Sony’s new every-genre 25x bridge camera hasn’t even begun shipping yet, but the Sony RX10 V has already clawed its way up to the top of best-seller lists. The new RX10 V tops US retailer B&H’s list of top trending cameras for July.

The Sony RX10 V’s early rise to the top likely doesn’t come as a surprise for fans of the format – many were disappointed when Sony discontinued the RX10 IV. But then in July, Sony annoucened it’s sucecssor, adding a large-sensor option to the bridge camera format that’s popular for photographers who want a long reach without a mirrorless camera.

While compact cameras are seeing a resurgence in trends, the bridge-style RX10 V feels more like a small DSLR – but it’s considerably more compact than carrying a 24mm, 600mm and macro mirrorless lenses.

The RX10 V’s dominance before it begins shipping in early August suggests a steep number of pre-orders, suggesting the price jump compared to the early model wasn’t enough to dissuade fans of the large sensor super zoom.

Screen-free cameras are rising in trends

But what’s surprising are the cameras that follow the RX10 V on B&H’s trending list. The RX10 V is followed by the Camp Snap CS-Pro, an affordable retro compact camera with a screen-free design that caters to digital minimalists, and the odd little Godox C100 Mini, a low-fi camera that looks more like an instant film frame than a traditional camera.

The rise of the Camp Snap CS-Pro hints at the growing craving for capturing memories without the distraction of a smartphone screen. The CS-Pro comes from the company that originally launched as a way for kids to take a camera to screen-free summer camps, but it feels like a far more grown-up version than the original.

I used the CS-Pro when I gave up screened cameras for nearly two weeks, and the camera delivers an ideal balance between features and simplicity. The 16MP camera has plenty of resolution, but uses a lens that still gives the images the feel of disposable film photos, particularly when using the built-in filter dial. A key selling point? The CS-Pro retails for just $99 / £90 / AU$153 / CA$141.

The CS-Pro is followed by one of the more unusual camera launches to come in 2026: The Godox C100 Mini. Like the CS-Pro, the C100 doesn’t have an LCD screen, but Godox’s first camera is essentially an oversized viewfinder used for taking snapshots.

While the C100 doesn’t look like a typical camera, Godox’s appearance on the best-seller list suggests the camera’s unusual design is more quirky than strange. The C100’s resolution is just 2MP, putting the camera firmly in the low-fi category – but that’s offset by a $45 / £39 price.

The C100 even doubles as a light meter for film photographers. DCW’s James Artius got his hands on one and aptly called it “ludicrously good fun.”

Just one mirrorless sits on the overall July trending list at B&H

The C100 and CS-Pro aren’t the only surprises on the list – the trending list for all camera categories oddly only includes one mirrorless camera for July, the new Sony A7R VI that mixes the A7R-series’ high resolution with a snappy 30 fps burst speed. The Kodak Charmera that has been part of an overwhelming number of B&H’s trending lists since its launch isn’t on the overall list (though it does slide in on the list of trending compact cameras).

I’m not at all surprised to see the OM System Tough TG-7 on the list either – while there are lots of waterproof compact cameras, the TG-7 uses a bright aperture and has a fantastic macro mode. The TG-7 is my favorite beach camera, so it makes sense that this 2023 launch would pop back up on a trending list mid-summer.

The remainder of the list is made up of longstanding compact camera favorites, including two Canon PowerShots, the Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A budget point-and-shoot, and the advanced Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III. The RX10 V’s compact sibling, the pocketable Sony RX100 VII with 8x zoom, also makes the July trending list.

Last time we looked at the compact camera rankings from Japanese retailer Yodobashi, we saw a brand-new release skyrocketing to No.1. Panasonic's newest premium compact, the Lumix L10, reached the top position just 12 days after its launch. Now, the retailer reports that the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III is the new No.1 compact, despite the fact that it was released nearly seven years ago.

Famously hard to find in stock, the G7 X Mark III can now command second-hand prices higher than its original retail price of $879.99 / £899.99. For example, it's currently out of stock at US retailer B&H, while used examples are listed on MPB for around $1,499.

While there's no sign of the Lumix L10 in the first half of June 2026 rankings, the best waterproof camera returns: the OM System Tough TG-7. The rankings reflect just how diverse the compact camera market has become, but product shortages remain significant, with the top three compact cameras currently on backorder at Yodobashi.com.

Japan's champion: Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III 

The Canon G7 X series has long rivalled Sony's RX100 line, but its appeal is less about winning the spec sheet and more about portability, image quality and ease of use.

The G7 Mark III combines a 1-inch sensor with a compact body and straightforward controls, making it an appealing alternative to both smartphones and larger mirrorless or DSLR cameras.

That balance has helped the G7 X become something of a cult camera. These cameras prove that you don't always need the latest specs – just tools that get out of the way and let you create.

Why is the Canon G7 X Mark III so expensive second-hand?

The G7 X Mark III's popularity has created an at-first-glance unusual situation for an older camera: used prices can now be higher than its original retail price.

But the G7 X Mark III isn't alone in benefiting from the renewed interest in older compacts.

Social media has helped fuel a point-and-shoot revival, with creators and photographers celebrating cameras that offer a different look and shooting experience from a smartphone.

The G7 X Mark III has become one of the standout examples of that trend.

With the camera now difficult to find in stock, that popularity has collided with limited supply – pushing second-hand prices well above what you'd normally expect from a camera release in 2019.

Back after three month: OM System Tough TG-7

The other notable camera in Yodobashi's latest rankings is the OM System Tough TG-7, which re-enters the Top 10 at No.10 after a three-month absence.

Unlike the G7 X Mark III, the TG-7 is built for adventure. It's waterproof, shockproof and dustproof, with a 4x zoom, RAW shooting, 4K video and useful macro mode.

It will be interesting to see if the G7 X Mark III can defend its No.1 spot, and whether the Panasonic Lumix L10 returns to the chart.

For now, though, the G7 X Mark III shows that newer doesn't always mean more desirable – especially when it comes to the point-and-shoot revival.

Its 7fps burst rate, ISO 100-32,000 range (expandable to 102,400), and weather-sealed magnesium alloy body make it well-suited for demanding shoots.

While the 1.64x 4K crop and UHS-I SD slot feel a bit outdated, the 5D Mark IV delivers excellent dynamic range, color depth, and reliability – especially for stills-focused workflows.

Once a DSLR costing around £3,629, the EOS 5D Mark IV is now a far more affordable way to access full-frame photography.

The Sony A7 V hit several best-seller charts in the months after the full-frame camera’s initial release. Now, the mirrorless is back on top of Japan’s sales charts – but squabbling with the Sony A7R VI in second place. Japan’s most popular cameras for June were led by Sony’s two most recent Alpha-series mirrorless cameras, while the effervescent viral Fujifilm X100VI sat in the third-place spot.

The data comes from Japanese retailer Map Camera, which recently ranked the sales for new (and used) cameras in June 2026.

June wasn’t the first time that the Sony A7 V has sat at the top of sales charts – the 33MP 30fps mirrorless has been a regular among the top camera sales in Japan since it launched in late 2025. But the launch of the camera’s higher-resolution sibling, the Sony A7R VI had the A7 V see-sawing out of the top spot in some charts.

In the latest data, the lower-cost A7 V – which Map Camera says "redefines the standard" – is winning out in sales. But the 66.8MP A7R VI – which boasts the same 30 fps burst speed despite the higher resolution – sits in the second-place spot.

With both the Sony A7 V and A7R VI regularly topping sales charts, it will be interesting to see how the two models stand at the end of the year as to whether more photographers are swayed by the lower price of the A7 V, or the mix of high resolution and speed wins out for the A7R VI.

While Sony’s two newest full-frame Alpha series are fighting for the top spot, the Sony A7C II slides into the list in fourth place, illustrating that it’s not just Sony’s newest models that tend to top the charts, as the A7C II is a 2023 launch. The A7C II’s more compact design continues to make the camera a repeat attender for monthly sales charts.

The third-place spot speaks to the staying power of the compact camera trend, as the viral Fujifilm X100VI takes the honors. Now more than two years old, the X100VI continues the viral trend of its predecessor and, despite its age, remains difficult to find in stock due to the camera’s popularity.

Map Camera notes that the supply continues to remain unstable for the X100VI and that the retro compact camera tends to sell out immediately whenever stock becomes available.

Like the top three cameras, the full top ten at Map Camera contains several regulars, including Fujifilm’s X-M5 and X-E5, Sony’s smaller crop sensor A6700, and the popular Ricoh GR IV compact camera.

Surprisingly, there are no Canon mirrorless cameras on the list for June, but unsurprisingly, the popular PowerShot makes two appearances, with the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS sitting in sixth place. Canon’s well-loved but difficult to find in stock PowerShot G7 X Mark III is also on the list in eighth place.

Camera sales have led to record-high net sales for Canon’s latest quarterly financial results – but the camera giant’s latest financial report is dotted with both positives and negatives as the AI boom continues to drive volatile memory prices.

In the July 27 report, Canon added another 6 billion yen – about $36.6 million / £27.6 million / AU$52.4 million / CA$51.75 million – on top of the previously estimated impacts of the AI memory crisis. That puts Canon’s memory crisis estimate for 2026 at $69.4 billion yen. That’s about $423.9 million / £318.9 million / AU$606.4 million / CA$598.6 million at current exchange rates.

The storage needs for generative AI have driven up the cost of all types of digital storage and, beyond just the cost of a camera’s memory cards, could impact the price of the cameras themselves.

While the increased estimate seems to suggest the AI crisis is worsening, the report has a bit of good news – the increased memory cost so far has been offset by tariff refunds after the Supreme Court ruled some of the Trump Administration’s tariffs unconstitutional. Canon is estimating a 37.5 billion yen (around $230 million) tariff refund, which offsets the memory increases as well as the predicted decline in sales due to tension in the Middle East.

While Canon has managed to prevent the memory crisis from severely damaging the bottom line so far, a price increase isn’t out of the question if the situation continues to worsen.

“As memory prices are expected to take some time to normalize, we will closely monitor future price trends and seek to mitigate the negative impact as much as possible through price increases and additional cost reductions,” Canon told investors during the report.

In previous reports, Canon had also indicated that the company had been able to stockpile additional memory ahead of some of the price increases.

The July report isn’t the first time Canon has mentioned the possibility of a price increase driven by the memory crisis. In the previous quarterly report, the company estimated a ¥6 to 7 billion (around $40 million) annual impact from the rising costs of memory, with two-thirds of that cost attributed to the imaging division.

The quarterly report is also not the first time that Canon has mentioned the possibility of a price increase. In an interview earlier this year, a Canon representative said that “we cannot rule out the possibility of passing on the cost to prices.”

Canon also isn’t alone in estimating a severe impact of increasing memory costs. In earlier investor reports, Nikon also said that the company would “consider passing on price increases depending on the situation.” Fujifilm similarly told investors that “pricing measures and other initiatives” could be used to lessen the impact of rising costs of memory.

For now, the tariff refund, existing stockpile, and rising camera sales mean that Canon has a solid buffer against the impact of rising memory costs. But the company’s comments to investors also hint that price increases or cost-cutting may be needed if the situation worsens.

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III has received its first major firmware update, bringing one of the EOS R6 V's standout video features to the enthusiast hybrid camera.

While the update doesn't bring every EOS R6 V feature to the EOS R6 Mark III, Canon is extending one notable feature by allowing the AF (autofocus) for Close-up Demos to be used in additional movie shooting modes.

