I was lucky enough to go to the launch of the Fujifilm X-H2S – so it has been a camera that holds a special place in my heart. So it was great to spot that this hybrid mirrorless camera has now dropped to its best price this year - costing  £1,799 at Clifton Cameras. That's a saving of £500 on the recommended retail price - and £200 less than at Amazon, and some other well-known camera stores.

I love that, unlike most other Fujifilm models, you get an information screen on the top plate of the camera. But it is its high-speed shooting specification that are the big appeal. It has a top motordrive speed for stills of 40fps, with a 40MP resolution. And for video you get open gate shooting with a sensor scan time of just 1/80sec to minimize rolling shutter.

The X-H2S is the more expensive sibling to the X-H2 - so it can be confusing to decide whether the pricier version is the right one for you. The two cameras look and handle the same, but as you can read in our exhaustive Fujifilm X-H2 vs X-H2S comparison there are some serious, if subtle, differences under the hood. 

But the easy way, perhaps, to pick the two cameras apart is to think of the X-H2S for speed, and the X-H2 is designed for resolution. But as the H in the name might imply - both of the 2022 X-H models are hybrid cameras - designed for those that need high-performance video as well as great stills shooting.

Fujifilm itself talks about the X-H2S appealing to those who need the faster autofocus - so those shooting sport, aircraft, or wildlife say. And that the X-H2's higher resolution, means it is more attractive to commercial, product and landscape shooters.

This is by far the most enticing deal I've seen in a year. It is a dream camera from legendary Swedish medium-format specialists Hasselblad. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this beautiful camera if I had the money. With £1,000 off, this is the lowest price I've ever seen camera for a year!

Amazingly, the Canon EOS 90D is now five years old this year, but because it was such a forward-thinking camera, it still feels pretty current. And that's good news, as this is one of the hottest deals available in the Amazon Spring Sale which is running this week. Amazon has cut over £320 off the price overnight, bringing down the price of this DSLR to just £899.99.

The question is, is the Canon EOS 90D still current enough to warrant a recommendation in 2024? I still rate it as one of the best cameras for wildlife and one of the best cameras for sports – two categories where APS-C cameras have a real niche, and where DSLRs are still proving pretty popular despite the many advantages of mirrorless.

So what does the Canon EOS 90D offer? At its heart is Canon's breakthrough 32.5MP sensor – the first APS-C sensor to break the 26MP barrier. This comes with a 1.6x crop factor that is a real boon for genres where you need extra reach, as it increases the effective focal length of your lenses (a 300mm optic becomes a 480mm, for example). 

This is complemented by a 10fps burst rate that, while conservative by today's standards, is still good enough for shooting fast action like wild animals or sports. It is, however, held back by a slightly limited buffer of about 25 RAWs.

With Dual Pixel Autofocus, the 90D is as formidable as a mirrorless camera – even for shooting video, which isn't something you'd normally choose to do with a DSLR. The fully articulating screen and uncropped 4K actually make it a powerful moviemaking machine.

While it doesn't have an electronic viewfinder, being a DSLR has distinct advantages – most notably the battery life, where mirrorless users will be green with envy at the  1,300-shot performance.  So, if you've been eyeing up the Canon EOS 90D, I say go for it. It may be a little long in the tooth now, but it still stands proudly even next to its modern mirrorless counterparts.

We have just spotted another superb deal on Canon's latest 4K camcorder - which will save you nearly £300 on this pro-grade video camera from Amazon. The Canon Legria HF G70 was launched last year, and builds on previous high-end digital camcorders in Canon's range - and now at  just £796.02 at Amazon it is a real bargain (and unbelievably even cheaper than we saw it over Black Friday and in the Boxing Day sales).

With most cameras and camera phones now shooting video, so may well ask why anyone would want a camcorder - a type of video camera that had its heyday in the 1990s, when they recorded on tape. And indeed, there are fewer models around nowadays, as fewer people are buying them.

But the key attractions of a camcorder is that it has a big built-in zoom. In the case of the Canon Legria HF G70 optical zoom - the equivalent of having a built-in 30-600mm lens. So capable of everything from wide shots to super-telephoto close-ups of wildlife and action. 

