7x5 print cost: £0.34
Ships to: UK & Europe
Shipping: £3.99

Reasons to buy

+
Plenty of aspect ratio options
+

+
Great print quality

Reasons to avoid

-
Colour/contrast could be better

Bonusprint is really easy to use and should you upload images that are too low res or need to b cropped, it'll pop up with a warning sign telling you. It automatically works out what ratio it needs to be printed on and there are several options including 6x4, 7x5, 7.5x5 and 6.5x5. Prints start at 15p but the more you order, the better deal you can get so it's worth bulk ordering lots of prints in one go so you can save yourself money in the long run.

Of course, quality is super important when you're printing out your most treasured memories. Bonusprints offers accurate colors, correct exposure and lots of the finer details remain. Those comprehensive aspect ratio options also ensure no nasty cropping surprises.

Once you order, Bonusprint aims to deliver photos within 4-6 working days, although often it's sooner. Shipping isn't free, but it is capped at £3.99 in the UK, so you'll never pay more than that, regardless of how many prints you order.

2. Cewe

Decent prints for a decent price but they don't have a wow factor

Specifications

6x4 print cost: £1.89 for 10, then 12p each
Ships to: UK
Shipping cost: £2.49

Reasons to buy

+
Good print quality
+
Fast, reasonably priced delivery
+
Cost-effective for bulk orders

Reasons to avoid

-
Few aspect ratio options

Cewe offers comprehensive downloadable print preparation software, but the online previewer is short on functionality. Only the software allows full control over how images are cropped to fit the ten available print sizes. However, there is a variable width option that allows you to print out non-standard aspect ratios

While Cewe advertises that prints start at 9p you can only get them cheap when you order 100 or more. The minimum order is 10 prints which will cost you £1.89. Postage is pretty cheap at just £2.49 or free if you place an order over £30 and prints will be delivered in 3-6 working days.

We used Cewe's Photo Optimisation feature which claims to tweak image sharpness, color and contrast for better prints. Unfortunately, we didn't really notice much difference and it didn't give our samples the winning edge. That being said, we also didn't spot any major issues. Some of the shadow areas looked lighter which meant the overall contrast was a bit flat and the black and white shots exhibited a hint of a magenta color cast.

3. Photobox

Not the cheapest, but the app offers free print

Specifications

6x4 print cost: £0.15
Ships to: UK, Ireland, Australia, and some mainland European countries
Delivery cost: From £3.39
Delivery time: Five working days (economy service), two days (express service)

Reasons to buy

+
Fast delivery
+
7.5x5 and 5x5 ratio options
+
Acceptable print quality

Reasons to avoid

-
Relatively expensive

If exceptional quality was reflected in the price then we could understand why Photobox charges so much per print but we were pretty disappointed to find the quality was average at best. Prints start at 15p for a 6x4-inch print or 31p for a 7x5-inch print which is pretty steep compared to other companies. When we inspected our sample prints closely we noticed small amounts of pixelation and fine details looked a little blurred.

There was some minor banding in areas of subtle graduations and a flat contrast made some images look uninspiring and washed out, especially with monochrome prints. All in all, it wasn't exactly what we had hoped for.

The one redeeming factor is they do offer a variety of print ratios including 7.5x5 which means images captured on a full-frame or APS-C sensor won't be cropped on either side. You can also get 50 free prints a month if you download the app to your Android or Apple phone - all you need to do is pay for delivery. If that doesn't sway you we don't know what will since everyone loves a freebie and this way you can test the quality for yourself.

Delivery starts at £3.39 and economy post is likely to take five working days to arrive. However, if you do need faster service you can choose a more expensive delivery option.

+

Reasons to avoid

-
Instant print is more expensive
-
Slow delivery

One of the benefits of getting your photos printed by Boots is they outsource the work to Cewe who appear number two on our list. This means you can expect the same quality prints regardless of whether you order from Boots in-store, online or from Cewe directly.

It costs exactly the same per print as it would at Cewe only there is an option to collect your images in-store for just £1.50 rather than having them delivered. If you're strapped for time and need a photo printed instantly, you can also do this at Boots though it's worth noting that prints are considerably more expensive starting at 49p each but if you just have one or two to print, it's an expense you can stretch to.

Boots also offer other printing services such as canvas prints, mugs, calendars and phone cases. If you have a Boots Advantage card, it's a good way of earning extra points that you wouldn't get if you ordered from Cewe.

It automatically selects them to be printed as 6x4-inch images but if your images would suit a different size better, it'll pop up with a message saying so.

Print quality is pretty good and images have accurate colors, contrast and details. The one issue we noticed is that there's a slight magenta color cast in black and white prints and neutral-colored areas. However, with prints starting at just 10p for a 6x4 print or 21p for a 7x5 print so if you're after standard-sized photos it's one of the best value services.

5 tips for choosing online photo printing services

Choose the right size: Make sure you choose the right print size. This will depend on the aspect ratio your photo has been cropped to. If your photo is in a 3:2 or 4:3 ratio, a 7x5-inch print will ensure minimal cropping.

Discover extra ratios: Some printing services might offer less common photo printing sizes such as 7.5x5, 6.5x5 and 5x5. This is perfect for tailoring your prints to perfectly match the aspect ratio you shot in.

Select your finish: Usually, your only two finish options are gloss or matte. However, if you've paid for a premium service you could have your images printed onto a luxury, heavyweight paper.

Get them delivered: As you'd expect, most online printing services will ship your images directly to you, usually for a small fee. Turn around is normally no more than 2-5 business days but this could be a bit longer during busy times.

Upload your shots: The best online photo printing services will have simple-to-use print preview software that will enable you to accurately make any necessary adjustments. Be wary of print previews where you can't quite tell how your final image will be cropped.