Thanks in part to the compact camera trend and the launch of the Canon EOS R6 Mark III, Canon has broken net sales records – and now the imaging giant plans to help cut the long waiting list for popular PowerShot models by ramping up production.

On July 27, Canon shared its second quarter financial results, posting record net sales for the quarter that the brand attributes in large part to compact cameras, network cameras, and semiconductor equipment. The report follows two years of record net sales on Canon's annual reports.

The financial data, however, is packed with insight not just for investors but photographers as well. Canon says that the compact camera trend is a key factor in the record net sales for the quarter.

The trend has also resulted in long wait lists for the most popular models, but Canon says that production will increase in the second half of the year to help shorten those wait times – and hit a projected 50 percent increase in sales growth by the end of the year.

“In the second half of the year, for compact cameras, which continue to perform strongly, we will further expand production capacity to eliminate supply shortages as quickly as possible and drive additional sales growth,” Canon notes in the report.

The report doesn’t specifically say which compact cameras will see an increase in production. However, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III has been difficult to find in stock for the last two years after the camera went viral on social media.

The July 27 announcement isn't the first time the camera giant has shared plans to increase compact camera production amid the return of the point-and-shoot camera.

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III and R6 V are also leading sales

The PowerShot line, however, isn’t the only camera behind the brand’s latest report. The average sale price for Canon’s cameras has also jumped thanks to a growth in the brand’s full-frame mirrorless sales. Canon attributes that full-frame growth to the success of the Canon EOS R6 Mark III.

The full-frame R6 Mark III, launched in November 2025, brings a hybrid focus delivering both 7K open gate and 32.5MP stills as fast as 40 fps. The Canon EOS R6 V, a video-focused variant for the popular R6 series, is also leading sales, Canon says.

Both the company's mirrorless cameras and compact cameras are expected to continue to grow, with Canon predicting Increased revenue year-on-year for the imaging segment of 11.6 percent.

Canon has released the first firmware update for the EOS R6 V, delivering one of the camera's most anticipated features: flash support. Firmware Version 1.1.0 fulfils a promise made at launch and also adds support for Canon's BR-E2 Wireless Remote Controller and enables grid display during movie recording.

The biggest addition is support for external flash units, allowing photographers and videographers to use speedlites with the EOS R6 V for the first time.

Because the EOS R6 V has no mechanical shutter, its maximum flash sync speed is limited to 1/60 sec. It also works natively only with flash units designed for Canon's Multi-function Shoe, although older flashes can be used with a compatible adapter.

With camera manufacturers now focused on mirrorless systems, it would be easy to assume DSLR lenses have faded into history. Japan's latest sales figures suggest otherwise. According to Japanese retailer Kitamura, a 11-year-old Canon DSLR lens climbed to No.2 in its best-selling lens chart for June 2026 – outperforming almost every modern mirrorless lens on the list.

The lens in question is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. The only optic ahead of it is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Canon RF mount – the company's first RF lens. The zoom is also available for Sony E, L-mount and Fujifilm X-mount.

Kitamura's June Top 10 reflects today's mixed lens market, with two lenses each from Sigma, Canon, Sony and Nikon, while Tamron and Fujifilm each claim one spot. Yet among all those zooms, there's just a single prime lens in the ranking – and it's the budget-friendly DSLR fifty first released more than a decade ago.

Why the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is so popular

Launched in 2015, Canon's EF f/1.8 STM is still available for $169 / £129, making it one of the most affordable first-party prime lenses on the market.

In our review, we described the classic nifty fifty as an "affordable marvel that any Canon photographer should own."

Our reviewer, Matthew Richards, praised its combination of sharp optics, smooth bokeh, fast and reliable AF (autofocus) and exceptional value for many, arguing that it outperforms Canon's EF 50mm f/1.4 USM in almost every meaningful area apart from its wider maximum aperture.

Its lightweight 160g (5.6 oz) design only adds to its appeal, making it an easy everyday lens for DSLR photographers.

Perhaps most impressively, our testing found that the budget-friendly prime delivered more accurate AF than the pricier EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, and produced sharper images across much of the f/1.8-2.8 aperture range.

It also offered better edge sharpness on APS-C cameras, along with lower levels of color fringing and distortion.

Taken together, those qualities help explain why a decade-old DSLR lens continues to attract buyers, even as the camera industry shifted almost entirely to mirrorless systems.

The Nikon D500 may have launched a decade ago, but it remains one of the most sought-after cameras in Japan's second-hand market. New data from Japanese marketplace Minna Camera shows the DSLR was the most-traded camera between January 1 and June 30, 2026, beating newer mirrorless bodies.

Announced in January 2016, the Nikon D500 has now passed its 10th anniversary. Its combination of fast autofocus, pro handling, rugged construction, and high-speed shooting continues to make it attractive to photographers looking for serious performance at a lower used price.

The Nikon D500 isn't the only DSLR to outperform newer technology. The Nikon D750, released in 2014, ranked second, while the Canon IXY 650 (also known as the PowerShot Elph 360 HS A and Ixus 285 HS A in different regions) took third place as the highest-ranked compact camera.

DSLRs dominated the rankings, accounting for six of the Top 10 most-traded cameras. The only mirrorless bodies to make the Top 10 are the Sony A6000 in sixth place and the Sony A7 II in seventh, while compact cameras claim the remaining two spots.

The Megadap M2RF makes a tantalizing promise: to enable manual focus Leica M lenses, designed for rangefinders with their magical rendering, to be used on Canon RF cameras with full support for Dual Pixel Autofocus – including eye tracking and subject detection.

Well, it's tantalizing and it's also true: the Megadap M2RF transforms Leica's gorgeous rangefinder glass into autofocus EOS R optics. Something for which, as a Canon shooter, I'm doubly grateful, given how closed the RF mount is to full-frame AF lenses from other manufacturers.

I had a blast using ultra-refined M-mount lenses to capture images with their unique character on my Canon EOS R5, though there are definitely a few asterisks that potential buyers should be aware of.

Megadap M2RF: Price & availability

The Megadap M2RF adapter is available for pre-order now, priced $399 / £429 (Australian pricing to follow).

For comparison, Megadap currently produces two other cross-mount autofocus adapters: the Megadap ETZ21 Pro+ (Sony E to Nikon Z) for $249 / £259 and Megadap EFTZ21 (Canon EF to Nikon Z) for $299 / 299.

Megadap M2RF: Build & handling

The build quality on the Megadap M2RF is first class. This isn't one of those flimsy adapters you get on eBay; it's a reassuringly heavy, substantially constructed device, beautifully machined and with thick, solid gold-plated contacts.

It has a custom coreless motor, with dual-hall (using two magnetic sensors) and optical sensing, using an electronic helicoid driver system for steady and precise control of the attached lens.

All the controls are likewise exquisitely made, from the aperture switch to the AF / MF selection button to the lens release. This feels every inch a premium product, befitting the luxury Leica glass that will be mounted to it.

As I'll explain in the Performance section below, the aperture switch is used to select the aperture from the preset positions that sync with your camera's aperture setting.

The AF / MF button gives you a one-touch toggle between auto and manual focus (whereupon M2RF retracts back to infinity). You can also double-tap the button in manual mode to engage manual macro mode, which fully extends the lens to its maximum focus position.

As a bonus, because the adapter extends the lens by up to 4.5mm beyond its original position, this reduces the 0.7m standard minimum focus distance of M lenses – enabling you to get close-up shots without accessories like extension tubes, unlocking new creative opportunities.

I also want to shout out the front and back caps, which are so often an afterthought from third-party manufacturers. These are handsome-looking transparent caps, bearing the Megadap logo, and like the rest of the unit feel very premium.

Even so, while it's an impressively robust product, there is one key limitation to the lenses you can mount to the Megadap: how much they weigh.

While every make of M-mount glass is supported, whether it's made by Leica, Voigtländer, Zeiss or anyone else, it only plays nicely with lenses that are 500g or less – which means that bigger, heavier M glass won't be well suited, as they put too much strain on the mount and motor.

And of course, if you're feeling brave, you can double-stack almost any other vintage lens (such as M42 glass) via an M-mount adapter and then attach that to the M2RF for even more creative possibilities.

Megadap M2RF: Performance

I primarily tested the Megadap M2RF with the Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Classic and Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 Asph. Overall, it delivers pretty astonishing performance for specific genres of photography – or, perhaps more accurately, for a specific pace of photography.

For portraiture, still life, landscape, travel, street and everyday shooting – in other words, shooting at a fairly soft pace or with a gently moving subject – it's absolutely brilliant.

For example, the autofocus keeps up with people absolutely wonderfully during a portrait session. The eye tracking is particularly impressive, and it's also steady and reliable for head and full-body tracking when your subject moves around. Using the Megadap for the first time is really quite a magical experience.

However, other genres and paces of photography are definitely not well suited to what the Megadap does. If you're hoping to shoot fast action like sports or wildlife, that's not what this adapter is for. Nor are most forms of video, where multi-axis movement overwhelms the device.

More than just the capabilities of the device itself, though, it's important to understand that there is a lot expected of the user that may surprise someone expecting a plug-and-play, fully automatic experience.

The Megadap M2RF is a "push-pull" adapter that uses a helical drive to move the lens forward and backward in order to shift the plane of focus. As such, you must remember to turn the focus ring of your adapted lens to infinity or performance will be substantially impeded.

It's definitely something that takes some getting used to – and especially if you're somebody who whips your camera in and out of a bag, you need to be mindful of knocking the focus ring too far.

In addition, when mounting the lens, you need to synchronize its aperture value to your camera's by setting it to a specific aperture value – f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8 or f/4 – corresponding to the values on the aperture switch on the side of the adapter.

Again, if you don't do this then the performance will be significantly degraded. Getting your muscle memory used to these steps each time you use the adapter or switch lenses is crucial, otherwise you'll likely experience hunting or complete focus failure.

Obviously different lenses are going to have different focal length and aperture combinations, which is a further point to factor in.

The adapter comes with four factory presets (Leica Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Asph, Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 Asph, Zeiss Biogon T* 25mm f/2.8 ZM and Voigtländer 50mm f/1.2 Nokton Aspherical II), but it can be customized for any four lenses via the Megadap M2RF Custom Tool.

While it's brilliant to be able to add your own lens data (which is then helpfully written to your EXIF), it's fair to say that Megadap's expertise is in optics and not software. The Custom Tool is certainly usable, but it's a bit clunky and doesn't have the same premium feel as the M2RF itself.

I've always been skeptical about cross-system adapters, but I was pretty blown away by the Megadap M2RF… once I'd mastered its setup intricacies! Setting infinity focus and syncing the aperture before shooting is an extra step when mounting a lens, but once it becomes part of your muscle memory you can enjoy seamless shooting.

I love the magical rendering of Leica's M lenses, but rangefinder focus gets harder as my eyes get worse with age. So it's nothing short of liberating to be able to use them on an RF-mount camera – and the ability to make use of Canon's Dual Pixel AF and algorithmic subject detection is a truly transformative experience.

It's obviously important to be aware of the Megadap's limitations. While it offers fairly fast focus that can keep up with gently moving genres, it's not designed for fast action – which limits its usefulness for wildlife, sports and video. But then, I don't believe anyone is really interested in adapting M lenses for any of those.

The Megadap M2RF is ideally suited for the intended purposes of M glass, like portraiture or street photography. It replicates rangefinder results on your RF camera but supercharges them with the power of Canon's autofocus. Canon EOS R100

Best for beginners who want to learn photography step-by-step

The Canon R100 is focused on photography, and we rated it as the best beginner-friendly camera.