What's more, camcorders (unlike your phone, and most stills cameras) are designed for shooting video. There is a hand strap that ensures you keep the set-up steady - with motorized zoom controls perfectly placed for use by your right index finger. We saw some great twin-lens camera kit deals over Black Friday, but we have just checked some of these deals are still running - and some of them have dropped in price even further!

If you're investing in a camera for the first time, there is a better approach to trying to find a camera deal and then trying to find a lens deal to match it – and the answer is to buy a twin-lens kit. 

If you're unfamiliar with the term, this means a bundle that includes a camera (usually with an APS-C sensor) and two "kit lenses". These are general-purpose optics that cover one of two focal ranges: standard and telephoto. 

Usually a camera comes bundled with just one of these kit options (typically the standard as that's the most widely used). Looking for a twin kit lens option offers great value, but more than that it means that you won't need to buy another lens unless you really, really want to – after all, you have an enormous 18-250mm range, covering pretty much all the photography bases! 

The best twin lens kit camera deals

It's not often that Leicas are discounted, but this is an offer that's flown under the radar: £1,200 off a Leica SL2 mirrorless camera with a Summicron prime lens or Vario zoom – remarkable!

Every photographer – myself included – has dreamed of that prestigious Red Dot at one point or another, I even own two myself!  but while this price could be out of reach for most of us, with over a grand shaved off the price, a new Leica is now nearer the realm of affordability for some!

Three bundles are available in the UK: one with the Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 Asph zoom lens, and the other with either the Summicron-SL 35 f/2 Asph or Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 Asph prime lenses. 

Personally, I'd go for that nifty fifty, as I'm a big fan of prime lenses and use a 50mm, which I think is a fantastic all-rounder that covers everything from street photography to portraiture (for what it's worth, I'd also pick that limited-run silver body as well). However, 24-70mm is a more versatile choice and I loved using it when I reviewed it – either way, you can't go wrong!

Fujifilm has been offering some pretty big discounts on its best cameras and lenses since Black Friday, but all good things must come to an end as they look set to end on January 18 - that means you have just two days left!

The two promotions offer savings across Fujifilm's X series and GFX systems, offering huge cashback options for the former and outright outrageous discounts for the latter. I have highlighted some key deals below:

These are a few of my choices that are available under the Fujifilm promotion, but there are many more to take advantage of. As the site's resident Fujifilm fan, I may be slightly biased, but both the X series and the GFX system have been pushing boundaries over the past few years. 

The X series has produced some of the best hybrid cameras on the market, as well as some of the best cameras for street photography. The retro and inconspicuous style offers both great form and function, and when used in conjunction with the Fujifilm film simulations, it is as close to shooting film as you can get without actually shooting film. 

The GFX system offers a different and unique experience. It wasn't that long ago that medium format cameras rarely left the studio, but the GFX system offers the same stunning image quality but with more maneuverability and versatility, making it one of the best camera systems for landscapes and portraits alike. 

If you are on the fence about jumping into a new camera system, Fujifilm offers a great loan scheme, where you can try out cameras and lenses before you take the leap. 

But if you feel ready I'd recommend taking advantage of these awesome deals as you only have until January 18!

We have just spotted that the Fujifilm X-S10 has dropped to its lowest ever price - beating the deals we saw over Black Friday. On sale at Wex, it will cost you £1,149 - once you have claimed your £100 cashback from Fujifilm.

The Fujifilm X-S10 may not be the most recent APS-C mirrorless camera in the X series - and has recently been upgraded with the arrival of the Fujifilm X-S20. However, it has been one of our favorite models since its launch in 2020 - and now is an absolute bargain thanks to the price reduction and cashback, which will save you £250. Fujifilm's winter cashback ends on January 18 - and then you need to claim online by February 18.

The X-S10, when it launched, was a completely new category of cameras for Fujifilm, with a more intuitive control layout, thanks to the traditional mode dial on the top panel. It's got a much deeper handgrip than other X-series cameras, and is still smaller than the Fujifilm X-T4. Within that small body is also an in-body image stabilization system that offers up to six stops of compensation for camera shake.

