shooting with, so there's no need to work out exposure settings or be at the mercy of TTL accuracy.

Headline specs for the ELM8 are a dazzling max power output of 8000 Lumens/16320 Lux at 1m. The built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery is good for a runtime of 50 to 245 min, and there's an external power option if needed.

The powerful COB LED in the ELM8 emits a 5600K colour temperature and is capable of a high colour rendering index of 93. Elinchrom also claims these figures should remain consistent at all power levels, with no risk of any flickering - something that can plague video.

The ELM8 is compatible with all Elinchrom Q-Mount accessories, including the Q-Portalite Octa and Square umbrellas, as well as the Q-Wide Reflector and Q-Reflector Grid. An optional diffuser, fresnel, barn doors, and gel holder can also be had, plus there's an optional remote control, so you can control the ELM8 from up to 100m away.

Adding to the ELM8's go-anywhere ability is its IP54 water resistance, and the light will even resist a drop from up to 1 metre. At 20.5cm long and 9.6cm in diameter, the ELM8 has been  purposefully designed to match the dimensions of a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, so should easily fit in most shoulder bags and backpacks.