It's straightforward, lightweight, and has guided menus that help explain each mode.

It doesn't have a touchscreen or a flip-out screen, and 4K video is cropped with slower AF (autofocus). But for stills, it performs beautifully and keeps things simple.

Canon EOS R50

Best for beginners who want to shoot hybrid (photo+video)

The Canon R50 is better if you want to shoot video or vlog. It has a flip screen, touchscreen controls, and records sharp, full-width 4K video.

It also shoots faster and feels more like a hybrid content creation tool. It's still easy to use, but it gives you more room to grow.

Verdict: R100 vs. R50

So if you want to learn photography without extra complexity, the Canon EOS R100 bundle is a fantastic choice at just £489.

But if you want to do more video, social content, vlogging, or want a true workhorse lens that covers multiple photo genres, the Canon R50 bundle is absolutely worth the upgrade at £819.

Both cameras give you a strong start with Canon's mirrorless system, and with these London Camera Exchange deals, it's a great time to begin your creative journey.

Photographers are getting tired of carrying around heavy full-frame cameras, if the latest numbers from Japan are any indication. The latest data from retail tracker BCN+R for trending mirrorless cameras in June 2026 is almost entirely made up of cameras known for smaller designs – and more affordable prices.

The monthly data also featured a camera that made the top ten for the first time, despite launching a year ago: The OM System OM-5 Mark II. The Micro Four Thirds mirrorless slid into 8th place in the monthly rankings.

The OM System OM-5 Mark II is a compact mirrorless body built for the outdoors with IP53 weather-sealing. Part of the lure of the camera is also the stabilization system, which means fewer shots that need a tripod.

The OM-5 Mark II, however, is far from the only smaller-bodied mirrorless on the list. In fact, nine out of the top ten cameras have cropped sensors (APS-C or Micro Four Thirds) and only one is a full-frame model.

According to BCN+R, these were the top mirrorless cameras in Japan in June 2026:

That’s a list packed almost entirely with APS-C bodies – though it’s worth noting that the data from BCN+R often doesn’t match up directly with major Japanese camera stores like Map Camera. BCN+R only tracks around 40 percent of electronics sales in Japan, and much of the data comes from general tech stores rather than retailers geared specifically for serious photographers, which tend to lead more towards advanced models than BCN+R’s lists.

Regardless, the list is an interesting look at the latest mirrorless trends in Japan. Of course, crop sensor cameras also tend to be more affordable than their full frame counterparts, so beyond the smaller size, the format also tends to fit into more beginner budgets.

The Sony A7 V is the lone full-frame model on the list, a mirrorless camera that has topped charts across several sources and multiple regions since its launch. The A7 V mixes a full-frame sensor with blackout-free 30 fps shooting and smarter autofocus.

But, the Sony name dominates the list. Both of Sony’s APS-C video mirrorless models, the ZV-E10 and ZV-E10 II made the list, along with the more stills-focused crop sensor, the Sony A6400.

The Canon EOS R50 tops the list; however, a crop-sensor beginner camera with a low price point that has proved exceptionally popular, driving the R50 to numerous bestseller lists since launching in early 2023.

The Canon EOS R10 is still a crop-sensor camera, but is more advanced than the R50 with an autofocus system and burst speeds geared towards fast action.

Fujifilm similarly had two models make the top ten – and both fall on the more affordable end of the brand’s X-series. The X-T30 III is a budget model that still has Fujifilm’s retro looks and a viewfinder, where the X-M5 is Fujifilm’s cheapest, smallest current mirrorless body, but it lacks a viewfinder and is more geared towards vlogging.

Sliding into the tenth-place spot is the Nikon Z50 II, a popular ASP-C model that brings some of Nikon’s high-end speed and autofocus into a more affordable crop-sensor body.

The sales data from general retailers tends to lean more towards affordable beginner models than photo specialty stores. From Yodobashi in Japan, for example, the latest trends list is led by pricey models like the Hasselblad X2D II 100C; but cameras like the A7 V, X-M5, X-T30 II, Z50 II, R50, and ZV-E10 II make both lists.

The Canon PowerShot name has gone so viral that sales have increased nearly seven times in half as many years. Yet, despite the success, Canon hasn’t released any PowerShots outside of the video-focused V-series since 2019. But the latest rumors are calling for that to change before the end of 2026.

Newly circulating rumors hint that a new Canon PowerShot could be coming in September. The speculation further hints that the upcoming model isn’t a V-series video-focused model like the 2023 PowerShot V10 and the 2025 PowerShot V1.

Canon hasn’t verified these rumors – but with the growth of compact cameras, it would be strange for the PowerShot brand that so regularly dominates best-seller lists to ignore the trend. According to NPR, sales for Canon’s PowerShot series have grown nearly seven times amid the resurgence of the compact camera between 2022 and 2025.

The last time that Canon launched stills-focused PowerShots was in 2019 with the G7 X Mark III and the G5 X Mark II. The PowerShot G7 X Mark III in particular has seen newfound viral fame, making the compact camera difficult to find in stock and driving the camera manufacturer to increase production on multiple occasions.

Earlier this year, Canon did launch a new look for the G7 X Mark III as part of the 30th anniversary of PowerShot, but the camera retains the same tech on the inside.

Of course, I could play devil’s advocate here and point out that retro compact cameras are also part of the trend, with older lo-fi models seeing new growth amid the modern sharpness (and AI infiltration) of the typical smartphone camera. And if retro cameras are trending, then there’s not much reason to upgrade the tech inside a camera that’s already selling so well I can’t find it in stock anywhere.

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III isn’t one of those lo-fi cameras, however. The reason that the camera has surged in trends is likely more due to the fact that the camera mixes a one-inch sensor with a zoom lens. Zoom tends to be more flattering for portraits, as well as the real camera flash that had influencers recommending the G7 X Mark II in droves.

So far, the rumors around a new PowerShot coming in the fall are short on details, if not believability. But looking at the latest trends and sales numbers, launching a new stills PowerShot in 2026 would be a smart move for Canon.

As the headquarters for several of the biggest camera brands, Japan is often the first region photographers look to for key trends – but the latest list of best-selling compact cameras doesn’t include any of the usual viral suspects like the Fujifilm X100VI or Ricoh GR IV. Instead, the list starts with the retro Kodak PixPro C1 and reads like a who's-who list of cheap compact cameras.

The data comes from BCN+R, a market research company that compiles data from about 40 percent of retail sales from major electronic store chains across Japan. The company recently shared a list of the top-selling compact cameras for the first half of 2026.

Kodak dominates the list with four models – more than any other manufacturer – building on another BCN+R trend where Kodak was the leading brand in sales for compact cameras in 2025. The four Kodaks on the list come from JK Imaging, a company that licenses the Kodak name.

According to BCN+R, these are the most popular compact cameras in Japan for January through June 2026:

3. Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo
4. Canon PowerShot SX740 HS

As a photography industry expert, the first thing that struck me about the list is that it lacks some of the most viral advanced compact cameras with larger sensors, like the Fujifilm X100VI and Ricoh GR IV. But, both of these options are so popular that they are difficult to find in stock, which could be playing a key role in those cameras’ absence.

But there could be another factor at play: Price. The list is heavily dominated by budget cameras. Only three of the options on the top ten list retail for more than US$500: The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS, the waterproof OM System Tough TG-7, and the zoomy Panasonic Lumix TZ99.

The push for less time spent on smartphones and more classic retro images has sparked a resurgence among cheap compact cameras. The cheap compact category had been all but decimated by the smartphone, but as compact cameras make a return in trends, so too do the most affordable models.

The cheap point-and-shoot isn’t making a comeback for image quality. In tests, for example, we found most smartphones will outperform the Kodak PixPro C1. But, part of the comeback is the nostalgia for less perfect images – lo-fi resolution, softer lenses, and even those orange time/date stamps in the corner can all be found without spending a lot of money.

Perhaps because the cheap point-and-shoot trend isn’t about modern image technology, several of the models on the list are a few years old, like the Instax Mini Evo, a digital-instant film hybrid packed with retro special effects launched in 2021, and the 2017 Kodak PixPro FZ55.

Importantly, the BCN+R list only includes around 40 percent of electronics sales in Japan and includes major electronics retailers that may cater more towards general consumers than serious photographers. While some models like the Canon PowerShot SX740, Kodak PixPro C1 and OM System Tough TG-7 are also popular at some photo specialty stores, looking at large photo stores like Map Camera tends to create a list that leans more towards pricier, larger sensor compact cameras.

Regardless, the BCN+R rankings indicate that even the cheap compact camera has returned from the dead – it’s not just the large sensor compacts and models with more zoom than the typical smartphone that have made a comeback.

Since the point at which most manufacturers conspired to get us to re-buy all our interchangeable lens camera equipment in more compact mirrorless form, DSLRs have been portrayed as bulky, lumpen and very much yesterday’s news.

That perception persists, underscored by the fact that former DSLR stalwarts Canon and Nikon have stopped releasing anything new with a mirror box. Along with everyone else, except possibly Pentax.

While I’ve shared prior opinions on why I feel that’s short-sighted and a shame, any connection of mine to DSLRs isn’t nostalgic, emotion-based or a kneejerk reaction to manufactured hype.

There are tangible, practical reasons for choosing a DSLR in 2026. Yes, still. And, if choosing a DSLR, for choosing a Canon DSLR above all others.

Why? Well, for starters, the golden rule of buying an interchangeable lens camera still holds – namely, I shouldn’t just consider the specific body I have my eye on, but the whole system that surrounds it, including all lenses and accessories.

Even before DSLRs were no longer cool, Canon still enjoyed the most far-reaching and comprehensive support out of any camera brand.

And still, if buying a Canon DSLR today, users not only have access to lenses produced since the first digital EOS, but also film-era lenses stretching back decades (if, in some cases requiring an adaptor).

Buying a Canon DSLR therefore becomes the most cost-effective, value-added solution, as I explore the wealth of compatible Canon EF and EF-S lenses for DSLRs – numbering over 200 since 1987 – available on both the new and second-hand market.

Last year Canon claimed it had manufactured 170 million EF and EF-S lenses in total. So, tracking down a perfect match for both intended subject and DSLR in use won’t be an issue.

Couple this with over 110 million Canon EOS cameras produced – with the caveat that this figure does include some mirrorless – and it shouldn’t be a stretch to find either a mint unboxed DSLR or a good quality used option.

At the time of writing, I can still buy a flagship EOS-1D X Mark III or EOS 5D Mark IV camera body direct from Canon’s online store. Or, at the other end of the price scale, snap up an EOS 2000D DSLR plus standard zoom for less than is currently being asked for most compact travel zooms.

So yes, as well as a DSLR’s imaging performance, functionality, battery life, optical viewfinder and durable build, sheer stock numbers work in Canon’s favor. As they do for anyone considering one of its DSLRs in 2026.

DSLRs might not be the cool kids anymore, but sometimes sensible is the smarter option.

Canon EOS R8

Budget-friendly option for Canon DSLR users and vloggers

The Canon EOS R8 offers an affordable entry into full-frame territory. It keeps the familiar Canon interface, supports your DSLR lenses via an adapter, and packs modern features into a lightweight, compact body.

The only notable limitation is the lack of IBIS, which might be a deal-breaker if you do a lot of handheld shooting with long lenses or video. In that case, the EOS R6 II is worth considering, though it comes with a much higher price tag.