This APS-C format camera has 26 megapixels on tap, and a phase-detect AF system with Tracking AF for moving subjects and Face/Eye AF. And, of course, it can shoot 4K video, but at up 30fps (instead of 60fps you'll get on flagship models), with limitations on clip lengths. That said, this isn't a professional-level shooter, so there's plenty here for many enthusiasts and hobbyists, including a whopping 20fps burst speed when using the camera's electronic shutter (8fps using its mechanical shutter).

Sacrifices have been made to make it affordable, but not where it truly matters. There's a single card slot, a slightly lower resolution viewfinder as compared to the X-T4, say, and no weather-proofing. 

Did the annual Black Friday rush in November capsize camera shipments in October?

CIPA (the Camera & Imaging Products Association) has released its latest report, providing an overview of digital camera sales and shipments over the past year in comparison with the previous two. Shipments of both interchangeable and lens-integrated cameras were plotted on a graph showing how the market reacted in 2023. 

The health of the digital camera market had been recovering for most of the year, after being decimated during the pandemic. However, CIPA's results show that a major dip in October / November has significantly skewed what would have been an improved and steady year. Could this be an effect of the ever-increasing popularity of Black Friday, and people holding out for better deals? Or were camera manufacturers under so much demand that shipments stalled? 

In April and May 2023, shipments of interchangeable lens cameras were greatly increased over the same period in previous years, before steadying to corresponding levels from June to October. October / November, however, saw a significant decrease. 

This may be a result of Black Friday, a commercial promotion at the end of November aimed at providing the best deals before the holiday season. The dip in shipments could be due to people holding off buying cameras in October and waiting for the perfect Black Friday deal at the end of November. It will be interesting to see the data for December, to see if there was an influx of shipments over the extended Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

On the other hand, another possibility for the decline is the lack of new releases towards the end of the year. The last major launch was the Fujifilm GFX 100 II in September, and that isn't exactly your everyday consumer camera!

The data shows that fixed (integrated) lens camera shipments appear to have been a lot lower in 2023 than in 2022 and 2021, although they were consistent throughout the year. Fixed-lens models, particularly some of the best compact cameras, have been growing in popularity in recent years, so much so that they have exceeded expectations – and cameras like the Fujifilm X100V are still hard to get. I expect this data to increase over 2024, as fixed lens cameras such as the successors to the X100V and Ricoh GR III are rumored.

Among interchangeable lens cameras, the 86,575 DSLRs shipped were vastly overshadowed by the 415,342 mirrorless cameras. The figures show that DSLR shipments are down a whopping 50%, seeing the fastest growth for mirrorless cameras so far, as the drawn-out death of the DSLR continues.

It is useful to get an insight into how the camera market is behaving, as it provides a gauge of the health of the medium – and to show recovery during a global cost of living crisis is encouraging. With many camera manufacturers rumored to be releasing new models in 2024, I can envision market growth, especially with many of these rumored releases being new flagship models. However, an increase in sales may also mean an increase in shipping times!

Why is this lens so coveted? I first fell in love with it back in 2018, when I used it at Canon's insane cyberpunk EOS R launch event. Shooting in nightclub-like lighting conditions, its f/1.2 aperture not only ensured great performance and autofocus in limited illumination – it gave that beautiful, blown-out background blur that photographers love (check out a sample from that night below).

A few years ago my new year's resolution was to make my photography business more legitimate. I printed business cards, built a website and started creating a more professional online presence. However, the last few years have been tough on everyone; jobs have dwindled and more and more businesses are going for the do-it-yourself approach when it comes to photography. With that in mind, I can't justify splashing out almost £200 to keep my Squarespace site running, so I'm looking into alternatives. 

The thought of building a whole new website from scratch is daunting. It took me ages to build my Squarespace site and create something that not only looked great but reflected who I am as a photographer as well as the services I offer. Squarespace made it easy to design each page, add text boxes, pictures, quotes, videos and even embed my Instagram feed so switching to an alternative isn't an easy decision but it's a necessary one. 

When I first signed up to Squarespace I used my brother's student discount which gave me 50% off plus a free domain for the first year so it worked out at just £108 for the whole year including the domain. Since I opted for the business account it cost £216 in the second year plus £19.20 for the domain. After a quiet year selling prints, I switched back to a personal account in my third year costing me a £175 in total but that's still significantly more than I initially paid. 

I love the look of my Squarespace site, the website builder is easy to navigate, everything comes together quickly and within a few hours, you have a website ready to launch. Even if you've never built or designed a website before, there are lots of templates and page layouts but that's the case with almost all website builders, not just Squarespace – as we covered in How to build a brilliant photo website.

Most of my work comes through existing clients, word of mouth or Instagram which begs the question, why bother having a website at all when Instagram is free? I think having your work neatly organized and displayed on a website makes you seem more legitimate. I can describe who I am, the packages I offer, how much I charge and provide client testimonials. While the number of jobs I get through my website may have decreased, the jobs I have got over the last few years have paid for it so I do think it’s worth having one – I just think it’s time to look for a cheaper often. 

Format and Zenfolio are both currently offering 50% off all plans so you can create a website from as little as $3.50/£2 or $5/£4 respectively when you pay annually. The basic packages are better suited to photographers just starting who don't require huge amounts of storage space, don't need an online store and just need the basic web pages (about section, contact, gallery etc). If your business is more established, a pro or pro plus subscription may be better suited as it gives you access to a personalized email, more storage, a selling platform, plus video hosting. 

I appreciate that after this year the price on both Format and Zenfolio will increase, but the basic Format site will still cost me a lot less than Squarespace. Creating a new website every year isn't an ideal solution but it can save money and a freshly designed website might just bring in a few extra clients!

The physical dimensions of the sensor in the Fujifilm GFX 50S II are 43.8x32.9mm – that's 1.7 times the size of a 35mm full-frame sensor. Could this be the last Christmas we see deals on DSLRs? That might sound sensationalist, but the truth that the choices available for traditional interchangeable lens digital reflex cameras are thin on the ground.

The DSLR vs mirrorless debate has raged for a decade now, but we are at a point now where no new DSLRs are being launched – and the number of options available new is declining, and declining fast. If you thought it was too early for the Boxing Day sales, think again! Amazon has slashed the price of the popular Canon EOS R50 mirrorless model, to take it to the lowest price we have ever seen for this well-specified beginner camera. And cheaper than we saw it over Black Friday (yes, really)!

The EOS R50 is one a number of interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras from Canon that seeks to be the new alternative to its highly popular DSLRs, such as the EOS 4000D and EOS 250D. It again uses an APS-C sensor, and gives a resolution of 24 megapixels. 

Launched at the beginning of the year, the R50 is no longer the cheapest model in the EOS R range - that honour now goes to the EOS R100. But one of the key advantages the R50 has is that it has a full-articulated LCD screen - which is great for vlogging or selfies, and for taking images at unusual camera angles. Furthermore the screen is touch-sensitive, unlike on the R100 - so will be more at home to the smartphone generation.

While you might have missed the excitement of Black Friday and Cyber Monday events themselves, it doesn't mean that record deals aren't still to be had on flagship cameras and amazing lenses. Although some prices have shot back up from their sale prices - others deals are still going, and in some cases the prices have even dropped a bit further.

I check camera prices for a living, always making sure that you, the readers get the best deals possible So I have curated a list of what I think are still the 12 best Black Friday and Cyber Monday camera deals still out there - but hurry while this equipment has record deals, it doesn't mean that stock is at an all-time high, in fact, I would reckon that only a certain amount of stock would be left of each at these prices!

It might not be something I mention at lot at Digital Camera World, but I love to play with Lego. I also love to lecture people about the correct plural for multiple Lego pieces (hint: it's not "Legos") – but that's not important right now.

Lego has done a brilliant job of keeping atop the building toys game, even after the patent crucial to the company's original success expired. The key has been partnerships with major brands that appeal to all ages (I'm sure I'm not the only grown man who craves a Lego Millennium Falcon... am I?) 

Anyway this year, Lego has partnered with the top of the Disney brand tree to create a 811-piece set that represents an iconic movie camera from the golden age of cinema (and the birth of Disney). There are several tweaks for those in the know, of course – the film reels form the zeroes of the number '100', while a specially created reel of film depicts Lego versions of classic Disney characters.