Nikon Z6 II

Best for Nikon DSLR switchers and hybrid shooters

If you're moving from a Nikon DSLR like the D750 or D780, the Nikon Z6 II is hands-down a smooth upgrade. It features a similar body design, intuitive Nikon menus, and excellent ergonomics.

While Nikon's Z-mount lens selection isn't as extensive as Sony's or Canon's, you can make use of your existing DSLR lenses via an adapter.

Sony A7 III

Ideal for system switchers and DSLR upgraders

The Sony A7 III remains one of the most versatile full-frame cameras in its price range and packs pro-level features.

It gives you maximum mirrorless flexibility as the Sony E-mount ecosystem is the most mature on the market, boasting a huge range of native lenses and third-party support from brands like Tamron and Sigma.

Comparison

If I were to pick a mirrorless full-frame camera today, I'd lean toward the Sony A7 III.

Its unmatched lens options and flexibility make it a standout choice, especially if you're open to switching systems entirely.

That said, if you want to stick with your current brand and already own a lot of DSLR lenses, staying within the same ecosystem is a smart and budget-friendly way to jump into mirrorless photography.

Japan has long been one of the world's biggest camera markets, making it a closely watched indicator of wider photography trends. Now data from Minna Camera Marketplace in Japan reveals that 70% of the 10 most-traded mirrorless cameras in the country during the first half of 2026 were APS-C models.

However, the overall winner is anything but typical. Canon's EOS R6 Mark II claimed the No.1 position despite being a full-frame camera in a market largely dominated by smaller, more affordable APS-C bodies. With its deeper grip and DSLR-style ergonomics, it also offers handling that's more familiar to photographers upgrading from DSLRs than many compact mirrorless rivals.

Minna Camera analyzed all mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras traded between January 1 and June 30, 2026. While APS-C cameras accounted for seven places in the Top 10, the first and second positions were both secured by full-frame cameras: the Canon EOS R6 Mark II in first place, followed by the Sony A7 IV.

Why APS-C cameras dominate the rankings

The three full-frame cameras in the ranking averaged around ¥190,000 (approx. $1,170 / £871), compared with roughly ¥90,000 (approx. $544 / £413) for the seven APS-C bodies – a price gab of around two times.

Half of the cameras in the Top 10 also averaged less than ¥100,000 approx. $616 / £458).

"Affordable APS-C bodies broadened the base of the ranking," states Minna Camera, highlighting how lower prices continue to drive demand in the used mirrorless camera market.

If the latest camera rumors are to be believed, Canon's next release will be a retro camera featuring its newest 32.5MP full-frame image sensor.

The long-awaited Canon EOS R8 Mark II will be much more than a traditional update to the original Canon EOS R8, and in turn will be much more than just the company's entry-level full-frame body.

Rumors have been flying for years that Canon has been working on a retro-styled camera, similar to what its arch rival has done with the Nikon Zf and Zfc, appealing to the same market that fawns over SLR-style Fujifilm cameras.

And, with 2026 marking the 50th anniversary of the legendary Canon AE-1, it's been widely expected that this would serve as the inspiration for a retro mirrorless design.

However, rather than releasing a retro body as a standalone product, it's being reported that the EOS R8 Mark II will be released with this retro design – and that it will be announced in September.

Personally I think we'll also see a traditional R8 Mark II, which looks like the rest of the EOS R range, because not everyone will want a throwback camera – and the R8 is, after all, the de facto replacement for the discontinued EOS RP as Canon's entry-level full-frame camera.

So, similar to Nikon releasing both the retro Zfc and the traditional Nikon Z50 with the same internals but different designs for different audiences, I think Canon will do the same here.

Either way, Canon Rumors has shared a set of specifications for the Canon EOS R8 Mark II.

While these mark a substantial upgrade from the original R8, what's most interesting is that this will be the fourth time that Canon deploys its new 32.5MP full-frame sensor – which we first saw in the Canon EOS C50, followed by the R6 Mark III and most recently the EOS R6 V.

However, just as dual base ISO was only enabled for the C50, it looks like a number of other high-end features will be disabled for the R8 Mark II: namely open gate video and 7K recording.

This makes sense for multiple reasons. Obviously there needs to be some delineation between the product lines, and omitting features like open gate will keep the price of the R8 Mark II down – and, crucially, keep the performance up, as there will be no need to worry about recording limits.

In addition to the resolution boost, the R8 Mark II will also see the introduction of in-body image stabilization (IBIS) as well as an additional SD card slot.

Both of these will increase the size of the body, which might be another reason for the proposed retro design (as the bulkier SLR-style frame will disguise the space needed for the extra card slot and IBIS unit).

I do, however, think we all might have been a bit too excited about the concept of an "EOS RE-1" modeled after the AE-1. We might in fact be looking at something along the lines of the limited edition, Asia-only Canon EOS RP Gold (above). 

This would also be very welcome in my book, as I'm just jonesing for Canon to release a silver camera. Come on, Canon – I've got a fresh credit card waiting for you, just give me what I want!

Lightweight design marvel

The Sony A7C II features a 33MP full-frame Exmor R sensor, AI-powered subject-detection autofocus (AF), 7-stop in-body stabilization (IBIS), and 10-bit 4:2:2 4K 60p video recording, offering serious performance for both photographers and videographers.

Even with its compact form, the A7C II retains a built-in electronic viewfinder – known as a must-have feature for many photographers.

Weighing just 514 g (1 lb 2.2 oz), it delivers full-frame image quality in a remarkably compact body that's particularly well-suited to travel photographers and hybrid creators. Despite its small size (124 x 71.1 x 63.4 mm), Sony has retained a built-in electronic viewfinder – a feature that many photographers still consider essential.

While some compact and creator-focused mirrorless cameras now rely solely on the rear LCD, the A7C II offers an eye-level shooting experience without significantly increasing its size.

Nearly three years after its launch, the A7C II still delivers everything most photographers want or need.

While camera manufacturers release dozens of new models each year, sales data continues to show older, well-balanced cameras can outperform the latest tech when they strike the right mix of price, performance and usability.

Technology tends to have a short lifespan, but the Canon EOS R6 series is so popular in Japan that both of the older models are in the top three for used camera sales.

The data comes from a popular Japanese camera buy-and-sell app, Minna Camera, which recently tallied the most popular cameras sold on the app for the month of June. The list is led by the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, followed by the Sony ZV-E10 and the original Canon EOS R6.

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II was replaced in November 2025 by the new R6 Mark III, a 32.5MP full-frame 7K open gate camera that has been listed among several new camera top ten lists since its launch. But the 24.1MP Mark II and original 20.1MP R6’s inclusion in Minna Camera’s list suggests solid used camera sales across the camera’s history.

However, the data also highlights how rapidly the used camera market can shift, with five of the cameras in the top ten list all cameras that hadn’t made the previous month’s list. The Ricoh GR IV, for example, was in 35th place the previous month but jumped up to 6th place – Ricoh’s announcement of a price increase coming in July – which has now also been implemented outside of Japan too – likely influenced the used sales for the relatively new compact camera.

Two of those five cameras that have popped into the top ten from the lower rankings are DSLRs, the Nikon D7500 and the D750, suggesting the larger interchangeable lens format remains well-traded among used camera marketplaces.

For lenses, shoppers seemed to have a healthy craving for telephoto glass. The workhorse Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S topped the June list. While Canon took two of the top three camera bodies, Z Mount glass is the most popular mount on the platform at 30 percent of sales. The Canon EF, Canon RF, and Sony E all trailed at 20 percent each – so combining Canon’s DSLR and mirrorless lenses would bring it to the top spot – with Fujifilm X capturing the other ten percent.

Zooms make up much of the top ten list, with just three prime lenses on the list, and many of those optics hit a focal length longer than 100mm.

Used trends don’t directly match the trendiest new cameras from Japan, and data from Japan doesn’t necessarily match other regions. But, with Japan the home to several major camera brands, the data offers an interesting look at what cameras are selling well in the home of major camera brands like Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, Ricoh, and others.

The vlogger-oriented Sony ZV-E10 cameras have gone largely unchallenged since the original was released in 2021. Any search for the best cameras for vlogging, content creation or travel photography now seems to bring up these models, and justly so.

However, I also think that a certain competitor camera, the Canon EOS R50, which came out in 2023, subsequently gets overlooked in this debate – and it’s actually a pretty solid rival to the ZV-E10.

These cameras boast similar specs and cost around the same. So if you’re looking for a small, nimble, creator camera, I want to make the decision easier for you.

The big question, then: which one would I choose? I’d go with Sony, simply because it's more versatile.

While both cameras pack a decent but respectable 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, can record 4K 30p and FullHD 120p, and have a 3.0-inch fully articulating touchscreen, the Sony E-mount system has a much wider array of compatible lenses and better battery life.

There are over 80 native Sony E-mount lenses compatible with its cameras, whereas Canon can has over 50 native RF and RF-S lenses.

You’re sure to find the Canon lens you need from that range, but it’s the third-party options that boost Sony's appeal – swelling the total catalog to over 300. With Canon restricting third-party manufacturers' ability to release RF / RF-S glass, there are far fewer to choose from.

The Sony camera battery, the NP-FW50, also significantly outperforms Canon’s LP-E17 battery, powering approximately 440 still shots versus 310 on a full charge.

Of course, there are things about the Sony I don’t like, notably the lack of an electronic viewfinder. I get that this is because the ZV series is aimed at video, but it’s annoying if you shoot stills as well.

I also give the ergonomics points to the Canon. Its grip has more depth and, in general, the camera seems to fit in your hand more snugly. The Sony is way too thin for that snug feel, which is a criticism I’ve had of all Sony Alpha cameras – even my beloved Sony A7 III.

Still, the ZV-E10 is the winner for me – but not by a country mile. It's smaller and lighter, has a better selection of lenses and more juice in the battery – though I still wish it had an EVF for stills.

The Sony ZV-E10 II is also available, which brings a few extra megapixels of resolution and almost double the battery life thanks to the new NP-FZ100 (though it will set you back around $300 more than its predecessor).

And there's also the Canon EOS R50 V, a vlogging-oriented version of the R50 that's more of a direct competitor to the Sony options… but again you lose the viewfinder…

Like many photographers, I like to make prints to adorn the walls at home. And some years ago I invested in a poster-sized printer so that I could do so at will.

Specifically, I got a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mark II, which was the 2009 version of a printer that hasn’t significantly changed from its 2006 release.

When I tried to print something this weekend with no success for the first time, I wasn’t sure what to do.

There are obvious steps that everyone goes through, obviously. Checking that all the ink tanks are full is step one. They weren’t, of course. It had been a few months, and I suspect a degree of evaporation may have played its part.

The current heatwave and the fact that I keep the printer upstairs won’t have helped matters. However, it was not a cheap printer – well over $500 – so I don’t mind forking out $30 for a set of replacements from a brand of compatible inks I have come to trust: Inkredible (unlike, sadly, some of the ‘compatible’ brands on Amazon).

Each of the ink tanks for this printer has a chip and the printer senses them. I’ve never had an issue with these, whereas some ‘compatible’ inks have proven not to be. Some will tell me I should continue using Canon’s own inks, but their price is somewhat off-putting by comparison.

Two days later, when the inks arrived, I swapped them out and reassuring lights indicated that the printer recognized them; however, it was still not inclined to print a page for me.

At this point, I had to resort to attempting to understand the printer’s problem via its only means of communication – an orange LED that flashes a number of times in sequence.