Look closely and you'll see scenes from The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, and The Little Mermaid amongst many other animated classics. As if that weren't enough you can play with (or prevent your children from playing with) real Lego minifigures of Bambi, Mickey and Minie Mouse (both in Black & White), Walt Disney himself, and Dumbo. Lego Walt can also sit inside the camera housing with his sketch pad and animate away, revealed when you open a hinged panel on the side of the camera – a nice little secret to show your friends.

Let's be fair, it is a wonderful gift for Disney fans, Lego fans, Camera fans, Cinema lovers, and any combination. So realizing it'd be hard to find nearer Christmas I thought I'd check it out now and I discovered that a certain well-known river-themed retailer had run out (though had a few 'other sellers).

The first shipping date I saw was in 2024. Then I looked again, just now, and things have already got better. Moreover, I also spotted a couple of leftover Black Friday prices...

Best 70-200mm

This could just be the best 70-200mm lens ever?! While telephoto zooms at f/2.8 are notoriusly heavy, this is so light and compact you could spend a whole day shooting without being too uncomfortable. It's an incredibly versatile lens suited to landscapes, wildlife, portrait or even event photography. The one downside to this lens is that it is just so expensive - but with a £700 saving right now, it makes it that little bit more affordable. 

Best for street photography

A fast, 50mm prime lens is an absolute must-have for any street photographer but it also works great as a portrait lens too. For lots of people, a 50mm lens will be the first lens with an f/1.8 aperture they own - or at least it was for me and it absolutely transformed my photography. Finally, I was able to take shots with silky smooth blurred backgrounds, sharp in-focus areas and beautiful round bokeh. 

Most versatile

If you're one of those photographers who like to dabble in lots of different genres of photography, this could be the perfect lens for you. At the wide end, you could just about use it for portraits (although it may look a little odd) but would be great for focussed landscape shots too. At the wide end, it's better suited to bird and wildlife photography or aviation photography (basically anything that's really far away). Not only can you take advantage of Canon's double cashback, you can get an extra £160 off too!

Yes it's big, and yes it's heavy but you cannot beat the image quality of this wide-angle zoom. It's part of Canon's holy trinity of lenses (which also includes the RF 24-70mm and the RF 70-200mm f/2.8) and for good reason - with minimal barrel distortion, image stabilization and low color fringing levels, you won't have to make many edits to your image. 

Best standard zoom

The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L is the true standard mid-range zoom. The Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 variant might appeal to those trying to break away from the mold but this focal range will always be one of my favourites. Even though I shoot with Canon, I've had a go with this lens and it's incredibly fast, delivers stunning images and if I owned it, it'd probably never leave my camera. 

Of all the Cyber Monday camera deals we have seen so far, some of the most impressive have been the ones from Panasonic. 

The Lumix range of mirrorless cameras splits into two different camps. There is the Micro Four Thirds G range, that employs Micro Four Thirds lenses. Buried among the headline Black Friday camera deals are some less bombastic savings on some very, very good photography books. 

I love taking photos but I also love getting inspiration by thumbing through other people's images. So I'm always looking to add to my bookshelf, and I thought I'd share some recommendations as I think these brilliant books deserve a place in everyone's library.

As a commercial photographer, the need for hybrid shooting has increased dramatically – as I often only get considered for jobs if I can also supply video for social media content. As my workflow is often fast-paced, I required a hybrid camera that could do both stills and video if called upon, and thanks to the Black Friday camera deals, I found that one of the best hybrid cameras had a great deal!

The Fujifilm X-T5 is a camera that I have had my eye on for a while, and its video capabilities would certainly allow me to create high-end video content for clients. The capability to capture high-quality 6K/30P, 10-bit 4:2:2 video and record to both Apple ProRes and Blackmagic RAW was a huge selling point, and to get that in the small compact body of the X-T5 was a plus. It would also allow me to continue using the amazing Fujifilm film simulations that I utilize on my Fujifilm GFX 50S II medium format camera to maintain a consistent workflow. 

The deal at Wex saved me £500 and included an exceptional lens, considered one of the best Fujifilm lenses, and is loved by many Fujifilm X shooters - the Fujifilm XF 56mm f1.2 R. Equivalent to full-frame 85mm, it is the perfect focal length for portraiture. The large f/1.2 aperture enables fast and accurate AF and beautiful bokeh fall-off, and it is extremely sharp, capturing great details.

I must confess, as a Brit, Black Friday is still very much a new concept to me, and I have never taken advantage of the sales before, but I couldn't pass up this great deal. It would allow me to level up my practice, by offering higher-quality video, quickly and efficiently. Time is a precious commodity when working commercially with turnarounds often being very tight, the Fujifilm X-T5 would allow me to quickly get the video at the same time as the stills.

This superb deal is still live, but I don't imagine it for much longer - so don't dither!

One of the great things about Black Friday and Cyber Monday is the number of special offers on smart home security cameras, but drill down and there are a couple of concerns about those deals. 

Firstly if you're buying from the world's largest online retailer, Amazon, then there is just a hint of unfair bias since Amazon own two of the biggest brands in the market, Blink and Ring. These companies both produce good quality products with their own distinct slant (though it won't surprise you to learn that both prioritise Alexa compatibility in their feature lists!)

Secondly, like so much else, smart home cameras come with two costs – the cost of acquisition and the running cost; most (but not all) require a subscription service to get the best of the feature set available including, crucially, recording incursions onto your property.

With these two considerations in mind, I found myself thinking, what security cameras would I look to pick up this Black Friday to keep my own home safe and – ideally – to avoid setting myself a long-running financial trap. Personally I'd rather spend a bit more on day one than keep spending a monthly fee.

The pay-once route

Just the other day, a neighbor of mine visited and asked me if he could see a recording from my smart camera because his car, parked a few doors down, had been stolen. I had to apologise and explain that, unless someone came onto my property, the camera didn't actually record the incident.

This is normal with smart home systems, which are activated by nearby motion, record for a few seconds, and then go quiet for a spell to save power (even if something is happening). With a 'proper' system with a base station, like the EufyCam S330 below, you can choose to record as much as you want and the cameras are 4K because it's your own data network – your wi-fi – rather than a paid-for subscription happening on the cheap.

Eufy also offer a number of other elements which can work with this system or alone, like their eufy Security Floodlight Cam with 360-degree pan and tit camera.

The pay-or-not option

As mentioned, the Amazon-owned services come out in force over the Black Friday / Cyber Monday period with bundle deals, and one of the most cost-effective is a Blink Outdoor bundle.

These cameras are designed to work their best with a subscription, which for unlimited cameras is $10 a month, but you can buy an additional device called a Blink Wireless Sync Module which lets you record locally instead. It doesn't have all the smarts, and is seemingly deliberately less elegant (there are no animated icons in the app), but it is interesting to have a buy-out clause from the subscription!

This Black Friday I finally bought a mount adapter for my collection of vintage film lenses, and it has given them a whole new lease on life!

I have been collecting vintage film lenses for my Pentax ME camera for years, but with the price of film and development skyrocketing and my free time recently doing the opposite, I haven't been out shooting much, leaving all my beautiful vintage glass to gather dust on a shelf.

A lens mount adapter is something that has been lingering on my Amazon wishlist for months on end but I never found the drive to actually go ahead and make the purchase. This Black Friday however I saw that it had some money off, which was enough for me to get over my inertia and finally add it to my basket!

The mount adapter I chose is made by Urth, and it is specifically made to connect Pentax K lenses to a Fujifilm X-mount camera (in my case a Fujifilm X-T5). There are plenty of other options available for most SLR, DSLR, and MFT lenses to be mounted to most modern camera bodies including Fujifilm, Sony, Nikon, and Canon.

I really appreciate Urth’s minimal design and environmentally friendly credentials. And when it arrived, I certainly wasn't disappointed as it looks absolutely superb sat between my X-T5 and Pentax-M lenses.

These are manual adapters so the aperture and focus have to be dialed in by hand, no adapter is going to magically give a 40-year-old lens autofocus! But on my Fuji, auto exposure worked flawlessly through the adapter and vintage glass, and the images are still stunning (with a little vintage flair to them).

For around £30-40 (depending on the mount) I have opened my photography up to far more possibilities, and thinking more about manual settings, I'm actually having more fun with photography than I have in a while!