This felt positively archaic in an era where my portable battery pack has a small color display, but casting my mind back to 2006 (before the iPhone was announced) perhaps this wasn’t so unlikely.

I can connect to my computer, of course, and hope that the software understands the error, but that doesn’t actually solve it either. Plugging into my Mac did remind me of the printer’s age, though, with a dedicated USB-A cable forcing me to find an adapter for the USB-C ports on my computer.

My MacBook reported a print head error via the Print Center, and ChatGPT concurred when I described the flashing light. Unlike the computer, though, the AI chatbot wanted to help out – suggesting a load of things to try.

While every one of the eight ink colors is a small replaceable tank, the whole print head is attached beneath them and is also removable and replaceable.

The ever-sympathetic chatbot initially suggested a series of parts of the printer to clean – buttons, paper feeds and the like – all of which, it felt, could lead to the same issue.

Eventually, it decided that it was time to remove the print head – but before replacing it, suggested some ways to clean it. In other words, lint-free cloth and rubbing alcohol were additional investments that ChatGPT thought were worth consideration. Not to mention a lot of time.

Sadly, though, AI wasn’t totally on-side with my problem, wanting me to perform a nozzle check – which the printer was refusing to do because the print head wasn’t working.

After a lot of back-and-forth in a chat, though, it gave me odds (about 90%) of an electrical failure of the print head, which brings me to my next choice. Do I source a new one – there are compatible options out there, even if Canon ones are hard to come by – or is it time to call it quits?

I think the answer is starting to become apparent. I’ve already lost a good amount of money and time – and ended up with very inky fingers several times.

I was, I have to admit, impressed with the amount of knowledge that AI had to offer about the printer’s error messages given its age. But at this stage I start to measure the value of my time (no, really, it has some).

There is also a point at which being told “We’re getting there” or “That’s a good sign” by a cheery and positive AI is increasingly frustrating as a human. ChatGPT is a bot, after all, and doesn’t quite appreciate that getting eight different colors over your fingers every time you get all the tanks out to access the print head to try “one more thing” is a bit annoying.

And it takes a long, long time to clean printer ink off your fingers.

So the final question should perhaps be “What is the best large-format printer?” That is a question I’ll still trust to humans with experience, but I did appreciate AI lending a hand in making me feel that I won’t be slapping down the cash on a whim.

This photograph, Galaxy on the Rise, was captured in Tenerife, the Canary Islands, where the photographer spent nearly four hours searching for a hidden cave that proved remarkably difficult to find.

"I'm always drawn to locations that feel unique and relatively undiscovered, and this cave was a perfect example," says astrophotographer Anastasia Gulova, reflecting on the image that has now been selected for Capture the Atlas 2026 Milky Way Photographer of the Year collection.

The search became even more demanding due to intense heat and powerful winds, which pushed the photographer against the surrounding rocks. Almost abandoning the attempt, Gulova finally located the cave that would become the foreground for one of her most memorable Milky Way images.

"The conditions made the process demanding," Gulova explains. "Intense heat combined with powerful winds made movement difficult, at times pushing me against sharp rocks.

"After nearly giving up and heading back, I finally came across the cave, a moment that made the entire search worthwhile.

"Capturing the image proved just as challenging. Composing and shooting the panoramic foreground required careful positioning, while properly illuminating the upper section of the cave was particularly difficult.

"To manage this, I used focus stacking across different planes, including the upper edge, the horizon and the lower foreground, all in near-total darkness, where the brief blue hour offered little assistance.

"With the Milky Way sitting low on the horizon, bringing out its color and detail required additional effort in both capture and processing.

"In the end, the result reflects not only the scene itself, but also the persistence and experience behind it, making it especially meaningful."

One of the best cinematographers of modern film and cinema got his start with a groundbreaking Canon DSLR – and ultimately "blagged" his way into a BAFTA-nominated career shooting series like HBO's The Last of Us and Apple TV's Cape Fear.

After getting addicted to movies like Blade Runner and RoboCop when he was ten, Eben Bolter always wanted to get involved in film. And it was as an amateur photographer, when he discovered his camera could shoot video, that everything started to fall into place.

"I grew up on the south coast of England a million miles away from the film and TV industry, but like a lot of people I fell in love with cinema because of VHS," he explained on The Making Of podcast.

"I used to beg my parents to go to the cinema, and I think the real kind of inciting moment was Jurassic Park in 1993. I was 10 years old, saw it at the cinema, and it really did what it did to me. I was the perfect age to see that film.

"And that really inspired this lifelong love of movies. And it took me, from the age of 10, it took me another like 15 years to figure out what a cinematographer was, and and that real people can make movies – you don't have to be born into the industry."

Moviemaking was "still magic that [he] knew nothing about", leaving Bolter with a love of film that he didn't know what to do with. His first idea to get involved with film was to study business at university, with a notion of working with distributors or movie theaters somehow. He just wanted to do something related to film, and that felt attainable way in.

"In a way, luckily, that didn't work out. And at the same time I was getting into amateur photography, just picking up a DSLR and shooting photographs. I traveled a little bit, learned how to take better pictures as I went – but completely separate to any kind of career. That was just for the love of images.

"And then there was a crucial moment in time with the Canon 5D Mark II, the DSLR camera that I happen to own, enabled a video mode. And this had a large format sensor, and I'm already holding this thing and using this thing, and suddenly I could shoot video.

"So suddenly these photographs I was going out and taking in the street could become animations, could become movies. And it just opened up this idea of like, huh – well maybe that is a thing I could kind of do."

Bolter was working for a marketing company at the time, which needed some corporate videos shot. He volunteered, just for the opportunity to go out and shoot something. "I was basically shooting these sort of corporate interview rubbish videos, but I was kind of learning about editing and dealing with Final Cut Pro."

This led him down "a rabbit hole of short films", after connecting with a group of filmmakers via an evening film school.

"We started shooting short films, and I was the guy who had a camera, so I was de facto cinematographer. And a couple of those short films got into festivals, and it felt like the train had left the station and I was just suddenly a DP [director of photography] without really knowing what a DP was."

What he did have, however, was a knowledge of film that had been building for years, ever since watching his cousin's stack of VHS tapes as a kid.

"So if directors talk to me about, 'Hey you know that shot in ET, and how Spielberg covered this scene and blah blah blah,' I was like, 'Oh, I know exactly what you mean,' and I can visualize that, and I can attempt to do that. And the way that I fail in attempting to do that is going to make it my photography."

With an abundance of passion and no formal training (save the Final Cut course he was sent on by his old marketing firm), Bolter forged an enviable career that saw him work with Pedro Pascal on The Last of Us and Javier Bardem in Cape Fear.

Despite being recognized as a Breakthrough Brit by BAFTA in 2016, and receiving a nomination for a BAFTA Award for his work on The Last of Us, Bolter still experiences imposter syndrome.

"It's sort of like, here I am, I found myself in this absurd position, and I started by just picking up a camera and not knowing what I was doing. And I'm still in a way the same person. I've sort of blagged it this far, and now I guess I've legitimized myself finally, but at the beginning it was very much a sort of, 'Huh, they're letting me do this!'"

We all know that DSLR sales have declined, but they have far from flatlined. In fact, Canon still sells up to 620,000 of them each year – which is an astonishing number, when you consider the current market in terms of both trends and overall sales figures.

Moreover, Canon – one of the last three brands still making these cameras – has no plans to abandon them, telling me that it will support DSLR customers as long as they are out there.

I was fortunate to talk to Canon's senior management earlier this year at CP+ 2026, where we discussed some of the more traditional segments of the camera industry – including the fact that Canon is the only company still supporting beginner photographers with a true entry-level body.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to ask the Canon brass about the tenacious nature of the DSLR market – which still makes up a significant amount of the company's business.

As Go Tokura, executive vice president and head of Imaging Group at Canon, explained to me, "90% of the market is dominated by mirrorless cameras; DSLR cameras only account for 10% of the market, and currently it is about 700,000 unit shipments."

That figure is the total number of DSLRs shipped in 2025, which according to market overseer CIPA was 690,911 – of which Canon sold between 600,000 and 620,000 units.

Which means, despite it 'only' accounting for 10% of the market, 700,000 sales is still a considerable figure – meaning that there is a considerable user base still buying and using this kind of camera.

"In other words, we have that many customers still there!" smiled Tokura. "So as long as there are still customers for DSLRs, we would like to continue to offer our products."

Currently, the company still sells three DSLR models: the flagship Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, the workhorse Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and the entry-level Canon EOS Rebel T7 / 2000D. And there are still 27 current Canon DSLR lenses listed on the Canon USA store.

The company said in 2020 that it had officially shifted its focus to RF-mount development, while also noting that "should the market demand it, we are ready to create new EF lenses."

While that seems implausibly unlikely in 2026, it's reassuring to know – and speaks very highly of the company – that Canon is still supporting both its existing DSLR customers, as well as newcomers who are still buying into the EF-mount system.

But how long will DSLRs keep selling? Before I could get the words out of my mouth, Tokura added: "Now, your question is until when? We cannot even imagine that!"

The Sony A7 V has topped multiple sales charts across both the US and Japan since the mirrorless camera’s launch late in 2025 – but Sony may have just outdone themselves. Topping US photo retailer B&H’s trends chart for June 2026 is the A7 V’s newly announced big brother: The Sony A7R VI.

The 66.7MP full-frame mirrorless camera tops the overall sales charts for the retailer in June, followed by the $35 camera that just won’t quit: The Kodak Charmera. The longstanding Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III and cheaper sibling PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A also make an appearance on the trends list, along with a new compact camera with zoom, the Panasonic Lumix L10, and a longtime zoom favorite, the Sony RX100 VII.

Looking exclusively at mirrorless cameras, another trend emerges as full-frame cameras that mix speed and resolution headline the list. Along with the A7R VI, the Canon R5 Mark II, Nikon Z6 III, and Canon EOS R6 Mark III also earn top-seller badges at the retailer.

The Sony A7R VI only began shipping at the beginning of June, so the trends list offers an early glimpse at how popular the new mirrorless is. Sony’s A7R series has traditionally offered more resolution than the A7 line, but the A7R VI brings a 67.8MP full-frame sensor with a 30 fps blackout-free burst speed – that’s three times the burst speed of the A7R V.

The upgrades on the A7R VI came with a price hike – but the camera’s appearance on the top sales charts suggests photographers are more impressed with the feature mix than discouraged by the price.

The Sony A7R VI appears to have pushed the A7 V farther down the trending list, but Sony’s December 2025 launch still makes an appearance. While the camera may not have the resolution of the R series, the A7 V borrows the autofocus tech of its pricier siblings, building a reputation for its hybrid performance.

Both Canon’s late 2025 launch of the 7K open gate EOS R6 Mark III and an older pro favorite, the 45MP 8K R5 Mark II, also sit toward the top half of the top-selling mirrorless list, while the new Canon EOS R6 V also made the list.

Nikon’s full-frame Z6 III has also risen unusually high for a 2024 release – but the 24.5MP mirrorless known for its low-light autofocus also dropped to its lowest-yet price in the US during June. (The Z6 III is still $500 off at B&H).

One of Sony’s more compact full-frame mirrorless also made the mirrorless list – potentially helped by June discounts – though it's the higher resolution Sony A7CR, not the more affordable A7C II, making the list.

B&H’s list of trending cameras for June 2026 isn’t exclusive to full-frame models. Sony’s compact but quick A6700 also makes the list. Fujifilm’s mirrorless bundle that shared the most features with the trendy X100VI, the X-E5 with a 23mm f/2.8 kit lens, also makes the list, along with Canon’s budget favorite EOS R100.