If you have a burgeoning collection of old lenses and you're looking for a cheap thrill this Black Friday, then I can't recommend a mount adapter more.

If you fancy getting into the world of social media influencing, you'll need a bit more than just a camera phone if you want to make really professional-looking content – and with so many Black Friday camera deals to be had, now is a good time to invest!

Whether you want to be an influencer in the world of beauty, cooking, fitness, lifestyle or something entirely different, a decent basic set-up would require a ring light, a mini tripod or selfie stick with tripod feet, a microphone, a smartphone gimbal and if you can stretch to it, a camera for vlogging specifically designed with content creation in mind. 

If you already have one of the latest smartphones such as the iPhone 15 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, you will be able to get away without investing in a camera as they are capable of recording really crisp, high-quality video. The benefits of getting a dedicated vlogging camera are the flip-out screen (so you can see yourself when recording), a dedicated mic-port, even better quality video and a much bigger sensor so it works better in low light. 

Something like the fixed lens Sony ZV-1F would be perfect for someone who doesn't want to spend any extra on lenses but is looking to up their content creation game. It shoots in 4K, has a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch sensor, and can send photos and video straight to your phone thanks to WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. 

1: Camera

Can't quite stretch to a camera yet? Don't worry you can still start your content creation journey even on a budget so long as you can create videos that are well-lit!

Ring lights are perfect for social media influencers - not only are they much cheaper than some other video lights but they also create beautiful circular-shaped catch lights in your eyes which work especially well with beauty influencers. 

2: Lights

With your lightning sorted, it's time to think about a tripod to hold your camera (or smartphone as most come with a phone adapter). A tabletop tripod should be sufficient depending on what type of stuff you want to shoot – but this flexible tripod from Joby will allow you to shoot in loads of different places. Secure it by wrapping the legs around around a bar, or bend the legs to make sure it's really sturdy. 

3: Tripod

The final thing to think about is sound quality - it makes such a big difference to the overall quality of your video, so investing in a decent microphone is very important. There are lots of different types – but to start with, a shotgun mic you can place in front of you or attach to the camera's hotshoe will be perfect. It will help minimize the sound of the wind when you shoot outdoors, and make your voice crisp and clear. 

4: Microphone

With these amazing Black Friday deals, so long as you already have a decent camera or smartphone, you can get started for less than £100 - we think that's something worth shouting about!

Every year Black Friday comes along and sometimes I feel almost guilty for not snapping up a big piece of gear like a discounted drone but, as it happens, I'm happy with the gear I have. What I need to get the best of it are a few peripherals which can make all the difference. So, for this Black Friday, these are the deals I'm snapping up.

For what it's worth, it's also the way I think most of us can do the best out of the day – until last Friday, when the deals really started, prices on things like memory cards and SSD drives haven't been too good. Now there are some bargains out there and they might be gone by the end of the day – almost certainly by the end of 'Cyber Monday.'

So, without further ado, here are my list of four essentials that I plan to own by the end of the day:

1: A fast memory card

Over the years I've learned it's probably best to have a few memory cards ready in my bag. They seem to last forever but they can stop working and it'd be a shame to be grounded for lack of a few dollars. Similarly, the old eggs vs. basket argument suggests it's better to stick to 512GB or 256GB and get a few than splurging on a single massive 1TB card.

2: External SSD

Like many folk, I'd like to edit video on a laptop that doesn't have as generous a storage capacity as perhaps I need (yes, it's a MacBook, so there's no changing it now!). They best solution is definitely an external drive and by my math the most cost-efficient option this Black Friday (on the day itself anyway) is the SanDisk 2TB.

3: Landing mat

Every drone pilot should have a drone landing pad, especially now drones are so short from the ground.

4: Filters

Sadly you don't get ND filters with all the Fly More deals any more, but on the plus side you can track down discounted deals this time of year which effectively offer you two savings against the own-brand alternative.

Of course just because I'm not shopping for a new drone doesn't mean there aren't some good deals on the DJI Avata and others – check our Black Friday Drone Deals page as well as our best camera drones page.