A medium format model even made the top trends list, the Hasselblad X2D II 100C, a pricey but luxury 100MP model.

Trends may be good indicators, but these are the best mirrorless cameras based on expert testing.

Japan has long been one of the world's biggest camera markets and is used as an indicator of wider photography trends. Now new data from Minna Camera suggests a more complex picture than the familiar "mirrorless takeover" narrative.

Between November 2025 and June 2026, the most-traded camera on the platform was the Ricoh GR IV – a 228g compact camera and the lightest and only model of its kind in the Top 20. Despite its 2025 release, it sits at No.1 in the rankings, a position supported by strong demand and frequent stock shortages.

At the other end of the scale, heavier DSLR models continue to appear in the rankings. The Nikon D500 still appears in the Top 20 at 760g, making it the heaviest camera in the rankings, alongside long-standing models such as the D750 and D7500.

Compact vs. mirrorless vs. DSLRs

Mirrorless cameras account for 80% of the Top 20, dominating the rankings with models from Canon, Nikon, and Sony.

The Ricoh GR IV is the exception. At just 228g, it is the only compact camera in the rankings (5% of entries), yet it is also the most-traded model overall.

DSLRs make up the remaining 15% of the Top 20. Nikon is the only manufacturer represented in this category, with the D500 (11th), D750 (17th) and D7500 (19th) all appearing in the rankings.

Lighter vs. heavier gear

The mirrorless era, now almost two decades old, brought photographers smaller and lighter camera systems.

This shift is visible in the data, with 15 of the Top 20 cameras (75%) weighting 600g or less. The remaining five models (25%) all exceed 600g.

Yet the persistence of heavier DSLRs suggests that weight alone is not the defining factor for photographers buying on the used market.

For many, the used market represents one of the last opportunities to get discontinued DSLR models – or to find a high-demand compact camera that can be diffivult to purchase new.

Interestingly, Panasonic’s premium L10 doesn’t appear anywhere in the current Top 10, despite attracting attention ahead of launch thanks to its larger sensor and stronger stills and video capabilities.

For now, photographers in Japan prioritize portability, long zoom ranges and proven models over newer premium alternatives.

Among the 21 RF-mount Canon cameras launched since 2018, newest among them is the Canon EOS R6 V – with the V indicating a ‘video first’ approach and mindset.

The camera has as many similarities with the Cinema EOS range, specifically the Canon EOS C50 – but this is smaller and lighter.

But one thing, however, that the ‘V’ in the camera’s nomenclature doesn’t indicate is the presence of a ‘viewfinder’. It has none – just a 3-inch, 1.62 million-dot rear LCD screen.

Yes, its maker will argue that this full-frame camera is designed to be used handheld, possibly at arm’s length, by influencers, and therefore an eye-level viewfinder wasn’t a development priority. But there’s not even an option to add an external viewfinder as an accessory, should users wish to do so, which feels like an opportunity overlooked.

More positively, a basic boxy shape may more readily fit a variety of camera cages and rigs. And, staying with practical concerns, the space usually reserved for an EVF has given way to a cooling fan to enable extended recording times without interruption.

And yet, thanks to the generous 32.5MP sensor at its heart – inherited from the C50 and R6 Mark III – the Canon EOS R6 V is also a very capable stills camera. Photos can be captured at full resolution up to 40fps, partly because it uses an electronic, as opposed to mechanical, shutter.

The lack of a mechanical shutter will also gaslight some photography purists.

Given that the R6 V could justifiably be considered a hybrid device, it does underline my question as to why Canon has limited its appeal by not providing an eye-level viewfinder for those who prefer to shoot that way – or at least want to have the option, on occasion.

The body-only price is still considerable, even for those who do want to primarily luxuriate in 7K 60p video recording, 4K 60p oversampled or up to 120p slow-motion footage.

Canon’s promotional tagline for the EOS R6 V is "loved for handheld creative brilliance". So why limit that creativity? I can’t help but feel it would have been adored if only, like the R6 Mark III, it had provided a viewfinder as well – even as an optional extra.

With rumors rife that the Sony FX5 is arriving next month with a similar feature set, Canon has released firmware version 1.0.4.1 for the Canon EOS C50 – bringing a host of usability and workflow improvements to its newest Cinema EOS model.

The new firmware focuses on operational features rather than image quality, introducing a new Ease In / Ease Out option for digital zoom speed and expands the range of camera functions that can be controlled externally via a USB connection.

These additions are designed to improve both shooting ergonomics and production flexibility, particularly for filmmakers working with gimbals, remote-control systems and compact crews.

The new Ease In / Ease Out setting for digital zoom operations is the standout feature of the update. When enabled, the camera smooths the beginning and end of a zoom movement, creating more natural-looking transitions.

Canon says this will help operators achieve more polished zoom effects without abrupt starts or stops, making digital zoom a more practical creative tool for shoots such as documentaries, corporate videos and live events.

Beyond zoom performance, the firmware also expands USB-based camera control. Users can now operate key functions from an external device while in video mode, including recording start/stop, One-Shot AF, manual focus adjustment, shutter speed, ISO and white balance.

This matches Canon's broader push towards deeper integration with external accessories and control ecosystems, including gimbal-based operation.

With firmware version 1.0.4.1 for the EOS C50, Canon continues to focus on practical improvements that streamline production workflows and enhance shooting efficiency, mirroring some of the benefits seen in recently released firmware version 1.0.6.1 for the EOS C80.

Nobody can truly say which camera brand reigns supreme when it comes to professional sports photography, but the latest data from MPB – the world’s largest photography gear resale platform – points to Canon.

According to MPB, during the build-up to and initial 14 days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup (from January 01 to June 23), sales of the Canon EOS R1, the brand's flagship camera, rose by a whopping 344% compared to the same period last year.

At the same time, on-site searches for the Sony A9 III, the best camera for sports photography from the Alpha brand, rose by 119% but led to a more modest 63% overall increase in sales year-on-year.

“For sports photography, it’s all about features like subject tracking, continuous shooting speeds, buffer depth, low light capabilities and overall image quality," said Amy Moore, a camera expert at MPB.

"A robust camera body with great battery life, as well as quick, professional connectivity for sharing the action are also important.”

The EOS R1 is Canon’s best camera for professionals, released in late 2024. Among other top-tier features, the powerhouse captures up to 40fps with the electronic shutter and boasts in-body image stabilization of up to 8.5 stops.

The A9 III gives the R1 a solid run for its money, featuring a lightning-fast 120fps and the world’s first commercial global shutter sensor.

However, the faster sensor lacks the low-light performance of the R1's conventional stacked design – particularly with Canon's neural net processing offering up to two stops of in-camera denoising for even cleaner results.

Surprisingly, the MPB data said nothing of recent Nikon sales on the platform, although Moore did mention the Nikon Z9 – the Big N’s flagship shooter – as also being an “obvious standout” camera when it comes to professional-grade stills and video.

It's a question that has been asked ever since Canon moved to mirrorless: should you use DSLR glass on your mirrorless camera, particularly when the DSLR versions are so much cheaper? A good case in point is the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs Canon EF 50mm f/1.8.

During Amazon's latest sale, for example, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 has been slashed to just £89 in the UK. Meanwhile the mirrorless equivalent, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8, is discounted to £165.

That's massive difference. And spoiler alert: at £89 the EF lens is so ridiculously well-priced that anybody who doesn't own a nifty fifty should definitely buy it. But what are the pros and cons of doing so?

Obviously the first thing to consider is whether or not you have a lens adapter. A cheap third-party one (which I wouldn't recommend) is as little as £35, while the official Canon adapter (which I own and use) is £119. Either way, if you have to buy one to save money on an EF lens, it's probably false economy.

That aside, what are the real talking points when it comes to the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs EF 50mm f/1.8?

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs EF 50mm f/1.8: What are the differences?

If you have the opportunity to try and compare the lenses for yourself, that's the best way to see what the differences really are.

Shy of that, I can tell you my personal experience as someone who owned and used the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (review here) for years on DSLRs, before upgrading to the R System and adapting it on mirrorless cameras.

Using it with Canon's Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, you get absolutely native performance when it comes to things like autofocus speed. I know that in years past, adapting lenses has been a bit of a minefield in terms of functionality – but with the official Canon adapter, the EF 50mm performs absolutely flawlessly on any EOS R camera.

Ultimately I upgraded to the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM (review here), mainly to achieve a smaller footprint. The mount adapter works brilliantly, but it adds an extra inch or so to the front of your camera. So that was my main reason for moving to the RF version of the lens.

In and of themselves, the lenses are about the same size – so neither one really takes up any more or less space in your camera bag. The RF lens is sleeker and prettier, while the EF feels a bit more plasticky, but otherwise there's no size saving either way.

In terms of pure image quality, I don't think anyone could tell the difference. I look back at shots in my portfolio and, without looking at the EXIF, even I can't tell them apart. The RF lens is sharper across the frame while pixel peeping, but it's not a profound difference.

Optically, both the EF and RF versions render similar results – the f/1.8 designs are built for economy, not performance (for that, you'll need to look to the f/1.4 and f/1.2 models). But unless you're zooming into all your shots at 200%, you won't notice much difference.

When it comes to focusing speed, here there is a difference. Both lenses feature stepper motors (the "STM" in the name), but the EF version is slower and noisier.

Factor in that the EF mount only has eight electronic contact points, compared to the twelve on the RF mount, and the mirrorless version communicates faster and keeps up better when it comes to movement and subject tracking.

However, I don't think anyone is really using these lenses for fast action or sports – so the speed difference will be minor or even unnoticable to most people.

In truth, the only real difference in practice is that the RF lens has a customizable control ring on the nose. This can be toggled via a switch to act as a manual focus ring or to adjust exposure values such as ISO. It's not something I really use on any of my RF lenses, but it might be a consideration for some.

By contrast, the switch on the EF lens toggles between auto and manual focus; to do this on the RF version, you need to go into menus and make the change in-camera. So if you're someone who likes to snap into manual for fine focusing, this might also be a deal maker / breaker.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs EF 50mm f/1.8: Which should you buy?

As noted, I upgraded from the EF version to the RF version specifically to reduce the size (by removing the adapter from the equation). Yes the lens is slightly sharper and a fair bit snappier to focus, but in real-world use neither of those have been a factor.

Truth be told, if I was buying a nifty fifty today and looking at £89 for the EF lens and £165 for the RF, I would buy the DSLR version in a heartbeat. The price saving outweighs the performance benefits.

On top of that, the RF lens only works on my mirrorless cameras but the EF one works on my DSLRs as well. So in that sense, the EF is a much more versatile option.

If you want a really noticeable performance boost on your mirrorless camera, you're looking at the Canon RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM (or even the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM). Pound for pound, though, I suggest saving some cash and getting yourself the EF lens.

I've made no secret of my love for the Canon EOS RP (review), which to this day is one of my favorite members of the R System family. In fact, paired with a tiny pancake lens like the Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 and I think it's one of the best street photography setups you can buy – especially full-frame, especially at this price!

I have to note that the RP has just been discontinued in Asia, so stocks likely won't last long – especially at this price. But while the Canon EOS R8 is technically its successor, and is technically a better camera, the RP is by far the better buy with a price tag this low.

To this day it's Canon's smallest full-frame camera, which is something to be celebrated in a world where cameras are getting bigger and bigger. By contrast, the RP is even smaller than the Canon EOS 800D – a super-compact APS-C DSLR.

It's built around a 26.2MP full-frame sensor that delivers beautiful image quality, even though its wider specs are better suited to street and sedate photography rather than fast action and high-res video.

Its burst speed tops out at 5fps, which is enough for slow-moving subjects and general shooting, while the video is capped at 4K 25p and FullHD 60p. However, it's important to know that 4K shooting loses Dual Pixel CMOS AF and suffers about a 1.76x crop.

Other than 4K (where it reverts to contrast AF), the Dual Pixel-powered autofocus does a great job. It lacks the subject-detection algorithms of more recent cameras, but with 4,779 AF points and both face and eye tracking, it's capable for pretty much everything except the tough jobs.

All good things must come to an end. And so it is that Canon has quietly started sunsetting the Canon EOS RP in Asia, first indicated by the "Sales ended" tag on the official Canon Japan store listing.

While the RP hasn't yet officially moved to the company's discontinued products listing, and though it's still being sold by both Canon USA and Canon UK, this is the first indication that the svelte mirrorless camera is being Old Yellered.

With Canon Japan having exhausted its inventory, it's only a matter of time before stocks are gone elsewhere in the world – so if you've been thinking about getting one, now is the time.

This marks the end of the first generation of EOS R cameras (following the original Canon EOS R) – but, for me personally, it's also the end of the first Canon mirrorless camera that I truly fell in love with.

The R System wasn't Canon's first mirrorless foray, of course; that was the APS-C-only M System. But while I thought the EOS M50 was a neat little camera, I don't think anybody ever felt the same affinity for M cameras that they did for the R series.

I bought the EOS R on day one, trading in my 6D Mark II so that I could join Canon's mirrorless revolution from the beginning. The original R was essentially a 5D Mark IV in drag, making it ostensibly an upgrade from the 6D Mark II. However, even though the RP was essentially an adjacent model, it was the RP that I really wished I'd gone for.

The Canon EOS RP lacked mirrorless essentials like in-body image stabilization, and the 4K video was tragically cropped and robbed of Dual Pixel AF. Crucially, though, it was Canon's smallest and lightest ever full-frame camera, coming in at just 440g body only and measuring 132.5 x 85 x 70 mm (making it smaller and lighter than the 800D DSLR).

And it was very aggressively priced, launching at just $1,299 / £1,399 for the body and the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R to use DSLR lenses straight out of the box. All of which contributed to the name, "RP", meaning "Popular" – in the Japanese sense that it's a camera meant 'for everybody'.

Even today, while the Canon EOS R8 is a better camera, the RP is still Canon's best value full-frame camera.

It's currently available for just $617 at Walmart in the US or only £799 from Amazon in the UK – an absolute steal for anyone wanting to upgrade to full-frame photography or get into Canon's mirrorless ecosystem.

So, whether you want to get one while you still can or it's a camera that you never knew existed, please join me in pouring some sip on the kerb for the Canon EOS RP. My first love of the R System.

Taking photos in a downpour is a major challenge – not to mention potentially dangerous to the camera gear. But I’ve just stumbled across a set of photos that perfectly illustrate why sometimes the best photographs are the most challenging ones.

Patrick Smith (@patricksmithphotos), a sports photographer working with Getty Images, turned a recent “torrential downpour” into an opportunity for dazzling mid-game portraits of the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles.

Last month, when the Tigers traveled to Baltimore, the skies opened up in what Smith describes as a “downpour.” Instead of trying to shield his lens from the droplets, Smith appears to have embraced the rain, taking shots from a low angle that allowed the rain to gather on his lens.

The stadium lights hitting those droplets turned the rain into a dramatic flare and dotted the images with bokeh. Rather than wiping off his lens, Smith turned towards where players waited on deck, creating striking photos that were taken in the middle of a professional baseball game, yet felt more like creative portraits than sports photography.

According to the photo’s metadata, Smith took the shots with the Canon EOS R1 – a mirrorless camera that is, thankfully, weather-sealed. However, Smith also used the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM, a budget wide-angle that isn’t weather-sealed and typically needs extra protection to work in the rain.

But, that ultra-wide perspective allowed the photographer to surround the players in a sea of rain-created bokeh and flare.

Smith used a mix of different settings for the shots. In shots dotted with shaped bokeh, he used a narrower f/13 aperture to help define the shape of the bokeh and turn the stadium lights into starbursts.

In another shot with more abstract-shaped lens flare, he used an f/2.8 aperture and ISO 2000 in order to freeze the rain in the background into droplets at 1/2000th of a second shutter speed.

The game wasn’t the first time Smith had turned bad weather into a golden opportunity for unusual sports photography. I previously came across Smith’s work while browsing through photos of the 2026 Winter Olympics, where Smith turned snow into a dramatic framing tool, along with using techniques like shutter drag.

I’m impressed both by the way Smith has managed to turn challenging weather into a framing tool – and the fact that he shot what look like portraits in the middle of an MLB game.

A compact camera so trendy that it's still hard to find in stock more than two years after its launch has returned to the top of sales charts in Japan. The Fujifilm X100VI was the best-selling camera overall from one Japanese retailer last month, with the number one for the last several months, the Sony A7 V, dropping to second.

The Sony A7 V is the only non-Fujifilm camera in the top five in the latest sales data from Japanese photo retailer Map Camera, which recently shared the top ten cameras for May. While trends don’t always translate across geographic borders, with many major camera brands located in Japan, the region is one to watch.

1) Fujifilm X100VI

The Fujifilm X100VI has gone so viral that finding one in stock is often a challenge – but limited stock is likely affecting where the retro compact camera falls in the sales charts. In the latest numbers from the retailer, the Fujifilm X100VI has returned to take the number one spot.

Map Camera notes that the supply of the X100VI remains unstable, more than two years since the camera launched – and went viral on social media – in February 2024. But while the retailer says that stock is still unstable, the fact that there was enough stock for the camera to return to number one is interesting. I wonder if perhaps the popular camera may be finally catching up with demand.

The X100VI’s popularity stems in part from its compact, retro design along with a 40MP sensor and bright 23mm (full frame equivalent) f/2.0 lens.

2) Sony A7 V

The Sony A7 V comes in second place, the first time the newly launched mirrorless camera has fallen from first place in Map Camera's month-to-month numbers since launching late in 2025. The A7 V boasts 30fps burst speeds and smarter autofocus without moving to the price of Sony’s higher-end models.

Interestingly, Map Camera reports that most of the Sony A7 V sales are for the body only. That has the retailer hypothesizing that a lot of the sales are coming from existing Sony users who already own some E-Mount lenses.

The newly announced Sony A7R VI may threaten to outdo its lower resolution sibling, but with shipping beginning in June, it's not part of Map Camera's May numbers.

3) Fujifilm X-T30 III

The success of the X100 series seems to have bled over into Fujifilm’s mirrorless cameras, particularly those that sit at a lower price point than the X100VI. The Fujifilm X-T30 III is fairly compact for a mirrorless camera, yet still has a viewfinder.

The more budget-friendly X-T30 III, however, has Fujifilm’s previous-generation sensor, shooting 26.1MP photos.

4) Fujifilm X-E5

The mirrorless camera most similar to the popular X100VI is arguably the Fujifilm X-E5, which shares the same sensor and retro rangefinder-inspired design, but has interchangeable lenses (though there are a few other notable differences).

The X-E5 also pairs with a 23mm f/2.8 kit lens that keeps the camera feeling more like a compact camera than a mirrorless camera. The mirrorless’ success could potentially stem from the still-long wait list for the X100VI – or perhaps from the flexibility of swappable lenses.

5) Fujifilm X-M5

Fujifilm’s most affordable mirrorless camera has also seen limited stock availability since its launch, but the compact vlogging mirrorless camera is still proving to be popular. The Fujifilm X-M5 has the same resolution as the X-T30 III, but axes the viewfinder for an even more compact design.

6) Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III

Launched in 2019 but revived through social media trends, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III continues to sell well, despite limited availability. Map Camera says that the new special edition G7 X Mark III was included in these numbers, helping to push the one-inch sensor compact camera with a zoom lens higher up the list.

7) Panasonic Lumix ZS300 / TS300

Panasonic’s compact super zoom, which is called the Lumix TX3 in Japan but the Lumix ZS300 in the US and the Lumix TZ300 in the UK, only launched at the end of May but has already made the top ten. The camera’s 1-inch sensor with a 24-360mm equivalent zoom is already proving to be quite popular, as the camera was number one on Japanese retailer Yodobashi’s list for the second half of May 2026.

It will be interesting to see how the camera’s ranking changes next month, as Panasonic recently launched the Lumix L10, which begins shipping in June. Panasonic Japan has already said orders have exceeded expectations, so it will be interesting to see where the compact camera that mixes a shorter zoom lens with a larger Micro Four Thirds sensor fits into the trends.

8) Sony A7C II

The Sony A7C II is the more compact travel-ready mirrorless for Sony shooters, and the camera’s mix of size and price has it regularly appearing among top ten lists, despite being launched in 2023.

9) Sony A6700

The Sony A6700 is a compact mirrorless camera housing an APS-C sensor, offering more speed and performance over the more affordable A6400. Map Camera notes that the majority of sales for the A6700 are for the bundle with an 18-135mm kit lens, hinting that many buyers are first-time Sony users or photographers who want something small with a do-it-all lens.

10) Ricoh GR IV

The Ricoh GR IV is another compact camera that’s hard to find, so limited supply may be affecting numbers. Regardless, Map Camera still managed to get enough of the tiny camera for it to slide in at the bottom of the top ten.

The GR IV series is known for cramming an APS-C into a camera that’s still only around the size of a basic point-and-shoot.

For five months, Sony's new full-frame mirrorless was the No.1 camera in Japan at retailer Map Camera. But now, a two-year-old compact camera has reclaimed the top spot, beating the Sony A7 V.

Map Camera's new No.1 best-selling camera is the Fujifilm X100VI – an APS-C compact that we rated as the best retro compact camera on the market to date.

That might not sound surprising for one of the world's most sought-after cameras, except for one thing: the X100VI launched more than two years ago but remains notoriously difficult to buy. Whenever stock becomes available, demand appears strong enough to send Fujifilm's retro compact back into the Top 10 – and even to No.1.

Japan's new No.1: Fujifilm X100VI

When stock is available, photographers get a mix of classic rangefinder styling and modern APS-C performance, paired with a fixed 35mm-equivalent lens and Fuji's signature dial-based controls.

That blend of style, simplicity and image quality has helped the X100VI remain one of the most sought-after cameras on the market more than two years after its launch.

Four compacts in the Top 10

Compact cameras are very popular right now, offering a ready-to-shoot package in a pocketable form. Unlike camera phones, they give photographers a dedicated shooting experience with tactile controls.

The latest Map Camera chart reflects that trend. Alongside the Fujifilm X100VI, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III ranks sixth, while the Ricoh GR IV comes tenth.

Interestingly, the newly launched Panasonic Lumix TX3 (ZS300 in the US, TZ300 in the UK) takes seventh place. While that might not sound spectacular, the compact has already shot straight to No.1 at Japanese retailer Yodobashi.

Launched in May 2025, the TX3 combines a 20.1MP 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor with a Leica-certified 25-360mm equivalent 15x zoom lens, delivering a focal range that few genuinely pocketable cameras can match.

That flexibility helps set it apart from rivals such as Canon's PowerShot G7 X Mark III.

Given its strong start elsewhere, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Lumix TX3 climbing further up Map Camera's chart in the coming month.