Christmas is coming, and if you're looking for a drone on Black Friday the chances are you're looking for a good present. If you're looking for a genuinely good drone, with a capable camera, the drone I would usually point to would be the DJI Mini 2 SE, which produces some of the best video possible from a drone in the price bracket thanks to the stabilized camera. It uses a 3-axis gimbal which is smart enough to keep the camera steady as the drone wobbles, unlike most of the cheaper competition. It also comes from the reliable market leader. No competition, right?

This year, there are two alternative choices from a company which used to concentrate slightly more on toy drones: Potensic. They have produced a folding drone called the Potensic Atom – which also boasts a 3-axis gimbal and a 4K camera – and a cheaper Atom SE, which relies on electronics to stabilize the image. The later compromises image stability, but also offers a lower price of entry, something DJI doesn't do. Given that – with Black Friday discounts – we're looking at a the Atom SE starting at under $200 it feels like plenty would benefit if DJI would be a little more competitive, especially as – when I tested in, admittedly, low wind, the video wasn't too bad.

At the same time, the better DJI deals aren't as great as you'd hope. Probably because the margins on the Mini 2 SE are pretty tight, and because it's still a great drone that sells itself, but the discount is only $40 – admittedly an OK 12% if you buy the drone only, but that is only 8% if you're buying the bundle.

The Mini 2 SE is a great drone, but you only get 2.7K video, not 4K. Also if you start to add up the goodies – extra batteries, bag, charger – the Potensic Atom (not so much the Atome SE) offers a good bit more for not a lot more spend, at least during Potensic's more impressive Black Friday deals.

There is one other thing to think about though – DJI have their own offer on the Mini 3, which is better than both drones in terms of camera, and offers a choice of controllers and bundles. The Mini 3 even has a camera you can rotate to portrate mode for social media fanatics!

There are so many exciting products and incredible discounts in the Black Friday camera deals. But here's my number one tip: don't get distracted by bargain bodies and exotic lenses – buy some spare camera batteries!!!

You probably don't need a new lens. You probably need a new camera even less. But I'm pretty sure that what you do need is a spare battery or two – and you may as well get them while they're cheap! 

It's not sexy, but it's smart – and future you will thank you for it.

What is Black Friday?

The modern meaning of Black Friday began in the US during the 1970s, denoting the Friday after Thanksgiving, which marks the beginning of the busy Christmas shopping season. More retailers started to use Black Friday to launch sales, with some dramatic discounts available to savvy shoppers. In the last 10 years or so, Black Friday has spread beyond the US to become a near-global phenomenon.

Even with other promotions and sales during the year, such as Amazon Prime Day, the weeks leading into Black Friday are always a great time to find the best bargains.

When is Black Friday 2024?

This year, the official Black Friday weekend takes place from Friday 29 November through to Monday 2 December 2024 (Cyber Monday), and that's when we expect to see the bulk of the best camera deals. However, there will be some great offers available before and after this weekend – which we will be monitoring from now through to the New Year.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is a later invention that brings attention to exclusively online deals.

When do the best Black Friday deals begin?

Binocular FAQs

What do the numbers, such as 8x42 and 12x50, mean on binoculars?

Binoculars have lots of different specs, but two key ones are best to focus on if you want to keep things simple. These are magnification and lens size.

Most binoculars will list both in their name. When you're browsing for binoculars, you'll quickly notice that their names tend to include something like "10x20" or "6x30". These two numbers refer respectively to the magnification factor and the size of the lenses. So in this example, we've got binoculars with 10x magnification and 6x magnification. You might think it'd be a matter of picking the binoculars with the largest magnification, but in practicality, it limits your field of view, which can make things harder to spot or follow. With higher magnifications, you are more likely to need a tripod or built-in image stabilization.

The second number refers to the objective lens size. A larger lens will make the image brighter and clearer, especially in low light, but will also make the binoculars bigger and heavier (and probably more expensive). This means that for your hobby or subject, it's worth thinking about what the best combination of magnification of objective lens size will work for you.

To work out how bright a pair of binoculars is - and its suitability for use in lowlight – you need to divide the second number by the first - this gives you what is the "exit pupil size". For a pair of 10x20 binoculars, the exit pupil is 2 – and for a pair of 6x30 binos it is 5. Look for an exit pupil of five or greater if you want to use them on dull days, or at dusk.