Just weeks after releasing one of the most feature-packed firmware updates for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, Canon has issued another update to fix a problem introduced by the previous firmware.

The fix arrives for the hybrid flagship camera that we described in our review as "still the best damn camera you can buy."

Firmware Ver. 1.3.0 added a range of new capabilities, including an American Football Action Priority mode, improved people detection and tracking, DPRAW support, expanded video monitoring tools, and the ability to transfer AF (autofocus) settings between cameras.

However, the update also introduced an issue that could cause the camera to stop functioning properly when Touch & Drag AF was used with Whole Area AF.

The new Firmware Ver. 1.3.1 specifically fixes the AF problem – but also adds the features introduced in the previous update – good news for users who chose to wait and see whether the firmware would introduce any unexpected issues.

This firmware includes fixes for the following issues identified in Version 1.3.0: Fixes an issue in which the camera may stop functioning properly when Touch & drag AF is used with the [AF area] set to "Whole Area AF".

This firmware also incorporates the changes that were introduced in Firmware Version 1.3.0 – so if you have not updated your R5 Mark II yet, Version 1.3.1 gets you all the benefits of the last firmware too.

Please perform the firmware update with only the firmware file to be updated stored on the memory card.

It's smart to wait a week or two after release to see if any users hit snags. In the past, brands have had a few hiccups with major updates – for instance, introducing memory-setting bugs or minor interface glitches before being reissued.

The Hasselblad X2D II 100C has unexpectedly surged back to No.1 in Japan's latest Yodobashi best-seller rankings – overtaking the Sony A7 V in a surprise shift at the top of the charts. The 100MP medium format flagship had previously fallen out of the ranking entirely.

The Sony A7 V had dominated the list since its launch in December 2025, holding the top position for months as one of Japan's most popular full-frame cameras. Its drop to second place marks the end of a long run at the top.

The latest Top 10 also shows a striking return in Japan's mid-range mirrorless market, with the Nikon Z50 II standard zoom kit re-entering the rankings after a nine-month absence.

Hasselblad vs. Sony

The X2D II 100C is an unusual camera to top a sales chart at this level. As a 100MP medium format flagship available for $7,399 / £6,400, it sits in a completely different price bracket to other cameras listed in Yodobashi's Top 10 – including the Sony A7 V (priced at $2,898 / £2,799) – yet it still managed to reclaim the top position in Japan.

It features 5-axis stabilization offering up to 10 stops, up to 15.3 stops of dynamic range, LiDAR-assisted AF (autofocus), and Hasselblad's signature color science, all designed for high-end stills performance.

By contrast, the Sony A7 V pushes forward with a 33MP partially stacked sensor and upgraded AI subject detection – making it a highly capable hybrid full-frame model – though its video performance is facing competition from rivals...

Fujifilm dominates Top 5

Fujifilm dominates the upper end of Japan's rankings, with two cameras in the Top 5. The X-M5 kit sits in third place, followed by the X-T30 III kit in fourth.

Both are retro cameras featuring a 26.1-megapixel APS-C X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor paired with the X-Processor 5 – an award-winning combination recognized for its strong image quality and performance.

The next Yodobashi update will reveal whether the Sony A7V can return to No.1, or if the Hasselblad X2D II 100X will hold onto its position at the top of Japan's best-seller chart. Also entering the mix is Sony's A7R VI, which arrived in June and could further shake up the rankings.

A recently launched compact camera has wasted no time making an impact in Japan. Just weeks after its release, the Panasonic Lumix TX3 (aka the Lumix S300 in the US and Lumix TZ300 in the UK) has climbed to number one in Yodobashi's latest compact camera sales rankings, overtaking some of the most sought-after models on the market.

While the Fujifilm X100VI and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III have become cult favourites among photographers and content creators, Panasonic's tiny new travel zoom has beaten them all to the top spot.

Such is the demand for these portable cameras that even a lack of availability hasn't dampened consumer appetite for them. Five of the top ten models are currently on backorder, yet still rank among Japan's best-sellers after limited restocks reached stores.

It will be interesting to see how the launch of the Panasonic Lumix L10 – a premium compact offering a more modest zoom range but far superior stills and video capability – affects the rankings next month.

Trendy travel zoom compact camera

The Lumix ZS300 / TZ300 arrives at a time when the demand for compact cameras is at its highest level in years. Unlike many of today's most sought-after compacts, which focus on large sensors and fixed lenses, Panasonic has opted for a different formula: maximum versatility.

The camera combines a 20.1MP 1-inch back side-illuminated CMOS sensor with a Leica-branded 25-360mm equivalent 15x zoom lens, delivering a focal range that few genuinely pocketable cameras can match.

That flexibility helps set it apart from rivals such as Sony's RX100 Mark VII and Canon's G7 X Mark III. While both remain popular choices, neither offers the zoom reach, giving the Lumix a clear advantage for travel, wildlife and everyday photography.

Half of Japan's best-selling compacts are sold out

The compact camera boom shows little sign of slowing down. Five of the ten cameras currently featured in Yodobashi's top ten ranking are listed as backordered, highlighting the gap between demand and available supply.

The trend isn't limited to Japan. Many of these models are difficult to find in the US and UK as well, with shortages continuing to push buyers towards waiting lists and, in some cases, online scalpers and grey-market listings.

Whether the Lumix ZS300 / TZ300 can hold onto the top spot remains to be seen. If Panasonic can maintain supply while rival models continue to face stock shortages, the Lumix ZS300 / TZ300 will be well placed to build on its strong start.

A US$4,599 medium-format lens isn't the kind of model you'd expect to see competing with mainstream full-frame best-sellers. Yet the Hasselblad XCD 35-100E has been doing exactly that in Japan, consistently ranking among the country's most popular lenses and now claiming the No.1 spot in Yodobashi's latest sales chart for the second half of May.

The world's fastest medium-format zoom is Hasselblad's second "trinity" lens for the X-System and is versatile enough to replace up to seven premium prime lenses worth over US$20,000.

Why is the XCD 35-100E so popular?

In real-world use, the XCD 35-100E can handle a wide range of genres.

From street photography and architecture to portrait, it replaces multiple prime lenses while maintaining the image quality expected from Hasselblad's high-resolution system.

That versatility is one of the reasons it has become such a strong seller in Japan.

The fastest (and best) zoom lens for medium format cameras

With the Hasselblad XCD 35-100E, the brand has delivered one of its most capable lenses to date.

And the competition is strong: Sony's 70-200mmm is a key lens in the company's pro lineup, while Nikon's latest Z 70-200mm successor arrived to huge acclaim after the original was described as "probably the best 70-200mm zoom in the world," in our review.

While the XCD 35-100E is not a constant f/2.8 throughout its entire range, its ability to reach f/2.8 at the wide end still makes it the fastest autofocus (AF) medium-format zoom currently available.

Combined with Hasselblad's latest AF system in the X2D II 100C, it delivers a level of responsiveness that brings medium-format shooting closer to the speed and flexibility traditionally associated with full-frame systems.

Lower demand for 70-200mm in Japan

The second half of May shows a modest shift in the ranking. Canon's RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z is absent from the top 10 this time, with the popular 70-200mm category represented by one fewer lens overall.

At the same time, the rankings continue to favour versatile zoom ranges. Standard 24-70mm lenses remain a staple, while extended-range options such as 24-105mm, 28-200mm, and 100-400mm optics continue to appear regularly across the top 10.

The next best-seller chart could see further changes following the arrival of Sony's FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS.

High-profile launches have historically performed strongly in Japan's rankings, with Nikon's Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II, for example, quickly climbing to the No.1 spot after release before settling into the chart.

You may have heard about the "Wendy's camera". If you haven't, yesterday the restaurant chain gave away 20 Wendy's-inspired Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III cameras as part of its Wendy's Rewards program, which has been taking place every Wednesday since mid-May.

At first glance, these were bright-red versions of the G7X decorated with Wendy's-themed graphics – from the logo to burgers and fries. In actuality, the cameras were just wearing red silicone skins with Wendy's stickers on them; they weren't truly special-edition models.

Still, given that the G7X Mark III is still one of the best-selling compact cameras and is out of stick almost everywhere, it was still a great chance to get hold of one (and for free, no less).

But this was far from the first time that a fast food chain has cashed in with a collectable camera – and some of them have been unique, limited edition models…

McDonald's Fries Camera

Launched in 1997, this camera has become a bit of a cult classic among film photography fans.

Designed like a carton of McDonald's fries, this 110 film camera had a hatch that lifts up to reveal the lens and viewfinder, enabling you to take a photo while holding a packet of french fries against your face.

A limited number of these cameras were refurbished by Retrospekt a few years ago, but sadly they've long sold out (though the brand has a bunch of neat vintage 35mm and Polaroid cameras).

KFC Christmas Camera

You may or may not be aware that KFC has a unique relationship with Christmas over in Japan, stemming from the fact that Colonel Sanders looks like Santa Claus and the fact that the company spent years marketing KFC as a Christmas meal tradition.

That led to tie-in products like this one, also released in 1997, to celebrate the festive season. Surprisingly, this bad boy actually has a cold shoe – so you could actually mount a flash unit if you wanted to!

If you live in Japan, there are enough of these kicking around that you can occasionally find them in thrift stores. Otherwise, they're pretty rare to find online – though you can buy one from Etsy right now.

Burger King / Coca Cola 110 Camera

If you were around in the Eighties, you'll undoubtedly have seen this exact same 110 film camera with any number of brands and logos on it. This was the peak of 110 film's popularity, and these generic cameras were popular promotional items.

Such is the case with this Coca Cola and Burger King-branded model, which is the least exciting of the cameras on this page but also the least daft and most pocketable. I had at least three of these when I was younger, and the results were terrible from all of them.

For much of the last few years, the Canon EOS R10 has been one of the best-selling mirrorless cameras in Japan, consistently holding top position as a go-to option for beginners entering photography.

Now, the latest sales data from Japanese retailer BCN reveals that a video-first camera – without a viewfinder – has overtaken the long-time bestseller. The new leader is the Sony ZV-E10 II, a compact mirrorless interchangeable lens camera designed primarily for video creators, vloggers, and hybrid shooters.

On paper, the Canon EOS R10 and Sony ZV-E10 II compete in the same APS-C mirrorless category. However, they represent two very different shooting philosophies.

Canon EOS R10 vs. Sony ZV-E10 II

The Canon EOS R10 follows a more traditional camera design. It includes an electronic viewfinder, a deeper grip and handling that feels closer to DSLR-era photography.

The Sony ZV-E10 II, by contrast, is designed first and foremost for creators. It removes the viewfinder entirely, prioritising a compact body, lighter weight, and video-focused features.

While traditional photography tools still matter, a growing number of users appear to prioritize video creation, portability, and ease of use over classic still-first design.

Why no viewfinder can be better for video creators

The missing viewfinder – most photographers consider essential – plays a much smaller role in modern content creation workflows.

In video-first shooting, users are typically working at arm's length or with the camera mounted on a tripod or gimbal. As a result, flip-out screens, touch controls, selfie framing, and AF systems such as face and eye tracking become far more important than eye-level composition through a viewfinder.

Removing the viewfinder also has a practical design benefit. It allows manufacturers to reduce the overall size and weight of the camera body, contributing to the compact, lightweight form factor that many creator-focused cameras are designed around.

Whether the ZV-E10 II's rise is a sustained trend or a temporary spike remains to be seen – but its climb from fifth place last month to No.1 suggests a shift in buyer priorities.
